Bug#285818: External CRT clone with i810 driver

2005-11-10 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Hi all,

This is an answer for a fairly old conversation, but I could not have
left it unanswered.

On 9/1/05, Zsolt Rizsanyi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 What worked for me is to add this to my xorg.conf:
 Section Device
 Identifier  Generic Video Card
 Driver  i810
 Option  MonitorLayout CRT,LFP
 Option  Clone true
 EndSection

Works perfectly. Thanks a lot for the directions.

 This works giving me cloned output on the laptop and CRT. Overlay only
 works outputs to the laptop, but it can be changed using xv_attr utility
 (so you can watch films from a projector ;)

Works perfectly. Wrote a little script to swap overlay pipes (sorry
for the poor scripting, but it works...) : attached.

  Is i855crt deprecated since the inclusion of X.org in Debian?
 I am not sure since switching with Fn+F5 does not work it would be nice to
 make i855crt work with it.

With the new driver, it appears there is no need for i855crt.

  Should bug #285818 be closed?

 It definitely needs some updating :)

Bug CC'd

Cheers,

Bug#396938: aptitude: symbol lookup error: undefined symbol: _ZN9pkgPolicyD2Ev

2006-11-03 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.4.4-1
Severity: minor

Hi,

Because of #388708, I pinned apt.

Since aptitude 0.4.3-1 - 0.4.4-1 I think, aptitude works well but outputs the
following message :

# LANG=C aptitude upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading extended state information
Initializing package states... Done
Building tag database... Done
No packages will be installed, upgraded, or removed.
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B of archives. After unpacking 0B will be used.
aptitude: symbol lookup error: aptitude: undefined symbol: _ZN9pkgPolicyD2Ev

(I used LANG=C to make messages displayed in English, but the problem is also
present with my default locale)

I think it has to do with an ABI change in apt without a soname change (that's
what I understood from similar bug reports). Anyway, aptitude 0.4.4 shouldn't
depend on apt = 0.6.46 ?

Feel free to ask for more information.

Hi,

The machine freezes sometimes, repeatedly and it seems this happens under
some network load in a VE.

vcfgvalidate is all ok. The fail counts of user beancounters are all 0.

Here is the stacktrace. Feel free to ask for more info.

Bug#483564: [Pkg-xfce-devel] Bug#483564: Bug#483564: reassign?

2008-09-30 Thread Alexandre Rossi
 Then feel free to reassign :)

For CONFIG_PREEMPT related things, the advice[1] seems to be : deal
with upstream directly. Upstream knows[2] about this, so I won't
bother the Kernel team with this unless they use CONFIG_PREEMPT=y ,
which won't be in the near future.

 Subject: Bug#500472: linux-image-2.6.26-1-openvz-amd64: NULL pointer

 Thanks! It is a mainstream bug. Fixed patch was sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The patch is there : http://www.spinics.net/lists/netdev/msg76471.html

But it does not apply to 2.6.26 so I tried to backport it. Here is
what I could come up with (clearly not understanding what I was doing,
and taking into account the fact that a follow-up says ipv6 codepath
is similar) :

Bug#493541: lazygal: resizing parameters not flexible enough

2008-08-03 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Hi,

 lazygal allows one to set the final size with --image-size, but what if some
 of my pictures are landscape and others portrait? Visiting the example
 gallery
 on the upstream website answers this question: lazygal can't handle that :-(
 For example, let's say that most of my images are landscape, 800x600. If I
 pass
 --image-size medium=800x600 then the few portrait images (which are naturally
 600x800) will be sized down to 480x600.

From where I stand, this is actually an expected behaviour : this way,
portrait images do not need more scrolling on the webpage than
landscape ones, which is nice for browsing : if size are aranged in a
way that no scrolling is needed for landscape images, then no
scrolling is required for portrait ones either.

Anyway, I've got an override for this behaviour ready but I'm not
really sure it is usefull. What am I missing here?

 Actually, what I would _really_ like is an option for lazygal to simply not
 resize
 existing images at all, is that asking too much?

