I was recently in contact with one of the upstream developers, and he
suggested uploading the release candidates to Debian. Perhaps worth a
try, to get a fix for the CVEs into the package archive?

Please go ahead and adopt it. I do not really have capacity for more
packages. :)

For somewhat nostalgic reasons on my part, I'm looking at this package
and thinking about adopting it. It looks like the package has not been
touched in some time, but upstream still seems to be active (commits
within the last day, for example).

Petter, if you'd rather adopt it, let me know. Otherwise, assuming
it is in reasonably decent shape to start with, which it seems to
be, I'll adopt it.

Hi. I really enjoyed finding GNU Cobol in Debian, and hope it will stay
here for a long time. Unfortunately I do not have the capacity to
maintain it myself in Debian.

Can you tell something about the problems with maintaining this package,
or what a future maintainer should keep in mind?

I visited what I believe is the official IRC channel for the project,
irc://irc.oftc.net/#gnucobol, and there were no-one there, which I found
worrying.

Bug#945816: O: gnucobol -- COBOL compiler

2019-11-29 Thread Ludwin Janvier
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Hello,
I intend to orphan the gnucobol package.

Thanks.

Ludwin Janvier

The package description is:
GnuCOBOL (formerly OpenCOBOL) is a free, modern COBOL compiler. GnuCOBOL
implements a substantial part of the COBOL 85, COBOL 2002 and COBOL 2014
standards and X/Open COBOL, as well as many extensions included in other COBOL
compilers (IBM COBOL, MicroFocus COBOL, ACUCOBOL-GT and others).
 .
GnuCOBOL translates COBOL into C and compiles the translated code using a
 native C compiler.
 .
Build COBOL programs on various platforms, including GNU/Linux, Unix, Mac OS X,
and Microsoft Windows. GnuCOBOL has also been built on HP/UX, z/OS, SPARC,
RS6000, AS/400, along with other combinations of machines and operating
 systems.
 .
While being held to a high level of quality and robustness, GnuCOBOL does not
claim to be a “Standard Conforming” implementation of COBOL.
 .
GnuCOBOL passes over 9600 of the NIST COBOL 85 test suite tests and over 750
 internal checks during build.
