Bug#659378: xen-linux-system-3.1.0-1-amd64: gnome-shell fails to start

2012-02-10 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
Package: xen-linux-system-3.1.0-1-amd64
Version: 3.1.8-2
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

Gnome-shell fails to start when booted on a dom0. There are many
messages in the logs (but no Xorg errors) and I don't know which is relevant.
This is on a Wheezy machine just upgraded from Squeeze. The same kernel
presents no problem when stated without Xen.

On closer inspection this seems to be from before the upgrade. Please
disregard it. Sorry.

Are you sure? On my laptop which has the same configuration (Wheezy,
nvidia, gnome-shell) I can login without problems (I haven't tried
setting up a domU though).

> Can you

With nouveau the X server doesn't start at all. It just shows a flashing
underscore in the top-left corner (no errors in Xorg.0.log though). With
nvidia the crash happens after login and before the interface appears.

I hope I did it right, I redirected output to a file.

Are you sure? On my laptop which has the same configuration (Wheezy,
nvidia, gnome-shell) I can login without problems (I haven't tried
setting up a domU though).

My information may be out of date.

The kernel team does not support the nvidia driver, since we do not
have access to its source code and cannot predict what it will do. If
you are interested in pursuing a fix from that end, please feel free
to file a bug against src:nvidia-graphics-drivers, and the maintainers
might be able to point you in the right direction.

As a nouveau user, of course I'm biased and prefer it. ;-)
That making software free is making software better -and not only
technically- is obvious. But we are at the mercy of the hardware
manufacturers, at least for now, and the nouveau developers have a much
more difficult task to achieve that the nvidia developers.

My (ambitious) goal is to setup a windoze domU with VGA passthrough to

Sorry I forgot, it's GeForce GT 440.

Thanks. So this is an NVC3.

There has been some important relevant work in v3.3-rc2. Could you
test a 3.3-rc2 or newer kernel from kernel.org? See [2] for
instructions.
Thanks, but it didn't work (assuming I didn't make a mistake compiling
the kernel). I am confident that this will be fixed as newer kernels or
binary drivers become available. Will you leave this report open until
then, in case someone else has the same problem?

Thanks very much,

I am sorry, but I do. I consider non-free software to be fundamentally
immoral, and more so the practice of using it, as in this case, to
trespass on my freedom to use my (more than justly paid) hardware with
whatever OS I feel like.

I would argue that nvidia merely does not *want* to release their specs,
and that this is a practice that is hurting the industry.

But everyone is entitled to their opinion, and this is a bug report, not
a political forum.

Yes I am sorry, but the nouveau driver does not work at all with my
machine, 3.1 or 3.3 kernel, Xen or no Xen. The X server does not start
at all, I get a black screen with an underscore flashing. Let me know if

Bug#681241: dbus-x11: prevent dbus-launch if it is already started

2012-07-11 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
Package: dbus-x11
Version: 1.5.12-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I have been facing problems with DBus on a system running the awesome window
manager. I believe other non-Gnome manager are affected too.

I wanted to have access to the gnome-keyring in my awesome-wm session. Hence I
added "gnome-keyring-daemon --start" to my .xsessionrc. This however did not
work (for example subversion would hang while accessing its key) because
-apparently- gnome-keyring needs DBus to be running when the "--start" command
is executed.

Adding gnome-keyring --start to the $STARTUP variable also does not work,
because certain application such as ssh-agent mistakenly think that this is a
non-gnome-keyring session, and start themselves.

The best I could come up with is this patch, which does resolve the issue for
me and should not intrude on other window managers. It simply disables dbus-
launch if it is already started, e.g. from .xsessionrc.

Please consider it for inclusion or inform me if there is a better solution.

Regards,
Panayiotis

Bug#681241: dbus-x11: prevent dbus-launch if it is already started

2012-07-12 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
Thanks. Actually I came to the same conclusion and my final solution is
to wrap awesome in an awesome-after-gnome-keyring script. (Coming up
with a single sh command was too much for me :-) ). I placed in
Xsession.d a script just after the the startup command is determined
(around 56) to do the substitution. I suppose .xsession would work too,
I will try it later.

Just for the closure of it, the script 90x11-common_ssh-agent contains a
check to see if $SSH2_AUTH_SOCK is set. I assume this is an oversight,
because gnome-keyring-daemon sets this variable, but is started after 90x11.

