Bug#492683: checkinstall: messes up man pages when doing "Compressing man pages"

2008-07-27 Thread LUK ShunTim
Package: checkinstall
Version: 1.6.1-8
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss

I guess this is result of filesystem translation not working properly with the
newer kernels as reported previously.

When checkinstall is doing "Compressing man pages", it messes up the real man
pages in /usr/share/man etc by re-compressing all man pages files (harmless,
though) and rendering symbolic links to just an invalid .gz link. :-( Note:
TRANSLATE=0 set and checkinstall invoked with root previlege.

A possible work around is to disable compressing man pages by setting
COMPRESS_MAN=0. But it appears that files left by checkinstall in
/usr/share/man etc are not cleaned up for the case when INSTALL=0 is set.

Regards,
ST

Hi!

Your package build-depends on an unavailable package (libdvdread3-dev).

Fix is simple (replace libdvdread3-dev by libdvdread-dev):

Package: azureus
Version: 2.5.0.0+0-1
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.2.1

The package seems to require Sun Java as it stated in README.txt. I gave
up with trying to run it on free VM's available in Debian etch.

In addition, the azureus wrapper expects java in the path, which is
available only with Sun Java package installed.

I believe, the package should be moved out from main with dependencies
corrected unless it works with free VM's in lenny witch is unlikely.

Hi,

During a rebuild of all packages in sid, your package failed to build on i386.

This rebuild was done with gcc 4.3 instead of gcc 4.2, because gcc 4.3 is now
the default on most architectures (even if it's not the case on i386 yet).
Feel free to downgrade this bug to 'important' if your package is only built
on i386, and this bug is specific to gcc 4.3 (i.e the package builds fine with
gcc 4.2).

Comments/Problems:

The installer couldn't mount its own partition - it seem that mount/the kernel
now by default tries to use iocharset=utf8 by default, but this charset isn't
available in the installer.
By changing iso-scan postinst to pass -o iocharset=iso8859-1 to the mount
command, it was able to succeed.

I guess it is related to the kernel changes recently described on devel:

Bug#492465: python-dnspython: appears to be vulnerable to cache poisoning attack CVE-2008-1447

python-dnspython isn't a dns cache. it may be susceptible to forgery
resilience issues though. the qid field is explicitly randomized (but
with the standard library rng).

> Could you please look into this and see whether updated packages can and

from my testing (by repeatedly calling dns.resolver.query), dnspython
opens a new socket for each query. on my kernel (2.6.25) the source
port numbers appear to be random, but maybe this is a kernel feature
introduced since 2.6.18.

dnspython is a stub resolver, and not a general purpose one at that; i
would prefer to wait for upstream to provide an updated version.

btw, i have another specialized dns package in the archive (adns). do
you know if it needs forgery resilience?

Comments/Problems:

The installer couldn't mount its own partition - it seem that mount/the kernel
now by default tries to use iocharset=utf8 by default, but this charset isn't
available in the installer.
By changing iso-scan postinst to pass -o iocharset=iso8859-1 to the mount
command, it was able to succeed.

I guess it is related to the kernel changes recently described on devel:

I can't too on several other machines. It seems that for some reason
I had a stale file /usr/lib/liferea/liblihtmlx.so.disabled which
caused this error.

2008-07-27 Thread Rafael C. de Almeida
Package: systemtap
Version: 0.0.20061028-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

This package needs CONFIG_KPROBES to be set on the kernel, but the option is
unset on stock linux 2.6.18. This makes it impossible to execute even simple
scripts such as:

# stap -ve 'probe begin { log("hello world") exit () }'

I'm not aware of other stock kernel version which may have CONFIG_KPROBES set.

In debian, we have python 2.4 and 2.5, and SIP 4.7.
The quoted restrictions are therefore not relevant to the problem.

Rebuilding with gcc-4.2 fails in the same way, so I guess it is due to

Uhm nevermind, this is actually quite straightforwarded. update-grub doesn't

Package: tex-common

I don't see that tex-common should be doing anything with /usr/local/
anyway - I could have installed stuff in there from local builds and
tex-common comes along and replaces things (or worse, it currently tries
to and fails!).

To me, #475077 should have been a won't fix. Why should support for a
non-free package trample over user files?

