Hi Adrian, as far as I can see, you objected to the removal of gconf2
and dependant packages and blocked this for buster.

What are your plans for bullseye (and beyond)?

Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for the report.

Ok that fits with an old TODO entry left by the previous maintainer of
debhelper:

"""
* deprecate dh_gconf for dh_installgsettings (stuff should be migrating
  away from gconf, and then I can just remove it -- have not added
  warning or depreaction docs yet)

"""

I will add a deprecation warning in the next upload.

A quick look at codesearch suggests the only users of dh_gconf are:

 * mail-notification (not in testing)
 * revelation (not in testing)
 * revolt (Uses it after the .debs are built AFAICT)
 * gwaei
 * comix (not in testing)
 * ooo-thumbnailer (not in testing)
 * debian-edu-config

Please file bugs for these uses and ask them to migrate to
dh_installgsettings (or just remove the call, if it is no longer
necessary). Once those are fixed, I can simply remove dh_gconf from
debhelper in bullseye and we are done.
  Using a compat bump here will not make a lot of sense if we expect
dh_gconf to disappear in bullseye (as I would have to keep the tool
around for 8-10 years after it was last useful despite no one using it).

Thanks,
~Niels

My understanding is that we will try to remove gconf from Debian
during the Bullseye cycle. Generally, things that used gconf should
switch to gsettings

I noticed that dh_gconf was mentioned in the most recent debhelper
changelog entry and wondered if it would make sense to formally
deprecate dh_gconf.

I'm not sure what your release schedule is, but maybe dh_gconf should
be removed in compat level 13?
