Bug#510902: Missing security updates - version 2.0.0.20 available from upstream
Hi, any news on this one? I consider Iceweasel to be a major desktop application, but the courrent version now lacks a security update since about a month. Or is Debian dropping support for the 2.0 branch of Iceweasel, like Mozilla recently did with the release of 2.0.0.20[1]? If so, I think there should be some official announcement. Have a nice day. hk47 [1] no offical announcemment at hand, so Wikipedia must be enough: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Firefox#Release_history http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Firefox#cite_note-43 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#509292: rsyslog: random crashes with remote logging
On Wed, 2009-01-14 at 08:40 +0100, Michael Biebl wrote: I don't think the $AllowedSender directive has any influence on the crashes Juho experiences on his rsyslog clients (as he only used those directive on the rsyslog server). Why do you suspect that the $AllowedSender fix might have an influence on this? I don't suspect it has - I was wrong ;) I think I was too-focussed on the quad core issue that I didn't even read the config correctly. I thought the crashes happened on the server. I now need to reevaluate the material - or maybe it is simpler if I just follow what happens now. Then we have the random crashes on the client (tracked as #509292). Juho's rsyslog.conf is at [1]. The only clue so far is, that it is related to multi core machines (= 4 cores). I'm not convinced that it is related to remote logging. Juho, could you strip down your rsyslog.conf step by step (i.e. first remove the remote logging, then the $ActionQueue* directives, then the imklog plugin, then the different rules), which will help us to narrow down this bug. I'd actually start with removing the $ActionQueue* directives, as they cause additional asynchronizity. But the important thing is it first get back to a state where we can (somewhat) reliably reproduce the bug. I think we should see at least 3 aborts in a row before we do any changes. The reason is that we otherwise do not know if the config changed caused the situation to improve or that was just a random non-abort. That's the issue I have run into all time so far... Bug#511756: ghc6 includes a copy of GMP, with GNU docs, with non-free GFDL docs
I have a problem. I found a copy of GMP included with ghc6, with GNU documentation with GFDL docs with invariant sections. The usual thing to do would be to repackage the upstream tarball and slap on a +dfsg1 on the version. However, that would make it necessary to rebuild all haskell libraries since they all have a dependency ghc6 ( 6.8.2+). Argh. Not a transition I'd like to see at this point. Is there some route to just replace ghc6_6.8.2.orig.tar.gz with one that didn't have gmp-4.2.1.tar.gz in it? That shouldn't make anything FTBFS or anything. Other than that, as much as I hate to suggest it, could we use lenny-ignore for #511756? signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#502444: sshd fails at boot-time following reload by /etc/network/if-up.d/openssh-server presumably due to race condition
Thanks Colin, that was really 'sharpish' ! Version 5.1p1-5 works fine, as expected. After compiling it for amd64 and purging/reinstalling, I rebooted several times just to make sure. Let's hope this change will make it into lenny. I wouldn't be too concerned about any performance loss caused by 'restart' rather than reload. I'm curious if upstream/openBSD has anything like debian's /etc/network/if-up.d/openssh-server script, and how they solved this issue. Package: bind9 Version: 1:9.3.4-2etch4 Severity: critical Justification: breaks unrelated software Since th last upgrade made yesterday, I noticed that many packages were not or bad working. For example, horde3 webmail, whois nslookup and dig commands. It's also impossible to browse through internet as the urls aren't resolved anymore. Bug#511708: aptitude: [etch upgrade] TUI consistently blocks after doing one set of operations
On Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 08:28:21PM +0200, Eddy Petrișor eddy.petri...@gmail.com was heard to say: I just upgraded this system yesterday to Debian Lenny from Debian Etch and since the upgrade I have seen that aptitude's TUI interface blocks after any set of operations that is done with dpkg. When the operation finishes the TUI is unusable and you need to ctrl+C the interface to get the prompt. What architecture are you running on? Is this a single or a multi-core machine? Just for kicks, if you install aptitude-dbg and valgrind, then run valgrind --log-file=/tmp/aptitude.grind, can you still reproduce the problem? Bug#511596: Acknowledgement (empathy: won't connect to (at least) gtalk)
severity #511596 important retitle #511596 Won't connect with network-manager disconnected or stopped thanks I have tracked the problem down to me having network-manager installed, but not using it. I have written my own script to connect to faculty wireless network since I found network-manager to be misbehaving. In any case: empathy_idle_set_presence: NM not connected It is apparent this affects only a small number of users (either you use n-m, or you have it uninstalled): for this reason, I'll take the honor of reducing severity to important. I still don't find it deserves normal, since it DOES affect users. I have n-m installed just-in-case I need something, but I don't find it particularly reliable. Ergo, I use my own script. And then, although I am connected to wlan, just because n-m thinks I'm not, empathy also refuses to connect. Same thing happens if I /etc/init.d/network-manager stop. This was already encountered by some users, but apparently not perceived as important by upstream[1] since it uses network manager only if you have it installed. The rationale for still using iceape-dev is that xpcom components would still need to run properly under iceape. For that to be possible, they have to be compiled under gecko 1.8, which only iceape provides. If we remove iceape, we don't care about this compatibility anymore. On the other hand, not all applications necessarily have been updated upstream to properly build against gecko 1.9. This second issue originately seemed similar to the Xen case. Having followed the situation closely, I can say that the latter was mostly an excuse. Just look at the package in Ubuntu. They make all the changes they need, and they are able to provide security support. The big difference is they keep the non-free logo. I disagree. I was at the time employed by Canonical and I was the person who was at that time responsible for most of the changes which had been made to Ubuntu's Firefox compared to Debian's, so I should know. I don't want to be rude about my previous employer of course, but you shouldn't set much store by the various public pronouncements made at the time. When I talked to the Mozilla folks about it, they made it very clear that relicensing the logo was out of the question. They might have been open to negotiating other things, like which kind of modifications are allowed, etc, but I have no doubt that the logo is the big stumbling block. This leads me to believe that, if we had kept using the non-free logo, our set of Debian-specific changes to the package would have been a non-issue, or at least a minor one. But of course, I can't prove any of that. So make of it what you wish :-) -- Robert Millan The DRM opt-in fallacy: Your data belongs to us. Bug#511846: netatalk: kernel panic after package update to 2.0.3-11+lenny1 amd64
