Bug#886743: virtualbox-dkms now requires package libelf-dev to work

2018-01-12 Thread Awtul
Package: linux-headers-4.14.0-3-amd64
Version: 4.14.12-2
Followup-For: Bug #886743

Dear Maintainer(s),

I just wanted to confirm this bug and say that when I execute
"VBoxManage clonehd --format RAW Debian-Sid-amd64-2.vdi Debian-Sid-amd64-2.raw"
I get the following:
"WARNING: The character device /dev/vboxdrv does not exist.
Please install the virtualbox-dkms package and the appropriate
 headers, most likely linux-headers-amd64.

You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed.
VBoxManage: error: Could not find file for the medium
'/home/my-user/Debian-Sid-amd64-2.vdi' (VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND)

enmDevType, enmAccessMode, fForceNewUuidOnOpen, pMedium.asOutParam())"
at line 179 of file VBoxManageDisk.cpp".

"apt-get install --reinstall virtualbox virtualbox-dkms virtualbox-qt" fails
and in /var/lib/dkms/virtualbox/5.2.4/build/make.log I see
"DKMS make.log for virtualbox-5.2.4 for kernel 4.14.0-3-amd64 (x86_64)

this seems something that should be in the kernel-header runtime module?

virtualbox don't need libelf directly, and that Makefile is not part of vbox
code.

(somebody might object that the runtime dependency needs to be added to dkms
maybe,
I don't honestly know which place is best, probably kernel?)

Bug#886743: virtualbox-dkms now requires package libelf-dev to work

2018-01-09 Thread Christian Pietsch
Package: virtualbox-dkms
Version: 5.2.4-dfsg-2
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I noticed that virtualbox can no longer launch any VM because
/dev/vboxdrv does not exist. Trying to reinstall virtualbox-dkms
aborted. The logfile gave me the helpful advice to install libelf-dev.

Installing libelf-dev helped: Reinstalling virtualbox-dkms built a
fresh module, and after `modprobe vboxdrv`, my VMs can be started
again.

I suggest that libelf-dev be added as a dependeny of this package.
