Juho, could you strip down your rsyslog.conf step by step (i.e. first remove
 the
remote logging, then the $ActionQueue* directives, then the imklog plugin,

the different rules), which will help us to narrow down this bug.

Actually it's Juha... ;)

Well anyway, I reverted back to the original version without
additional debugging information and I removed remote logging. Let's
see if I still get those crashes.

Juha

Bug#510902: Missing security updates - version 2.0.0.20 available from upstream

2009-01-14 Thread bugtrac...@slideomania.com
Hi,

any news on this one? I consider Iceweasel to be a major desktop application,
but the courrent version now lacks a security update since about a month.

Or is Debian dropping support for the 2.0 branch of Iceweasel, like Mozilla
recently did with the release of 2.0.0.20[1]? If so, I think there should be
some official announcement.

Have a nice day.

Bug#509292: rsyslog: random crashes with remote logging

Why do you suspect that the $AllowedSender fix might have an influence on
 this?

I don't suspect it has - I was wrong ;) I think I was too-focussed on
the quad core issue that I didn't even read the config correctly. I
thought the crashes happened on the server. I now need to reevaluate the
material - or maybe it is simpler if I just follow what happens now.

Then we have the random crashes on the client (tracked as #509292). Juho's
rsyslog.conf is at [1]. The only clue so far is, that it is related to multi
core machines (= 4 cores). I'm not convinced that it is related to remote
 logging.
Juho, could you strip down your rsyslog.conf step by step (i.e. first remove

I'd actually start with removing the $ActionQueue* directives, as they
cause additional asynchronizity. But the important thing is it first get
back to a state where we can (somewhat) reliably reproduce the bug. I
think we should see at least 3 aborts in a row before we do any changes.
The reason is that we otherwise do not know if the config changed caused
the situation to improve or that was just a random non-abort. That's the
issue I have run into all time so far...

Bug#511756: ghc6 includes a copy of GMP, with GNU docs, with non-free GFDL docs

2009-01-14 Thread Kari Pahula
I have a problem.

I found a copy of GMP included with ghc6, with GNU documentation with
GFDL docs with invariant sections.

The usual thing to do would be to repackage the upstream tarball and
slap on a +dfsg1 on the version. However, that would make it
necessary to rebuild all haskell libraries since they all have a
dependency ghc6 ( 6.8.2+).

Argh. Not a transition I'd like to see at this point. Is there some
route to just replace ghc6_6.8.2.orig.tar.gz with one that didn't have
gmp-4.2.1.tar.gz in it? That shouldn't make anything FTBFS or
anything. Other than that, as much as I hate to suggest it, could we
use lenny-ignore for #511756?

Just my 2 cents:
Maybe, 6.8.2dfsg1? This is ( 6.8.2+) according to dpkg --compare-versions.

Well, that's a relief! That's what I'll do, then. Thank you very
much.

That'll still leave a few libraries that have ghc6 ( 6.8.2-999),
but those should be fixable with simple binNMUs. Already much more
manageable.

Sorry about that. The patch from me is kinda on hold atm as the maintainer
is preparing a whole new package with more fixes in it. I still need to find
out the exact situation, though.

Thanks for catching this!

Bug#502444: sshd fails at boot-time following reload by /etc/network/if-up.d/openssh-server presumably due to race condition

2009-01-14 Thread Kevin Price
Thanks Colin, that was really 'sharpish' !

Version 5.1p1-5 works fine, as expected. After compiling it for amd64 and
purging/reinstalling, I rebooted several times just to make sure. Let's
hope this change will make it into lenny.

I wouldn't be too concerned about any performance loss caused by 'restart'
rather than reload. I'm curious if upstream/openBSD has anything like
debian's /etc/network/if-up.d/openssh-server script, and how they solved
this issue.

All the best!

Bug#511797: bind9: all queries denied since last update

2009-01-14 Thread root
Package: bind9
Version: 1:9.3.4-2etch4
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

Since th last upgrade made yesterday, I noticed that many packages were not or
bad working.
For example, horde3 webmail, whois nslookup and dig commands.
It's also impossible to browse through internet as the urls aren't resolved
anymore.
Even reportbug doesn't work by default as it tries to get BTS reports and it
cannot resolve it, I had to use --no-query-bts option to send this report.

