Bug#311357: Upgrade of 386 version of the 2.6.8 kernel breaks via-rhine

Sounds like a RC bug, so I'm setting it's severity to grave. I upgraded today from kernel-image-2.6.8.2-386 version 2.6.8-13 to 2.6.8-16, and my network card (D-link 10/100 DFE-530TX) that is controlled by the via-rhine module immediately quit working Too bad this bug didn't get realized when -16 was in unstable... looks like it's too late to fix this for 3.1r0. True, there was some late minute package shiffling which meant that -16 ended up going straight into sarge. Unfortunately now we have this bug. A similar thing seems to have happened with 2.4.27 and some neftilter symbols. It partly my fault (in the sense that I uploaded the packages) and partly a process issue. I do appologise for any inconvenience and I'll try and get updates together over the next few days. But we have clearly missed the boat for 3.1r0. -- Horms -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#308897: backup-manager: insecure default configuration
tags 308897 + pending thanks * Paul Brossier ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) disait : please correct me if this is over inflated severity. justification: introduces a security hole on systems where you install the packages in its default configuration, backup-manager stores a .tar.gz of /etc in /var/backups. this file is world readable, so that any local user is able to read /etc/shadow, /etc/ppp/chap-scripts and other interesting bits from it. You're absolutely right. This bug is closed in the upcoming new upstream version 0.5.8 I'll ask my sponsor to upload the new package as soon as the upstream release is ready. a solution to this problem is to have backup-manager create files with perms 0700. I chose the solution to add two new configuration keys: BM_USER and BM_GROUP. The archives repository will be chowned to $BM_USER:$BM_GROUP and will be chmoded 660 -- Alexis Sukrieh [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.sukria.net « Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum sonatur. » Whatever is said in Latin sounds profound.

