On an upgrade you can savely assume that the gitosis user either still
exists, or the admin decided to modify it. Creating the user again and
especially chowning existing files is a security issue.

Hello,

gitosis’s postinst script creates the gitosis user, with $HOME located
in /var/cache/gitosis ; the Git repositories hosted by gitosis will
then be stored in this directory, along with the
gitosis configuration.

According to the FHS[1], « /var/cache is intended for cached data from
applications. Such data is locally generated as a result of
time-consuming I/O or calculation. The application must be able to
regenerate or restore the data. Unlike /var/spool, the cached files
can be deleted without data loss. »

IMHO, neither the hosted repositories nor the gitosis config match
this definition.

Bug#488142: I need help with this

2008-07-20 Thread Enrico Zini
Hello,

the cause of the FTBFS is just that missing _Buffy.so symlink in the
python directory.

What is happening is that the .so python module is created with libtool.
libtool creates the python .so module in .lib/ but the tests won't find
it there: with a symlink, the tests are happy.

The symlink is shipped with the package itself. For some reason, it
disappears in the buildds, but NOT in my system, NOR in my sid chroots.

One potential fix is to edit the makefile (python/Makefile.am) so that
it creates the symlink if it's missing; but since I can't reproduce it,
I cannot test it.

Any chance any of you can give it a try? (if you can reproduce the
FTBFS, at least).

Ciao,

Enrico

Bug#491527: sysv-rc: update-rc.d with defaults performs wrong actions

2008-07-20 Thread Jonathan Steinert
Subject: sysv-rc: update-rc.d with defaults performs wrong actions
Package: sysv-rc
Version: 2.86.ds1-59
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

When calling:

# update-rc.d -f foo defaults 40 16

   /etc/rc0.d/K16foo - ../init.d/foo

   /etc/rc6.d/K16foo - ../init.d/foo
   /etc/rc40.d/S40foo - ../init.d/foo
update-rc.d: symlink: No such file or directory

rc40.d is the wrong directory (And thankfully doesn't exist) but this means
that packages using the 'defaults' call to set up their rc.d symlinks will be
broken on install.

This is fixed in 1-60, but not noted in the changelog.

please get 1-60 or a ported fix into lenny ASAP.

I've tried it with ubuntu intrepid pbuilder. There is also a bug

The current Ubuntu Intrepid also has gcc 4.3.

This is fixed in 1-60, but not noted in the changelog.

I believe it is mentioned, with this comment:

  * Drop support for experimental flag file /etc/update-rc.d-lsbparse.
People should use insserv if they want the boot system sequencing
to use the LSB headers. Patch from Kel Modderman. This fixes
typo in update-rc.d, making sure it ignore the LSB Default-Start
header.

The fact that your script get the wrong symlinks make me suspect it
got wrong LSB header in the init.d script. The bug would only affect
script with incorrect information.

I have marked this bug critical because and 1-59 is frozen in lenny
currently, please get 1-60 or a ported fix into lenny ASAP.

I intend to try to get -60 into Lenny as soon as possible.

place to downgrade a bug based on an unclear bit of the rc policy) and
openjdk slots in just before the freeze (btw is there any actual date
set for that or is it just sometime next week

I don't see any reason we should downgrade an FTBFS bug on most
architectures.

*The rc bug is fixed and the release team makes a freeze exception or an
urgent hint to get openjdk in before the freeze

Fixing the bug looks indeed like the best option.

 *the freeze is delayed

Not an option currently...

Cheers

Luk

severity 491362 important
thanks

The failure to build do not seem to affect all architectures. The
package is available on amd64, i386 and sparc. As it never was built
on the architectures where it failed to build, I believe this the
correct severity for this build issue is important.

0.11.1 is being tested for this bug - by making a release to Emdebian so
that the fixed version can be run through the autobuilder.

0.12.0 will be uploaded to Debian once testing of 0.11.1 is successful.

Bug#491536: iceweasel: Impossible to get past click through license dialog

2008-07-20 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: iceweasel
Severity: grave
Version: 3.0~rc2-2
User: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Usertag: debian-edu

In a fresh Lenny installation, I am unable to start iceweasel because
the click through license dialog box do not respond on the [OK] button
when I choose 'I accept the term of the License Agreement'. This make
iceweasel completely unusable. I suspect this only affect new users.
Because of this, I set the severity to grave.

Bug#491537: vmware-package: non-distributable files ?!?

2008-07-20 Thread Francesco Poli
Package: vmware-package
Version: 0.22
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.3

Hi!

