Bug#612519: initscripts: mountnfs ignore ASYNCMOUNTNFS=no for hotplug interfaces
Package: initscripts Version: 2.88dsf-13.1 Severity: normal /etc/default/rcS allow use option ASYNCMOUNTNFS=no to make NFS mounts synchronous. But this option is ignored when interface marked as 'hotplug' (not auto) in /etc/network/interfaces. I think the problem is in function exit_unless_last_interface, which one check only interfaces, listed in 'auto' statement and ignore all others, noted as 'hotplug'. By default all eth interfaces listed not as 'auto', but as 'hotplug' by installer. This cause option ASYNCMOUNTNFS=no useless in case of 'default installation of server with ethernet interface'. I see two solution for this problem: 1) check every interface, market as 'hotplug' to be online and wait until they complete mounting. 2) Keep current situation, anounce it as 'feature' and add note to rcS manual page about mandatory 'auto' declation for interfaces, add checking fo hotplug interfaces (non-empty hotplug statement) and print warning on screen, when ASYNCMOUNTNFS is disabled. -- System Information: Debian Release: 6.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (990, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=ru_RU.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages initscripts depends on: ii coreutils 8.5-1GNU core utilities ii debianutils 3.4.3Miscellaneous utilities specific t ii libc6 2.11.2-11Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii lsb-base3.2-27 Linux Standard Base 3.2 init scrip ii mount 2.17.2-9 Tools for mounting and manipulatin ii sysv-rc 2.88dsf-13.1 System-V-like runlevel change mech ii sysvinit-utils 2.88dsf-13.1 System-V-like utilities Versions of packages initscripts recommends: ii e2fsprogs 1.41.12-2 ext2/ext3/ext4 file system utiliti ii psmisc22.13-1utilities that use the proc file s initscripts suggests no packages. -- debconf-show failed -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#595711: linux-image-2.6.26-2-xen-686: Wrong free memory values for xen kernel with xenballoon use
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-2-xen-686 Severity: important I belive current version of xen (as domU) kernel for debian report free memory wrong: system reports lots of free memory, but acutally all memory is used up. Condition to reproduce: Xen evnironment, maxmem is very large (10-20GiB memory), mem relativly low (800-900MiB). Booted domU reports about 500MiB free, but if we try to use it, we will get swap (or oom/MemoryError is swap disabled) right after about 120MiB. I test this behavior in newer gentoo/SUSE kernel and they in same condition show that about 750MiB is used (this match experemental data). I belive, this somehow related to difference in drivers/xen/balloon.c, gentoo/SUSE version have some lines like totalram_pages--; (in balloon_append() function) and totalram_pages++; (in balloon_retrieve() function) Those lines are in Gentoo kernel (linux-2.6.34-xen) but absent in Debian (linux-image-2.6.26-2-xen-686) -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (990, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=ru_RU.utf8, LC_CTYPE=ru_RU.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#595711: linux-image-2.6.26-2-xen-686: Wrong free memory values for xen kernel with xenballoon use
В Пнд, 06/09/2010 в 07:59 +0100, Ian Campbell пишет: On Mon, 2010-09-06 at 04:03 +0400, George Shuklin wrote: I belive, this somehow related to difference in drivers/xen/balloon.c, gentoo/SUSE version have some lines like totalram_pages--; (in balloon_append() function) and totalram_pages++; (in balloon_retrieve() function) Those lines are in Gentoo kernel (linux-2.6.34-xen) but absent in Debian (linux-image-2.6.26-2-xen-686) Is the Gentoo kernel pvops or classic-Xen patches? Are you sure you are using the classic-Xen (linux-image-...-xen-{686,amd}) kernel rather than the pvops one (linux-image-...