your response was:

"Version: 2.4.0-1

There are multiple things going on here:
- A misbehaving script interacting badly with gimp 2.2
- The gimp process wasn't exited cleanly, so it didn't clean up its temp
files
- Ext3 filesystems have space reserved for root by default"

I'm not sure who responded to my original message, but this response is
certainly not adequate. I'm sure you get false bug reports from noobs all
the time, and maybe this is another one; however, I would like to point
out that my time is at least as valuable as any member of the debian team.
I spent many hours attempting to solve this bug and following the bug
reporting instructions line-by-line, making a conscious effort to not
waste someone else's time.

Does the response I got mean that it has been decided that there is no
bug. Does it mean that you don't care about bugs in gimp 2.2 because a
newer version of gimp is available (I just checked again, and it says that
my version of gimp, 2.2.13-1etch4, is the latest one for etch, which is
the latest stable release)? Did anyone even run the script to duplicate
the results?

A program that allows a script to behave badly has a bug. I just checked
the gimp documentation, and it didn't mention anything about the dangers
of running new scripts on older versions (of course, it's the software's
job to check). A program that doesn't clean-up it's temp files has a bug,
especially when that program was restarted and closed "cleanly". Could
you please tell me where these unclean temp files are? They aren't in my
/tmp directory.

Apparently, there is space reserved for root. I came across this
explanation as a reason for a disk discrepancy. Silly me for dismissing
it, thinking that it would be electronically insane to automatically
reserve 10GB of space for root, bill gates would be proud.

Because this is free software, I certainly don't expect anything; however,
honesty is appreciated. If you don't care about this bug, please just be
honest and say that you have no desire to create bug-free code. I can
spend my valuable time figuring out a work around on my own.

I also see this behaviour, and it is because the intial data imported

for my locales, en and en_GB, by replacing the character with a regular

Package: python-ctypes
Version: 1.0.2-2
Severity: important

Hi,

if you install python-ctypes on a minimal debootstrap system and run
the code:

import ctypes
import ctypes.util
ctypes.util.find_library('c')

you will get an empty string from the find_library function, while the
expected value should be 'libc.so.6'.

To make it work you have to install the binutils package, which I'd
consider a dependency of python-ctypes.

I'm setting priority "important" because this bug makes some part of
python-ctypes unusable. It would be nice to fix this in Lenny as well.

Thanks,

Free Ekanayaka

Bug#509698: cherokee: ldap_init implicitly converted to pointer

2008-12-24 Thread dann frazier
Package: cherokee
Version: 0.11.3-2
Severity: serious
Tags: patch
Usertags: implicit-pointer-conversion

Our automated buildd log filter[1] detected a problem that is likely to
cause your package to segfault on architectures where the size of a
pointer is greater than the size of an integer, such as ia64 and amd64.

Function `ldap_init' implicitly converted to pointer at validator_ldap.c:161

This is often due to a missing function prototype definition.
For more information, see [2].

The libldap API has been updated and many functions used by the ldap
plugin are now deprecated. This package should either update to the
new API or define LDAP_DEPRECATED to continue using the deprecated
interfaces.

This patch implements the lazy solution.

Though it is guaranteed that this codepath will cause a segfault on certain
architectures, it is not guaranteed that this codepath would ever be executed
(e.g., if the returned pointer is never dereferenced). However, this bug
does prevent the ia64 buildd from successfully building this package, resulting
in a practical FTBFS issue and warranting the serious severity.

(oh, and hi Gunnar!)

python-ctypes/python2.5 uses objdump in ctypes/util.py but does not
declare a dependency on binutils, which contains objdump.
This leads to the fact, that one can't load libs when binutils are not
installed (see #509623, #453287).

Mh, just tested in a VM, installing "binutils" should be enough.

Yes, upstream has fixed the vulnerability, but not yet release a
stable (non-beta) version. Next stable release will be on 01.01.09 but
this release will also come with quite some features.

Noah Meyerhans from seacurity-team and I have been working on a
backport of the upstream fixes for mailscanner-4.68.8.

Current state of this work is: It works (MailScanner starts and scans
a simple textmail) but it's not well tested. There still need to be
done some testing with TNEF attachment, virus removal and some other
cases.

I currently don't Know when I will have the time to do this.

I have attached the diff against 4.68.8 debian package.

Bug#509623: fretsonfire GL problems.

2008-12-24 Thread Andreas Henriksson
Hello!

Do you have binutils installed? If not, could you please install it and
see if it fixes the problem with frets on fire?

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/keyjnote/+bug/211962 seems to
suggest you need objdump for python-opengl to work.

(Btw, there are more packages suffering from the same python-opengl
problem, c.f. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=453287 )

Thanks for tracking this down and backporting it, Ben. I hope I'll
have time to make an upload in a couple of days. (Like much of the
world, I'm out of town today and tomorrow.)