Anyway, as regards this bug and the failure to complete the postinst:

Policy 9.1.2
As mandated by the FHS, packages must not place any files in /usr/local,
either by putting them in the file system archive to be unpacked by dpkg
or by manipulating them in their maintainer scripts.

However, the package may create empty directories below /usr/local so
that the system administrator knows where to place site-specific files.
These are not directories in /usr/local, but are children of directories
in /usr/local. These directories (/usr/local/*/dir/) should be removed
on package removal if they are empty.

tex-common is trying to create /usr/local/texmf when all that Policy
allows is /usr/local/share/texmf or some other subdirectory of the
existing contents of /usr/local:

$ ls /usr/local/
bin games include lib man sbin share src

Policy does NOT allow /usr/local/foo, only /usr/local/*/foo where the
subdirectory of /usr/local/ must already exist, like /usr/local/share/

/usr/local/share/texmf/ does exist (now) so presumably this is a typo in
the NMU:

tex-common.postinst
-chown root:staff /usr/local/texmf/emacs
+chown root:staff /usr/local/share/texmf/emacs

The first time it created /usr/local/share/texmf and died in the stupid
emacs stuff. The second time it didn't go into that code.

That is the reason why my install/remove/install/purge/install tests
didn't show that problem, I have /usr/local/share/texmf since ages...

Thanks for the report.

Bug#492655: First installation crashes with an error about /usr/local/texmf/emacs

2008-07-27 Thread Steve Cotton
I was also going to report this. Just adding the bits of my
report that aren't covered by Neil.

Subject: tex-common: First installation crashes with an error about
/usr/local/texmf/emacs
Package: tex-common
Version: 1.11.1
Severity: grave
Justification: installation fails with an error

The postinst script:
a) Mixes /usr/local/share/texmf and /usr/local/texmf
b) Crashes the first time it is run, unless /usr/local/texmf/emacs already
exists.
c) Successfully runs the second time it is run.

Which points to this bit of the postinst, added in 1.11.1:

# create empty dirs in /usr/local/share/
if [ ! -e /usr/local/share/texmf ]
then
  if mkdir -p /usr/local/share/texmf 2>/dev/null
  then
chown root:staff /usr/local/texmf/emacs
chmod 2775 /usr/local/share/texmf

Please try:

  mdadm -D -b /dev/md0
  mdadm -D /dev/md0

also check if the problem disappears with older versions of the mdadm package
(e.g. the one in etch).

Bug#492657: epiphany-webkit: not ready to be included in a stable release

2008-07-27 Thread Michael Gilbert
Package: epiphany-webkit
Version: 2.22.3-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

i don't believe that epiphany-webkit is ready to be included in a stable
release yet. yes, it can render webpages, and now even supports plugins,
but there are enough issues, which are not that severe individually, but
combined make the browser unusable. it would be a shame for users to end
up having a bad experience with this alpha-quality software if it were to
be included in an "official" release.

the issues that, when combined, make this problem grave are:

http://bugs.debian.org/452762 - text resized does not work
http://bugs.debian.org/464481 - ignores proxy settings
http://bugs.debian.org/467237 - find in page does not work
http://bugs.debian.org/467237 - cannot open links in new tabs
http://bugs.debian.org/476858 - print menu doesn't work
http://bugs.debian.org/467859 - cannot open links in new window
http://bugs.debian.org/490780 - no help if yelp not installed
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/525683 - keyword search doesn't work
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/529047 - doesn't store cookies
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/532510 - spelling/grammar functions don't work
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/532678 - remember passwords doesn't work

i think epiphany-webkit is great, and thanks for all the hard work, but
i just don't think its ready to be in a stable release.

i think that the epiphany-webkit package should be hinted out of
testing.