I don't know what to do as there isn't any changelog info concerning this
package : it doesn't appear in
http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/b/bind9/
there's only the previous bind9_9.3.4-2etch3 (which worked very welle for me)
and the one under current is bind9 (1:9.5.0.dfsg.P2-5.1)

I would like to know what has changed in the new release which could have
broken my system

thanks

Bug#511708: aptitude: [etch upgrade] TUI consistently blocks after doing one set of operations

On Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 08:28:21PM +0200, Eddy Petrișor
eddy.petri...@gmail.com was heard to say:
I just upgraded this system yesterday to Debian Lenny from Debian Etch
and since the upgrade I have seen that aptitude's TUI interface blocks
after any set of operations that is done with dpkg. When the operation
finishes the TUI is unusable and you need to ctrl+C the interface to
 get the prompt.

What architecture are you running on? Is this a single or a multi-core
machine? Just for kicks, if you install aptitude-dbg and valgrind, then
run valgrind --log-file=/tmp/aptitude.grind, can you still reproduce
the problem? (warning: this will be very slow)

Bug#511596: Acknowledgement (empathy: won't connect to (at least) gtalk)

2009-01-14 Thread Ivan Vučica
severity #511596 important
retitle #511596 Won't connect with network-manager disconnected or stopped
thanks

I have tracked the problem down to me having network-manager installed, but
not using it. I have written my own script to connect to faculty wireless
network since I found network-manager to be misbehaving.

In any case:

empathy_idle_set_presence: NM not connected

It is apparent this affects only a small number of users (either you use
n-m, or you have it uninstalled): for this reason, I'll take the honor of
reducing severity to important. I still don't find it deserves normal,
since it DOES affect users.

I have n-m installed just-in-case I need something, but I don't find it
particularly reliable. Ergo, I use my own script. And then, although I am
connected to wlan, just because n-m thinks I'm not, empathy also refuses to
connect. Same thing happens if I /etc/init.d/network-manager stop.

This was already encountered by some users, but apparently not perceived as
important by upstream[1] since it uses network manager only if you have it
installed.

It was succesful on one of the buildds (and got uploaded) and failed
on the other. And I see no reason why it should fail on the other.

I can only assume either the buildd chroot isn't clean or it's some
kernel issue. The buildd with the problem is running a 2.6.26 kernel.

The rationale for still using iceape-dev is that xpcom components would
still need to run properly under iceape. For that to be possible, they
have to be compiled under gecko 1.8, which only iceape provides. If we
remove iceape, we don't care about this compatibility anymore.

On the other hand, not all applications necessarily have been updated
upstream to properly build against gecko 1.9.

originately seemed similar to the Xen case.

Having followed the situation closely, I can say that the latter was mostly

 I disagree.

I was at the time employed by Canonical and I was the person who was
at that time responsible for most of the changes which had been made
to Ubuntu's Firefox compared to Debian's, so I should know.

I don't want to be rude about my previous employer of course, but you
shouldn't set much store by the various public pronouncements made at
 the time.

When I talked to the Mozilla folks about it, they made it very clear that
relicensing the logo was out of the question. They might have been open to
negotiating other things, like which kind of modifications are allowed, etc,
but I have no doubt that the logo is the big stumbling block.

This leads me to believe that, if we had kept using the non-free logo, our
set of Debian-specific changes to the package would have been a non-issue,
or at least a minor one.

But of course, I can't prove any of that. So make of it what you wish :-)

On ARMEL, the mono jit fails at runtime with an illegal instruction
exception. Unfortunately, I don't have a log of this happening since
I came across it while trying to rebuild mono with both the
architecture specific packages as well as the arch all packages.

This is an issue that has bneen found and addressed in mono 2.0

I am attaching a patch I applied to the Debian source package which
has implemented the specific fix for this issue. I do think that the
mono revision 121457 should also be fixed.
 http://anonsvn.mono-project.com/viewvc?view=revrevision=121457

Thanks for your investigation in this matter, but the patch you provided
is broken, it contains unhandled rejected code blocks.

As this issue is only present with non-debian kernels, this doesn't
make it RC, thus downgrading to important.

I will try to backport the mentioned revisions and upload a -6 revision
of mono if I am successful.

 non-free, isn't it?

 $grep -A 4 modify /usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/latex/bibleref/bibleref.sty

%% If you modify this file, you must change its name first.
%% You are NOT ALLOWED to distribute this file alone. You are NOT
%% ALLOWED to take money for the distribution or use of either this
%% file or a changed version, except for a nominal charge for copying
 %% etc.

