Bug#490217: CVE for python-dns

2008-09-16 Thread Scott Kitterman
   This is CVE-2008-4099; can you please add it to the changelog of
   2.3.1-5 retroactively on your next upload?

  I don't find that CVE on cve.mitre.org. Do you have a reference?

 http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2008/09/16/4

Thanks. Will do. This is also fixed upstream in 2.3.2/3 if anyone asks.

Bug#495083: remove libphp-phplot and acidlab from lenny

2008-09-16 Thread Thomas Viehmann
Hi,

as documented by #435176 and then #495083 libphp-phplot has been
unusable since May 2007. In fact, it has been empty(!) since May 2008,
i.e. for over four months, with no-one actually noticing until a bug
report was filed in mid-August (unanswered for a month) - welcome to the
wonderful world of diligent maintainer testing before upload.
It has one reverse dependency, acidlab. No-one seems to have cared about
acidlab being uninstallable or with unusable dependency for a year either.
acidlab had previously been removed from unstable for neglect and
libphp-phplot also had managed to raise QA concerns (#475757) which the
maintainer violently. IMO it might be time to think about removal from
unstable as well, but I'll leave that up to the QA people.

Kind regards

T.

Bug#495083: remove libphp-phplot and acidlab from lenny

Acidlab does not actually require libphp-phplot. Many users can use acidlab
without the plotting functionality.

On the other hand Acidlab has ben superseded by acidbase. Which is an
enhanced fork that is being actively maintained (acidlab has not seen an
upstream update for years and will probably not see one anymore).

Acidlab use [1] has been diminishing in time whileas acidbase [2] has
increased so it is probably time to remove one in favour of the other one.

I cannot prepare a transition plan from one to the other (which should be more
than just an empty package with a Depends: acidbase). If somebody is willing
to help the existing Acidlab users with a transition package for lenny I would
really
appreciate it.

If QA thinks that the best route is to RM this package that is fine too.

Regards

Javier

Bug#499175: geordi fails with 'setResourceLimit: invalid argument'

2008-09-16 Thread Bradley Smith
Package: geordi
Version: 20080803T2044-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

When running geordi (or geordi-local) it fails to run with the following:

I: Refreshing chroot
I: (To avoid refreshing every time, edit ALWAYS_REFRESH_CHROOT in
I: /etc/geordi/scripts-config)
I: Refreshing chroot in /var/lib/geordi/rt
I: Compiling prelude
I: Using g++: /usr/bin/g++
I: Copying libraries
I: Running test binary
I: Setting defaults
I: Done.
geordi-local: setResourceLimit: invalid argument (Invalid argument)

The appropriate part when stracing is:

setrlimit(RLIMIT_NOFILE, {rlim_cur=25, rlim_max=0}) = -1 EINVAL (Invalid
argument)

When looking through the geordi source package to try and debug the
issue, I noticed the following in the upstream ChangeLog

Wed May 28 14:07:43 CEST 2008 Eelis [EMAIL PROTECTED]
  * Bump GHC requirement to 6.8.3 for i386 because of setResourceLimit bug.

Seeing as debian currently only has ghc 6.8.2, and I'm on an i386 machine,
this is most likely the problem. (The bug was confirmed on another i386
machine)

Regards,
Bradley Smith

Hi,

debian-cd includes (at least) syslinux binaries without source.

debian-cd should take the syslinux binaries out of the archive when
building images.

Fixed in svn, ready for upload soon. Current daily/weekly builds will
already do the right thing.

  unable to flush /var/lib/dpkg/updates/tmp.i after padding: Disk quota
 exceeded

Here's where the problem starts. That «tmp.i» file is the one that has
been filled with '#padding' lines, the fflush() in createimptmp() fails,
and it ohshite()s, but just before it has been able to rewind the file to
the beginning.

 Processing triggers for man-db ...
 /usr/bin/mandb: can't write to /var/cache/man/19933: Disk quota exceeded
 gdbm fatal: read error
 dpkg: failed to write status record about `libcairo2' to
 `/var/lib/dpkg/status': Disk quota exceeded
 E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)
 A package failed to install. Trying to recover:
 dpkg: parse error, in file `/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0119' near line 1:
  newline in field name `#padding'
 Press return to continue.

The second problem is that even if the ohshite() called from
createimptmp() is protected inside an onerr_abort section, the execution
continues in archivefiles(), out of process_archive() but into
process_queue(), which at some point calls a modstatdb_note(), moving
the «tmp.i» file into the «0119» one, then another ohshite() is called
and the onerr_abort is sensed again, making process_queue() terminate
its loop.

 # dpkg --configure -a
 dpkg: parse error, in file `/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0119' near line 1:
  newline in field name `#padding'
 #

But at the point that modstat_note() was called the function wrote at
the end of it, preserving all the '#padding' lines, and making dpkg
barf subsequently.

So I think there's two things to fix here, one is that the fseek() in
createimptmp() should be done just before the fwrite() in
modstatdb_note_core() to guarantee that we are going to be always at the
beginning, and we make proper use of the reserved space allocated
previously with those '#padding' lines to avoid the out of space
condition. That's a 4-liner patch, which should be fine for lenny, and
prevents this bogus condition were the user most probably is going to
remove that file to be able to continue, which might produce an
inconsistent state in the dpkg db. And the real problem is that there
might not be an easy manual fix by the users if the status data could
not be completely written to the update file.