There is the -O, --original option that copies the original pictures
in the destination directory. However, the next version of lazygal
will understand 0x0 dimensions in the -s option as an instruction not
to resize pictures for this size. Patch available[1].

Cheers,

Alex

Bug#495503: lazygal: order of pictures in a folder?

2008-08-18 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Hi,

 It is totally unclear to me how lazygal chooses the order in which pictures
 are
 listed on the index page and linked together. There is nothing about it in
 the
 manpage, and the behaviour I see in practice doesn't fit any simple formula.

Okay, next version will have a better manpage.

 Here's and example. One subdirectory of images (no EXIF date), listed in
 mtime
 order:
 [snip]

You picture seam to have very close mtimes, and lazygal uses this to
sort the pictures. Therefore, close mtimes are considered equal.

Anyway I think that sorting according to filesystem mtime is not good,
so I'll be changing this to revert to comparing filenames to fit your
use case.

What do you think?

The patch against the development version would be the one attached.

Cheers,

Alex

 One piddling complaint: it would be better if subdirectory links went
 explicitly to index.html in the subdirectory, because that makes it
 browsable locally (when everything is a file:/// URL).

This should be all good now in the development version.

Bug#483564: reassign?

2008-09-25 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Hi,

This has been bugging me for months. Thanks for the clues about the
roots of the problem. Could you please point me to a specific patch?
Is this fixed in 2.6.26.5?

As a side note, shouldn't this be reassigned to the linux-source-*
(source packages as linux-image-* do not seem to be built with
CONFIG_PREEMPT enabled)?

Thanks,

Alex

 Well, as CONFIG_PREMPT is not used, I don't think kernel team will do
 anything about this. But you can try. I think you'd better report the
 bug upstream, if it's not already done.

If it is fixed in 2.6.27rc1, as said above, I do not need to.

And I guess that the kernel team has more important things to do than
fixing stuff that does not trigger in linux-image-* ...

But I'm still very interested in the fix for this ;)

For the record, the maybe fix[1] on top of 2.6.26.5 does not work for
me. I think there is more stuff involved.

Both reverting to 2.6.25 or upgrading to 2.6.27rc1 improve things a
lot though, as I can only trigger the bug with bash reverse search, a
long line, and over SSH if that matters. No more problems with less
and co.

Bug#495503: lazygal: order of pictures in a folder?

2008-09-04 Thread Alexandre Rossi
(sorry for the late answer but I have been offline for two weeks)

 Ian There should be an option (command line or config file) to select
 Ian sorting by name, filesystem time or exif time. Name should
 Ian probably be the default.

 Here's a patch that dose this, plus another nagging issue: passing
 optimize and progressive flags to the JPEG encoder. Note that
 the patch is cumulative vs. 0.4; i.e. it includes your 0x0 patch.

Ok thanks, I have incorporated all this in the development version
with a few modifications :
- I prefer an intelligent 'exif' default for the sort_by option rather
than 'filename'.
- I renamed 'name' to 'filename' to be more explicit.
- I dropped the 'generate-metadata' default as this is a global switch
that prevents any web gallery generation from happening.
- I added an error message for an unknown sorting criterion.

Please test if you have time to do so. Any comments welcome too.

 Now, to make it _really_ stand out of the crowd, parallelize.
 Number of threads should probably be another option, like make's -jn.

I definitely need to work on this (no threads though because of the
Python Global Interpreter Lock, so os.fork() it will be, which
complicates things).

  Description : A media player daemon

Deejayd is a multi purpose media player that can be completely controlled
through the network using XML messages.
It suppports playlists, searching, many media tags. It can playback many
music and video formats using either its xine (recommended) or its gstreamer
backend.

Preliminary packaging may be browsed in the upstream VCS viewer[0]. Built
packages work well, are lintian and linda clean, and build in a clean pbuilder
chroot.

I plan to search for a sponsor once we sort some internal bug and some
packaging issues (remove debian/* from upstream tarball[1] as DDs mostly seem
to prefer that).

Reporting any issue (on the packaging or on the sofware) is very welcome,
especially because this is my first debian package.

