My apologies, these problems have now been fixed. I must admit that I was
unaware of the debian/clean file, and I had thought that any manpages were
automatically picked up

You ship debian/wordplay.1 but you don't install it.
You remove a file in override_dh_clean, you can use debian/clean instead.
