Getting 10.2.12 into unstable/testing would be my first step. ;)

I think that negotiating with -backports maintainers should be the first step. 
Bumping the MariaDB server version in stretch-backports might be not allowed. 
So before spending any effort, it should be pre-negotiated with them.
