Bug#509616: [gmane.comp.video.ffmpeg.devel] [PATCH] fix crash in vp3.c

2008-12-28 Thread Reinhard Tartler

Nico Golde n...@debian.org writes:
I have to admit that I don't really understand as well what the code
here does, but I agree to michael that the approach to this patch is
wrong. FFmpeg cannot be made robust to all kind of wrong data. There
will always be some ways how to abuse a library.

Why? I think that's wrong, it makes no sense to fix such
things in vlc, xine and mplayer if it can be fixed in
ffmpeg. I agree that it's bad that mplayer is passinf faulty
data to ffmpeg here but I fail to see a reason why avcodec
shouldn't handle this. I don't want to play bug pingpong but
 please let's talk about that.

of course, if there is a bug in ffmpeg, it of course should be
fixed. AFAIU Michael's response he acknowledges that there is a bug in
the function. However ffmpeg (and debian as well, btw) has a history of
fixing the bugs only with sensible fixes, which involves understanding
the fix fully. Your patch however does not match that description.

Moreover, I cannot really comment on the correctness of your patch. The
code is sufficiently complicated that I'd rather only include them in
the package if upstream gives it blessing. Diego wasn't sure himself, so
he forwarded the patch to the ffmpeg mailing list for you. Michael then
in turn rejected your patch. If you really want to investigate further,
I'd suggest that you follow up on the mail I forwarded to you.

Unfortunately, we don't seem to be able to get much/any response from
the maintainers. It would have been really useful to have a comment
 recently.

Is there any way that this library can be permitted to enter testing with
  all these changes?

 Not really, no.

  * Find the fix for this issue and backport it on top of 1.0.1-4

 This would be preferred.

  * Remove libwebkit-1.0-1 from lenny

Possible, but not something I'm too happy with given it's popcon.

More than its popcon, the real problem is its reverse dependencies, some
of which can't be removed without massive work on the packages, because
they do provide alternatives (think epiphany, liferea, ...).

  * Simply allow lenny to release with 1.0.1-4 that is this broken.

Could anyone confirm how broken this is? Is it all sites, or a
selection? Maintainers: do you have an opinion on this bug?

According to upstream, a new release was due soon after I uploaded to
experimental, but hasn't happened yet. I may be part of the reason for
the delay because of my lack of time to test the build on all
architectures (and the experimental buildd network still hasn't got
mips or arm...)

According to upstream, still, a lot of bugs have been fixed between
1.0.1 and the version in experimental right now, and FWIW, the BTS
already has 5 such crash bugs that are fixed in experimental.

Anyways, I think libwebkit-1.0-1 is one of these few packages that it
would be good to have in the release, yet we can't guarantee it works
properly. Maybe we should have a special unsupported section for
stable, or we should allow packages to ship with some of their
dependencies only fulfilled from unstable, which would state their
unsupported status.

Anyways, I will check again with upstream what the plans are for
this new release and will keep you posted.

Mike

page-crunch depends on gs-common for 'pdf2ps' and 'ps2pdf'.

[details on discussing individual issues separately snipped]

Unfortunatly, I have to agree from a release team POV (i.e. speaking
with my Release Manager hat on) with maks on the general status of the
package, especially as maks spoke with his kernel arch maintainer hat
on (so his remarks shouldn't be lightly waived away).

One might discuss about the adequate severity of the individual bugs,
but they together makes this package RC buggy. (Perhaps even some of
the individual bugs make it - we can discuss that at the individual bug
reports if wanted.) But there are some cases like brutal hardcoding -
breaks ony every new linux image either due to /proc, /sys or
/boot/config hardcoded parsing see #443821 for the latest 2.6.23
variation which are *not* fixed by adjusting to the current kernel,
but we expect some flexibility and robustness as long term strategy.

Do the release team still consider yaird too buggy for release with
Lenny?

Yaird is no more brutal in its hardcoded knowledge about Linux than
initramfs-tools, it just hardcodes different kinds of info. If you
disagree then please file a separate bugreport about what you believe is
brutal about yaird.