Bug#463973: ITP: deejayd -- A media player daemon

2008-02-04 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Hi,

Description : A media player daemon

 Nitpick: just media player daemon is fine; the preference these days
 seems to be not using the indefinite article. Or possibly network media
 player daemon would be better.

Noted. Thanks.

  Deejayd is a multi purpose media player that can be completely controlled
  through the network using XML messages.
  It suppports playlists, searching, many media tags. It can playback many
  music and video formats using either its xine (recommended) or its gstreamer
  backend.

 Does it support queuing? What I mean by that (and queuing may not be
 the correct term), is that I want to select some songs from the library
 and add them to the playlist and as they are played, they are removed
 from the playlist.

Definitely, I use it all the time. It is implemented as a special playlist.

 Does it support random play? Not shuffling the playlist, but if the
 playlist is empty, just select a random song from the library. If I
 select some songs from the library, it should play those, and then, when
 the playlist is again empty, go back to random selections.

It does both random through the playlist and shuffling a playlist, but
does not (and I would say 'yet' because I need this) does random on
the library.
As a workaround, I find myself adding nearly all my songs to a playlist.

 If not, do you have any idea if upstream would be amenable to
 such features? Obviously, they'd have final say over a particular
 implementation.

They certainly would as I'm involved quite a bit in upstream work.

Cheers,

Alex

Bug#463973: ITP: deejayd -- A media player daemon

2008-02-04 Thread Alexandre Rossi
  Yes. Apparently what's special about this is that it can be
  controlled over the network. Probably not the only one but
  noticeable enough to be mentioned in a short description.

 mpd also supports that (tcp/6600).

Yep this project is very similar to mpd. As far as I know, it improves
over mpd with the following features :
- play queue
- video support (this is also an advantage over XMMS2 but I do not
know this project well enough to do a full comparison)
- xine or gstreamer backend (i.e. more supported media formats, well
tested media backends)
- more easily extensible protocol because of XML and easier to extend
because of Python
- asynchronous notifications other the network (you can subscribe to
song changes, etc, XMMS2 also has this)
- webradios dedicated mode
- integrated web interface

It has the following drawbacks compared to mpd :
- uses more memory and perhaps more CPU time (because written in
Python vs optimized C) but it keeps reasonable, you'll see if you give
it a try.
- no ReplayGain support (this is a planned feature).
- younger project thus less stable, less tested although the codebase
is not very large (we use everything we can reuse) and we've got quite
a big test suite.
- no Zeroconf support.
- only 3 clients (cmdline, web, maemo platform) and GUIs still have rough edges.

This is a summary of what I know. I think all those projects are
complementary. deejayd does not have (yet?) unique features, but it is
a unique combination of features.

Also of interest, there is a page that explains why we started the project.
http://mroy31.dyndns.org/~roy/projects/deejayd/wiki/Why/

Should all this fit in the package description?

Thanks,

Alex

Bug#438619: xserver-xorg-video-intel: resets brightness to maximum upon chvt

2007-08-18 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.1.1-1
Severity: normal

Since the upgrade to 2:2.1.1-1, LCD brightness is set to the maximum when
switching to a virtual console or from a virtual console back to X.

I use the sony-laptop module on vanilla kernel 2.6.22 to set the brightness on
my laptop.

# cat /sys/class/backlight/sony/actual_brightness
0
# chvt 1
(coming back using CTRL+ALT+F7)
# cat /sys/class/backlight/sony/actual_brightness
50
(and screen is very bright)

Same behavior when playing a video (mplayer -vo xv or -vo x11) :
$ cat /sys/class/backlight/sony/actual_brightness
0
$ mplayer some_video.mpeg
$ cat /sys/class/backlight/sony/actual_brightness
50
(and screen is very bright)

Fixing the problem until the next chvt or the next video playback :
# echo 1 /sys/class/backlight/sony/brightness

Downgrading to xserver-xorg-video-intel (2:2.1.0-2) fixes the problem.