The other is that when onerr_abort is signaled dpkg should not
continue processing anything anymore, it should just do whatever cleanup
is required and exit. But that can wait probably post-lenny.

regards,
guillem

I thought the sequence that matters would be:
sudo addgroup foo

But maybe I misread it. I think, without having the time to look
carefully at it this minute, that this will be another 0/NULL conflation
in the code that checks whether a uid is non-zero instead of checking
whether it exists. Since we don't use that code in the new version,
I think it's fine, and we should tag this appropriately and close it,
but I'd like confirmation before doing so.

Bug#495083: remove libphp-phplot and acidlab from lenny

  i.e. for over four months, with no-one actually noticing until a bug
  report was filed in mid-August (unanswered for a month) - welcome to the

  It has one reverse dependency, acidlab. No-one seems to have cared about
  acidlab being uninstallable or with unusable dependency for a year either.
  acidlab had previously been removed from unstable for neglect and
  libphp-phplot also had managed to raise QA concerns (#475757) which the

  unstable as well, but I'll leave that up to the QA people.

 Acidlab does not actually require libphp-phplot. Many users can use acidlab
 without the plotting functionality.

However, acidlab Depends: on libphp-phplot, so libphp-phplot cannot be
removed. So, since I think removing libphp-phplot would be good to do,
maybe we could get an upload of acidlab dropping the dependency? (Or
lowering to Suggests for documentation purposes, whatever.) But see
below.

If somebody is willing
 to help the existing Acidlab users with a transition package for lenny I
 would really
 appreciate it.

 If QA thinks that the best route is to RM this package that is fine too.

I don't know what QA thinks, but my opinion from a release point of view
is that is sounds appropriate to remove it unless you (as the maintainer)
have a more qualified opinion/reasons that it should stay for Lenny. Is
that the case?

Cheers,

Package: python-matplotlib
Version: 0.98.1-1
Severity: serious

The current version of python-matplotlib in debian testing and lenny
has a number of serious bugs and omissions

 * Bug: memory leak using shared axes (attached script looptest.py
shows the leak)

 * Bug: transforms method offset_copy missing -- this breaks
examples/pylab_examples/transoffset.py

 * Omission - the doc directory was omitted from the 0.98.1 MANIFEST

These are fixed in matplotlib svn r5907
import math
import gc
import pylab as PL
from matplotlib.cbook import report_memory

def looptest():
oldlen = 0
for i in xrange(401):
fig=PL.figure(1)
ax = fig.gca()
ax=fig.add_subplot(211)
ax.set_position((0,0,0.9,0.45))
ax1=PL.twinx(ax)
t = PL.arange(1000)
st = PL.sin(t*0.01)
ax.plot(t,st)
fig.clf()

# any of these causes a memleak
#PL.close(1)
#PL.close(fig)
#PL.close()

gc.collect()
val = report_memory(i)
if i % 100 == 0:

print len(gc.get_objects()), len(gc.get_objects())-oldlen,
print len(gc.garbage),

Bug#493724: /usr/games/poker2d: hangs at startup

I managed to get the program to start by adding a _simtag = None in
poker2d.py. Unfortunately after that I wasn't able to progress much
further.

For example, selecting Options - High quality graphics produced a
traceback on the console and somehow I generated a number of ERROR
*CRITICAL*; should not be here messages on the console (often
accompanied by a you can't do that at the moment message on the UI).

It also seemed really determined not to die :-) Quitting the UI left the
console process running and not closing on keyboard interrupts; I had to
kill -9 it to get rid of it.

Bug#495083: remove libphp-phplot and acidlab from lenny

2008-09-16 Thread Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña

  Acidlab does not actually require libphp-phplot. Many users can use acidlab
  without the plotting functionality.

 However, acidlab Depends: on libphp-phplot, so libphp-phplot cannot be
 removed. So, since I think removing libphp-phplot would be good to do,
 maybe we could get an upload of acidlab dropping the dependency? (Or
 lowering to Suggests for documentation purposes, whatever.) But see
 below.

Done.

 I don't know what QA thinks, but my opinion from a release point of view
 is that is sounds appropriate to remove it unless you (as the maintainer)
 have a more qualified opinion/reasons that it should stay for Lenny. Is
 that the case?

I think that if acidlab is removed a clear upgrade path to the available fork
(acidbase) should be defined. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to do
implement one right now.

Javier

Bug#499198: linux-image-2.6.26-1-amd64: complete system freeze

2008-09-16 Thread Sandro Tosi
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-amd64
Version: 2.6.26-5
Severity: grave

Hello,
this bug is somewhat related to #499046 and #498328: with the above kernel
version, after about 3 days of uptime the system completely freeze, without
writing anything in /var/log/{messages,kern.log,syslog}. Usually it's
anticipated by a crazy char repetition (like in #498328) or somethings by a
system slowdown until freeze.

This usually happen when I do something particular heavy: like restarting a
service like mysql, or apt-get-ing something.

I cannot no anything; something the situation resolve like in #499046, so after
a couple of minutes I have access back to my workstation, other times I'm not
so lucky and the machine completely freezes, not even ssh remote access is
allowed.

I'm available to do tests, if needed, and now I'm forced back to 2.6.25, hoping
the situation with this kernel will be better.

The machine is an up-to-date sid.

Thanks,
Sandro

If you want to help in future sync up with me. I have branches where
you can contribute. I dont even mind to let others upload as long as
things are maintained in proper branches. But posting a debdiff
with a NMU intend for a trivial fix _one_ day after I uploaded a fix to
fix all outstanding RC bugs doesnt really sound like you thought about
this ...

Anyway. i am always on #debian-devel and will reply to reasonable
pings as soon as i open my screen.

Thanks!

require a sourceful upload which will follow in the next day or so.