Bug #443821 was *not* not adjusted to the curent kernel as Andreas
interprets above. I welcome discussing that issue in detail - but not
here: Please discuss details at the related bugreport!

Yaird does *not* break on every new linux image - it has worked fine
for the last 4 upstream releases of Linux. If you disagree then please
discuss this issue at bug #457467.

True, yaird does not succeed in all cases. Neither do initramfs-tools.
Main difference is that yaird often realize problems at ramdisk *build*
time rather than runtime, so instead of rendering the whole system
unbootable it only causes the installation of the new kernel to fail.

So I ask again: Do the release team still consider yaird too buggy for
release with Lenny?

Kind regards,

  - Jonas

The idea is to not change reverse dependencies at this point but to

your package would be fine depending on gs-common.

I just made a little change to help the compiler
perform aliasing analysis around map_lookup.
Using char* instead of void* often helps
because the C aliasing rules are crazy.

Please let me know if the cvs version of djvulibre-3.5 now works.
Otherwise we'll have to hack the makefiles to use -O2.

Bug#508397: Bug#509874, #508397: undefined reference to umount2 on ia64

2008-12-28 Thread Simon McVittie
reopen 508397
retitle 508397 dietlibc: umount2 still undefined on ia64, and umount is wrong
block 509874 by 508397
thanks

Bug#508397 in dietlibc is still not fixed on ia64, causing the FTBFS
that is #509874. I am not an expert on alpha or ia64 (and don't own an
example of either) but my interpretation of the problem is:

* Case 1: Typical architectures like i386 have syscalls sys_umount(path, flags)
and sys_oldumount(path), corresponding to the C library functions
  umount2(path, flags) and umount(path). __NR_umount2 corresponds to
  sys_umount and __NR_umount corresponds to sys_oldumount. dietlibc
  always supported this case.

* Case 2: Old versions of Linux only have a syscall equivalent to the
  modern sys_oldumount(path) and umount(path). __NR_umount corresponds to
what we would now call sys_oldumount and __NR_umount2 is absent.
dietlibc always supported this case, and would simply not provide the
umount2 API (but would still declare it in sys/mount.h, which is
  arguably a bug).

* Case 3: alpha instead has __NR_umount corresponding to sys_umount, and
  __NR_oldumount = sys_oldumount. Micah's patch in dietlibc 0.31-1.1 fixed
  this case.

(Side note: I have no idea what the justification was for making
alpha inconsistent in the kernel headers)

* Case 4: ia64 never had oldumount. __NR_umount corresponds to
sys_umount(path, flags) and there is no syscall that only takes a path.
If you just look at the syscall numbers, this case is
  indistinguishable from case 2 :-(

(Side note: Linux kernel people could have solved this by calling this
syscall __NR_umount2. *shrug* I'm not a kernel hacker, their ways are a
  mystery to me.)

A quick way to fix this for Debian would be to check for defined(__ia64__)
in umount.S and umount2.S, although I doubt upstream would like this.

In the IA-64 case, an extern symbol for umount also still needs generating
somehow, maybe by adding a trivial ia64/umount.c which implements it as
a call to umount2 (upstream would probably prefer it in assembler, but I
don't speak fluent assembler).

I attach a proof-of-concept patch. I haven't tested it with util-vserver,
but it compiles on merulo, and the resulting dietlibc.a contains exactly one
definition each for umount and umount2.

Regards,
Simon

Bug#510018: [awn-applets-python-core] battery plugin shows No batteries

2008-12-28 Thread David Paleino
Package: awn-applets-python-core
Version: 0.3~bzr912-1
Severity: serious

(severity serious because this applet is not really usable for me, :) )

Hi,
upgrading to experimental's awn made the Battery applet show the no batteries
tooltip. It worked in 0.2.6-4.

Reading the code, it seems like 0.3~bzr912 is using Hal, while 0.2.6 directly
used DBus and os.popen(acpi -V). I don't have hal installed, that's why (I
suppose, I did not have the chance to restart awn yet) it doesn't work anymore.

I'm trying to foreport (:)) the DBus approach to 0.3 (adding a DBusBackend
class to the code), but I haven't been successful yet.

