Bug#296693: help with bug 296693

I don't reproduce it either. I compared the versions of packages listed

Notice that one is -12 and the others are -10. I have -12.0.1 for all
of these except xlibs which is only at -12.

Bug#298167: blender: insecure writing to /tmp/quit.blender

2005-03-05 Thread Bill Allombert
Package: blender
Version: 2.35-1.1
Severity: serious
Tags: security

Hello Masayuki,

It seems there is a trivially exploitable symlink attack in blender:

To reproduce:
1) ln -s $HOME/foo /tmp/quit.blend
2) run blender
3) Create some objects
4) quit blender
5) blender output:
Saved session recovery to /tmp/quit.blend

Blender quit
6) Now $HOME/foo has been written to.

Looking at the code:
./source/blender/blenkernel/intern/blender.c line 666 (no joke):

/* no undo state to save */
if(undobase.first==undobase.last) return;

BLI_make_file_string(/, str, U.tempdir, quit.blend);

file = open(str,O_BINARY+O_WRONLY+O_CREAT+O_TRUNC, 0666);
if(file == -1) {
printf(Unable to save %s\n, str);
return;
}

blender needs to also set O_EXCL when opening the file to prevent
the symlink attack. However it seems a better fix to save this file
in $HOME/.blender: if several users run blender on the same machine,
only the first one will benefit of the /tmp/quit.blend.

Cheers,

Bug#298169: mpg321 is setuid root and can be used to overwrite arbitrary files using -w

2005-03-05 Thread Chris Wedgwood
Package: mpg321
Version: 0.2.10.3
Severity: critical

mpg312 is installed setuid root probably to do scheduler magic or
whatever (didn't check). Anyhow, this means you can invoke it using
mpg321 -w /etc/passwd foo/mp3 or whatever.

For now I would suggest we remove the suid bit (clearly this has
issues to, but those are less sever than being able to trash arbitrary
files as non-root).

 This problem exists in almost all of the older version, so it affects
 woody, sarge and sid. Please update sylpheed package.

 See http://sylpheed.good-day.net/index.cgi.en and check its detail.

Due to recent changes in the php4 packages, your package has become
uninstallable
in sid (as of today's dinstall run, installing php4_4:4.3.10-3). We are now
building php4 with Zend Thread Safety which both changes the ABI and changes
the directory that extensions should be installed into.

Furthermore, it has come to my attention while investigating these bug reports
that your package doesn't correctly depend on phpapi-$(version), as it should.
Please see php4-pgsql for an example of how this is supposed to be done.

To build a new package, you need to do three things:

1) build-dep on php4-dev (= 4:4.3.10-3) (you can pull it from incoming to get
   a head start. The buildds already do)
2) ensure that your phpapi dependency has -zts tacked to the end of it.
   for examples on how to do so, see the debian/rules in php4-pgsql_3:4.3.10-1
3) Make sure that your extension installs to the correct directory
   (you do use `php-config --extension-dir`, don't you?)

That should be it.

Due to the simplicity and non-intrusiveness of these changes, if I don't see
uploads in the next 24 hours, I will happily NMU to fix the affected packages.

Obviously, you can't do that as non-root. This is
probably something you should to in the postinst and

PS: Maybe a debhelper script for that would be useful, I
guess you're not the only one who has to do that.

Bug#298183: lesstif1-1: Further unfixed XPM buffer overflows (CAN-2005-0605)

2005-03-05 Thread Moritz Muehlenhoff
Package: lesstif1-1
Severity: grave
Tags: security, patch
Justification: user security hole

Quoting from a recent Gentoo security advisory:
 Chris Gilbert discovered potentially exploitable buffer overflow cases
 in libXpm that weren't fixed in previous libXpm security advisories.

This has been assigned CAN-2005-0605, Woody should be affected as
well.

The attached patch has been taken from Gentoo bugtracking, as the
lesstif CVS doesn't have a commit yet. Judging from the source I assume
that this fixes only lesstif2, but not lesstif1, am I correct?