Bug#492655: tex-common: fails to install - no such file /usr/local/texmf/emacs

2008-07-27 Thread Neil Williams
Package: tex-common
Version: 1.11.1
Severity: grave
Justification: 9.1.2

Setting up tex-common (1.11.1) ...
Replacing config file /etc/texmf/texmf.d/85Misc.cnf with new version
Replacing config file /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf with new version
chown: cannot access `/usr/local/texmf/emacs': No such file or directory
dpkg: error processing tex-common (--configure):
 subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 tex-common
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

$ ls /usr/local/
bin games include lib man sbin share src

$ ls /usr/local/
bin games include lib man sbin share src

Policy does NOT allow /usr/local/foo, only /usr/local/*/foo where the
subdirectory of /usr/local/ must already exist, like /usr/local/share/

/usr/local/share/texmf/ does exist (now) so presumably this is a typo in
the NMU:

tex-common.postinst
-chown root:staff /usr/local/texmf/emacs
+chown root:staff /usr/local/share/texmf/emacs

?

Hi again !

I of course noticed this when preparing the package.

Hence, I got at this time a notification from the author that this is indeed
not a license restriction, nor debian specific.

Now, if you really want a written mail from the author, I could contact him
again, but I don't think it's necessary...

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable

or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.

Bug#492530: jbidwatcher: is this DFSG compatible ?

Doesn't that make jbidwatcher non-free ?

Hi !

I don't think so:
"As several people have asked, this isn't an addendum to the license"

Yes, that page is not very coherent :

"If you have a commercial need for a subsection of the program that you
would like to ask about, or if you have a need that you feel the
JBidwatcher code can meet but you'll need to resell it for some reason,
please feel free to contact me ,
and I'll see if my employer and I can work out the legalities in a way
that handles it cleanly."

I'm not an expert, but IMHO the safe side is non-free, unless we have a
(non debian specific) clarification from the developper.

Yet the final decision is yours, I won't reopen the bug report myself if
you feel confident about the "freeness" of this package, nor will I
bother you anymore :-)

Thanks for your work,

Bug#491563: current openjdk-6 packages fail to build

2008-07-27 Thread peter green

the current packages fail to build using the openjdk-6 in the archive, or using
the ecj based bootstrap.
Looks like the package is now building successfully on all architectures it has ever built successfully on.

Should this bug now be closed (or if the build was fixed by a workarround possiblly downgraded instead)
so openjdk can make it into lenny?

Please show (ls -l) what is

After that, does running 'dpkg --triggers-only --pending' launch
anything?

If not, does 'update-python-modules -p' fix the issue ?

Whenever the emacs packages are updated, all .elc files are purged and
regenerated using the newly-installed version. During the compilation
process, one cannot rely on any feature being installed since the
source directories are not part of the load-path.

emacsen-install scripts for any package that requires features from
another package can add that package's source directory to the
load-path for its byte-compilation process. (I have added the w3m-el
path for sepia as the workaround for #492602.) But there is no sane
way for an emacsen-install script to determine whether a third package
has modified any of the required features during system startup.

The symptom looks like this:
,
| # apt-get --reinstall install emacs22-gtk
| [...]
| Wrote /usr/share/emacs22/site-lisp/sepia/sepia-cpan.elc
| Wrote /usr/share/emacs22/site-lisp/sepia/sepia.elc
| Wrote /usr/share/emacs22/site-lisp/sepia/sepia-ido.elc
| Wrote /usr/share/emacs22/site-lisp/sepia/sepia-snippet.elc
| Wrote /usr/share/emacs22/site-lisp/sepia/sepia-tree.elc
|
| In toplevel form:
| sepia-w3m.el:37:13:Error: Cannot open load file: w3m-wget
| Wrote /usr/share/emacs22/site-lisp/sepia/snippet.elc
| emacs-install: /usr/lib/emacsen-common/packages/install/sepia emacs22 failed
at /usr/lib/emacsen-common/emacs-install line 28,  line 56.
| dpkg: error processing emacs22-gtk (--configure):
| subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
| Errors were encountered while processing:
|  emacs22-gtk
| E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
`

sepia has no dependencies on wget-el at all. After purging wget-el,
sepia was byte-compiled fine when I issued:

# dpkg --configure emacs22-gtk

You should be able to reproduce this behavior on a system with both
sepia 0.97-3 (which I have just uploaded) and wget-el installed. Just
do an

# apt-get --reinstall install emacs22-gtk

(or any other emacs22 build).