Thanks, and sorry for your trouble,
Panayiotis

Bug#686492: apt: option Apt::Cache::Generate=false is broken

2012-09-02 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
Package: apt
Version: 0.8.15.10
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

The option Apt::Cache::Generate when given a false value (for example apt-cache
--no-generate pkgnames) results in the error:

E: The package cache file is an incompatible version

I believe this is the source of a regression in the bug:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=547550

Cleaning and recreating the cache does not help.

It would seem to me that either there is some bug in the code that checks for
compatibility in the headers of the cache, or that indeed a corrupted version
of the cache is written to disk.

Thanks, Best regards, Panayiotis

Bug#683192: fontconfig: Default font and/or fallback font selection algorithm fails for non-latin fonts

2012-07-29 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
Package: fontconfig
Version: 2.8.0-3.1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I apologize for my ignorance on the subject and I ask you to reassign this bug
as appropriate.

It seems that whatever algorithm the "fonts' subsystem" is using to select the
fonts it will export as 'serif', 'sans-serif' etc., it is making bad choices
for non-latin scripts.
In particular:

1) Open up icedove and try to compose a message in Greek. Icedove will report
the font as 'sans-serif' and the text will look nice.
2) Install package ttf-bitstream-vera.
3) Repeat step one. Now some fonts (noticeably the small greek letter pi) will
look quite ugly. It seems a math font is being used, which does not look
acceptably good in normal text.
4) Removing ttf-bitstream-vera fixes the problem.

Installing a new font on your system should not break installed apps, hence I
am reporting this as a bug. In particular Bitstream Vera (as fas as I know)
does not contain a Greek script (expept perhaps the troublesome letter pi), and
hence is not suitable as a default global 'sans-serif' font. Alternatively, the
fallback Greek script should be selected (as a whole) out of a font which
supports the whole range of Greek characters.

Thanks,
Panayiotis

Bug#683257: add support for non-American users

2012-07-30 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
Package: xscreensaver
Version: 5.15-3
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I use the awesome window manager and I am unable to use xscreensaver at all.

I can change keyboard layouts within my wm through certain key combinations.
These combinations do not work at the unlock screen of xscreensaver. This means
that if the screen locks while the keyboard is set to a language different to
the one that my password is written in, I cannot log back in, and my only
option is to kill the Xserver and lose my work.

Furthermore there is no way to tell what the current keyboard layout is. This
is very annoying and counter-productive for non-American users.

Xscreensaver needs at the very minimum to provide a widget through which the
keyboard layout can be viewed and controlled.

The argument that such a widget would clutter the screen is not worthy of
serious discussion. Also I find such attitudes to be chauvinist and racist to
the majority of people on the globe, and to have no place in a Free OS.

Bug#637766: pulseaudio: Gdm3 greeter and various applications hang due to custom configuration of Alsa and Pulse

2011-08-14 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
Package: pulseaudio
Version: 0.9.21-3+squeeze1
Severity: normal

Following instructions widely available on the Internet, I set-up pulse audio
to be the default ALSA device by creating the following /etc/asound.conf file:

pcm.pulse {
type pulse
}

ctl.pulse {
type pulse
}

pcm.!default {
type pulse
}

ctl.!default {
type pulse
}

On subsequent reboots gdm3 hanged (in my opinion, at the point it was about to
play the welcome beep).

After bypassing the problem -by deleting the gdm3 home dir- I found that sound
related applications, such as rhythmbox and gnome-volume-control, also hanged
when asked to interact with the soundcard.

The problems ceased, as soon as I deleted the above mentioned file.

2011-10-05 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
Package: libjarjar-java

Resolving dependencies with find, and possibly other tasks, report errors
caused by the above missing flag.

The attached patch solves this problem. The bug has been reported upstream
(http://code.google.com/p/jarjar/issues/detail?id=6) and I have posted the
change in the source code there.

Bug#642066: [bug #34331] Request to submit linux patches upstream

2011-10-14 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
Follow-up Comment #2, bug #34331 (project gnewsense):

Since the project page you sent a link to mentions that one of its goals is to
upstream the stable patches, I guess both this bug and the Debian bug can be
closed. I just wonder why the upstream process is taking so long...

Thank you.

Bug#640663: network-manager: Huawei mobile internet for Vodafone in Greece requires extra init string

2011-09-06 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
Package: network-manager
Version: 0.8.4.0-2
Severity: wishlist

Hi! I am a subscriber (contract) to the Vodafone network in Greece.

My modem is a Huawei USB modem (unsure of the model) with idVendor=0x12d1 and
idProduct=0x14c9.