Cheers,
Moritz

Bug#297798: valgrind error

2005-03-05 Thread Justin Pryzby
Hi,

Could you expand on the Debian bug #297798 which you reported against
libc6? It seems like you mean that applications using dlerror() break
when invoked by valgrind, because valgrind dlsym() frees its return
pointer. Is that a correct interpretation?

Thanks,
Justin

yes, that is correct ... (anyway that is what the guys from libc6 support tell
me that happens).

the following statement

 AC_RaiseExc( AC_Critical, AC_For(Myself),
  AC_Private( AC_ ),
  Cannot load PEX %s of %s : %s,
  Fn, Name, dlerror() );

which basically serves as a printf

==8220==

if i interpret this correctly then dlsym (used somewhere in the write
function of valgrind), causes a free of the return string of a
dlerror() which is still needed by my application because it wants
to printf it.

if that free occurs all the time it might break other applications too.

 Thanks,
 Justin

In /usr/share/doc/smssend/copyright the license for smssend is declared to
be the GNU General Public Licence. However, it is also stated that

'If you would like to use this program in a commercial way, you must
contact the development team.'

This contradicts the definition of free software because it requires
communication with the developer before any person or organisation can
use the program.

The statement also appears to be incompatible with DFSG #5.

Bug#298052: libapache2-mod-php4: apache2/php.ini : invalid memory_limit

2005-03-05 Thread Steve Langasek
On Fri, Mar 04, 2005 at 11:52:36AM +0100, Nicolas Champenois wrote:
 Package: libapache2-mod-php4
 Version: 4:4.3.10-8
 Severity: grave
 Justification: renders package unusable

 After a dist-upgrade today a few functions of php didn't work anymore. I
 found the following entry for memory_limit in apache2/php.ini :

   memory_limit = 242424242424242424242424242424242424242424242424 of
   memory a script may consume (8MB)

 It works after commenting out this line

 Of course, this line causes a parse error when starting apache.

Are you suggesting that the line causing this parse error was somehow the
fault of the libapache2-mod-php4 package?

Bug#298233: PaX privilege elevation security bug

2005-03-05 Thread Joey Hess

PaX privilege elevation security bug

Severity:   critical

Description:unprivileged users can execute arbitrary code with
the privileges of the target in any program they or
other users can execute

it is definitely exploitable for local users,
remote exploitability depends on how much control
one can have over executable file mappings in the
target

Affected
versions: all releases since 2003 September
(when vma mirroring was introduced)

Affected
configurations: anyone having SEGMEXEC or RANDEXEC (vma mirroring)
in the kernel's .config file

Fixed versions: patches released today, see http://pax.grsecurity.net

Mitigation: echo 0 0  /proc/sys/vm/pagetable_cache

this will eliminate the obvious exploit vector only,
patching is still unavoidable

Technical details will be posted to the dailydave mailing list,
probably early next week.

This is a spectacular fuckup, it pretty much destroys what PaX has
always stood and been trusted for. For this and other reasons, PaX
will be terminated on 1st April, 2005, a fitting date... Brad Spengler
offered to take it up but if you're interested in helping as well,

I'm still seeing exactly the same problem.

I do not understand why the buildds didn't fail. From the build

Bug#297918: Patch for FTBFS

2005-03-05 Thread Esteban Manchado Velázquez
Hi all,

   Is this bug being investigated?

   It seems that the problem is libopenh323-dev no longer providing
speexcodec.h because of upstream changes starting at version 14, I think (in
particular, see the remove comment of speexcodec.h and others at
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/openh323/openh323/include/Attic/).

   AFAIK, the problem is fixed in the CVS version uploaded to experimental by
José Carlos, and the changes between openam-1.1.18 and openam-1.1.18+20041007
are very small (probably the minimum necessary for the compilation to work
again).

   So, why don't you upload it to unstable and close this bug? Any reason?

   Best regards,