Cheers,

Alex

Bug#438619: xserver-xorg-video-intel: resets brightness to maximum upon chvt

2007-08-19 Thread Alexandre Rossi
 Could you try reverting the following commit in 2.1.1?
 http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=xorg/driver/xf86-video-intel.git;a=commitdiff;h=a85dd7adc35601a988b1001e8b3c8aa4d53de0c0;hp=c989cb4897e2e2d395c52df4822290a767cdc866

I reverted the commit in the git trunk (git revert
0da4f2b0cd7203377ad10407928a367b8c6d310e seems to have done the trick)
and it fixes the problem.

 Also, testing the latest git code might be nice anyway. There's an howto
 at http://bgoglin.livejournal.com/10936.html

I can reproduce the bug using the git trunk.

Bug#421418: No XV here too

2007-05-28 Thread Alexandre Rossi

Does this also happen if you don't use Option SWcursor or enable the
DRI?

Disabling SWcursor partially fixes the problem : XV is enabled but I
get the blue screen upon xv input.

Upgrading to xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.0.0.0-2 fixes the problem. Thanks!

I had SWCursor enabled because of suspend to RAM problems (cursor did
not show upon resuming) but this is not an issue anymore with the
-intel driver.

Bug#421888: vbetool problem?

2007-05-18 Thread Alexandre Rossi

Hi,

I have the exact same problem : hibernate-ram does not bring the
screen backlight on (with sysfs and VbetoolPost activated).

Strangely, 's2ram -f -p' works perfectly. Before the upgrade to
xserver-xorg-video-intel, 's2ram -f' was enough to fix the problem.

It seems that uswsusp carries an slightly different version of the
vbetool source (which is included in uswsusp) or perhaps does some
magic on its own.

Hoping to give some clues,

Alex

If I do, X.org starts but no XV, which is deactivated due to failing

 Nothing like that in the BIOS menus.

Note that some BIOSes obfuscate it as DVMT (Dynamic Video Memory
Technology) or some other fancy marketing term.

The BIOS of my VAIO VGN-B1VP does not have more than Date, Password,
IDE devices and Boot device settings.

Anyway this used to work perfectly with xserver-xorg-video-i810, so
this seems to be a problem with the new driver.

Bug#315926: Does not stop xscreensaver anymore

2005-08-04 Thread Alexandre ROSSI
Hi,

I am also having this issue with the 1.0.4-1 version. I don't use
xscreensaver, but the DPMS extension of Xorg blanks the screen even
while playing a movie.
I do not think this is relevant, but this occurs with both totem-xine
and totem-gstreamer.

I have looked at the totem source code and learned in what I could
understand that it simulates key events using the Xtest extension.
This extension loads okay on my debian box.

I have tried to monitor fake key events using an instance of xev
attached to the totem window, but those do not show. Should they show
anyway?

Feel free to ask me for more info, I would be glad to help on this bug.

Bug#485286: lazygal: EXIF comment tag fill with 0

2008-06-17 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Hi,

 I use http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ to edit exif.
 I put some test case on http://castet.matthieu.free.fr/tmp/test_exif/.

 IMG_0870_exiftool_jpeg_comment_unicode.JPG doesn't work. As your link said
 it seem to be utf-8.

 IMG_0870_exiftool_image_description.JPG doesn't work. Reading
 self.get_exif_string('Exif.Image.ImageDescription') should fix it.

 IMG_0870_exiftool_usercomment_unicode.JPG doesn't work on my machine. It
 seems python-exiv2 already does some conversion...

Okay all is good now, I can build an album with all your pictures.
This is fixed for the next version.

Bug#485286: lazygal: EXIF comment tag fill with 0

2008-06-18 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Hi,

 But there a problem for IMG_0870_exiftool_usercomment_unicode.JPG : the exif
 is in big endian format. And it this case it seems it is UTF-16BE that
 should be used.

Thanks a lot, this should be okay for your examples now.

 Also the .strip('\0') is finaly not correct : it is what eat the Traling
 zero for UTF-16LE. I attach a posible fix.

My fix assumes utf-16be. utf-16le seems also to be possible because of
specific applications, I'll see about it when the problem is brought
up.

Thanks,

Alex

XvSetPortAttribute, I found out that the offending port attribute was XV_PIPE.