I've just read the debian/copyright file of vmware-package.
It states, in part:

| This package may contain non-distributable files copyrighted by
| VMware, Inc.
| Such files may be subject to the proprietary VMware EULA.

Huh?!?
This package may include undistributable files, yet the Debian
Project is distributing them anyway?!?

Does the Debian Project has some special permission to distribute
those files?
If this is the case, then it should be clarified in the debian/copyright
file; moreover, the package should be moved to non-free, since a
Debian-specific permission to distribute fails DFSG#8 and contrib
packages must comply with the DFSG (Policy 2.2.2).

If, on the other hand, no special permission was granted to the
Debian Project to distribute those files, then I think the
Debian Project should stop distributing them immediately,
since continuing to do so seems to be a copyright violation!

If the situation is different from the above two cases, then I
think it's definitely unclear: please explain.

Thanks in advance.

I intend to fix the bug you've reported about licenses but I'm not able to get

source because was already removed.

I dedicated time to keep this package up-to-date and I don't really want it off
the release.

Please, let me know how do I get the latest source and I'll fix thw bug and
upload the new version ASAP.

Thank you for your time and dedication.

Cheers.

Version: 6b10dfsg-2
Severity: serious

the current packages fail to build using the openjdk-6 in the archive, or using
the ecj based bootstrap. Didn't find the reason yet. The symptom is a failure
running the mauve tests (but the jtreg harness tests fail as well).

Well, there is no actual reason to run it, these days, so I don't want

Here is a shorter patch. CTAN, if you want to install this in
  CTAN/fonts/wsuipa/mf/compilefonts, feel free. If you don't, I don't
mind that either. TL never runs it anyway and never will.

Done. Thanks.

pixbros 100% repeatably crashes with a segfault upon level completion. I've
tracked this down (with a local debuggable fenix build) to this:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

  #4 0x00405873 in main (argc=3, argv=0x7fffa91d07d8) at main.c:406

The segfault is caused by a pointer into hyperspace; the attached patch fixes
it by ensuring that the memory is initialised.

Bug#491354: Handling of RC licensing bugs in TeXLive

2008-07-20 Thread Frank Küster
Dear release team,

I kindly request your advice on handling three RC bugs in TeXLive
packages, and maybe ask for a lenny-ignore tag. Although all bug
numbers look quite recent, the first two are actually very old. But
these issues were originally reported against existing bugs in teTeX
which collected all license issues known at this time, and have now been
separated.

#477060, amslatex license; Source Package: texlive-base

Details of problems: The license of the AMSLaTeX package (Copyright by
the American Mathematical Society, AMS) is phrased badly and is
literally non-free. Plus, individual files have a different
license header in the file.

What's happened so far:

   - Barbara Beeton at AMS has been contacted in April 2006 and
answered promptly. A discussion about License details followed,
only the parts relevant for AMSLaTeX are in the bug report. She
said they'd sort this out and use a DFSG-free license, but that
this might take long, because the people doing the work aren't
the ones to decide (and I guess the AMS management needed to
 ask a lawyer, too).

   - Following this answer, the bug report which originally
contained this conversation, #356853, got an etch-ignore tag.

   - Nothing happened (no upload of AMSLaTeX to CTAN, in particular)

   - In 2007, Barbara Beeton said they were working on it, and how
they planned to change things (but referring only to a part of
 the problem)

   - In particular, she said that the license of the
individual files, as well as some related package, amsrefs, to
the LPPL. This is planned for the 2008 update of AMS macros

   - In April this year, the discussion came up again on the
Upstream (TeXLive) list, and Barbara Beeton answered again (see
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=477060#45),
now saying that the license of AMSLaTeX itself is going to be
sorted out in a subsequent step. The timeline is

,
| our hope is that, barring disasters, the update
| of ams-latex -- all of it -- will be ready by
| the end of the calendar year. (but unfortunately,
| we must allow for disasters; this past year has [...]
`

I am aware that foo-ignore tags are usually granted for licensing issues
when it upstream has assured to be willing to clarify the situation in a
DFSG-free manner, *and* it can be expected that this is going to happen
in a timely manner. And that timely manner usually does not mean
longer than a Debian stable lifetime. While the first is completely true
here, the update has already taken very long, and there is now no chance
to get the planned update into lenny. I can personally understand well
why Upstream (AMS) has not been able to make an upload - their business
is not software development, but support for american mathematicians,
and I am sure that they *will* eventualy do it. But I would also accept
if the release team no longer feels confident that anything is going to
happen.