The version in TeXLive has indeed a non-free license text. Meanwhile,
upstream has relicensed the package under the LPPL 1.3, but AFAICS this
only applies to the new version.

Sorry about that. I didn't notice that I had left the reject files that I had
fixed/reverted behind in the patch.

Attached is a new patch that only affects the intended files.

Feel free to use this, or a new patch of your own work. Ideally the other fix
in svn that fixes the use of the flush_icache function should also probably
be fixed for code generation correctness, but it involves significantly more
work in the changes in the tramp-arm.c file since there has been a lot more
changes between the 1.9+patches version packaged in Debian and the released
mono 2.0.

Thanks for your bugreport!

That recent change to netatalk should not affect how it interacts with
the kernel. I suspect that what triggered this bug was not changes to
netatalk but instead simply that _any_ package update will restart
daemons and (if not loaded already) request the appletalk kernel
module to be loaded.

Netatalk interacts with the kernel through the Linux module appletalk
provided by the Linux kernel, so I believe that kernel panics would be
a bug in the Linux kernel package, so reassigning.

Kind regards,

Bug#511852: xnecview: Error in parameters

2009-01-14 Thread Fernando M. Maresca
Package: xnecview
Version: 1.35-5
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Trying to use xnecview with several files I'm getting GW errors like
these:

Error in parameters: GW 1 11 0.-1. 0.000 0.0 1.
  0.000.00667

Error in parameters: GW 2 11 -.7527-1.0753 0.-.7527 1.0753

So I get the sample file logper.nec from xnecview web site, located at:
http://wwwhome.cs.utwente.nl/~ptdeboer/ham/xnecview/logper.nec
which is refered in the packacge documentation. The .nec file GW cards
looks like:
GW 1 11 0.-1. 0.000 0.0 1.0.000 .00667
GW 2 11 -.7527-1.0753 0.-.75271.07530..00717
GW 3 11 -1.562-1.1562 0.-1.5621.15620..00771

I can get the files processed by nec2c.

Let me know if I can provide other info.

Thanks a lot,

No, it doesn't, at least if you don't fiddle blindly with the
 build-dependencies.

Thanks for closing this false bug report, Thomas.

To the bug reporter: we thank you for your time in reporting the problem
but, please, next time try to be sure that the problem actually regards the
Debian package and not the Ubuntu one. Debian maintainers are not
necessarily concerned by problems in the derived Ubuntu packages. In the
present case, the MOTU Developers inadvertently bumped the build-dependency
from octave2.1 to octave3.0.

This makes me think about what should be done as regards this package
post-lenny. It doesn't seem to have any sign of upstream development since
ages (well, at least since four years) and octave2.1 will be dropped from
squeeze. Should we try to port the package to octave3.0 or simply drop it
also?

on the other. And I see no reason why it should fail on the other.

Is it possible to try a second time on the same buildd to see if the
problem is random or systematic? As the debug symbols were not included,
the given stack trace is really useless.

I can only assume either the buildd chroot isn't clean or it's some
kernel issue. The buildd with the problem is running a 2.6.26 kernel.

Or it may be a register allocator non deterministic issue. I had such an
issue for sparc : one time out of three, the compiler could not rebuild
itself. May be this one is similar.

Cheers,
Mazen,

Bug#511843: bibleref: Please update to newer version, relicensed under DFSG-free license

The version in TeXLive has indeed a non-free license text. Meanwhile,
upstream has relicensed the package under the LPPL 1.3, but AFAICS this
only applies to the new version.

That is a pain. I generally don't want to blacklist anything that has
been relicensed in later version.

I don't know what to do. Either we add a license statement for the
upgraded version and let it be, or we replace the version currently in
the orig.tar.gz with the one from TL upstream (I checked, only minimal
changes in the sty file), or we blacklist it and re-add it for 2008.

Suggestions?

All failed attempts where on the same buildd host. So I assume
it's something related to that host and not the package.

I will try and take a closer look in the weekend.

Well, since it seems to be in the interest of the upstream author to
have this package relicensed and distributed I'd say: add a comment to
README.Debian about a changed version in future versions and don't
blacklist bibleref.
Sure, this isn't exactly correct but I *think* it's in best interest of
all, users as well as author.