-686-bigmem, no 64 bit pvops in Lenny)? I wasn't aware that it applied to the classic-Xen case but the difference you describe sounds like this commit from upstream pvops: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/jeremy/xen.git;a=commit;h=3d65c9488cadd2f11bd4d60c7266e639ece5d0d6 Probably for a 2.6.26 classic-Xen kernel you'd need to adjust the path to drivers/xen/balloon/balloon.c and perhaps tweak some context a bit but the concept should still apply. Classic Xen (xen-686). pv_ops does not support preinflated ballooning (maxmem mem), so I stuck with classic xen. I think, balloon code does not differ (principally) in pv_ops and classic xen. And, in any way, this bug exists. And it really suck: application ask memory, one part of kernel (or libc?) thinking of free memory, kernel found 'no memory left' and start OOM killer. It walking and killing some random applications (include init). I'm testing kernel with with patch right now and it seems work fine - memory reporting correctly and oom kills only most bloated application requesting tons of memory. Bug#595711: more specific information
Sad, but still not working - same behavior Here simplest test. 1. Set mem=512, maxmem=15GiB (for XCP it is xe vm-memory-limits-set static-min=512MiB static-max=15GiB dynamic-min=2GiB dynamic-max=2GiB). 2. Boot vm. 3. Disable swap. 4. Run following in python (I test is with not only python, but with C application with malloc, etc): file(/proc/meminfo).readlines()[1] 'MemFree: 1924200 kB\n' a= *1024*1024*1024 file(/proc/meminfo).readlines()[1] 'MemFree:873480 kB\n' b= *1024*1024*512 Traceback (most recent call last): File stdin, line 1, in module MemoryError b= *1024*1024*256 c= *1024*1024*128 Traceback (most recent call last): File stdin, line 1, in module MemoryError file(/proc/meminfo).readlines()[1] 'MemFree:610724 kB\n' d= *1024*1024*64 e= *1024*1024*64 Traceback (most recent call last): File stdin, line 1, in module MemoryError file(/proc/meminfo).readlines()[1] 'MemFree:545128 kB\n' ... If we descend to lower values, (about 1-2 MiB), with MemFree about 400-500MiB we will get to OOM killer, rampaging around and killing randomly anyone (sshd, init, etc). I'm not familiar enough with Gentoo to know how to turn this tarball of patches into a functioning kernel source tree, it looks like it depends on a base kernel patchset from elsewhere or something. If the above test kernel doesn't fix the issue do you think you could create a tarball of the fully patched gentoo source and put it somewhere I can get it? Bug#595711: comparation with RHEL kernel
I check situation in same environment with 2.6.18-194.el5xen on CentOS. I found following: 1) 'unusable' memory exist 2) When oom state occur, no 'rampaging' oom_killer appear, only bloated application die. This behavior differ from describing above: In Debian oom_killer in same situation starts to kill some random processes with number much higher needed to free required memory. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#638854: ifplugd: Adding fractional delay for -t option
Package: ifplugd Version: 0.28-18 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch Right now minimal delay interface poll (-t option) is 1 second. This is fine in case of 'notebook' usage. We deploing ifplugd as monitorig tool for heartbeat network and we expected to have smaller polling delay. I've added new option -T which fill tv.useconds field and allow to use ifplugd with fractional values. Typical usage is ifplugd -d 0 -t 0 -T 1000 -r /opt/monitor. This option does not break in any way existing functionality (incuding trimming all incorrect values for -t to zero) and allow new usage of same code. -- Package-specific info: /sys/class/net/ interfaces: /sys/class/net/eth0/ /sys/class/net/eth1/ /sys/class/net/eth2/ /sys/class/net/eth3/ /sys/class/net/lo/ -- System Information: Debian Release: wheezy/sid APT prefers stable-updates APT policy: (500, 'stable-updates'), (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 3.0.0-1-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages ifplugd depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.41 Debian configuration management sy ii libc6 2.13-11Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii