We'll of course need to know that before we can decide whether or not it seems like a problem. Otherwise I'll try to look in to it later -- and yes, I think it'd probably be useful to have a separate bug if we don't think the change is related directly or indirectly to the mailutils dependency. Bug#916986: Downgrade hard-dependency on mailutils to recommends
Dear Rob, To add to this bug report: firstly, a big thanks for releasing Emacs 26 as a Debian package--I've been looking forward to this for quite a while. Secondly, if the dependencies could be changed, that would be appreciated: apart from "normal" systems, I run Emacs (emacs-nox) in a chroot build environment without any MTA, and the new dependencies add 62MB... not counting the bother of having exim4-daemon-light and cron installed in a chroot. By the way, I don't know if I need to create a new bug report, but emacs-nox 1:26.1+1-2 is 24.4MB larger than the previous version, 1:25.2+1-11. Is there that much difference between the two versions, or has something been included in the package by accident? Dear Rob Browning, first, I'd like to thank you for your work on emacs. As I use emacs intensivly in my daily work but very seldom its e-mail capabilities, I also would appreciate if the dependency on mailutils could be relaxed somehow. Regards, Jörg.

Package: emacs Version: 1:26.1+1-2 It's nice that Emacs now uses secure tools for downloading e-mail, but the dependency on mailutils boils down to ~22 MiB of extra packages (that was in my case, considering I already had a MTA installed; mailutils depends on mail-transport-agent!) It would be nice being able to skip installing mailutils if downloading e-mail with Emacs is not needed. Many thanks for considering, -d
