Bug#412194: linux-image-2.6.18-3-k7: total system freeze after max. 10 minutes uptime
Hello, Um, not exactly helpful; you're now reporting a bug at a severity that makes it a release blocker, at a point where the final kernel for etch r0 is supposed to already be uploaded and there is limited time to consult upstream about it. In the future, please report such bugs when you find them, not when you think it might be convenient for the maintainers... I know and i am honestly sorry about this. It was absolutely stupid to hope that the bug will be kind of auto-fixed, pechance by upstream.. Again, i am sorry - and i would like to help you as much as i can to find the reason for these freezes by being your 24/7 testmachine. OOI, does booting with 'nosmp' affect this hang problem for either of you? Will try this right now and give you response within 1h. In the meantime, do you think the clocksource - as described above - could be the reason? I will try to compile the kernel with either rtc or acpi_pm to see if it solves this bug. However, every successful local recompile does not inevitably mean a true solution for the problem as far as my operating experience reminds me. Thank you very much! Bug#380552: a possible medium term soloution
On Sat, Feb 24, 2007 at 03:02:55PM +0100, Bastian Blank wrote: On Sat, Feb 24, 2007 at 04:52:12AM -0800, Steve Langasek wrote: Bastian, do you have any explanation for this? coreutils now builds successfully in the test environment Manoj set up using bind mounts, but still fails on the s390 buildd. What is special/different still about the bind mount setup on the s390 buildd? It fails with the old message in my testsetup on the buildd but not on my notebook. It also succeds with a newer kernel. So this is likely a change in kernel behaviour in this case. Hmm. The oldest kernel I have around to test with is 2.6.14, and coreutils seems to build ok there on a bind-mounted tree. I guess the behavior change dates back to an earlier kernel than this. Can we trust that the buildds will be running etch kernels soon after etch is released? If so, a hand-build of the current version for s390 would be enough to let us knock this bug off the RC list, for sure. Bug#410537: build failure on alpha
Hi Steve, On Sat, Feb 24, 2007 at 04:10:03PM -0600, Steve M. Robbins wrote: I need help diagnosing this build failure. As I mentioned in my initial plea for help, last November, [http://lists.debian.org/debian-alpha/2006/11/msg00024.html], the previous version built on alpha and this current version is a tiny bug fix in a completely different region of code. Moreover, the package is building on all architectures except alpha. In my experience, this is the signature of a toolchain bug so I'd really appreciate someone with alpha knowledge to help. Other tests that use CPPUNIT_ASSERT_ASSERTION_FAIL() seem to work ok, though, so it doesn't seem to be a general problem with exception handling on alpha. Bug#409488: FTBFS: can't open /usr/lib/tcllib1.8/base64/base64.tcl for reading
tags 409488 + patch thank you This seems like a common problem in this package. Two files have the version number of tcllib hardwritten in the code, and they need to be changed on each upstream release of tcllib. tcllib could provide and maintain a /usr/lib/tcllib symlink, which would be neat, but meanwhile, instead of manually keeping it up-to-date, please consider adding the attached (dirty!) patch to debian/rules. Please note that, applying this patch, I'm able to build successfully saods9 in a pbuilder environment, in x86_32. Thank you very much for your time and attention to details. Bug#412194: linux-image-2.6.18-3-k7: total system freeze after max. 10 minutes uptime
Hello Steve, uptime with nosmp so far: 57 min. Everything runs fine and smoothly. Of course overall system load is about 5 percent (average) to 20 percent (peak) higher than usual - man, i do love and miss smp.. :D Just kidding, i can easily live happily either with nosmp or particularly with 2.6.17 for now. Maybe other affected users might agree to lower the initial severity to important? But guess who appears on stage now again (dmesg log): #Time: pit clocksource has been installed. #... #Real Time Clock Driver v1.12ac #Generic RTC Driver v1.07 RTC is back for good! This makes me so curios about the mysticals of linux time again: http://www.kernel.org/git/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/ linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=734efb467b31e56c2f9430590a9aa867ecf3eea1 After reading, re-reading and hopefully understanding i will try to find a solution, why 2.6.18-k7 decides to use Programmable Interval Timer of 1981(!) instead of our even younger and trusted friend rtc or even the fancy acpi_pm .. Once i find helpful information or even a solution, i will post it here. Thank you very much again! Bug#408277: pyftpd: installation fails: file does not exist: /usr/share/pyftpd/log_simple_config.py