libdaemon00.14-2 lightweight C library for daemons ii lsb-base 3.2-27 Linux Standard Base 3.2 init scrip Versions of packages ifplugd recommends: ii ifupdown 0.7~alpha5+really0.6.10 high level tools to configure netw Versions of packages ifplugd suggests: pn wpasupplicant none (no description available) -- debconf information excluded #! /bin/sh /usr/share/dpatch/dpatch-run ## 07_add_fractional_delays.dpatch by root@cvt-xs6 ## ## All lines beginning with `## DP:' are a description of the patch. ## DP: No description. @DPATCH@ diff -urNad '--exclude=CVS' '--exclude=.svn' '--exclude=.git' '--exclude=.arch' '--exclude=.hg' '--exclude=_darcs' '--exclude=.bzr' ifplugd-0.28~/man/ifplugd.8 ifplugd-0.28/man/ifplugd.8 --- ifplugd-0.28~/man/ifplugd.8 2011-08-22 17:20:53.0 +0400 +++ ifplugd-0.28/man/ifplugd.8 2011-08-22 17:22:09.0 +0400 @@ -48,6 +48,9 @@ \fB\-t | \-\-poll-time=\f1 \fISECS\f1 Specify poll time in seconds (default: 1) .TP +\fB\-T | \-\-poll-utime=\f1 \fIUSECS\f1 +Specify poll time in microseconds, added to -t (default: 0) +.TP \fB\-u | \-\-delay-up=\f1 \fISECS\f1 Specify delay for configuring interface (default: 0) .TP diff -urNad '--exclude=CVS' '--exclude=.svn' '--exclude=.git' '--exclude=.arch' '--exclude=.hg' '--exclude=_darcs' '--exclude=.bzr' ifplugd-0.28~/man/ifplugd.8.xml.in ifplugd-0.28/man/ifplugd.8.xml.in --- ifplugd-0.28~/man/ifplugd.8.xml.in 2011-08-22 17:20:53.0 +0400 +++ ifplugd-0.28/man/ifplugd.8.xml.in 2011-08-22 17:20:53.0 +0400 @@ -132,6 +132,13 @@ Specify poll time in seconds (default: 1) /p/optdesc /option + + option + popt-T | --poll-utime=/opt argUSECS/arg/p + optdescp + Specify poll time in useconds, summing with -t (default: 1) + /p/optdesc + /option option popt-u | --delay-up=/opt argSECS/arg/p diff -urNad '--exclude=CVS' '--exclude=.svn' '--exclude=.git' '--exclude=.arch' '--exclude=.hg' '--exclude=_darcs' '--exclude=.bzr' ifplugd-0.28~/src/ifplugd.c ifplugd-0.28/src/ifplugd.c --- ifplugd-0.28~/src/ifplugd.c 2011-08-22 17:20:53.0 +0400 +++ ifplugd-0.28/src/ifplugd.c 2011-08-22 17:20:53.0 +0400 @@ -68,6 +68,7 @@ char *extra_arg = NULL; int polltime = 1, +pollutime = 0, delay_up = 0, delay_down = 5; @@ -483,7 +484,7 @@ struct timeval tv; tv.tv_sec = polltime; -tv.tv_usec = 0; +tv.tv_usec = pollutime; if (t) { int delay = t - time(NULL); @@ -664,6 +665,7 @@ -r --run=EXEC Specify program to execute (%s)\n -I --ignore-retvalDon't exit on nonzero return value of program executed (%s)\n -t --poll-time=SECS Specify poll time in seconds (%i)\n + -T --poll-utime=USECS Specify poll time in microseconds, add to -t (%i)\n -u --delay-up=SECSSpecify delay for configuring interface (%i)\n -d --delay-down=SECS Specify delay for deconfiguring interface (%i)\n -m --api-mode=MODEForce API mode (mii, priv, ethtool, wlan, auto) (%s)\n @@ -694,6 +696,7 @@ run, ignore_retval ? on : off, polltime, + pollutime, delay_up, delay_down, m, @@ -719,6 +722,7 @@ {iface,required_argument, 0, 'i'}, {run, required_argument, 0, 'r'}, {poll-time,required_argument, 0, 't'}, +{poll-utime, required_argument, 0, 'T'}, {delay-up,

I've done some additional research on that bug. Brief bug description: xe host-disable; xe host-reboot make host disabled endlessly after reboot without chances to be enabled: xe host-enable uuid= The specified host is disabled and cannot be re-enabled until after it has rebooted What I found: 1) That settings (host_disabled_until_reboot) is stored in /var/lib/xcp/local.db. Stopping xcp-xapi, removing that file and starting xcp-xapi back works . But ugly hack. 2) That attribute is written during reboot, initiated by xe host-reboot. Bug#680528: xcp-xapi: /etc/init.d/xendomains cause xapi to hand during boot
