Bug#470406: [Debian-med-packaging] Bug#470406: Bug#470406: Please remove vanity suggests on popularity-contest
On Tue, 11 Mar 2008, Charles Plessy wrote: Le Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 12:26:57AM +0100, Christoph Berg a écrit : it appears to me that autodock and autogrid's Suggests on popularity-contest merely serve the purpose of pimping that package's popcon scores. Please remove the Suggests. Indeed, the rationale is explained by Steffen in README.Debian: ... Besides the explanation given above I don't think that you can really pimp a packages popcon scores that way. Popcon decides between packages that are just installed and packages which content was really used by a user of the system. So if some instances of popcon are installed on boxes of users which installed it because of the suggests inside popcon nothing really happens. It has just a minor influence on those boxes where users really use auto* and would not have installed popcon if there would not be the Suggests. Comparing the number of all popcon users to those view users that fit this criterium the influence might be smaller than a small epsilon. On the other hand I personally do not like the Suggest because it is just adding a dependency relation to a package that does not add any value to the functionality of the package itself. The package would work perfectly if you would replace the Suggests by a Conflicts. So this is general missuse of Suggests and I would like it to be removed for this reason - even if I think I have understand the problem which is explained in README.Debian. As a compromise I would be open for a discussion to make med-config Suggests/Recommends popcon. This would lead to the effect that popcon will be potentially installed on those machines that install auto* via the med-bio package dependencies. The rationale behind this popcon suggests would be that we get some information about the real usage of our Dependencies of the meta packages and might be able to adjust the Recommends / Suggests ratio according to these data. What do you think about this? Kind regards Andreas. -- http://fam-tille.de

Bug#470327: [Pkg-octave-devel] Bug#470327: problem in fltk-config
package octplot reassign 470327 fltk1.1 found 1.1.8~rc1-2 thanks Hi Aaron, fltk-config outputs several lines instead of one when called as $ fltk-config --use-gl --libs which makes it difficult to use the output in further commands. The problem is in the if part, starting at line 319. This change happened in upstream Subversion revision 5985, which was a fix for STR #1799. I don't know fltk's upstream, so can you please clarify if this change will stay? I'll then try to come up with a work-around, although I think outputting everything on one line is preferred. See below for the corresponding FTBFS bug report for octplog. Am Montag, den 10.03.2008, 12:04 -0700 schrieb Larry Doolittle: The origin of the problem is a change (between fltk1.1-1.1.7 and fltk1.1-1.1.8~rc1) in the output of fltk-config. With libfltk1.1{,-dev} version 1.1.7-7 installed, I get $ fltk-config --use-gl --libs /usr/lib/libfltk.a /usr/lib/libfltk_gl.a $ but with revision 1.1.8~rc1-2 I get $ fltk-config --use-gl --libs /usr/lib/libfltk.a /usr/lib/libfltk_gl.a $ The octplot configure script gets tripped up by the extra linefeed, so the resulting Makefile has LIBS = /usr/lib/libfltk.a /usr/lib/libfltk_gl.a -lfltk_gl -lfltk -lGLU -lGL -lm -lfreetype -lz instead of LIBS = /usr/lib/libfltk.a /usr/lib/libfltk_gl.a -lfltk_gl -lfltk -lGLU -lGL -lm -lfreetype -lz I humbly suggest reassigning to package fltk1.1, Doing so now, thanks for the analysis. although I could also make an argument that autoconf should deal with this case. There's not really anything to fix in octplot, which just does LIBS=$LIBS `$FLTK_CONFIG $fltkconf_args --use-gl --libs` in configure.ac. There is actually an error in imapproxy's default config file -- imapproxy tries to bind to and listen to the same address with the config file shipped. This will be fixed by changing the default listen_port to another value for the cases where the user chooses localhost as the server. This issue is complicated to classify, since this behaviour is a result of recent changes in code upstream -- previously, it would start without complaining even if it couldn't bind. This behaviour is probably more sane. Regards, J.L. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#406986: Upgrade B2evolution 0.9.2 to 1.10.2
Hi Arnaud, On 10/03/2008, Arnaud Guiton [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Xavier wrote: Hi all, Hi! Currently, two upstream versions are available: - 1.10.3 dated from 2007-11-01 and which is a stable version. - 2.4.0 dated from 2008-01-23 and which is a RC4 version. Which version do you think is the best ? If there are also numerous incompatibilities between the 1.n and the 2.n branches for, say, the database structures, it would be better to package directly the 2.4 version. This would avoid doing two tricky upgrades: 0.9 - and 1.10 now and 1.10 - 2.4 in a few months. But if this 2.4 is still not stable, then there are no choice but to package the 1.10 version. Just my 2 cents... Thanks for being back and taking care of the package, by the way! The 2.4 version of b2evolution is considered as stable by the upstream author, even if it is currently tagged as RC2 ;-) I agree with you, let's work with this new version, so that we have to do the hard work only once... I'm going to work on it this week and let you know when I have something which can be tested... By the way, who is ready to test the new package before uploading it? Cheers, Xavier

Bug#470453: less: Does not show contents of plain text files with .deb or .udeb extention
