Bug#919417: orca: Orca reads character by character when holding navigation keys pressed

Hello,

After disabling Wayland, this one is resolved as well! Although I can't
tell why.

Best regards
Robert

Hello,

Just want to add that it behaves as intended in Firefox 64.0.2, but not
in gnome-terminal or gedit.

Best regards

Yes, exactly.

It's Gnome 3 and gnome-terminal, all from Buster. Orca is frmo
experimental (3.31.4-1). Just tried with gedit, which is affected as
well. To reproduce:

1. Open gedit with a file that has some lines, maybe 10+.
2. Move the cursor to the beginning of the document.
3. Keep Arrow Down pressed for 3 seconds.
4. Orca will read line by line, although the cursor reached the last
   line long ago.

Best regards
Robert

Do you mean: on your system the synthesis keeps saying the whole
character, and all characters, while you would rather that the synthesis
stops as soon as moving to another character, to the point that
characters are never spoken entirely, but just a glimpse?

If so, it happens that on my system I am getting that latter behavior,
with speech dispatcher 0.8, espeak-ng, and orca 3.31.4, so it seems
something is different with your system...

Which desktop are you using? Which application are you trying with?

Bug#919417: orca: Orca reads character by character when holding navigation keys pressed

2019-01-15 Thread Robert Schindler
Package: orca
Version: 3.31.4-1

Dear Maintainer,

When walking through a line of text quickly, e.g. by holding the right
arrow pressed, Orca reads character by character instead of staying in
sync with the cursor position, what makes releasing the key in the right
moment impossible. The same can be observed when navigating with holding
arrow up/down pressed, which then lets Orca read full lines one by one.

As soon as another key (such as Ctrl) is pressed, it stops reading,
thus I think the speech backend isn't stuck.

I'm using speech dispatcher with espeak-ng, in case that matters, and
could verify this with Orca 3.30 and 3.31 and speech-dispatcher 0.8
and 0.9 (from experimental).

Best regards
Robert