Hi Horms: Thanks for acknowledging the via-rhine problem that has gotten into 3.1r0. For Debian sarge users it sounds like you have plans to fix version 2.6.8-16 which is excellent. But until that happens, and for on-going Debian testing users like me what kernel 2.6 solution do you recommend for all those who require via-rhine for their networking? For example, do you (or anybody else paying attention to this bug thread) know whether the via-rhine problems also occur for kernel-image-2.6.11 (currently in unstable)? Alan __ Alan W. Bug#312350: cdimage.debian.org: Release files on netinst/businesscard cds cause apt-config to try to get testing security sources
Package: cdimage.debian.org Severity: critical Justification: root security hole After grabing yesterday's i386 sarge businesscard CD (3.1r0) and installing, during base-config, apt-config thinks the system is testing, and tries to insert use the following sources line: # deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib Since that fails (as currently there is no testing security repository), the user is warned, and apt-setup comments out the line, and continues on with no security updates. Right now this causes any newly installed sarge installation to never grab security fixes without manual intervention, but when http://security.debian.org/dists/testing/updates eventually exists, dist-upgrades will start to try to grab testing security updates for a stable system. After a little digging, the source of the problem seems to be the Release files on the installation CD: dists/sarge/main/binary-i386/Release: Archive: testing Component: main Origin: Debian Label: Debian Architecture: i386 This manifests itself in apt-cache policy, which apt-setup uses to determine whether an installation is stable/testing/unstable. Heck, even reportbug thinks the system is testing (see below). Bug#312390: apache-ssl: apache-ssl uses 100% cpu after bogus http request
Package: apache-ssl Version: 1.3.26.1+1.48-0woody3 Severity: grave Tags: security Justification: user security hole I'm using debian woody, with the apache-ssl server, and several times over the past two months I've seen the server start using 100% cpu (per process; sometimes just one apache-ssl process is affected; sometimes as many as 12!). I'm filing this with a rather aggressive priority since it appears to be a remotely accessible DoS exploit, though no user data seems to be compromised. When this happens, I've looked at apache's access.log, and each time I've found requests that look like 213.148.18.198 - - [07/Jun/2005:01:20:55 -0700] GET / HTTP/1.1 200 7090 http://www.qptv.ru; MSIE 6.0 213.148.18.198 - - [07/Jun/2005:01:20:55 -0700] \t\x15\x10 400 - - - repeated over and over, near the time I estimate the server started sucking up 100% cpu. Always from that exact IP address (213.148.18.198, for which I can find no information), and always, a pair of requests, GET / followed by \t\x15\x10. I'd think this has been reported before, but google turns up no hits for the offending IP address. When this happens, I've tried strace'ing the apache-ssl process, and all it does is set timers and then wake up with SIGITIMER repeatedly. -- System Information Debian Release: 3.0 Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux skynet 2.4.18-686 #1 Sun Apr 14 11:32:47 EST 2002 i686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C Versions of packages apache-ssl depends on: ii apache-common 1.3.26-0woody6 Support files for all Apache webse ii dpkg1.9.21 Package maintenance system for Deb ii libc6 2.2.5-11.8 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libdb2 2:2.7.7.0-7 The Berkeley database routines (ru ii libexpat1 1.95.2-6 XML parsing C library - runtime li ii libssl0.9.6 0.9.6c-2.woody.7 SSL shared libraries ii logrotate 3.5.9-8 Log rotation utility ii mime-support3.18-1.3 MIME files 'mime.types' 'mailcap ii openssl 0.9.6c-2.woody.7 Secure Socket Layer (SSL) binary a ii perl5.6.1-8.9Larry Wall's Practical Extraction ii perl [perl5]5.6.1-8.9Larry Wall's Practical Extraction -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. -- System Information Debian Release: 3.0 Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux skynet 2.4.18-686 #1 Sun Apr 14 11:32:47 EST 2002 i686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C Versions of packages apache-ssl depends on: ii apache-common 1.3.26-0woody6 Support files for all Apache webse ii dpkg1.9.21 Package maintenance system for Deb ii libc6 2.2.5-11.8 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libdb2 2:2.7.7.0-7 The Berkeley database routines (ru ii libexpat1 1.95.2-6 XML parsing C library - runtime li ii libssl0.9.6 0.9.6c-2.woody.7 SSL shared libraries ii logrotate 3.5.9-8 Log rotation utility ii mime-support3.18-1.3 MIME files 'mime.types' 'mailcap ii openssl 0.9.6c-2.woody.7 Secure Socket Layer (SSL) binary a ii perl5.6.1-8.9Larry Wall's Practical Extraction ii perl [perl5]5.6.1-8.9Larry Wall's Practical Extraction --- Received: (at 312390-done) by bugs.debian.org; 8 Jun 2005 01:37:12 + From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tue Jun 07 18:37:12 2005 Return-path: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Received: from loki.0c3.net [69.0.240.48] by spohr.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1DfpVI-0005bZ-00; Tue, 07 Jun 2005 18:37:12 -0700 Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1] helo=mail.0c3.net ident=www-data) by loki.0c3.net with esmtp (Exim 4.34) id 1DfpUn-Yv-9s for [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Tue, 07 Jun 2005 19:36:41 -0600 Received: from 203.49.196.168 (SquirrelMail authenticated user adconrad) by mail.0c3.net with HTTP; Wed, 8 Jun 2005 11:36:41 +1000 (EST) Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] In-Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] References: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Wed, 8 Jun
Bug#310982: smbmount does not honor uid and gid options with 2.4 kernel

That being the case, it would be far better to fix this bug in the kernel instead of in smbfs. Hi Steve, I'm kind of trying to read your mind here, but are you thinking of just making a kernel that doesn't do SMB_CAP_UNIX at all? I think the best answer is for the kernel to track whether uid, gid, fmask, dmask options were specified, and if so, to ignore the permission info sent by the CAP_UNIX-enabled server. That may require changes to the ioctl interface, though; I'd have to check again whether there's any distinction between not setting the option, and setting the option to 0. -- Steve Langasek postmodern programmer signature.asc Description: Digital signature
