it works just fine for me on a stable box (I tried with 'mousepad' in the
custom command field for a text file, for example).

What happens in your case, exactly?

Dear Maintainer,

In thunar (debian stable), right clicking a file and entering something in "use 
a custom command" does not open the file. I was trying to open image files with 
feh -B black but I suspect this is true of any file. XFCE's "mime type editor" 
in the applications menu does work to set all future associations, but anyway, 
this does not