Yeah, that's been true since the beginning of time. Maybe if I switch
to openjdk (as Ubuntu did already) that'll help.

Bug#509686: [CVE-2008-5558] remote crash of asterisk with realtime IAX2 users/peers

2008-12-24 Thread Tzafrir Cohen
Package: asterisk
Version: 1:1.2.13~dfsg-2etch3
Severity: grave
Tags: pending security etch

There is a possibility to remotely crash an Asterisk server if the
server is configured to use realtime IAX2 users. The issue occurs if
either an unknown user attempts to authenticate or if a user that uses
hostname matching attempts to authenticate.

http://downloads.digium.com/pub/asa/AST-2008-012.html

The advisory mentions that the issue is for versions 1.2.26 - 1.2.30.3 ,
however it was introduced in a previous bugfix that has already been
included in Debian, specifically in AST-2007-027.dpatch that was added
in 1:1.2.13~dfsg-2etch3 .

I included this patch in
http://svn.debian.org/viewsvn/pkg-voip?rev=6581&view=rev

Package: wicd
Version: 1.5.2-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

wicd needs dependencies on some of the external tools it uses. In
particular, it should have a dependency on dhcpcd | dhcp3-client |
pump, a dependency on net-tools | ethtool, and a dependency on
net-tools | iproute.

In theory, wicd could operate without a DHCP client if you used it
with static address information only. Similarly, wicd could operate
without a wired link detection mechanism. Thus, you could choose to
make them Recommends. However, almost all users of wicd likely want
this functionality; I'd personally argue for Depends.

Bug#506353: lenny removal requests

The vulnerabilities in MailScanner have all been fixed.

I'm in no position to fix all this. I'm not familiar enough with
the MailScanner sourcecode and I'm not able to test the changes I
would have to make, in particular to all the virusscanner scripts.
upstream apparently does not seem to, let's say, consider the tempfile
vulnerability a bug and does not seem to want to fix it.

The mailscanner temp vulnerability seems to be fixed in upstream:

 lock files.
Note: This vulnerability only affected systems where normal
interactive users
could log in to the system, or create arbitrary symlinks in your
filesystem.
So the ISP-style setups were never vulnerable, as they didn't allow
normal
users to login or allow people to arbitrarily create symlinks in the
filesystem.

Removal hint added. FWIW, software like mailscanner, having extensive
contact with possible attackers, should be maintained by someone who's
able to fix security issues in a timely manner. The fact that it isn't
is grounds to remove it from lenny.

time. The second time it finished without errors and proceeded with the
boot process.

I was able to repeat this bug numerous times on my system. I have not
been able to recover the hard drive space that disappears. I checked the
usual suspects (/var, /tmp, and .profile directories). I'm running
fluxbox, so I don't have a trash icon. I have not modified any partitions
in years.

I spent hours researching a possible cause/solution. The malfunctions I
found that cause mildly similar symptoms are a decompression bomb, or disk
blocks still in use by a deleted file. Trouble-shooting problems like
this is well beyond my skill level. Just in case, here are the links:

http://www.aerasec.de/security/advisories/decompression-bomb-vulnerability.html)
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/699252.html

Also of note is my system is now missing hard drive space (over 10GB).
While running 'df', I noticed that 'used' + 'available' does not equal the
total '1-k blocks'. I'm not positive that this discrepancy wasn't there
before gimp crashed the first time, but I first noticed the discrepancy
after the crash. I was not able to repeat a similar discrepancy in later
crashes.

Bug#506353: lenny removal requests

2008-12-24 Thread Gabor FUNK

so here are three RC bugs with maintainers clearly indicating that they
don't want the buggy packages to release and none look like they will be
fixed. The package do not have reverse dependencies, so they seem to be
good for removal.

mailscanner #506353
 The maintainer Simon Walter writes:
In the current state the package should not be part of
   the lenny release.

---

2 Major work on removing symlink attack vulnerabilities
affecting -autoupdate

 lock files.
Note: This vulnerability only affected systems where normal interactive
users
could log in to the system, or create arbitrary symlinks in your
filesystem.

So the ISP-style setups were never vulnerable, as they didn't allow normal
users to login or allow people to arbitrarily create symlinks in the
filesystem.

Bug#494408: exec-shield for recent kernels

2008-12-24 Thread Laurentiu Pancescu
Did you try the more recent versions of exec-shield from Fedora CVS? [1]
RedHat continues to maintain the patch, I think it's standard in Fedora, along
with SELinux. I didn't try to apply their latest patch for 2.6.26 (revision
1.93 or 1.94) to a Debian kernel source, but it might be a better starting
point than the current version in Debian.
