I've read the upstream thread, as I can understand, it's related to the kernel, isn't it? Why not forwarding the issue on the Kernel? I've migrated from Jessie to Stretch yesterday and I found this issue really annoying, IMO the severity of this bug should be raised. We have to backport the fix on the stable branch. I cannot use a computer that has visual flashes regularly. I've spent one hour to figure out the issue and to find this bug. I've apply the work around to save my life but a regular user couldn't do that. Best regards, Alex.
Bug#837451: xserver-xorg-core: visual flashes followed by hard crash upon keyboard interaction with thinkpad x201
Hi, I also had that bug. I installed Stretch from scratch yesterday and noticed screen flashes (or screen refreshs, I can't really say) sometimes when I was typing on the keyboard. Once, I got a black screen quickly followed by a system shutdown, I couldn't find much in the logs (with my knowledge). Someone pointed me to this bug, I did the workaround (cp xserver-xorg-video-intel's xorg.conf into /etx/X11), and the bug disappeared. No more flashes. I hope the shutdown thing won't happen :) Thanks, gagz

Hi all, intrigeri: > Gabriel Filion: >> but yeah I could disable the force (, luke) and see if I can reproduce >> the bug again with the newer package versions. > >> I'll see if I can do that on sunday > > Ping? sorry it took me so much time. I upgraded xserver-xorg-core to 2:1.19.3-1 (in sid) and removed the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file that was forcing xorg to load the intel driver. I then restarted the X display and was able to reproduce the visual flashes (or rather visible screen refresh) and hard crash followed by an automatic shutdown about 10s later. signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

Hi, Uwe reported that with a newest release of xserver-xorg-core, the bug disappeared. [1] There has been new uploads recently in Stretch and Sid, which now have 2:1.19.2-1 and 2:1.19.3-1 respectively. Is one of this versions the one supposed to have "fixed" the bug? Could be helpfull if someone (lelutin?) gives a try back with the newest modsetting driver so that we know if it eventually works. bert. [1] https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=98742#c14

It also happens with a keyboard plugged in to USB port. Just a small note to let you know I have the same problem on my X201 with the exact same symptoms. Since switching to the intel driver my system is stable again. I already reported the issue to the upstream bug tracker and mark the bug as forwarded accordingly. I'm sorry for this big delay, but I've finally taken the time to test this out. I can confirm that the visual glitches and crashes are still present in the latest version of the package, 2:1.19.0-2. Also, when using the above-mentioned technique for forcing the driver to "intel" (I've confirmed that it loaded by looking at ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.log.0), I don't see visual flashes anymore. signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

Bug#837451: xserver-xorg-core: visual flashes followed by hard crash upon keyboard interaction with thinkpad x201
Package: xserver-xorg-core Version: 2:1.18.4-2 Severity: important Hi there, I've been having weird crashes that happen only when I interact with my keyboard. It also happens with a keyboard plugged in to USB port. I didn't know where exactly to look, so I "bisected" packages with the help of snapshot.debian.org and found out that xserver-xorg-core version 1.18.3-2 was introducing this issue. Downgrading to 1.18.3-1 makes the visual flashes and hard crashes go away. I'm still seeing those crashes in 1.18.4-2 What happens is when I type on the keyboard, at some random point X crashes (happens always exactly when I type a letter on the keyboard - if I let the computer open without touching it, it doesn't crash). Crash in this case means the screen goes black, sometimes there's a 1 pixel-wide vertical line on the left where color zizags randomly. The black screen and left vertical column stay there for about 10 seconds before the computer shuts down by itself. I have seen because of ssh connections that the last letter I typed which caused the crash usually makes it through to the ssh connection, but nothing after that goes through. Also, before the crash happens, I saw that with gnome-terminal, if I switch window or tab and start typing in the new window, I'll see a visual flash like a quick blackout. If I repeat those flashes a number of time I end up reproducing the crash. Unfortunately, nothing in syslog or X.log ever shows up after a crash. -- Package-specific info: X server symlink status: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Jul 28 2013 /etc/X11/X -> /usr/bin/Xorg -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 274 Sep 6 09:09 /usr/bin/Xorg VGA-compatible devices on PCI bus: -- 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0046] (rev 02) /etc/X11/xorg.conf does not exist. /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d does not exist.