Package: less Version: 418-1 Severity: serious Justification: Unsuitable for release because of unexpected behavior $ echo This is a plain text file test.deb $ less test.deb test.deb: *** Contents: test.deb (END) Doing the same on an Etch system does show the contents correctly: $ echo This is a plain text file test.deb $ less test.deb This is a plain text file test.deb (END) Having the ability to show the contents of a Debian package is nice, but IMO the current implementation is seriously broken for the following reasons: - apparently it assumes that any file with the extention .deb or .udeb is a Debian package file, which is the Windows way of doing things; the Linux (and only correct) way of determining the file type is by checking the magic numbers in a file - the current behavior violates the rule of least surprise: if I use less on a Debian package and get garbled output, that's not strange; however, if I use less on a plain text file and I only get '*** Contents:', it leads to the assumption that the file is broken I saw this issue while working with the experimental busybox source package, which has three configuration files: config.deb, config.udeb and config.static (IMO a sensible naming scheme). The fact that I did not see the contents of the first two confused me a lot and eventually cost a few hours of both my time and of others [1]. Please revert this feature until it can be implemented correctly to checks the actual file type. If you have time perhaps you might want to look at this. If you can put together a fix I can make sure the fix finds its way into debian. Bug#470327: [Pkg-octave-devel] Bug#470327: Bug#470327: problem in fltk-config
Oops; thanks for the report. I'll fix fltk-config as time permits (likely tonight @-0400); however, I'd argue that octplot is misusing it anyway, as --libs is primarily intended to give makefile dependencies (foo: foo.o `fltk-config --libs`). Instead, please use --ldflags, or, in the unlikely case that you actually mean to link fltk statically, --ldstaticflags. -- Aaron M. Thanks for testing. I guess what you'd expect is: 1) be asked whether to enable firebird server at startup 2) do no try to set sysdba password (or even ask for it) when firebird server is not enabled Does this look satisfactory? ok it asked me when i installed but it failed to start see the first error I traced the source of the error. It exisits, it is grave. I am very surprised that no one found it almost three months. The reason for the failure is an excessive cleanup after abandoning the idea of supportingmultiple firebird vesions being installed at the same time. the postinst script never asks if you want to enable the server, but tries to change sysdba's password. As the server is not started, it fails. The fix is to ask for, and attempt to change the password only the server is enabled and only after it has been started. I'll produce fixed packages soon and present them for testing. Bug#470512: ntfsprogs: unclean unmount during normal shutdown
Package: ntfsprogs Version: 2.0.0-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable The problem is that the process ntfsmount /dev/usb-wdc-320gb1 /media/teras which is running during the time that you have the drive mounted, is being killed during shutdown before the filesystem is unmounted. Bug#470082: Regarding your fonts' Licenses
Hi! First of all, thanks for making all those free fonts. I'm contacting you because one of your fonts (Stan's hand) got included in a free game (Help Hannah's Horse [0]) which then got included in Debian GNU/Linux distribution [1], for which I work (voluntarily, no money involved). Your fonts are free of charge, but unfortunately are not free in the Debian sense of freedom [2]. For them to be Debian free, people that have access to them need to be able to do whatever they want with them (this includes selling or modifying them), as long as your copyright notice is retained. You can still ask people to pay you and tell you of their use of the font, so long as it's not a compulsory obligation. A few changes to the way your license is worded would allow for the font to be considered free: Instead of Link to my site and send me an email if you use it, it would be better if it said If possible, I'd like for you to link to my site and send me an email if you use it,. Instead of If you use it to make some money, you should definitely send me some, you could say If you use it to make some money, it would be nice if you sent me some,. The Do not include in CD-ROM's or other media for sale without my permission. Not nice Very Bad Karma! Do not re-mix or otherwise bastardize my babies either! is the most conflictive... For the font to be free in the Debian sense, the whole paragraph would need to be erased or completely changed :-\. In case you are interested, there's a free font license that you could use for your fonts called OFL [3] [4]. Bug#470082: Fwd: Regarding your fonts' Licenses
Hi! First of all, thanks for making all those free fonts. I'm contacting you because one of your fonts (Fat Free Solid) got included in a free game (Help Hannah's Horse [0]) which then got included in Debian GNU/Linux distribution [1], for which I work (voluntarily, no money involved). Your fonts are free of charge, but unfortunately are not free in the Debian sense of freedom [2]. You can still ask people to pay you and tell you of their use of the font, so long as it's not a compulsory obligation. Please, consider changing the way your license is worded, so that this font can still be shipped in Debian. Bug#470082: Regarding fonts in Hannah
Hi! Recently it has been brought to my attention that Hannah is using 2 non-free fonts [1] [2] (these are font.ttf and subgamefont.ttf). They are free of charge, but aren't free like the GPL. One requires payment if used comercially, the other requiers email sending, web linking, etc. As you might see in the bug reports, I have already mailed the upstream authors of the fonts, asking them if they can re-license with a more free license, that follows Debian's guidelines [3]. However, I don't have much hope in the authors wanting to re-license their fonts, so I think it might be better if you just changed the fonts for other similar *free* fonts. If you decide not to, then I'll have to remove them and include other fonts specifically for the Debian package, because the package as it currently is cannot be distributed by Debian. :( [1]: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=470079 [2]: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=470082 [3]: http://www.debian.org/social_contract#guidelines -- Besos, Marga -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