Please prod upstream for re-inclusion of such low-level processing :)

Thank you,
David

Bug#503712: the gs-common problem

2008-12-28 Thread Thomas Viehmann
Thomas Viehmann wrote:
So this is how an NMU choosing the include hack in .config route would
 look like.
I'm not quite convinced that this is actually better than having
ghosscript depend on gs-common, gs-common not depend on ghostscript-x
and checking the reverse (build-)depends for breakage.
So build logs for (all but the one contrib) reverse build depends are
at[1]. All seem to succeed, two seem to build-depend indirectly
ghostscript-x (via transfig via gs-gpl, latex-mk via transfig).
I'll check the debs somewhat, too, but if we think that ghostscript
depending on gs-common and living with the circular depends solves the
problem, this might be a more conservative way to fix this for lenny.
Two maintainers of reverse dependencies have replied already that their
packages don't need ghostscript-x, leaving one with some breakage potential.

Given that there are two possible vectors with more-or-less
ready-to-upload packages, we should want to decide this soonish.
I'm leaning towards the dependency change a bit. Note that ghostscript
seems to be the only package conflicting with gs-common.

Kind regards

T.

Bug#509879: NMU for azureus

2008-12-28 Thread David Paleino
Hello Shawn,
do you plan fixing #509878 and #509878? I can prepare a NMU if you don't have
time.
Also, I saw that debian/control lists azureus and vuze: wouldn't it be
better to make azureus a transitional dummy package depending on vuze, and make
vuze be the real package? Currently vuze only has:

$ apt-file list vuze
vuze: /usr/share/doc/vuze/changelog.Debian.gz
vuze: /usr/share/doc/vuze/copyright
$

And azureus is not a separate tool, AFAICS, to justify two binary packages (and
one just containing useless docs)

Kindly,
David

Bug#503712: the gs-common problem

2008-12-28 Thread Thomas Viehmann
As promised on IRC, the only way to end the madness of my mails on the
subject is to either say no, no dependency funnies, we want .config
hacks or fixing dependencies is better than .config hacks, or
something entirely different, so here is some more data:

Thomas Viehmann wrote:
I'll check the debs somewhat, too, but if we think that ghostscript
depending on gs-common and living with the circular depends solves the
problem, this might be a more conservative way to fix this for lenny.

Using debdiff, the only file differences (aside from a few shlibs bumps,
ordering, and minor size differences, the control fields matched up) are
- one pdf in one package (geda-symbols) changed the paper format and
then dropped below the compression threshold (building in a chroot?),
- the doc package of log4c had a couple of more symlinked manpages,
apparently due to changes in the manpage generating tex file.

So IMO dropping ghostscript-x from gs-common build-deps looks reasonably
safe as in not changing anything rebuild-wise.

Kind regards

Bug#510030: xterm: DECRQSS and comments

2008-12-28 Thread Paul Szabo
Package: xterm
Version: 222-1etch2
Severity: grave
Tags: security patch
Justification: user security hole

DECRQSS Device Control Request Status String DCS $ q simply echoes
(responds with) invalid commands. For example,
perl -e 'print \eP\$q\nbad-command\n\e\\'
would run bad-command.

Exploitability is the same as for the window title reporting issue
in DSA-380: include the DCS string in an email message to the victim,
or arrange to have it in syslog to be viewed by root.

The attached patch should fix the problem.

---

The default allowWindowOps is false (as should be), but the man page
says the default is true. The man page should also mention that turning
it on is a security risk, to avoid regression e.g. as per
http://bugs.debian.org/384593
http://www.debian.org/security/2003/dsa-380
and also the much older
http://www.maths.usyd.edu.au/u/psz/securedu.html#xterm
(and private message to xterm maintainers on 9 Mar 2000, seems only
grep PSz main.c remains).

---

Ubuntu still allows window title reporting, and is vulnerable to
perl -e 'print \e\]0;;bad-command;\a\e\[21t'

---

I wonder whether the following are handled and/or dangerous:
set X property perl -e 'print \e\]3;XTerm.vt100.allowWindowOps=1\e\\'
set, get font perl -e 'print \e\]50;bad-command\e\\,\e\]50;?\e\\'
UDK setting perl -e 'print \eP1;1|17/0a6261642d636f6d6d616e640a\e\\'
then trick user to press F key, or
perl -e 'print \eP+q584b5f434f4c524f53\e\\'

Nicola,

Such indentation is allowed by the XML standard, so if any of tools you
use don't accept such XML, then probably your tools are broken.