Xine, upon closing the video driver, restores all the port attributes value to
the state in which they were before Xine video driver was started. But
setting XV_PIPE to its default value '0' does not work if clone mode is
disabled in i810. Here is a simple program that shows the issue. The program
simply tries to restore the XV_PIPE attribute to 0.

#include stdio.h
#include X11/Xlib.h
#include X11/extensions/Xvlib.h

// Compile with :
// $ gcc -lXv -o test_spa test_spa.c

int main(int argc, char **argv){

XvPortID port = 57; // Find this in the output of xvinfo | grep 'port base'
char *attr_name = XV_PIPE;
Atom attr;
int p_value;

display = XOpenDisplay(:0.0);
XSynchronize(display, True);

attr = XInternAtom(display, attr_name, False);
printf(%s is %d\n, attr_name, (int)attr);

XvGetPortAttribute(display, port, attr, p_value);
printf(%s has value %d\n, attr_name, p_value);

printf(Trying to set %s to %d...\n, attr_name, p_value);
if( XvSetPortAttribute(display, port, attr, p_value) == Success ){
printf( success.\n);
}else{
printf( failed!\n);
}

XCloseDisplay(display);

return 0;
}
--

Output is :
$ ./test_spa

Package: gnome-session

So I tried to remove gnome-power-manger using dpkg -P --force-depends and
gnome-session seems to work perfectly. Am I missing something or should
gnome-power-manager be a Recommends: ?

Hi,

  As subject says, deejayd should depend on real package deejayd-xine and
  only fallback on deejayd-mediabackend.
[...]
  (I actually believe it is a policy violation to only depend on virtual
  package, but am too lazy to look it up, so have just tagged this as
  severity normal)

Cannot find it in the policy but anyway there is no need for a virtual
package here so I'll just go for a dependency on deejayd-xine |
deejayd-gstreamer.

Bug#547815: deejayd: manipulates site-packages/ directly, failing with Python 2.6

2009-09-22 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Hi,

Thanks for your bug report.

 Starting from Python 2.6, the installation paths for distutils have
 changed. Instead of /usr/lib/pythonX.Y/site-packages, the default has
 now changed to /usr/local.

The build with python2.6 has been fixed in version 0.8.1-1 which has
not been uploaded to the archive due the lack of a sponsor.

A new version is available on mentors.d.n and it still fixes the
issue. Someone said I should join #debian-python on OFTC and add
pointers to [my] packages to the channel topic. I'll do that when I
get the chance.

 To fix this issue, the recommended approach is to pass
 --install-layout=deb to the python setup.py invocation. This is
 already the default if you use dh - or migrate to dh, which is also
 recommended.

I need backports to lenny, and --install-layout is not recognized in
Debian lenny.

I think the problem is about the same with dh : does not work with lenny.

Therefore, if this is not against policy, I prefer to keep my current
solution, that is until squeeze is frozen, at which point I'll migrate
the box I need backports on to squeeze.

Thanks, and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong with my solution.

Bug#612582: netstat: misleading info on dual stack hosts for sockets without IPV6_V6ONLY

2011-02-09 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Package: net-tools
Version: 1.60-23
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream ipv6

Hi,

The information reported by netstat can be misleading on a dual-stacked host
(ipv4 and ipv6) whith a socket not using IPV6_V6ONLY.

For instance, my box is running apache which is happily handling ipv4 traffic,
but :
$ netstat -nl4 | grep ':80'
$ netstat -nl | grep ':80'
tcp6   0  0 :::80   :::*LISTEN
$

This is a problem because one may rely on this output to restrict services to
a particular protocol.

Proposed fixes :
- netstat -nl4 should list ipv6 sockets not using IPV6_V6ONLY.
- ipv6 sockets not using IPV6_V6ONLY should be differenciated in the output of
  netstat.

I'll be glad to provide more info, try to implement a fix if my solutions are
acceptable, and to test a fixed version.

Alex

Okay I had time tot investigate this further. That's why I'm renaming

The problem occurs when sending mail using ssmtp whith no trailing
newline character at the end of the body, and this was introduced by
the fix for #345780.

Here is a proposed fix that works for me.

Bug#504041: lazygal: empty placeholder image in menu if directory has no images

2008-10-31 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Hi,

 If a subdirectory contains no images (directly, it may have them nested
 further down) then the placeholder image is empty.