Package: xcp-xapi Version: 1.3.2-8 Severity: important During startup /etc/init.d/xendomains script is called. That script is installed with xen-utils-common witch xcp-xapi is depends on. That script calls /usr/sbin/xen as xen list /dev/null This 'xen' seems to call xapi: xen list ^Z [1]+ Stopped xen list root@lab-xh3:~# ps f PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND 3940 pts/6Ss 0:00 -bash 3982 pts/6T 0:00 \_ /usr/sbin/xapi list That call is never ends. I think this is not desired behavior: 1) Script xendomains is provided by xen-utils-common 2) /usr/sbin/xen is provided by xen-utils-common 3) 'list' seems be addressed to xm/xl toolstack (not sure) 4) TOOLSTACK is pointing to xapi. 5) XAPI is not ready to serve 'list' domains and start like it expect to be 'initialized', not queried. 6) Boot process do not finish. Bug#680102: More fixes for xen-api in Wheezy

I've been able to fix others already. Other than that, only #680102 is a concern. So 680102 is due to there not being an /etc/firstboot.d/ directory (as the ticket explains). I think we can fix this issue simply by mkdir'ing the directory /etc/firstboot.d/data at some point in xapi's installation. This would allow the pool-eject to proceed, but I think that there might be problems when the host reboots: since none of the firstboot scripts will be called, the host might not reinitialise properly. I think at this point that's all we can hope for. George, can you test that creating the /etc/firstboot.d/data directory gets you past the current exception your having? If this works good enough, let's make this the fix for now. Jon, do you have any other thoughts on this bug? Well, writing in /etc dynamically is *forbidden* by the Debian policy. The /etc folder is for configuration, not something else! If you were using /var/lib/xcp-xapi, ok, but not /etc. Could you think about a better way to fix? Sure, we can change what xapi thinks is the firstboot directory. See ocaml/xapi/xapi_globs.ml:593 : let first_boot_dir = /etc/firstboot.d/ We could change that to /var/lib/xcp/firstboot.d. I'd like to know whether creating the /etc/firstboot.d directory will solve the problem though, before we make that change. Very naive question: Why xcp wants to preserve original database? Isn't leaving pool same as 'fresh install' (means db creation). I think situation is somehow differ from XCP ISO where some magic settings was putted by installer inside 'initial database'. For xcp-xapi it is kinda easy, because host is still operational even without xapi. If we preserve networkd settings for management interface, this will allow to perform that operations via ssh without risks to go offline. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#674161: [Xen-API] Bug#674161: xcp-xapi: 'the device disappeared from xenstore' message during vbd-plug (vm-start)

I saw that code in device.ml (where exception was raised), it seems be checking that path in xenstore: (* Sanity check: ensure the backend domain exists *) let _ = try let (_: string) = t.Xst.read (sprintf /local/domain/%d/vm device.backend.domid) in () with Xenbus.Xb.Noent - raise (Device_backend_vanished device) in But even I was successfull, I unable to perform any IO in guest domain (I've get into initrd but I see no /dev/xvd* devices and no messages in dmesg related to new device). I was wrong about this. Workaround 'xenstore-write /local/domain/0/vm something' works and new device is available in guest domain. There is a separate problem with networking I'll report separately. Now but description is looking like this: xcp-xapi package does not write dom0 uuid in xenstore upon startup. This prevents normal device initialization. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

Bug#677509: xcp-xapi: migration of PV linux does not produce grace ARP
Package: xcp-xapi Version: 1.3.2-6 Severity: important Configuration: Two xcp-xapi hosts (default sid/xcp-xapi installation) in single pool. Network backend is bridge. After migration of 'idle' (doning nothing) virtual machine it stops to reply to ping for long time. AFAIK that caused by mac-learning table on upper level (hardware) switch, which route all frames to wrong port (ignoring migration). Usually this solved by sending 'grace ARP', allowing switch to learn new port for same MAC address. I'm not sure if guest kernel or virtualization toolstack is response for this. Tested with template 'Debian Squeeze 32', upgraded to sid.
