I can confirm that the "-soundhw hda" option is still broken in
3.1+dfsg-8+deb10u8. When playing a movie or a song with VLC Media Player
inside a guest (running Debian 10) one can hear very short bits of audio
from time to time as Teran McKinney describes.
Also, when I open Pulse Audio Volume Control in my host Debian 10
system, I can see in the "Playback" tab that the stream for QEMU very
frequently appears and disappears - as if it was activated and
immediately deactivated in some kind of broken loop. This is why one can
probably hear those short bits of audio from the guest (= when the
stream is active it all works). The GUI monitoring for PulseAudio used
in my test is provided by "pavucontrol" package in Debian.
