* Trent W. Buck | 2009-03-21 21:38:14 [+1100]: From IRC: kalikiana Regarding -fPIC, I don't really see how I could avoid it. kalikiana If somebody finds it wrong, I would really like to know an kalikiana alternative because it is needed for linking extensions. twb I looked at the Debian Policy manual again, and it says -fPIC twb *must* be used for libraries. ...which I assume also means twb extensions. But I don't know if -fPIC is supposed to also be twb used for apps themselves? I think maybe the guy I was talking to twb on #debian-mentors was confused, and meant you need a reason to twb *not* use -fPIC. kalikiana I also have a reason to not use it actually, which is that kalikiana for instance on x86-32 it makes the application slower. twb OK, Debian says that reason is not good enough for Debian. twb http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-files.html#s-libraries twb So for Debian I will just enable it always. Sorry for the twb confusion, I just haven't dealt with libraries before and I twb didn't understand any of the issues. The problem here is that it is not just a library. libkatze itself is a .a static library which is merged into midori and this is fine. But it is also merged into a few add-ons which are .so and that's where you need the -fPIC because now the static library becomes suddenly a shared library as well. Adding -fPIC to the whole build process is a bad idea please don't do that. My initial proposals where: - make libkatze a .so. midori and extension can link against that. = that one was NAKed by upstream because a new lib is not what he had in mind if I remember correctly. - add fPIC unconditional and use it while build ing libkatze (not always). = was NAKed by upstream because it is so much slower on x86_32. Now, we need special care for parisc and mips afaik. Other arches may follow once the offset are big enough. Maybe we could go the other way around and add -fPIC to libkatze unless it is x86_32? Package: uswsusp Version: 0.8-1.1+b1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable With 2.6.28 and 2.6.29-rc7 from experimental, s2disk doesn't work anymore as well as s2both; s2ram works well. After having run s2disk, screen become black with information Looking for splash image and no more activity. Can be run from a graphical terminal or from a console, same behaviour. After this, Ctrl-Alt-Fx doesn't work anymore, same for Ctrl-Alt-Del. Pressing once the on/off button plays the Window Manager error audio file, still nothing on the screen. Pressing Return make things going further: the led of HDD is blinking like it would go in hibernation. But after a while, nothing. A static version exists (libbfd.a), and packages should be using that AFAIK. Cc'ing -devel in case there’s a reason it should not be that way. If, on the contrary, nobody objects, I’ll file a wishlist against lintian so that an error (warning?) is emitted for packages that DT_NEED that library (and libopcodes/libiberty as well?) We assure the community that there will be no regressions in the progress made for freedom in the kernel distributed by Debian relative to the Sarge release in Etch and : 4. ... as long as we are legally allowed to do so, and the firmware is distributed upstream under a license that complies with the DFSG. Both of these restrictions are not respected by the current linux-2.6 source tarball, and the tg3 firmware driver in particular. The tg3 firmware was stripped from the sarge kernel, it is a non-free but redistributable binary blob, and this is thus a regression with regard to the sarge release. Secondly, the tg3 firmware licence is : * Firmware is: * Derived from proprietary unpublished source code, * Copyright (C) 2000-2003 Broadcom Corporation. * * Permission is hereby granted for the distribution of this firmware * data in hexadecimal or equivalent format, provided this copyright * notice is accompanying it. which would never pass the DFSG in any way. The licence clearly state it is a binary derived from unpublished source code, and neither the source code is available, nor is there any right of modification involved in it. It is astounding how, Steve Langasek as the lead RM, specifically asked for a GR on the subject in order to know how to act as RM, and then, even before the vote finished, claimed he would not respect it. Bug#510417: links2: silently accepts bad SSL certificates
