You are probably using a serial port to monitor progress?

If so, you need the following appended on the kernel line to redirect to 
the serial console:


kernel debian-installer/amd64/linux TERM=linux ..  yadda yadda ... 
console=ttyS0,115200n -- console=ttyS0,115200n8