The problem is that pycentral tries to install the _config.py files, which are symlinks to files in /etc/pyftpd and aren't configured yet (that is, they're suffixed .dpkg-new) pycentral can be called with a special -x option which excludes modules. The exclude pattern could be 'config.py' (since 'config' excludes real files) However this approach didn't work for me (and dh_pycentral doesn't support excluding, for some reason) If you change the direction of the symlinks, however, you can get an installable package. That means you'll get real packages under /usr/share, and symlinks in /etc. I'm not really sure if this is Policy-compliant, but you should also state those files as conffiles. The first approach (excluding the files from dh_pycentral) seemed the right one, so if someone with more experience with Python than me could check it, that'd be great. You'll find attached a brief debdiff. Thanks for your time and work. Bug#412310: Conflicting copyright claims
Package: gettext Version: 0.14.4-2 Severity: serious Several (many?) files contain these lines, as identified with find|xargs grep -2i public\ domain ./gettext-tools/examples/hello-c/autoclean.sh-# Example for use of GNU gettext. ./gettext-tools/examples/hello-c/autoclean.sh-# Copyright (C) 2003-2004 Free Software Foundation, Inc. ./gettext-tools/examples/hello-c/autoclean.sh:# This file is in the public domain. ./gettext-tools/examples/hello-c/autoclean.sh-# [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ It's not clear to me whether Debian has the right to distribute this software: if it's in the public domain, then there is no problem but OTOH if the FSF does hold the right to control who may make copies, then under what terms does Debian do so? I don't see how it can be both in the public domain and copyright FSF, and I don't see why the FSF wouldn't use the GPL (or maybe a BSD/MIT licence) in this case. I'm reporting this so that Debian may consider the question and take appropriate action, if only to record the matter's considered and that Debian may freely distribute the software. Hopefully, an official from the FSF will concur with Debian's decision. I have attempted to discuss the question with two of the authors identified in one of the documents; the address of one's no longer valid, and the other doesn't see a problem. However, he also doesn't appease my concerns. -- Cheers John -- spambait [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please do not reply off-list -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. However the patch should help since you shouldn't need to manually update the files. And also please consider asking the tcllib maintainers to provide a /usr/lib/tcllib symlink -- this way, you can use the versioned dependency and this path to finally solve the problem. Bug#370186: hal: 0.5.8.1-6.1 still exhibits problem
Package: hal Version: 0.5.8.1-6.1 Followup-For: Bug #370186 With a CD or DVD in the drive, it spins constantly. Is the fix adding documentation to /usr/share/doc/hal/README.Debian? It took me a while to find the culprit -- I spent time trying to figure out if it was a problem with acpi, hdparm, etc. I watched a movie on my laptop (HP dv9000z) and when it was done, left the DVD in the drive. The next morning my DVD is still spinning at full speed, REALLY hot, and now makes a grunch noise when I load or eject it that it did not do before. Hmm. Not even two months old. :( I may be demanding for a non-coder who is not skilled enough to submit patches, but IMHO this should be fixed in a better way. Users will not move the example script into place until after they notice the problem and after they identify hal as the problem. At that point their drive may be damaged. Non technical users may not even know about the existence of /usr/share/doc/hal/README.Debian in the first place. As an aside, when I use Nathanael Nerode's script to single out my drive with the info.product string, the DVD spins down. However there are interesting side effects. Opening a konsole window and using tab completion pauses for a sec while the DVD spins up again. After konsole (or some deeper layer in KDE) is satisfied that the DVD in the drive is still there, my tab completion finishes up. This with the working directory on the hard drive, not the DVD. Interesting. When I move the example fdi to disable checks for all CD/DVD's (since there's only one anyway) I don't get the pause issue, but the drive does spin up from time to time (1-5 minutes) to check. lshal reports my hardware as: info.product = 'DVDRAM GSA-4084N' (string) To get the manufacturer as well: info.product = 'DVDRAM GSA-4084N' (string) info.vendor = 'HL-DT-ST' (string) My kernel comes from the buildserver.net archive, to work around some nVidia nForce issues fixed in 2.6.19+. I don't think that has anything to do with it, but it does change things as the 2.6.20 kernel has moved pata drives into the scsi subsystem alongside sata drives. So my DVD is not /dev/hdc, but /dev/scd0. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.20-1-amd64 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages hal depends on: ii adduser 3.102 Add and remove users and groups ii dbus 1.0.2-1simple interprocess messaging syst ii libc6 2.3.6.ds1-11 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libdbus-1-3 1.0.2-1simple interprocess messaging syst ii libdbus-glib-1-2 0.71-3 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libexpat1 1.95.8-3.4 XML parsing C library - runtime li ii libglib2.0-0 2.12.4-2 The GLib library of C routines ii libhal-storage1 0.5.8.1-6.1Hardware Abstraction Layer - share ii libhal1 0.5.8.1-6.1Hardware Abstraction Layer - share ii libusb-0.1-4 2:0.1.12-2 userspace USB programming library ii libvolume-id0 0.103-2libvolume_id shared library ii lsb-base 3.1-23 Linux Standard Base 3.1 init scrip ii pciutils 1:2.2.4~pre4-1 Linux PCI Utilities ii udev 0.103-2/dev/ and hotplug management daemo ii usbutils 0.72-7 USB console utilities Versions of packages hal recommends: ii eject 2.1.4-2.1 ejects CDs and operates CD-Changer -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#410537: build failure on alpha