Package: avahi
Version: 0.6.23-2
Severity: serious

The new avahi versions try to move the start scripts to a later point in
the boot process. This is done by first removing all runlevel
configuration, then readding it. Thus, the user configuration is
removed. This violates Debian policy, common sense and decency. A
possible fix would be an extension of the update-rc.d interface.

Hi,

I've been checking packages to see if they properly check the return
value of some of the functions in openssl. In
src/plugins/crypto/openssl/crypto_openssl.c there is this piece of code:
rc = EVP_VerifyFinal(ectx, (unsigned char *) signature,
sig_size, (EVP_PKEY *) key);
if (!rc)
rc = SLURM_ERROR;
else
rc = SLURM_SUCCESS;

But EVP_VerifyFinal() can also return -1 on errors. A good way to check
the value would be something like:
if (rc = 0)

I have no idea if this code is being used and what the consequences
of this might be.

Bug#510564: Bug correct and patch submitted for upstream (in #511744)

2009-01-14 Thread Tim Richardson
I am not confident of doing force merge to merge 510564 and
511744,

I think 511744 should be the lead bug report. It is now assigned
to libsmbclient with a patch pending upstream review, but it is
only serverity important.

Bug#511708: aptitude: [etch upgrade] TUI consistently blocks after doing one set of operations

  eddy.petri...@gmail.com was heard to say:
I just upgraded this system yesterday to Debian Lenny from Debian Etch
and since the upgrade I have seen that aptitude's TUI interface blocks
after any set of operations that is done with dpkg. When the operation
finishes the TUI is unusable and you need to ctrl+C the interface to
  get the prompt.

What architecture are you running on? Is this a single or a multi-core

Err, I meant to add that info, too, sorry about that.

 Arch is i386, dual core.

machine? Just for kicks, if you install aptitude-dbg and valgrind, then
run valgrind --log-file=/tmp/aptitude.grind, can you still reproduce
the problem? (warning: this will be very slow)

I'll try this tomorrow when I get at work (that's where the machine is).

Something that would be even better if you can manage it would be to
use hg bisect. This will be time-consuming, but has the potential to
track down exactly what's happening, or at least what change triggered
it. The one time I was able to (very briefly) reproduce this I tried
running valgrind and gdb, but without getting anywhere.

If this is too much work for you that's OK -- these instructions
might help other people track it down. Heck, I can even post them on
my blog. Can't hurt.

(why didn't I do this before? I only thought of using bisect while
I was walking to work this morning. D'oh!!)

I don't know what version previously worked for you, but etch has
0.4.4-4, so let's try that.

# aptitude
$ hg clone http://hg.debian.org/hg/aptitude/head aptitude
$ cd aptitude
$ hg bisect --bad
$ hg bisect --good 0.4.4
Testing changeset 1105:083027d51594 (1098 changesets remaining, ~10 tests)
256 files updated, 0 files merged, 78 files removed, 0 files unresolved

  Then repeat these steps:

$ ./autogen.sh  ./configure  make
# ./aptitude
  (try to reproduce the problem)

After each attempt, if you can reproduce it, tell Mercurial that the
version is buggy by runnning:

$ hg bisect --bad

If not, tell Mercurial that it isn't buggy by running:

$ hg bisect --good

If you can't compile the program, or if it's too broken for you to
test it, run:

$ hg bisect --skip

It should take around 10 tries, more if you're lucky. Then it'll
print a changeset out:

The first bad revision is:

Bah. There have been too many toolchain changes over the last three
years. You can do this, but it'll be a real pain. At the very least
you need to use g++ 4.2 and pass --disable-werror. Then, there's the
fact that the very first revision that bisect picks requires a version
of cwidget that no longer exists in Debian...

Probably no point in trying to post this to my blog -- hardly anyone
would be able to follow the instructions that I'd have to give. Anyway,
obviously I would be happy if you could hunt this down, but it's beyond
the scope of what I usually ask bug reporters to try, so I'll understand
if you don't pursue this approach.

FWIW: I'm ok with backporting this to the current version in Lenny.

Lenny should not be without it, good point. My comment referred to my
  preference to use a
newer upstream version and keep the Debian packaging bits as simple as
  possible.

The changes are quite simple, I have this on a local branch, and
planning to merge it with master. I did not change anything on the
Debian packaging, just add a new patch that quilt manage like a breeze.

this changes are now merged on master.

Cheers.

That (with a build-dep fix) works. (But I of course won't upload that