Downgrading to wishlist and retitling: this is not a RC-bug for sure.

2008-12-28 Thread Sune Vuorela
Package: runit
Version: 2.0.0-1

Runit does cat/sed magic on /etc/inittab on installation and removal.

  echo 'Adding SV inittab entry...'
  cp /etc/inittab /etc/inittab'{new}'
  cat /etc/inittab'{new}' -\EOT
#-- runit begin
SV:123456:respawn:/usr/sbin/runsvdir-start
#-- runit end
EOT
  mv -f /etc/inittab'{new}' /etc/inittab

from postinst
and

  echo 'Removing SV inittab entry...'
  rm -f /etc/inittab'{new}'
  sed -e '/#-- runit begin/,/#-- runit end/d' \
/etc/inittab /etc/inittab'{new}'
  mv -f /etc/inittab'{new}' /etc/inittab

in postrm.

it looks like a clear violation of 10.4.7.

and by the way, postinst also uses plain stdout to communicate with the
user, not debconf.

I don't recall it ever being removed during the review process, and if
it had been I would have expected the man page to be an issue in the

Bug#502140: cannot unlock after update libpam-0g, libpam-modules, libpam-keyring

This bug report is that a screensaver running before the upgrade cannot be
unlocked after the upgrade. Is this the problem you're having? If you're
unable to unlock a screensaver that was started after the upgrade, then
you're hitting some other bug than this one.

You may want to check the permissions on /etc/shadow; recent behavior
changes in the Debian PAM packages have exposed issues when users have set
non-default /etc/shadow permissions.

subdownloader package is in Debian since a day. Upstream is providing

Package: dpkg
Severity: important

Hi,

as I've already written to t...@dpkg.org I figured that dpkgs behaviour
when conffiles are conflicting is somewhat broken. To cite the original
mail:

On Tue, 2008-12-09 at 13:19:30 +0100, Patrick Schoenfeld wrote:
 What I figured is that:
If Package A contains the conffile /etc/foobar and Package B contains
another conffile /etc/foobar and noone of the packages diverts the file
or has a Replaces field set in control, the configuration file is silently
replaced by the package that is installed last in installation order.
In effect the dpkg -L output for the first installed package does not
 contain the file anymore.

What I expected is that on installation of Package B a warning would
have been issued that Package B tries to replace a (configuration) file
which also belongs to another Package A (and that the installation would
fail). Just like it is for normal files in the package. From my point of
view this _is_ the right behaviour.

Best Regards,
Patrick

Bug#509030: xfce4-terminal: Window decoration are not drawn even when enabled

That seems to fix the problem.

This RC bug seems to of been brought to ground with two workarounds logged in
the report.

Given the work todate, what is the proposed conclusion for this bug for lenny?

1. Downgrade to normal/ important - leave open as a record of the issue,
and/
or

2. Upgrade neomagic package to force NoAccel/ XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS and
close bug?

Bug#510043: trash-cli: Completely broken under XFCE

Brandon,

Thanks for your bug report.

However I am unable to reproduce, with either XFCE nor via a vanilla CLI.

In your subject you state it is broken under XFCE, why do you suspect XFCE as
trash-cli is a CLI and doesn't use any GUI features at all and thus I suspect
XFCE isn't the culprit.

Can you reproduce with any other window manager, or with a vanilla cli?

Versions of packages trash-cli depends on:
 ii python2.4.4-6An interactive
 ii python-support0.7.7 automated rebuild

These are quite old and not the current lenny versions:
ii python 2.5.2-2An interactive high-level
ii python-support 0.8.4 automated rebuilding

Could you upgrade your system to lenny versions of these packages and report
back if that resolves your issue.

Also I suspect the severity of the bug report is too high, but I will leave
that to the maintainer to adjust.

Thanks,
Mark