On Sun, Feb 25, 2007 at 01:14:44AM -0800, Steve Langasek wrote: Looking at the code, I gather that it's expected for this test to throw an assertion, and the problem is that it blows up on the other end. Other tests that use CPPUNIT_ASSERT_ASSERTION_FAIL() seem to work ok, though, so it doesn't seem to be a general problem with exception handling on alpha. I'll dig a bit further and see what I can see. Well, debugging this is pretty non-trivial. I've figured out that parse_lsda_header() is used for language-specific data in the objects that the exception is being generated for, but half of the activity for this happens within libgcc, for which no debugging version is available. I've tried rebuilding cppunit itself with different -g options (-gstabs, or without -g at all) to see if that would have any effect; it didn't. Still bombs out at the same place. Ah, but building with -O0 does the trick -- so there's a workaround for you if you'd care to go with that. Cheers, -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Bug#408277: pyftpd: installation fails: file does not exist: /usr/share/pyftpd/log_simple_config.py
On Sun, Feb 25, 2007 at 06:04:40AM -0400, José Parrella wrote: The problem is that pycentral tries to install the _config.py files, which are symlinks to files in /etc/pyftpd and aren't configured yet (that is, they're suffixed .dpkg-new) However, I am unable to reproduce the bug - I tried with python-central and pyftpd purged, with old pyftpd conffies left over, etc... It manifested itself only in one case, when I experimented with symlinks in /etc/pyftpd/ and left over the symlinks and reinstalled the package. I have to admit am lost at this point. pycentral can be called with a special -x option which excludes modules. I'm not really sure if this is Policy-compliant, but you should also state those files as conffiles. that is contrary to the Policy, section 10.7.2: Any configuration files created or used by your package must reside in /etc If your package creates or uses configuration files outside of /etc, and it is not feasible to modify the package to use /etc directly, put the files in /etc and create symbolic links to those files from the location that the package requires The first approach (excluding the files from dh_pycentral) seemed the right one, so if someone with more experience with Python than me could check it, that'd be great. You'll find attached a brief debdiff. Thanks for your time and work. What if I made pyftpd pre-depend on python-central? I think it might help. -- --- | Radovan Garabík http://kassiopeia.juls.savba.sk/~garabik/ | | __..--^^^--..__garabik @ kassiopeia.juls.savba.sk | --- Antivirus alert: file .signature infected by signature virus. Bug#412054: [Strigi-devel] segfault running strigidaemon 0.3.11 on debian
2007/2/23, CSights [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hi Jon, I was able to find that the daemon segfaults on kontact.desktop file. I discovered which file was causing a segfault by running strigi-daemon under gdb, then when there was a segfault I checked lsof to find which file strigi-daemon had opened. Trying to run strigi-daemon again after moving kontact.desktop out of the search path, it again segfaults on another .desktop file. Adding *.desktop to the exclude filter, strigi-daemon segfaults, this time on Adobe Acrobat 4.0.xpm. (Do you want this file?) Adding *.xpm to the exclude filter, strigi-daemon segfaults on a .jpg file. All of these files I can get the metainfo on (right-click, properties, meta info). Is this also a kfile function? I'm beginning to think strigi simply segfaults on the first file it encounters, and is probably a Debian specific problem. A bug has been opened already on the debian bug tracker. If you have any other input let me/us know: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?archive=nobug=412054 Hi C. It sounds like it crashes on the first file it sees! Does it actually index any file properly? Cheers, Jos Thanks, C. On Friday 23 February 2007 00:41, Jos van den Oever wrote: Hi C., Thanks for you report. Do you have an idea on what file it crashes? Bug#411027: some sort of user error
severity 411027 serious thanks Hi, if you installed the wiki as described with kwiki -new cgi-bin/my-kwiki one gets the error submitted above. Now if you run kwiki -update inside the wiki instance, the error disappears. It seems that some files are not generated properly. Also the content of the plugin directory changed. But general that package seems to be in a quite bad shape, with empty man-pages and VERY much documentation. So man-pages saying: | DESCRIPTION |See installed kwiki pages for more information. | are very helpful! I would recommend to not distribute that package in our next stable release. Bug#410537: build failure on alpha