* Neil Moore [Thu, 01 Jan 2009 11:57:35 -0500]: Package: links2 Version: 2.2-1 Severity: grave Tags: security Justification: user security hole Hello, Neil. I’m sorry I’m not mailing you to help solve this bug, since I’m not the maintainer of links2. I do release management in Debian, and I’m interested in knowing whether this bug affects 2.1pre37-1.1, which is currently in stable (and testing). Do you know if that is the case? Could you perhaps check? Thanks, Links2 does not validate certificates it receives; as a result, there is no warning that one is visiting a page with an expired certificate, a certificate not signed by a trusted authority, or a certificate for the wrong hostname. As a result, an attacker capable of intercepting one's packets can launch a man-in-the-middle attack to obtain account numbers, passwords, etc. At the very least, the documentation should prominently warn that links2's HTTPS support is not to be relied upon for sensitive information. Bug#521180: cdbs: DEB_PYTHON_MODULE_PACKAGE behavior changed unexpectedly
Package: cdbs Version: 0.4.53 Severity: grave Coin, Until 2008-03-17, at least, DEB_PYTHON_MODULE_PACKAGE was always defined with the following code: DEB_PYTHON_MODULE_PACKAGE = $(firstword $(filter-out %-doc %-dev %-common, $(DEB_PACKAGES))) and is now unset by default. I didn't find anything documenting this changes in the changelog or NEWS.Debian. This is problematic, as this breaks packages relying on this variable in the build rules, like in the 'balazar' package: build/$(DEB_PYTHON_MODULE_PACKAGE):: $(MANPAGES) Several package then FTBFS, thus the severity of this bug. It seems the 'cdbs_python_packages' variable could replace it, but the plural in the name suggest it would not. We could perhaps raise this problem on the mailing-list before changing or reverting the behavior again. Regards. P.S: i just checked the package in Lenny (0.4.52), before sending this mail, and it is happily not affected. -- Marc Dequènes (Duck) pgpkA091AU1kS.pgp Description: PGP Digital Signature

One can test for at least part of the problem with: https://i.broke.the.internet.and.all.i.got.was.this.t-shirt.phreedom.org/ (the URL from the dillo bug #510348). Bug#521185: libmyodbc: Creashes with symbol error
Package: libmyodbc Version: 3.51.15r409-4 Severity: grave Tags: patch Justification: renders package unusable When attempting to use replacable parameters, I see: /usr/lib/ghc-6.10.1/ghc: relocation error: /usr/lib/odbc/libmyodbc.so: symbol mysql_odbc_escape_string, version libmysqlclient_15 not defined in file libmysqlclient_r.so.15 with link time reference Upgrading to myodbc 5.1.5r1144 fixes the problem. I had reported bug #505938 with this problem last fall. It has been unfixed, and reassigned to a different package. I reported back then that a newer libmyodbc would fix the problem, and that continues to be the case. Regardless of whether there is a bug in libmysqlclient15off, I feel that there *is* a bug in how myodbc is working at present, one that is fixed by upgrading to a newer upstream version. So I have gone to the effort to package the newer upstream version, because myodbc is useless as it is in a great many situations. Bug#441490: patch to fix ivtools FTBFS #44190
( also Cc'ing Kari Pahula, who signalled an intent to adopt ivtools in http://bugs.debian.org/164800 ) On 03/24/2009 11:23 AM, Günter Geiger wrote: Thanks for the patch. You are right about the new upstream version, I should have done that a long time ago but I just can' t find the time to do so. Ivtools is up for adoption for several years already, so the way the things are now is that either someone takes over or we stay with the version we have. Would you object to an NMU to get the current version of the package building from source again? I'm afraid i don't have the bandwidth (or any specific need, knowledge or history with the upstream project) to adopt it myself. Or do you have plans to make 1.1.3-6 (folding in the various NMUs) soon? Thanks for your prompt response, --dkg signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

In fact it's already documented for years by upstream, and again detailled in his 'Februar 2009 comments'. This is incorrect, the old version cannot be reasonably interpreted to mean that a resolver running dnscache can be poisoned within 20 minutes. Since years the docs say 'tens of millions of guesses are adequate with a colliding attack;' With the 15000 packets/s assumption from Day you get to 22 minutes. I'd say it definitely can be 'reasonably interpreted' so. o Apply a patch to dbndns, the Debian fork of djbdns, that limits concurrent outgoing SOA queries to 20. I'm of the opinion that this makes the attack significantly harder. No, it doesn't. Any cache miss will do. There is just a slight inefficiency when you have to switch names to get the next round of cache misses. CVE-2008-4392 doesn't detail such an attack. Can you point to more details, a paper, or an implementation of this attack, that back up the claim? Specifically I doubt the 'slight inefficiency'. AFAIK from private discussion, the Debian security team doesn't agree with my assessment. I don't know what their plans are for stable. I still hope to get a better patch. While we wait for who knows how long, I suggest we get the fix for #518169 into stable; packages still are available through http://niequai.smarden.org/ruGho2e/ Regards, Gerrit. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#521198: php5-suhosin nulls mysql update parameters and allows update to continue
