Looking at the code and the changelog, it appears it's been pretty much unusable since 4.3.0.dfsg.1-9 was uploaded on 9th December 2004, so I guess it's not a particular popular utility. But I find it very useful, so I tracked down what's going wrong. The problem is quoting of the arguments passed to Xvfb - both $XVFBARGS and $LISTENTCP are quoted, so each is passed as a single argument and Xvfb fails to understand them. Removing the double quotes allows the shell to split them into several arguments to Xvfb, and xvfb-run works once again. Bug#188448: Suggest to reupload with 32bit archs
Hello, given that the last email is from 24 Sep 2004 and that abuse-sdl seems to be fundamentally broken on 64bit archs I suggest removing abuse-sdl from sarge and re-uploading with only the 32bit archs Debian supports. Then this bug can be downgraded to important and the 32bit archs will re-enjoy abuse (well, since I've never been able to play it, I hope ...) Then, probably post-Sarge, you can find all those 32bit assumptions, fix them and re-enable the 64bit archs. The other option would be to uploaded the fixed package ASAP, if you already did correct the errounous 32bit assumptions ... What do you think? Greetings Helge -- Dr. Helge Kreutzmann, Dipl.-Phys. Bug#275668: Suggest to remove from Sarge
Hello, given that this package is currently not able to install the non-free ccc compiler, that gcc is available and improving while ccc is essentially dead upstream and that the number of people doing serious number crunching on alpha is (unfortunately) strongly decreasing I suggest removing this package from sarge. Further the maintainer has not yet even acknowledged this bug (MIA?). If you (the maintainer) already have a fix in your pipeline, please upload it ASAP (and in the meantime, tag this bug pending). Bug#292290: XFS corruption under 2.6.8
I installed a system on XFS deciding to try the new shiny efficient filesystem now availible in DI. I started having issues where the system would no longer be able to exec programms but all running programs would work fine So I'd reboot peek at the logs which didn't have anything useful. and go about doing my normal computing stuff until it happened again rinse repeat until today about a fortnight after I install when XFS decices it can't repair the filesystem and prints gobs and gobs into my kernel log. so. I now have to re-install and then install a new kernel-image. :( -- Grant Diffey aka nevyn http://www.computerbank.org.au/ http://melbourne.wireless.org.au/ pgpyzsohjh02B.pgp Description: PGP signature

Well, normally there is http://www.backports.org/debian/dists/woody/bogofilter/binary-i386/ but, it doesn't have any other versions. Based on past reports, I would say that using any bogofilter debs from backports.org is a surefire way to introduce corruption. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#294431: Installation error on machines lacking a FQDN
severity 294431 normal thanks I'm reducing severity of this bug since a small change in configration file (changing configuration file is expected for a service like squid) is sufficient to fix it. Bug#293932: [Python-Dev] license issues with profiler.py and md5.h/md5c.c
On Tue, 8 Feb 2005 15:52:29 -0500, Jeremy Hylton [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Maybe some ambitious PSF activitst could contact Roskind and Steve Kirsch and see if they know who at Disney to talk to... Or maybe the Disney guys who were at PyCon last year could help. I contacted Jim. His response follows: --- I'm a strong supporter of Opensource software, but I'm probably not going to be able to help you very much. I could be much more helpful with understanding the code or its use ;-). To summarize what I'll say: I don't own the rights to this stuff. ... but I don't believe there are any patents that I was ever involved with that might encumber this work. I would note that my profiler code is really very rarely used in commercial products, and it is much more typically used by developers (I guess a developer toolkit, if sold, would use it). I'm pretty delighted that the code has found so much use by developers over the years. As I noted in the intro to the documentation, I had only been coding in Python for 3 weeks when I wrote it. On the positive side, it exposed many weaknesses in many developer's code (including our own at InfoSeek), as well as in core Python code (subtle bugs in the interpreter) that surely helped everyone. Even though I was a newbie, It was VERY carefully crafted,, and I'd expect that it would take a fair amount of effort to reproduce it (and that is is probably why it has not been changed much... or at least no one told me when they changed/fixed it ;-) ). With regard to why I probably can't help much. First off, InfoSeek (holder of the copyright) was bought by Disney, and I don't know what if anything has eventually become of the tradename. There is a chance that Disney owns the rights... and I have no idea who to ask there :-/. Second, I took a look at the Copyright, and it sure seems pretty permissive. I'm amazed if folks