Unfortunately, no. It doesn't do the trick. Virtual packages aren't
installable.

# apt install lua

Package lua is a virtual package provided by:
  lua50 5.0.3-8.1
  lua5.4 5.4.3-1
  lua5.3 5.3.3-1.1+b1
  lua5.2 5.2.4-1.1+b3
  lua5.1 5.1.5-8.1+b3
You should explicitly select one to install.

E: Package 'lua' has no installation candidate

See packages like python3 or gcc for examples of what I mean.
They have dependencies to (for instance) python3.9 and gcc-10.

Bug#922876: lua5.3: Please provide a 'lua' metapackage package that depends on the latest version

2019-02-21 Thread Celelibi
Package: lua5.3
Version: 5.3.3-1.1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Having a "lua" metapackage that installs the latest version of lua would
allow to have the latest interpreter automatically updated. This seems
to be a pretty common thing to do in Debian with interpreters and
compilers.

Best regards,
Celelibi