Package: php5-suhosin Version: 0.9.27-1 Severity: critical Justification: breaks unrelated software Suhosin nulls the parameters of a very large mysql update resulting in null values being submitted to the database, where data was expected. It seems more reasonable that Suhosin would instead kill the update queries if it considers them to be an attack. And log it so the admin can make appropriate changes. As it is, it is highly destructive, and not immediately apparent when suhosin is first installed/updated. It only appears later when the end-users generate a large enough update. A ticking time bomb for the database. This has been certainly more destructive to me in the last week, than any attack in the last 10 years. Until this is resolved I would suggest Suhosin be enabled in simulation mode by default. You are trying to build Herrie 2.1 against libSpiff 1.0.0. Due to an ABI and API break between libSpiff 0.8.4 and 1.0.0 this cannot work. The configure test hits this change: 0.8.4 int spiff_write(struct spiff_list *list, const char *filename); 1.0.0 int spiff_write(struct spiff_list *list, char const *filename, char const *baseuri); So to build Herrie 2.1 you can use libSpiff 0.8.4 at max. Herrie 2.2 compiles against libSpiff 1.0.0. Bug#514386: preliminary updated FireGPG packages available
People who may be interested in FireGPG in debian-- I'm not sure how much impetus there is to get firegpg back into the archive right now. But i'd like to see the tool get wider exposure where possible, and inclusion in debian could help that. After talking with Patrick Brunschwig (on enigm...@mozdev.org), Maximilien Cuony (on http://forum.getfiregpg.org), and Alexander Sack (on irc://irc.freenode.net/#ubuntu-mozillateam), I crafted some packages for the latest version of FireGPG (0.7.5). I want to thank the folks i spoke to for their valuable insights, which helped me a lot. Any mistakes in the packaging are all my own. These are preliminary packages; i'd love any review people can give. They make quite large changes to the packaging process, so i'd prefer to get feedback from Joao (the current maintainer, CC'ed here too) to see what he's interested in doing with them. My previous e-mails to Joao have gone unanswered, unfortuantely. Joao, i hope you're OK! The changelog entry from my packaging attempt says: * New Upstream Release: - updated to current gmail changes. - fixes writing cleartext and passphrases to temporary files (Closes: #514386) * dropped iceweasel- from package name; this should work with firefox also on systems which have firefox. Loosened dependency to include iceweasel | firefox (Closes: #489745) * minimized debian/rules * building xulrunner-ipc internally with custom makefiles. * switched to Architecture: any * bumped Standards-Version to 3.8.1 (no special changes needed) * turned off automatic updates by default. (Closes: #489889) You can find the source (and amd64 binaries) here (built against sid): http://lair.fifthhorseman.net/~dkg/src/firegpg/ Since FireGPG is not in the archive any longer, i don't consider this urgent. But if we want to provide this package in debian, i suspect something along these lines will be useful. And I'm willing to take over maintenance for the package, Joao, if you are considering orphaning it. Regards, --dkg PS another option for packaging would be to break out the ipc XPCOM component into its own package (asac had suggested packaging it as a simple extension, and making firegpg depend on it). If any other package in the archive needs this piece in the future (future versions of enigmail? a standalone XUL-based OpenPGP keyring management app?), we should probably consider splitting it out from the firegpg package; as it currently stands, it seemed simpler to keep it as a single package. signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

Bug#520328: Dependencies between the packages of the same library