Cheers,
-Hilko

Bug#491354: Handling of RC licensing bugs in TeXLive

Hi all,

will someone among you find time to handle this issue? You are probably
aware that the texlive cannot simply be removed if their RC bug seems to
block the release, because this would cause tons of FTBFS RC bugs.

So this has to be acted on. For one of the three bugs, we ask for a
lenny-ignore tag. For one more, we ask you to consider this, although we
are unsure whether this is acceptable for the release team.

Version: 0.8.4.5

Usertags: nonfree-doc rfc

Hi!

This source package contains the following files from the
IETF under non-free license terms:

  pyftpd-0.8.4.5/rfc959.txt.gz

Btw, the file appears to be corrupt, look at the end of the file. Gzip
complains when decompressing it.

The license on RFC/I-Ds is not DFSG-free, see:
 * http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=199810
 * http://release.debian.org/removing-non-free-documentation
 * http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments

The lenny release policy says binary and source packages must each be free:
 * http://release.debian.org/lenny/rc_policy.txt

The severity is serious, because this violates the Debian policy:
 * http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-archive.html#s-dfsg

There are (at least) three ways to fix this problem. In order of
preference:

1. Ask the author of the RFC to re-license the RFC under a free
   license. A template for this e-mail request can be found at
   http://wiki.debian.org/NonFreeIETFDocuments

2. Remove the non-free material from the source, e.g., by re-packaging
   the upstream archive and adding 'dfsg' to the Debian package
   version name.

3. Move the package to non-free.

General discussions are kindly requested to take place on debian-legal
or debian-devel in the thread with Subject: "Non-free IETF RFC/I-Ds in
source packages".

Thanks,
Simon

Severity: serious
Justification: breaks unrelated packages

As discussed on the list, dh_installtex when used with debhelper >= 6
will create incorrect postrm scripts because the order of the snippets
inclusion has changed.

Oh - do prayer depend on features only available in libc-client2007 or
newer?

If so, it was wrong of me to change to use the virtual package. A valid
dependency could then instead be the following:

 libc-client (7:2007) | libc-client2007b | libc-client2007

That first part is to support a planned switch to unversioned
libc-client post-lenny.

Will you do the change or do you want me to do it?

Sorry for the inconvenience of the weird naming uw-imap scheme. Some
time ago it was required by an odd license, and I just didn't find time
yet to simplify it again.

Since libc-client-dev is virtual it's no longer possible to express the build
dependency on version 2007 or newer. I find that a bit unsatisfactory.

Package: libaudio-cd-perl
Version: 0.05-6
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

As seen on ,
this package is empty on the alpha, mips, and mipsel architectures.
The build daemons on these use sudo instead of fakeroot to build the
binary-* targets, and the problem is that sudo resets the environment
variable PWD so the files are installed into a wrong place.

The trivial fix is to use $(CURDIR), which is set by make, instead of
$(PWD), which is set by the shell and reset by sudo.

This really can't be the output for iceweasel 3.0* versions, and your
dpkg -l output tells 2.0.0.16-0ecth1. Are you sure this is the correct
machine where it crashes ?

Bug#492455: strongswan: do not compile with --enable-padlock

2008-07-27 Thread Thomas Kallenberg
Package: strongswan
Version: 4.2.4-1
Followup-For: Bug #492455

Hi!

I'm working in the strongswan team and i wrote this plugin. Kurt is
right. There is no other architecture than i386 with padlock engine.
By the way, this plugin is still experimental and only there for the IKE
protocol because ipsec uses the padlock engine in the linux kernel and
loads this module automaticaly.
So please do not add the configure flag for the padlock engine.

Thanks Thomas Kallenberg

Hi,
the following CVE (Common Vulnerabilities & Exposures) id was
published for xemacs21.

CVE-2007-6109[0]:
| Stack-based buffer overflow in emacs allows user-assisted attackers to
| cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly have
| unspecified other impact via a large precision value in an integer
| format string specifier to the format function, as demonstrated via a
| certain "emacs -batch -eval" command line.