want something more permissive. This is what I found on the web for it: Copyright © 1994, by InfoSeek Corporation, all rights reserved. Written by James Roskind.10.1 Permission to use, copy, modify, and distribute this Python software and its associated documentation for any purpose (subject to the restriction in the following sentence) without fee is hereby granted, provided that the above copyright notice appears in all copies, and that both that copyright notice and this permission notice appear in supporting documentation, and that the name of InfoSeek not be used in advertising or publicity pertaining to distribution of the software without specific, written prior permission. This permission is explicitly restricted to the copying and modification of the software to remain in Python, compiled Python, or other languages (such as C) wherein the modified or derived code is exclusively imported into a Python module. INFOSEEK CORPORATION DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES WITH REGARD TO THIS SOFTWARE, INCLUDING ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS. IN NO EVENT SHALL INFOSEEK CORPORATION BE LIABLE FOR ANY SPECIAL, INDIRECT OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER RESULTING FROM LOSS OF USE, DATA OR PROFITS, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, NEGLIGENCE OR OTHER TORTIOUS ACTION, ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE USE OR PERFORMANCE OF THIS SOFTWARE. As I recall, I probably personally created the terms of the above license. I used a similar license on my C/C++ grammar, and Infoseek just added a bunch of wording to be sure that they were not at risk, and that their name would not be used in vain (or in advertising material). I think they were also interested in limiting its use to Python but I don't think that is a concern that would bother you. I read the link you directed me to, and its primary focus seemed ot be on patents for related or included technology. I don't believe that infoseek applied for or got any patents in this area (and certainly if they did so without my name, it would probably invalidate the patent), and I'm sure I didn't get any patents in this area at Netscape/AOL. In fact I don't think I got any patents back in 1994 or 1995. My only prior patent dated back to about 1983 (a hardware patent) that has since expired. I have some patents since (roughly) 1995, and even though I don't think any of them relate to profiling (though some did relate to languages, or more specifically, security in languages), I wouldn't want to mess with assigning rights to any of those patents, as they belong to AOL/Netscape. Here again, to my knowledge, none of my patents relate in any way to this area (profiling). Sadly, if they did, I would not have the right to assign them. I'm sure you're just doing your job, and following through by dotting all the I's and crossing all T's. My suggestion is to (as you said) work around the issue. You could always re-write the code from scratch, as the approaches are not rocket science and are pretty thoroughly explained. I wouldn't suggest it unless
Bug#293865: libxml2 2.6.16 does not work with DCGUI-QT
Package: dcgui-qt Version: 0.3.2-2 Followup-For: Bug #293865 Hi, the bug is actually in libdc0. Bug#294621: xwhois: server file is not found, program won't start
tag 294621 patch thanks An earlier maintainer of this package overrode the default location of xwhois.servers, defined by the XWHOIS_SERVERS macro, by editing the confgiure script. Re-running autoconf erased that change, since configure.in had the original default. I think a reasonable way to override XWHOIS_SERVERS would be to make this change to debian/rules: --- xwhois-0.4.2/debian/rules~ 2005-02-13 01:04:45.0 + +++ xwhois-0.4.2/debian/rules 2005-02-13 01:04:45.0 + @@ -29,7 +29,7 @@ build: test -f config.cache || ./configure --prefix=/usr - $(MAKE) + $(MAKE) XWHOIS_SERVERS=/etc/X11/xwhois/servers touch stamp-build clean: debclean -- Ben Hutchings Theory and practice are closer in theory than in practice. - John Levine, moderator of comp.compilers -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#294719: No need for libproplist0-dev?
Hi, I just tried to compile the wdm source package in Sarge, and it seems to compile fine _without_ libproplist0-dev (which I can't install, indeed). Is libproplist0-dev really needed? According to packages.d.o, the contents of libproplist0-dev are: usr/include/proplist.h usr/lib/libPropList.a usr/lib/libPropList.la usr/lib/libPropList.so usr/share/doc/libproplist0-dev/README.gz usr/share/doc/libproplist0-dev/changelog.Debian.gz libdevel/libproplist0-dev usr/share/doc/libproplist0-dev/changelog.gz usr/share/doc/libproplist0-dev/copyright Of which supposedly proplist.h should be referenced by some source file in wdm, but: 8 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/src/debian/wdm/wdm-1.27$ egrep -r proplist . ./ChangeLog:wdmPrefs will support only proplist format configs. ./ChangeLog:available in proplist config. (geometry, aafonts, ./ChangeLog:resource. PLAccess specifies file inproplist format.