Hi, to quote Debian policy: 8.5 Dependencies between the packages of the same library Typically the development version should have an exact version dependency on the runtime library, to make sure that compilation and linking happens correctly. Please do so, and add the necessary dependencies in all your -dev packages (libvtk5-dev, libvtk5-qt3-dev, libvtk5-qt4-dev). A new upstream release of mediawiki was done in order to fix security issues in the installer: This is a security release of 1.13.4, 1.12.4 and 1.6.12. A number of cross-site scripting (XSS) security vulnerabilities were discovered in the web-based installer (config/index.php). These vulnerabilities all require a live installer -- once the installer has been used to install a wiki, it is deactivated. Note that cross-site scripting vulnerabilities can be used to attack any website in the same cookie domain. So if you have an uninstalled copy of MediaWiki on the same site as an active web service, MediaWiki could be used to attack the active service. If you are hosting an old copy of MediaWiki that you have never installed, we advise you to remove it from the web. Additionally, we are releasing 1.14.0rc1, the first release candidate of the 2009 Q1 branch. Brave souls are encouraged to download it and try it out. Note that we have disabled SQLite installation in 1.14, due to the incompleteness of the implementation. We intend to restore it in 1.15. We're not sure how many people are using SQLite, so contact us if our treatment of it is causing you problems. I have already imported the patch in the lenny/ branch on the SVN[1], but I have absolutely no time to do serious testings, so any interested contributor would be much welcome :) Romain [1]: svn{+ssh}://svn.debian.org/svn/pkg-mediawiki/mediawiki/lenny -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=fr_FR.UTF8, LC_CTYPE=fr_FR.UTF8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages mediawiki depends on: ii apache2-mpm-worker [httpd 2.2.11-1 Apache HTTP Server - high speed th ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.24 Debian configuration management sy ii mime-support 3.44-1 MIME files 'mime.types' 'mailcap ii php5 5.2.6.dfsg.1-2 server-side, HTML-embedded scripti ii php5-mysql5.2.6.dfsg.1-2 MySQL module for php5 Versions of packages mediawiki recommends: ii mysql-server-5.0 [mysql-s 5.0.67-1 MySQL database server binaries ii php5-cli 5.2.6.dfsg.1-2 command-line interpreter for the p Versions of packages mediawiki suggests: pn clamavnone (no description available) ii imagemagick 7:6.3.7.9.dfsg1-2.1+lenny1 image manipulation programs pn mediawiki-mat none (no description available) pn memcached none (no description available) -- debconf information: mediawiki/webserver: apache2 ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: mediawiki Source-Version: 1:1.12.0-2lenny3 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of mediawiki, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: mediawiki-math_1.12.0-2lenny3_amd64.deb to pool/main/m/mediawiki/mediawiki-math_1.12.0-2lenny3_amd64.deb mediawiki_1.12.0-2lenny3.diff.gz to pool/main/m/mediawiki/mediawiki_1.12.0-2lenny3.diff.gz mediawiki_1.12.0-2lenny3.dsc to pool/main/m/mediawiki/mediawiki_1.12.0-2lenny3.dsc mediawiki_1.12.0-2lenny3_all.deb to pool/main/m/mediawiki/mediawiki_1.12.0-2lenny3_all.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached. Please help me to understand why it's bad to use -fPIC for the binary itself. It will work, but with unneeded overhead. Let me explain a little: -fPIC generates position independent code. That is required for .so files because they are loaded at random position in memory while the binary is always loaded always at the same / fixed position in memory. Now, if your code is at a random place in memory you can't rely on constant offsets to access a variable in memory. So how to solve this? You need a reference point. This is how the ABI of x86_64 solves this: |--- test_gcc.S 2009-03-25 20:33:23.0 +0100 |+++ test_fPIC_gcc.S 2009-03-25 20:33:23.0 +0100 |@@ -8,10 +8,10 @@ |.type main, @function | main: | .LFB20: |+ leaq.LC0(%rip), %rdi |subq$8, %rsp | .LCFI0: |- movl$.LC0, %edi |- callputs |+ callp...@plt |xorl%eax, %eax |addq$8, %rsp |ret $.LC0 is the variable I'm going to pass to puts as an argument. Without -fPIC it is just moved (movl) into the register and then we jump to puts. With -fPIC an constant (.LC0) is added to $rip (the current instruction pointer) and saved in the argument register. leaq is little more complex and has two bytes more in the binary level. So your variable here is reference relative from your current position. This little overhead has to be done for all variables (except for those on stack) and for a few branches. Does not look that bad, does it? Now let see what x86_32 does: |--- test_i386.S 2009-03-25 20:37:40.0 +0100 |+++ test_fPIC_i386.S2009-03-25 20:37:46.0 +0100 |@@ -12,16 +12,28 @@ |pushl -4(%ecx) |pushl %ebp |movl%esp, %ebp |- pushl %ecx |- subl$4, %esp |- movl$.LC0, (%esp) |- callputs |- addl$4, %esp |+ subl$24, %esp |+ movl%ebx, -4(%ebp) |+ call__i686.get_pc_thunk.bx |+ addl$_GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_, %ebx |+ movl%ecx, -8(%ebp) |+ leal@gotoff(%ebx), %eax |+ movl%eax, (%esp) |+ callp...