The connection works with NetworkManager if and only if I write the init string
"ATQ0 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2" to /dev/ttyUSB0.

Could NetworkManager be configured with rules (based on modem type and
country/provider) to take care of this automatically? I have spent quite a lot
of time Googling for this information, and I imagine it would be a joy for new
users to have their connection work automatically.

Details:

Hi!

The Longsoon running Lemote Yeelong requires your patched kernel to function
properly. However the kernel does not install on Debian Wheezy.

After contacting the Debian maintainers, it was suggested that I ask you to
submit your patches upstream. It would be a great help to Debian users if you
could do this.

The Debian bug I opened is #642066.

It's not a random feature patch. X is unusable on Yeelong without this
patch.( So I am told, I have not tried ). Recompiling X takes about 3
hours on Yeelong. And nothing prevents you to drop the patch when it's
included upstream. Quilt will just tell about it.

What do others think?

Bug#594684: Package

2011-09-20 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
I was asking other USERS what they think.

So, let's get this straight:
1) Your users have a found a critical bug with your package.
2) Your users invested a great deal of time and work in tracking down
the bug, and fixing it, what YOU should be doing.
3) Your users have supplied you with a working patch, and built a
working package, which you only have to review and upload.

But YOU would rather leave a great deal of your users (and actually
users who are using a Free computer) without an Xserver. So that you
don't have to type the command 'rm 01_mips-sarea.diff' sometime in the
future.

Great work and great sense of responsibility. Keep it up.

P.S. From what I understand from previous messages, the patch has
already been submitted upstream. But isn't that your job TOO? Otherwise
what's the point of the BTS or even a distribution?

2011-09-20 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
I apologize for using harsh language. But you must understand there is limited
time I can give to this issue, and I used it by recompiling the package.
Personally I have no problem compiling a new xserver every few months. When I
find time, and if it has not been done already, I'll submit the patch upstream.

Bug#644047: locales: /etc/default/locale ignored, locale set to C

2011-10-02 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
Package: locales
Version: 2.13-21
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

This is probably not a fault of package "locales", so please reassign it as you
see appropriate.

   * What led up to the situation?
This is a new installation of Wheezy on a Lemote Yeeloong laptop
(mipsel). My kernel is custom-compiled Linux-Libre kernel, but I don't believe
this is related.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
On this system I generated Greek and English UTF-8 locales by running
dpkg-reconfigure on this package. Then I set the default locale to
"en_US.UTF-8" in debconf. I've also tried setting the default locale by adding
an appropriate LANG assignment in /etc/profile and /etc/environment.

   * What was the outcome of this action?
The file /etc/default/locale is generated correctly. "locale -a" reports the
desired locales generated. However "locale" reports all locale settings set to
"C". Greek characters display as question marks in virtual terminals and gnome
terminal.

Thank you for your time, I will be glad to provide any further information you
need.

Hmmm, maybe this is not a bug. I have grown a habit of opening invalid
bugs recently... :-) Sorry!

The default locale at the GDM login screen was set to ANSI. Selecting
English resolves this problem, and the setting is saved for future logins.

So the only question is why ANSI is selected by default. I could have
accidentally selected it. Or not.

Rereading this bug report, I feel I must apologize for the harsh and

Bug#647257: lightspark-common: lightspark does not work with 16-bit color depth

2011-11-01 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
Package: lightspark-common
Version: 0.5.2.1-1panayk1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

On a Lemote Yeeloong (MIPS), Lightspark does not work with the16-bit
color depth screen. It gives the error "No suitable graphics configuration
found".

After applying the attached patch, I could get some flash applications
to work with the standalone player. I am not sure whether non-24 bit visuals
should be allowed, but for now it works.

It is the latest kernel in Wheezy 3.2.0-2-amd64. It is the nouveau
driver, and gnome-shell that are working together.
> Do you know how the issue got resolved?
I am not sure if it is the updates that got this working, or the fact
that I purged the nvidia driver and removed my /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I
attach the problematic xorg.conf.

Do you mean make it with Xorg -configure? It creates three Device
sections, with nouveau, visa and fbdev drivers, three Monitor sections,
and three Screen sections. If I remove fbdev and visa, with the
corresponding Monitor and Screen sections, the xserver does not start.
When I get home, I will test whether it is the existence of the file
alone that causes the xserver not to start. I will also test again with
the xorg.conf I sent you, just in case.

BTW, since glxinfo outputs Direct rendering: yes and the nouveau module
is listed in lsmod, that confirms that the nouveau driver is in use, right?