Anyway, I kindly request considering a lenny-ignore tag for this bug.

#483217, files by Donald Arseneau; Source Package: texlive-base

This has also first been reported in #356853.

Details of the problem: Donald Arseneau is a long-time contributor to
the TeX community. In the old days he used no license at all, or very
different license texts, many of which are legally unclear (This is
free, unencumbered, unsupported software.), for his works. But the
general believe in the community is that he intends his stuff to be free
software. Just he doesn't care for legalese, and isn't easy to convince
to make any change.

Lately, I asked about this on the Upstream (TeXLive) mailing list, and
got an answer in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=356853#260 with contact
data and a discouraging comment about getting an answer from him about
licensing stuff. Still, I would prefer to give it a try and convice him
before simply removing the files.

However, it is clear that no one among the Debian TeX Team will have
time to do this in the next couple of weeks, in other words in a
timeframe usefull for the lenny release.

The reasons: Many contributors to the team usually just leave licensing
questions to Norbert and me. Norbert is on VAC for I think 5 more weeks,
and I have just become father of a sweet son and am going to start my
paid work again tomorrow. I am sure this will leave me no time to
concentrate on a conversation with someone who's a bit problematic, in
particular not to follow up on answers soon. And IMO not allowing things
to be forgotten is very important when discussing licensing things with
reluctant upstreams.

Thus, our personal timeline would be contact him in autumn, give the
attempt two or three weeks, and remove if nothing can be gained. Again,
this doesn't fit the lenny release timeline.

It seems sun-java6-jre cannot be installed on etch-backports/amd64,
because sun-java6-jre and sun-java6-bin depend on each other, but with
different version numbers.

Presumably sun-java6-* packages have been all rebuilt for i386, thus
requiring newer versions of each other, but not so for amd64.

  Hello,

The problem you have reported on sun-java6-jre is a problem with the
versions available on backports.org, which is not officially part of
debian. I'm therefore closing the debian bug. I'm not familiar to the
way to report bugs for backports.org, but my guess is that you should
mention the problem there:

Bug#490119: vegastrike not starting: detailed story

2008-07-20 Thread Vincent Fourmond

  Hello,

I'm sorry about the bug you found in vegastrike. The problem is that
we really need to have both vegastrike and vegastrike-data at version
0.5 to fix that. Unfortunately, the game data for vegastrike has grown
very large, around 500MB, which means 1GB of disk usage for the mirrors.
The comment of the FTP masters on the subject is that this is way too
big and not suitable for main. Unless someone steps out (quickly) and
produces a 'light' version of the data for 0.5, we will have to remove
vegastrike from lenny...

  Regards,

Vincent, sorry for that

Bug#491543: fix outline

2008-07-20 Thread Bastian Blank
Hi

I digged a little into and this is the old uname -m-decease.

Outlines of the fix:
- Remove uname -m usage from configure, use the host_* variables always.
- Export this values somehow, use them in jprt.config and other
makefiles in the tree. How is this done for the gcc value?
- Call configure with appropriate --build (and --host in case of cross
  building) arguments from debian/rules.

Right, but since these fonts use the cm metafont program I assume they

They can, since cm is in the public domain, not LPPL or GPL or similar.

Hi,
reportbug provides a way to control how bugs are reported on a
particular package, by adding files in /usr/share/bug/$package. However
reportbug-ng doesn't seem to use that information, which means that bugs
reported with it lack very important information. In particular,
without the output of /usr/share/bug/$package/script, many reports are
useless.

Thanks,
Julien

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
reportbug has a nice system whereby package maintainers can include a file in
their package that has instructions for users to read before filing a bug on
their package. It'd be nice if r-ng could display these instructions before
opening the e-mail window.

Package: reportbug-ng
Version: 0.2007.04.27
Severity: normal

Hi,
reportbug provides a way to control how bugs are reported on a
particular package, by adding files in /usr/share/bug/$package. However
reportbug-ng doesn't seem to use that information, which means that bugs
reported with it lack very important information. In particular,
without the output of /usr/share/bug/$package/script, many reports are
useless.

Thanks,
Julien

Hi,

thanks for the hint! I've looked through the bugs again and found the
following:

(1) #422085 (and the lengthly discussion) is particularly about the
scripts. The release team decided that this issue is serious
(2) #434212 is about the scripts and the other files
(3) #417256 is about the presubj

(1) I think with supplying the information of the script I've fixed the
problem which caused the bug to be serious in the opinion of the release
team. I treat this as the script-bug and keep it closed.