Could you elaborate a bit because this works for me. Which theme are you using?

 It is not immediately obvious that one should click on such an empty
 space on a webpage in order to proceed.

Yep that's a bug for me.

There was an issue close to this for dirs that do not contain any
pictures, and whose childs do not either. I just fixed it in the
developement version.

 Perhaps a non-empty generic image could be provided.

No no lazygal go (or should go) as deep as needed to provide a subgal picture.

 This may be the problem I see.
 This problem may be related to the dot in directory problem.
 The examples of empty placeholders I noticed are for directories
 that contain supposed images (directories mislabeled as images).

Okay so the patch for this is the following.

Bug#504039: lazygal: link originals without copying

2008-11-04 Thread Alexandre Rossi
tag 504039 fixed-upstream
thanks

 The -O option copies the original files into the new tree.
 I have a readonly hierarchy of large images that I don't want to
 copy but I do want to be linked into the html pages.

 I suggest a new option that allows a directory base to be specified
 and the original file link be made relative to that.

Done. Please test if you have a chance to do so. You should find an
up-to-date snapshot on the program's website.

Bug#504039: lazygal: link originals without copying

2008-11-05 Thread Alexandre Rossi
 I'm not sure if this is considered to be a bug, but if I run
 the following two commands, the final html files contain links
 to /FIRST:

lazygal -o /tmp/out --check-all-dirs --clean-destination \
-O --orig-dir=/FIRST /tmp/in
lazygal -o /tmp/out --check-all-dirs --clean-destination \
-O --orig-dir=/SECOND /tmp/in

 I guess it is hard to know whether to update a file or not.
 Perhaps storing a file in the output directory that indicates
 how the hierarchy was built would allow to rebuild files that
 need to be amended.

Exactly. Workaround is :
$ find /tmp/out -name '*html' -exec rm {} \;
(this is what I use when I change command line options which affect
the XHTML output)

I could put a state file that would hold the command line and the
program's version. But then, a dependency link would have to exist
between the command line options and the output targets affected by
such option, in order to invalidate the right targets. I think it is
too much work and too much code complexity for not much gain. Maybe
later.

 Now that I think about it, there is in fact a third case
 which I can think of being useful. Something like:

--orig-base=http://another.server/path/to/orig/
--orig-base=ftp://another.server/path/to/orig/

I would use different output directories for this use case, at least
for the moment.

 By the way, in the snapshot I downloaded
 ( lazygal-darcs20081105061812.tar.gz ), you seem to have created
 parent_index_link in generators.py and so the parent links are
 no longer created in */index.html since the other code is still
 looking for index_link.

Well spotted, this is now fixed.

Thanks,

Alex

Bug#513228: linux-2.6: please add intel AGP G41 chipset support

2009-01-27 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Package: linux-2.6

Hi,

The patch for intel AGP G41 chipset support is part of upstream 2.6.29.
It applies without modifications to Debian's 2.6.26 (provided the agp: Fix
stolen memory counting on Intel G4X has been applied before) and adds support
for this new AGP chipset. It even makes xserver-xorg-video-intel stable with
the Intel X4500HD.

Here is the patch.

Cheers,

 If, however, you're absolutely sure that building with 'nostrip' in
 DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS is not producing unstripped binaries (i.e., `file
 /usr/bin/amule` says stripped instead of not stripped), then please
 let me know and I'll investigate what's going wrong. But please be sure
 of it to the extent possible!

amule-2.2.1$ DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nostrip debuild
[..]
amule-2.2.1$ file obj-x86_64-linux-gnu/src/amule
obj-x86_64-linux-gnu/src/amule: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64,
version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux
2.6.8, not stripped

So I guess I must have messed up the environment when I tried. I am
really sorry to have bothered you with this, I thought the amule build
system was stripping the binaries somehow... and that --enable-debug
prevented this from happennig.

Sorry again, my report is invalid.

Bug#530371: man-db: man -l does not work anymore

2009-05-24 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Package: man-db
Version: 2.5.5-1
Severity: normal

I used to preview the manpages I write using the following command:
$ man -l manpage.1

This does not work anymore and displays nothing.

