Bug#854980: kwin-x11: In multisession (all graphical) w/ desktop effects, kwin tends to crash sessions randomly on nvidia hardware

2018-03-05 Thread Nuno Oliveira

* Nuno Oliveira  [2018-03-05 21:54]:

Hi,

I also get random crashes of kwin-x11 with the nvidia binary driver.
They appear easily (but not always) when using qupzilla for web
browsing, mostly when new pages are opened in new windows.

Installed versions are:

I believe this behaviour also occurred with the previous kwin-x11
package version. On machines with the intel video driver, I have not
observed any crashes.

Nuno.

Bug#854980: kwin-x11: In multisession (all graphical) w/ desktop effects, kwin tends to crash sessions randomly on nvidia hardware

2017-02-12 Thread Julien Aubin
Package: kwin-x11
Version: 4:5.8.2-1+b1
Severity: normal

Hi,

Thie ticket might be related to #854372. I have a NVidia GPU, GTX 1070, and
have tweaked KWin settings to force keeping window thumbnails in memory and
disabled the allow apps to block compositing feature.

Now here's the issue, which does not always happen :
DO : open a first KDE session w/ desktop effects enabled (SDDM is the login
manager used).
DO : using the KDE switch user feature, open another KDE session for another
user, w/ desktop effects enabled as well and the kwin settings set as above.
DO : do some stuff on the second session like opening a browser, working
normally and so on, and then log out of this session.
EXPECT : the system should switch back to the first session, and when the
user
enters her password again the first session appears again.
ACTUAL : unable to log in back again, the screen is frozen, only mouse
moves.
You have to switch to VT, run to kill -9 -1 as your user and restart sddm.

Note : under KDE 4 w/ Jessie and many backports including the kernel and
NVidia
driver which were at the same version as w/ Stretch the issue did not
occur. So
it may be either X related, or Kwin related (or maybe a GPU driver bug).
Also
note as I've stated in #854372 that kwin is extremely unstable w/ default
settings on such hardware (while not at all on other configurations I could
test).

Hardware :
Intel Core i7 4770
32 GB RAM
NVidia GeForce 1070 w/ GPU 375.26 binary driver
Debian Stretch 9