(2) Is partially fixed by sending the output of script but not quite
since the other files are still ignored.

(3) Not fixed yet.

I'll unmerge (1), (2) and (3) and reopen and downgrade the latter two to
normal.

Cheers,

Bastian

Bug#469896: tagging 469896

2008-07-20 Thread Luca Capello
Hi Frank!

I don't think that untagging it without prior discussion with the
maintainer is fair.

The fix is quite simple and has been applied, yes, more than two months
ago [1]. However, once installed, the package cannot be loaded through
ASDF [2] and this happens independently of this fix.

With my Common Lisp maintainer hat on, since cl-geodesics is not really
at the top of my priority list [3], I haven't had any time to
investigate how to solve the other bug, thus this fix is marked as
pending for more than two months. I don't see the point in solving an
RC bug is the package isn't usable at all.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

Why don't you just fix the bugs instead of trying to play with the bts.

I never programmed in python before - and I still don't like it, but in around
10 minutes, I was able to create a patch for the presubj part. (Se attached)
As you seem to be quite able to write stuff in python, it should have been even
faster for you.

Hi,
reportbug provides a way to control how bugs are reported on a
particular package, by adding files in /usr/share/bug/$package. However
reportbug-ng doesn't seem to use that information, which means that bugs
reported with it lack very important information. In particular,
without the output of /usr/share/bug/$package/script, many reports are
useless.

Thanks,
Julien

That's because your solution isn't quite adequate. Before I can fix this
problem, I have to implement a settings window where (amongst other
options) the user can disable popups like this. The popups would be
enabled by default of course but, but not mandatory.

Also please have a look at the mail I sent a few hours ago, where I
explain why I 'played' with the bts. I've closed this particular one
since this is the one which was mainly about the script issue, which I
think was considered serious by the release team. Since this issue is

Bug#491594: iceweasel: crashes on almost every page, and does not start without ~/.firefox

2008-07-20 Thread Sebastian Reichelt
Package: iceweasel
Version: 3.0~rc2-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Since I upgraded to iceweasel 3, I'm no longer able to do anything useful with
it. It segfaults on most pages I try to open, including www.google.com. I tried
running it in safe mode, to no avail. Even with iceweasel-dbg, I only get the
following gdb output when I enter a URL:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
[Switching to Thread 0xb7d0f6c0 (LWP 3570)]
0xb6cdb133 in ?? () from /usr/lib/libpangoft2-1.0.so.0

It also crashes when I open the Main or Applications tab in the
preferences, but at least I get a backtrace (see attachment -- I cancelled the
backtrace generation after the 100th frame, because it continues like that for
more than 5000 frames).

What's worse, when I move ~/.firefox to ~/.firefox-old, iceweasel refuses to
start at all. Instead, I get the following message:

Firefox is already running, but not responding. To open a new window, you must
first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.

However, there is neither a firefox-related process running, nor does
restarting the system help. However, moving the ~/.firefox directory back to
its place reverts it to the old behavior.

I filed the bug as grave because it renders the package unusable for me, and
because I'm sure it's not a hardware problem. After all, iceweasel 2 worked
fine. If you need more information about my system, please tell me.

Bug#491130: munin: Munin fails to install

2008-07-20 Thread Holger Levsen
Hi,

On Saturday 19 July 2008 20:26, Petter Reinholdtsen wrote:
I was tipsed about #491107, which I believe is the source of this
 problem.

No. It just makes this problem more obvious :)

from debian/changelog

  * Install munin-node gracefully (ie. inside a chroot, where port 4949 is
bound to another munin-node already) : munin-node.postinst: don't exit
postinst with error if just munin-node-configure fails. debian/rules: use
dh_installinit with --error-handler=true. (Closes: #491130)

I recommend setting this bug as blocked by the other bug, or
 reassign it.

They are not really related, munin(-node) should configure and install just
fine if /proc or /dev/null is not available.

regards,
Holger

   Hi Timo,
I agree this needs to be fixed. Can you provide any help in
debugging this? For example which screensaver did you use?

I just typed xlock, which used random screensavers. It takes about
20-60 minutes to crash, but I guess I could try leaving xlock running in
gdb and see if backtrace shows the screensaver.

 This would be nice.

I finally remembered to run it over night, but looks like it doesn't
crash anymore. I guess a newer version fixed that one.