We believed that xemacs21 is unaffected by this first but it
turned out (Thanks to Florian) that it actually is but at a
differen place:
src/doprnt.c:

  /* Mostly reconstruct the spec and use sprintf() to
 format the string. */

  *p++ = '%';
  if (spec->plus_flag)   *p++ = '+';
  if (spec->space_flag)  *p++ = ' ';
  if (spec->number_flag) *p++ = '#';
  if (spec->minus_flag)  *p++ = '-';
  if (spec->zero_flag)   *p++ = '0';

  if (spec->minwidth >= 0)
p = long_to_string (p, spec->minwidth);
  if (spec->precision >= 0)
{
  *p++ = '.';
  p = long_to_string (p, spec->precision);
}

  if (strchr (double_converters, ch))
{
  *p++ = ch;
  *p++ = '\0';
  sprintf (text_to_print, constructed_spec, arg.d);
}
  else
{
  *p++ = 'l';   /* Always use longs with sprintf() */
  *p++ = ch;
  *p++ = '\0';

  if (strchr (unsigned_int_converters, ch))
sprintf (text_to_print, constructed_spec, arg.ul);
  else
sprintf (text_to_print, constructed_spec, arg.l);
}

If you fix this vulnerability please also include the CVE id
in your changelog entry.

I cannot install www-mysql with apache2. Is this because there is
some true incompatibility or just because the dependencies need
updating? apache2 is the default version of apache these days, it
would seem, so this is an important bug.

  What I mean, is that the glibc performs no additionnal RR caching,
which is how the attack poisons caches. Moreover the glibc is _not_ a
recursive resolver either. And finally it also uses random source ports,
which is the simplest way to prevent Kaminsky's attack.

  That's another matter which doesn't warrant a critical severity at
all. The glibc stub resolver is already "safe enough" by many standards.
I don't deny it could be hardened though (Improving the RNG is probably
not a bad idea).

Hi,

It seems that pdnsd is vulnerable to the DNS cache poisoning attack
as described by Dan Kaminski and referenced as CVE-2008-1447. I'm
not intimately aware of pdnsd; could you look into this issue and
see whether it's indeed vulnerable and whether an updated package
can be provided?

Reading the source code didn't give me any indication of source
port randomisation so I'm filing this as grave until we're either
sure that it's not vulnerable or that a fix has been applied.

thanks,
Thijs

The security team already asked, and yes it uses port randomization,
it's documented in pdnsd.conf and the source matches too.

Justification: FTBFS on i386

Hi,

During a rebuild of all packages in sid, your package failed to build on i386.

This rebuild was done with gcc 4.3 instead of gcc 4.2, because gcc 4.3 is now
the default on most architectures (even if it's not the case on i386 yet).
Feel free to downgrade this bug to 'important' if your package is only built
on i386, and this bug is specific to gcc 4.3 (i.e the package builds fine with
gcc 4.2).

The full build log is available from:
   http://people.debian.org/~lucas/logs/2008/04/07

A list of current common problems and possible solutions is available at
http://wiki.debian.org/qa.debian.org/FTBFS . You're welcome to contribute!

About the archive rebuild: The rebuild was done on about 50 AMD64 nodes
of the Grid'5000 platform, using a clean chroot containing a sid i386
environment. Internet was not accessible from the build systems.

Hi,

This is a Build-Depends vs Build-Depends-Indep problem. At the least
libgcj-common should be in Build-Depends.

In the mean time I've been setting up netconsole, which (I can only start
it just before invoking kdm, as the ethernet driver (tulip) doesn't really
like netconsole) only shows the following:

netconsole: network logging started
[drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810
mtrr: no more MTRRs available
[drm] Initialized savage 2.4.1 20050313 on minor 0
mtrr: no more MTRRs available
mtrr: base(0xf200) is not aligned on a size(0x500) boundary

agpgart: Putting AGP V2 device at :00:00.0 into 0x mode
agpgart: Putting AGP V2 device at :01:00.0 into 0x mode

Then, as soon as the X server tries to start, the system locks up
immediately with a black screen and the fan humming at full speed.

I'll try this today, thanks for your hints

The current version with 02_temporary_revert_pciaccess.diff applied and the
following commits reverted

works reliably for me since early june, (the earlier version did as well,
of course).

Just now, I managed to start X with xserver-xorg-video-savage 1:2.2.1-1
(without any changes) once (Xorg.0.log_2.2.1-1-working.log.gz attached), it
failed/ crashed for the following reboots though (attached as