It is easy to reproduce :
$ cp /usr/share/man/man1/man.1.gz .
$ gunzip man.1.gz
$ man -l man.1
$

Am I missing something? Isn't this the standard way to preview manpages?

Thanks,

Alex

The failure occurs when the variable contains the following value:
' 56) #522628 gnome-terminal: duplicate access keys for menu bar:

It seems that line is truncated somehow in the middle of the utf-8 character
because line[78:79] is '\xe2' instead of:
 u'”'.encode('utf-8')
'\xe2\x80\x9d'

From a quick look at the code, I think decoding should happen as soon as
possible, and from there, working internally with unicode strings, and then,
as late as possible, just before output, encode.

Anyhow, truncation is good with the unicode string:
 line2 = '  56) #522628  gnome-terminal: duplicate access keys for menu bar:

Bug#535374: deejayd: bashism in debian/rules

2009-07-02 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Hi,

 This is fixed in a version currently awaiting a sponsor at
 debian.mentors.net . As I do not have a sponsor for this package
 anymore, the fix may take time to reach the archive.

 I haven't seen you send a RFS to -mentors.

The current version should have been sponsored but my former sponsor
seems to busy with other things. I didn't want to bother him again.

 I may eventually sponsor it, but you should send a sponsorship request
 to -mentors first, and make some changes such as checking it against policy
 3.8.2, making it lintian -IE --pedantic clean (if you disagree with any of
 the tags then say why and we'll discuss it), and probably moving the direct
 changes in .diff.gz to a saner patch management system such as quilt or
 dpatch.

RFS: coming.
Policy 3.8.2: done in trunk.
lintian -IE --pedantic clean: is at least lintian clean, will check
for -IE and --pedantic
saner patch management: not an issue for the version in mentors, as
there are no changes outside the debian directory. Will fix whenever
that is not the case anymore. Anyway, individual patches are available
in the upstream VCS.

Thanks for your comments, and I'll send a RFS as soon as I've
addressed them, which should be this Week-End.

Alex

Bug#575056: linux-2.6: libata based drivers migration script does not migrate /etc/crypttab

2010-03-23 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Package: linux-2.6

Hi,

The migration to libata based drivers migration went very well when I upgraded
the kernel to 2.6.33-10, but the migration process forgot about /etc/crypttab
where my encrypted /home info is. After manually changing it, everything was OK.

The crypttab manual page does not say if cryptsetup supports UUID=, but
#445189 says so.

Bug#575118: deejayd-xine: needs to depend on libxine1-x

2010-03-24 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Hi,

 This package appears to need to depend on libxine1-x.

 I intend to remove the libxine1-x and libxine1-console dependencies from
 libxine1 once squeeze is released; at that point, this bug will become
 serious.

Okay thanks. My code contains a direct fopen on libxine.so.1 so I
should maybe also depend on libxine1-bin .

 It is recommended that you make use of dh_xine (supplied by libxine-dev) and
 have the package depend on ${xine-x:Depends}; that way, no changes (other
 than, perhaps, some source changes) will be needed once xine-lib 1.2 is
 released and uploaded to unstable.

The package interfaces with xine using python-ctypes, thus it does not
have libxine-dev as a build dependency. Therefore, using dh_xine would
need that extra build dependency. Should I add that big build
dependency only for dh_xine or should I compute de dependencies
manually (regarding wasting buildd time/space/bandwidth, etc) ?

Thanks,

Alex

 Your call. Since you specifically use libxine1, you may as well just directly
 depend on libxine1-x.

Okay I'll prepare a new version with this change.

 (Incidentally, pyxine may be of interest. It's packaged as python-pyxine.)

Back when we checked (about 2 years ago), pyxine did not work well
enough for us, and we ended up writing our own bindings using ctypes.

Thanks a lot,

be already started.

Now, this is in the @timed decorator from kaa.timer and using a dirty
print statement, I could get the only decorated function name which is
_sigchld_handler . This signal is triggered, because the ldconfig
child process terminates.