Hi Steve, Thanks hugely for looking into this. Other tests that use CPPUNIT_ASSERT_ASSERTION_FAIL() seem to work ok, though, so it doesn't seem to be a general problem with exception handling on alpha. Have you actually seen a test using CPPUNIT_ASSERT_ASSERTION_FAIL() work ok? In the buildd logs, the only tests that successfully complete (src/cppunit/t_link, src/DllPlugInTester/DllPlugInTesterTest, and examples/hierarchy) do *not* use CPPUNIT_ASSERT_ASSERTION_FAIL. And the next test, examples/cppunittest/cppunittestmain, blows up at the first usage of CPPUNIT_ASSERT_ASSERTION_FAIL. Just in case you were mistaken about seeing CPPUNIT_ASSERT_ASSERTION_FAIL work correctly, I'm attaching a small test case to exercise it. If it fails to work with -O2, but does work with -O0, perhaps the assembly might clue us in on what is being optimized away. Thanks! I'll take that if no better solution can be found. -Steve #include cppunit/extensions/HelperMacros.h #include cppunit/CompilerOutputter.h #include cppunit/TestResult.h #include cppunit/TestResultCollector.h #include cppunit/TestRunner.h #include cppunit/TextTestProgressListener.h #include cppunit/BriefTestProgressListener.h #include cppunit/XmlOutputter.h #include cppunit/extensions/TestFactoryRegistry.h #include stdexcept #include fstream class MyTester : public CppUnit::TestFixture { CPPUNIT_TEST_SUITE( MyTester ); CPPUNIT_TEST( myTest ); CPPUNIT_TEST_SUITE_END(); public: void myTest() { CPPUNIT_ASSERT_ASSERTION_FAIL( CPPUNIT_ASSERT_EQUAL( 0, 1 ) ); } }; int main( int argc, char* argv[] ) { CPPUNIT_NS::TestResultCollector result; CPPUNIT_NS::BriefTestProgressListener progress; CPPUNIT_NS::TestResult controller; controller.addListener( result ); controller.addListener( progress ); CPPUNIT_NS::TestRunner runner; runner.addTest( MyTester::suite() ); try { runner.run( controller ); // Print test in a compiler compatible format. Yes, I looked for other occurrences of this in the code and tested them directly, invoking the individual tests by name from cppunittestmain. That test case works fine when built with -O2, regardless of the options used for building cppunit. I.e., even when building cppunit itself with -O2 (and getting the testsuite failure), this test case still passes. Time allowing, I'll look into getting a minimal test case working back from the one that's known to fail. -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Bug#412045: Problem when Installing mysql-server-5.0
Hi, My problem was due to lack of space in /var/log/ Please close this case. Thank you Hi On 2007-02-23 John Halton wrote: I had a similar issue a few months ago with the mysql package being in a very bad inconsistent state, and with no apparent way of either uninstalling or fixing the package. If you do a Google search for 'mysql debian Package is in a very bad inconsistent state' you will find a number of others whom this has affected. The solution that worked for me is the one found in the first comment here - www.debianhelp.org/node/1962 - of setting the RUNLEVEL initialisation variable at start-up. I mention this in case it helps track down/reproduce the problem. It seems the problem may also be related to splashy, unless I have misunderstood what the commenter in that thread is saying. The RUNLEVEL bug was in the lsb-base package which just happened to had an update at the same time as my mysql package. It has been fixed in the meantime. System Administrator have you seen the same message? If so, first upgrade the lsb-base package and then try again with mysql. Please tell me if I can close this bug report if it works. bye, -christian-

Bug#412142: Upgrade from sarge to etch makes pipermail archives stop working

We migrated the lists by simply copying all the data in /var/lib/mailman/ over. We ended up regenerating the archives of the broken lists with a /var/lib/mailman/bin/arch --wipe listname. Well, if you could get me a copy of the /var/lib/mailman/ data of a list where the problem was showing up _before_ the arch --wipe, it would help me test a tentative fix. I'm sending over a tar of the /var/lib/mailman/archives/private/listname/ folder from before the arch --wipe (under separate cover). Is this all you need, or are there other mailman files you'd like a copy of? Note how in the archive index by thread for February 2007 ends on the 11th. The date index also ends on the 11th except for one message from the 17th, which is the day that this snapshot of the archives was taken. We speculate that in the date archive, it just repeatedly overwrote the last message link with the newest message to arrive, whereas the thread update simply failed completely. -- eefi -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. The correct check would be: if (getlogin_r(login, 255)) strcpy(login, unknown); Also, I wonder at some of the gratuitous uses of 'static' in this code. 'static' for a variable declared within a function doesn't /limit/ the scope of the variable as it does outside, it /expands/ the scope of the variable causing its value to be preserved across invocations of the function. That's not warranted here, none of these variables are used for values that are at all persistent. Anyway, the bug is still RC in nature.