One more thing, when I turned on the screen today (already running
system), there was some graphic corruption: black areas that went on and
off, and I had to restart the xserver.

Bug#659378: the nouveau driver does not work at all with my machine (configurations work)

2012-03-26 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
Hey,

Some more information, both the xorg.conf I attached and the one
generated by Xorg (without any changes) work, except that the one I
attached starts the Xserver in a very low resolution. The situation is
the same under Xen, i.e. it works.

Bug#646890: xserver-xorg-core: xserver crashes on YeeLoong despite mips-sarea.patch

2011-10-28 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.11.1.901-1panayk1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

On MIPS YeeLoong, the xserver crashes at startup with a segmentation
fault, despite having applied the mips-sarea patch.
The segmentation fault occurs at line 1123 of hw/xfree86/vgahw/vgaHW.c.
The attached patch resolved the issue for me, but it is only a
workaround because I expect it disables VGA output.

Bug#508670: gnome-power-manager: g-p-m does not work correctly when more than one users are simultaneously logged in

2008-12-13 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
Package: gnome-power-manager
Version: 2.22.1-4
Severity: normal

I have noticed some strange behaviour from gnome-power-manager.

I have enforced sleep_type_ac=hibernate and sleep_computer_ac=600 for all users
through gconf-editor, so that the computer automatically hibernates after 10
minutes of inactivity.

I expected the computer to hibernate when ALL users logged in have been
inactive for this period of time.

Instead, what happens is that if ANY user has been logged in and inactive for
10 minutes, the computer hibernates
even if there is someone working on the computer.

Would it be possible for running instances of g-p-m to communicate with each
other to prevent this from happening?

It looks like you need to do the same change as Jim Hague[1]. You might
be able to use Jim's patch too. If not, then just open your bundles.info

org.mortbay.jetty.

Thanks, it worked this time!

Bug#579942: Workaround in 0.7.3-dev

2011-03-06 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis

Hi!

Apparently upstream has released a workaround for this bug. From the
changelog:

attach-to-process (-p, --process) now works; applications
such as Thunderbird can be started by doing:

thunderbird & sleep 5; alltray --process $(pgrep thunderbird-bin)

Also, this means that AllTray can attach to a process given
its PID, so long as it obeys the specs.

Icedove still doesn't work out-of-the-box, but the workaround does:

bash -c 'icedove & sleep 1; alltray -H --process $(pgrep icedove-bin)'

Thank you for your time. I think you can close this bug. But is would be
helpful to post the workaround somewhere easily accessible.

Regards,
Panayiotis

Bug#579942: alltray: fails when started from "run application" or "startup applications"

2010-05-02 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
Package: alltray
Version: 0.71a-1
Severity: normal

When starting Alltray with an argument from the "Run Application" dialog, the
target application starts undocked.
The same happens at startup if an item "alltray application" is added to the
"Startup Applications" list.
For example to reproduce, press Alt+F2 to bring up the Run Application dialog.
Then type "alltray icedove", assuming icedove is installed. On my system,
icedove now starts undocked and not minimized to tray as expected.
I think this bug affects alltray when started without a terminal. Since this
only happens without a terminal unfortunately I cannot provide debugging
information.

2010-07-15 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
Package: alarm-clock-applet

Severity: wishlist

There is an option to start the alarm clock on start-up. It would be convenient

Bug#589373: xserver-xorg-core: X server does not start with Xen and nvidia card

2010-07-16 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.7.7-2
Severity: normal

Hi! I am trying to setup Squeeze as dom0. However I cannot get the X server to
start. I have tried drivers vesa, nv and nvidia. The latter causes the system
to hang. Here is my output from driver nv. The output from vesa is similar (has
the same errors).

Need to figure out why xkbcomp fails. What versions of xkb-data and
x11-xkb-utils are installed?

Cheers,
Julien

Also don't forget the line:

(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not

My xkb-data is at version 1.8-1 and x11-xkb-utils is at version 7.5+2.

Bug#412437: Interested in contributing

2011-04-18 Thread Panayiotis Karabassis
Hi, I am interested in working on this.

I have already started putting together a 1.9.4 package from scratch. Of
course, if you could point me to the work already done, it would be helpful.

I am working on the amd64 architecture, and the first problem I've run
into is the lack of amd64 vendor-binaries, but I believe I can get past
this.

What I will surely need help with is the 'branding issue'. Maybe there
is a graphic designer interested?