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 reassign 511846 linux-2.6 thanks On Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 09:39:43PM +, Vladimir Komendantsky wrote: I'm sorry to tell you that today's package update made my system unbootable. The problem was with the package netatalk which was starting services at boot time. This resulted in a kernel panic. To repair this I booted the system in a single-user mode and removed netatalk and a few packages recommended by it but which I didn't use. Thanks for your bugreport! That recent change to netatalk should not affect how it interacts with the kernel. I suspect that what triggered this bug was not changes to netatalk but instead simply that _any_ package update will restart daemons and (if not loaded already) request the appletalk kernel module to be loaded. Netatalk interacts with the kernel through the Linux module appletalk provided by the Linux kernel, so I believe that kernel panics would be a bug in the Linux kernel package, so reassigning. Thanks for closing this false bug report, Thomas. To the bug reporter: we thank you for your time in reporting the problem but, please, next time try to be sure that the problem actually regards the Debian package and not the Ubuntu one. Debian maintainers are not necessarily concerned by problems in the derived Ubuntu packages. In the present case, the MOTU Developers inadvertently bumped the build-dependency from octave2.1 to octave3.0. This makes me think about what should be done as regards this package post-lenny. It doesn't seem to have any sign of upstream development since ages (well, at least since four years) and octave2.1 will be dropped from squeeze. In src/plugins/crypto/openssl/crypto_openssl.c there is this piece of code: rc = EVP_VerifyFinal(ectx, (unsigned char *) signature, sig_size, (EVP_PKEY *) key); if (!rc) rc = SLURM_ERROR; else rc = SLURM_SUCCESS; But EVP_VerifyFinal() can also return -1 on errors. Bug#511708: aptitude: [etch upgrade] TUI consistently blocks after doing one set of operations

Just for kicks, if you install aptitude-dbg and valgrind, then run valgrind --log-file=/tmp/aptitude.grind, can you still reproduce the problem? (warning: this will be very slow) I'll try this tomorrow when I get at work (that's where the machine is). Something that would be even better if you can manage it would be to use hg bisect. This will be time-consuming, but has the potential to track down exactly what's happening, or at least what change triggered it. The one time I was able to (very briefly) reproduce this I tried running valgrind and gdb, but without getting anywhere. If this is too much work for you that's OK -- these instructions might help other people track it down. Heck, I can even post them on my blog. Can't hurt. (why didn't I do this before? I only thought of using bisect while I was walking to work this morning. D'oh!!) I don't know what version previously worked for you, but etch has 0.4.4-4, so let's try that. # aptitude $ hg clone http://hg.debian.org/hg/aptitude/head aptitude $ cd aptitude $ hg bisect --bad $ hg bisect --good 0.4.4 Testing changeset 1105:083027d51594 (1098 changesets remaining, ~10 tests) 256 files updated, 0 files merged, 78 files removed, 0 files unresolved Then repeat these steps: $ ./autogen.sh ./configure make # ./aptitude (try to reproduce the problem) After each attempt, if you can reproduce it, tell Mercurial that the version is buggy by runnning: $ hg bisect --bad If not, tell Mercurial that it isn't buggy by running: $ hg bisect --good If you can't compile the program, or if it's too broken for you to test it, run: $ hg bisect --skip It should take around 10 tries, more if you're lucky. Then it'll print a changeset out: The first bad revision is: changeset: 1446:d2da6ae09bd3 parent: 1436:9db554d44e20 parent: 1435:78895fdf40d7 user:Christian Perrier bubu...@debian.org date:Sat Apr 12 09:00:07 2008 +0200 summary: Merging changes to fr.po Send me the changeset information Mercurial gives you. Bug#511708: aptitude: [etch upgrade] TUI consistently blocks after doing one set of operations
On Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 08:47:34PM -0800, Daniel Burrows dburr...@debian.org was heard to say: Something that would be even better if you can manage it would be to use hg bisect. This will be time-consuming, but has the potential to track down exactly what's happening, or at least what change triggered it. The one time I was able to (very briefly) reproduce this I tried running valgrind and gdb, but without getting anywhere. Bah. There have been too many toolchain changes over the last three years. You can do this, but it'll be a real pain. At the very least you need to use g++ 4.2 and pass --disable-werror. Then, there's the fact that the very first revision that bisect picks requires a version of cwidget that no longer exists in Debian... Probably no point in trying to post this to my blog -- hardly anyone would be able to follow the instructions that I'd have to give. Anyway, obviously I would be happy if you could hunt this down, but it's beyond the scope of what I usually ask bug reporters to try, so I'll understand if you don't pursue this approach. FWIW: I'm ok with backporting this to the current version in Lenny. Lenny should not be without it, good point. My comment referred to my preference to use a newer upstream version and keep the Debian packaging bits as simple as possible. The changes are quite simple, I have this on a local branch, and planning to merge it with master. I did not change anything on the Debian packaging, just add a new patch that quilt manage like a breeze. this changes are now merged on master.