Knowing this, a working fix, as said, is as simple as delaying the
signal setting, as shown by the attached patch, which works.

In order to investigate, I compiled the vanilla kernel 2.6.32.{8,9,11}
and was not able to reproduce.

I can reproduce in less than 3 suspend/resume cycles using official
Debian kernel images linux-image-2.6.31-{3,4}-amd64 (all versions
since 2.6.32-9).

Therefore, I think this problem lays in the Debian specific changes
introduced in linux-2.6 version 2.6.32-9 .

I'll try to narrow down the issue to a specific patch.

thanks

Hi,

Same thing for me here, same hardware. I also think severity should be
grave, because it renders the package unusable.

Please feel free to ask me for more input, debugging info or testing
potential fixes.

If this is relevant for some reason, the cursor is displayed properly,
everything else is scrambled.

Cheers,

Bug#595187: linux-2.6: lots of OOPses on resume (NULL pointer dereference in file_ra_state_init)

2010-09-01 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Source: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-21
Severity: normal

Hi,

Since the upgrade from 2.6.32-20 - 2.6.32-21, my laptop fails to resume
properly into Xorg : the cursor only appears when I move it and there is
nothing much more I can do than switching to the console, login as root and
reboot.

In the console, I can see a lot of OOpses that are visible in the attached log
file. This did not happend with 2.6.32-20, or at least not before many
suspend cycles.

Here is the first of the many similar stack traces :

Bug#595190: isc-dhcp-client: goes into an infinite loop if server only answers on broadcast

2010-09-01 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Package: isc-dhcp-client
Version: 4.1.1-P1-9
Severity: normal

Hi,

I may have a misbehaving DHCP server :
--
$ cat /var/log/daemon.log.1 /var/log/daemon.log 2/dev/null | grep
dhclient | cut -d':' -f4- | uniq -c
 18225  DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 82.224.x.y port 67
 1  DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67
 1  DHCPACK from 82.224.x.y
 1  bound to 82.224.z.p -- renewal in 249667 seconds.
 15075  DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 82.224.x.y port 67
# dhcping -v -s 255.255.255.255
Got answer from: 82.224.x.y
received from 82.224.x.y, expected from 255.255.255.255
no answer
# dhcping -v -s 82.224.x.y
no answer
--

My ISP's DHCP server gives a 3-day lease. When this leases expires, dhclient
sends a DHCP request to the known server but the server seems to only answer
on broadcast 255.255.255.255. As a result, my logs ar filling with DHCPREQUESTs
for three days every 6 days.

dhclient should handle this case (request on broadcast after a number of
unanswered requests).

Feel free to ask for more info.

Alex

Bug#453754: Fixed for me

2010-09-17 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Hi,

For me, this has been fixed by migrating to squeeze. I was using
Option XvPreferOverlay with a patched version of the lenny driver,
but now I do not need to anymore. I use the standard squeeze binary
packages.

xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-4
linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64   2.6.32-21

$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
$ xvinfo | grep Adaptor
  Adaptor #0: Intel(R) Textured Video = this is the one that I
exprienced the bug with
  Adaptor #1: Intel(R) Video Overlay

But if I use Xine to play a video, the output show that it is using
the Textured Video XV adaptor and I do not experience the tearing.
--
Xine 1.1.19
video_out_dxr3: Failed to open control device /dev/em8300-0 (No such
file or directory)
video_out_xv: using Xv port 89 from adaptor Intel(R) Textured Video
for hardware colour space conversion and scaling.
video_out_xv: this adaptor supports the yuy2 format.
video_out_xv: this adaptor supports the yv12 format.

So this is fixed for me.

Bug#603738: acpi-support-base: CheckPolicy patch missed usage in powerbtn-acpi-support.sh

2010-11-16 Thread Alexandre Rossi
Package: acpi-support-base
Version: 0.137-6
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Hi,

While investigating why my laptop was shutting down after resume, I found a
syntax error in powerbtn-acpi-support.sh.

Due to the change in how CheckPolicy returns values, the test should be fixed
to test the return value instead of the echo'ed value.

The script appended to this report works as expected.

Please follow-up for more info.

Cheers,

Alex