@plt |+ movl-8(%ebp), %ecx |xorl%eax, %eax |- popl%ecx |+ movl-4(%ebp), %ebx |+ movl%ebp, %esp |popl%ebp |leal-4(%ecx), %esp |ret Again, without -fPIC $.LC0 is pushed directly on stack but with there is little more going going on. save ebx, get a pointer, add GOT offset, load .LCO via an offset the GOT table and then push on stack and restore ebx later. I could add more arches here, compare them and their overhead but I think you get the point. So I guess that you should be fine if you take my initial patch and replace pariss with parisc* Will that still result in -fPIC being used for the binary -- but only on HPPA? no, just libkatze and a few others but not the midori binary and yes just on hppa. PS: as you noticed, for the experimental upload just now I just set PIC unconditionally. From Debian Policy, -fPIC should *always* be used for .so files. So as I see it the remaining issue is to ensure that -fPIC isn't used or the midori binary, but is used for the .so files. the unconditionally in my patch title was meant for the .a files not the whole build process. My bad wording + after changing the code I did not change the subject. As I wrote in my other email, I try to now to build libkatze twice: once with -fPIC to link against .so files and once without to link against the midori binary. But it is also merged into a few add-ons which are .so and that's where you need the -fPIC because now the static library becomes suddenly a shared library as well. Then one possible fix is to build it twice, once with -fPIC to use in shared objects, and once without it for midori. Which is the only sane way to do it if you need both static and shared objects. please see attached. Tested here on amd64 and it looks like working. Bug#441490: patch to fix ivtools FTBFS #441490
On 03/25/2009 02:11 PM, Günter Geiger wrote: Go ahead with the NMU. I do not have plans to upgrade soon. OK, i've built an NMU that resolves #441490, and published the files at: http://lair.fifthhorseman.net/~dkg/src/ivtools/ the .changes and .dsc are signed, but as i'm not a DD yet, someone else is going to need to do the final review and upload (Patrick?) I'm attaching the interdiff between versions here (basically, just the previous diff plus a changelog entry). fwiw, in my testing i tried out the package by running idraw and flipbook, and i have serious reservations about keeping this package in the archive without an active maintainer. There are trivial reasons, like: the X11-based tools do not respect $DISPLAY -- I had to invoke them like idraw -display $DISPLAY if i wasn't running them on the local console. Also, the package contains a large number of binaries without manpages, and isn't lintian clean. Then, there are bugginess reasons, like the fact that flipbook appears to segfault if you type help in the lower pane, and seems to have trouble resuming from being backgrounded. And finally, there is the question of overall necessity: for people doing the kind of work that idraw allows, inkscape is signficantly superior today, under active development, and up-to-date in the archive. flipbook allows animated vector graphics (which inkscape does not), but the renderer is significantly lower-quality than people expect of vector renderers today, and the file format generated is not nearly as widely-used as SVG. Given that: * no packages depend on any of the ivtools packages (the only thing close i could find is that pstoedit Suggests: ivtools-bin), * the maintainer has stated his intent to orphan, * we have a 4-year-old version in the archive, and * none of the ivtools packages appear to even have an entry in popcon, it's not clear to me that there is a good argument for keeping the package in debian at all. So while i'm offering this NMU to fix an outstanding RC bug, i think this bug (and several others) might be better fixed by the package's removal from the archive. Günter, Kari, i'll leave it up to the two of you to file an RM request if neither of you is actively interested in resuscitating this package. Bug#518802: The version of the VirtualBox kernel modules and the version of VirtualBox application are not matching
Looking at the upstream BTS: http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/1499 | Sorry, but this will not work. You have to use either a 32-bit kernel | and a 32-bit environment or a 64-bit kernel and a 64-bit environment if | you want to use VirtualBox. The reason is that VirtualBox is kind of | system software which has to communicate closely with the host kernel. There seems to be no way to provide an -amd64 modules package for i386 systems at all. - Dietrich -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#521225: samba: mishandling of mapped read-only attribute causes failed profile sync
Package: samba Version: 2:3.3.2-1 Severity: critical Tags: patch Justification: causes serious data loss When using roaming profiles with Samba configured as a domain controller, Samba bug #6186 can cause data loss if an attempt is made to syncronize a roaming profile that includes a file that is marked read-only.
