This means that any local user of the system can run the CGI script as the backuppc user. The CGI script simply reads the REMOTE_USER environment variable to check permissions which can be faked by the invoking user. The CGI also seems to treat the absense of the REMOTE_USER variable as allowing full access! As an example on a default install that backs up /etc (the 'localhost' host) the following command will reveal the password hashes for the web interface (stored in /etc/backuppc/htpasswd and which should be readable only by the backuppc user): /usr/share/backuppc/cgi-bin/index.cgi action=RestoreFile host=localhost num=0 share=/etc dir=/backuppc/htpasswd Note that if backuppc is used to fully backup other machines as root (the recommended configuration) then it is possible using this method to read files such as the backed up /etc/shadow !! Please contact ow...@bugs.debian.org immediately.) -- 51: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=51 Debian Bug Tracking System Contact ow...@bugs.debian.org with problems ---BeginMessage--- Package: mdadm Version: 2.6.8-12-gb47dff6-2 Severity: important Tags: patch After recent upgrade, mdadm stopped working for me. The modules did not load and thus array was not assembled. Manual inspection revealed, that when modprobe is called as: modprobe -kq md from /etc/init.d/mdadm-raid, it complains about unrecognized option -k and does nothing. People who have root on md device are not affected, because the script used in initramfs does not specify that option. Attached patch removes -k option from all invocations of modprobe I found in the package. The one in mdadm-raid was the one that hit me. This is *critical* bugfix release. One of the bugs is a one-byte buffer overflow that allows a carefully crafted exploit to take down your name-server. It is highly unlikely that the one-byte-off issue can lead to other (system) exploits. The bug affects all version of NSD 2.0.0 to 3.2.1. Whether the bug can be exploited to depends on various aspects of the OS and is therefore distribution and compiler dependent. For more information: http://www.nlnetlabs.nl/publications/NSD_vulnerability_announcement.html We strongly recommend you to update your systems to the latest version. If you have reasons for not running the latest version of NSD, we strongly advise you to at least apply the patch that resolves the critical bug. Bug#532627: kfreebsd-image-7.2-1 for kfreebsd-i386 seriously broken
Hi. The 7.2-1 kernel package for kfreebsd-i386 is currently in NEW. !!! Do not install it !!! I would just say important as it prevents only 32-bit binaries to work, 64-bit binaries works for me for weeks ... This prevents almost all biarch packages to be built, including glibc, gcc, gcj, gdc, etc. I had to downgrade the kernel on the build daemons to version 7.1 to get those packages built. It prevents all 32-bit binaries to work, on kfreebsd-i386 it means whole system. So, it is really grave. I am fine with removing the check for now (or maybe removing BI_BRAND_NOTE from sys/amd64/linux32/linux32_sysvec.c), I was more speaking about a more long term solution that may be merged upstream, like checking the OS field correctly. I have a slightly hackish patch with the check of the OS field. After test on kfreebsd-i386 I will put in our SVN. Bug#532740: libdkim0d: Should use strtok_r() not strtok() for thread safety
Package: libdkim0d Version: 1:1.0.19-3 Severity: grave Tags: security Justification: user security hole The following patch makes libdkim use strtok_r() instead of strtok() for thread safety. If a server process has multiple threads operating on behalf of different users while verifying dkim data (IE receiving mail for multiple users) then data may be leaked. Also this may cause a server process to crash and there is a possibility of it being an exploitable bug. I don't think that the security concerns are great enough to make a secret report for a coordinated release, but I do think that they are great enough to justify a grave bug report. diff -ru libdkim-1.0.19/src/dkimverify.cpp libdkim-1.0.19-new/src/dkimverify.cpp --- libdkim-1.0.19/src/dkimverify.cpp 2008-05-12 20:08:06.0 +1000 +++ libdkim-1.0.19-new/src/dkimverify.cpp 2009-06-11 18:28:10.0 +1000 @@ -855,6 +855,9 @@ int CDKIMVerify::ParseDKIMSignature( const string sHeader, SignatureInfo sig ) { + // for strtok_r() + char *saveptr; + // save header for later sig.Header = sHeader; @@ -1032,7 +1035,7 @@ { // make sure dns is in the list bool HasDNS = false; - char *s = strtok(values[9], :); + char *s = strtok_r(values[9], :, saveptr); while (s != NULL) { if (strncmp(s, dns, 3) == 0 (s[3] == '\0' || s[3] == '/')) @@ -1040,7 +1043,7 @@ HasDNS = true; break; } - s = strtok(NULL, : \t); + s = strtok_r(NULL, : \t, saveptr); } if (!HasDNS) return DKIM_BAD_SYNTAX; // todo: maybe create a new error code for unknown query method @@ -1080,7 +1083,7 @@ // parse the signed headers list bool HasFrom = false, HasSubject = false; RemoveSWSP(values[4]); // header names shouldn't have spaces in them so this should be ok... - char *s = strtok(values[4], :); + char *s = strtok_r(values[4], :, saveptr); while (s != NULL) { if (_stricmp(s, From) == 0) @@ -1090,7 +1093,7 @@ sig.SignedHeaders.push_back(s); - s = strtok(NULL, :); + s = strtok_r(NULL, :, saveptr); } if (!HasFrom) @@ -1194,6 +1197,9 @@ int SelectorInfo::Parse( char* Buffer ) { + // for strtok_r() + char *saveptr; + static const char *tags[] = {v,g,h,k,p,s,t,n,NULL}; char *values[sizeof(tags)/sizeof(tags[0])] = {NULL}; @@ -1235,14 +1241,14 @@ else { // MUST include sha1 or sha256 - char *s = strtok(values[2], :); + char *s = strtok_r(values[2], :, saveptr); while (s != NULL) { if (strcmp(s, sha1) == 0) AllowSHA1 = true; else if (strcmp(s, sha256) == 0) AllowSHA256 = true; - s = strtok(NULL, :); + s = strtok_r(NULL, :, saveptr); } if ( !(AllowSHA1 || AllowSHA256) ) return DKIM_SELECTOR_INVALID; // todo: maybe create a new error code for unsupported hash algorithm @@ -1261,7 +1267,7 @@ { // make sure * or email is in the list bool ServiceTypeMatch = false; - char *s = strtok(values[5], :); + char *s = strtok_r(values[5], :, saveptr); while (s != NULL) { if (strcmp(s, *) == 0 || strcmp(s, email) == 0) @@ -1269,7 +1275,7 @@ ServiceTypeMatch = true; break; } - s = strtok(NULL, :); + s = strtok_r(NULL, :, saveptr); } if (!ServiceTypeMatch) return DKIM_SELECTOR_INVALID; @@ -1278,7 +1284,7 @@ // flags if (values[6] != NULL) { - char *s = strtok(values[6], :); + char *s = strtok_r(values[6], :, saveptr); while (s != NULL) { if (strcmp(s, y) == 0) @@ -1289,7 +1295,7 @@ { SameDomain = true; } - s = strtok(NULL, :); + s = strtok_r(NULL, :, saveptr); } } @@ -1388,6 +1394,9 @@
Bug#532734: [kdebase-workspace-bin] Plasma refuses to start
severity 532734 important forcemerge 532734 532735 thanks Hi, This crash seems to be due to the recent update of python-qt4. You probably have some python plasmoids on your desktop. As a temporary workaround, backup your plasma configuration and let it start with a clean one, which has no python plasmoids on it. To backup: mkdir ~/plasma-backup mv ~/.kde/share/config/plasma* ~/plasma-backup/ I am lowering the severity, because this affects only people that use python plasmoids. Bug#532480: Installation does not give errors but qtiplot does not start
Hi Marco I am working on qtiplot version 0.9.7.7 but there are some problems and it is going slowly to get it into Debian. There is an unofficial package on my server: deb-src http://195.198.146.229/debian/ source/ deb http://195.198.146.229/debian/ i386/ but I think this version only works on unstable. I will try to backport this version to Lenny during the weekend. Would that be a solution? Done, nothing happened. This is the process from ps -aux: model12641 0.1 0.9 199288 20432 pts/4S+ 11:27 0:00 /usr/bin/qtiplot The process does not die. I have tested qtiplot in my laptop acer with debian lenny amd64 (the same distro of my desktop pc) and it works fine. The two computer have very similar software, both with nvidia drivers. Are you using the Debian package as well on your laptop? Can you please do the following: $strace qtiplot qtiplot_strace_output.txt and send me (personally) if you want to continue debugging this. Could you try a small hack and add a sleep 30 to the network-manager init script, after the daemon has started, in order to give it some time to establish a network connection before gdm/X is started. Sure, I can give that a try tomorrow when I'm back in the office. I'm wondering how that might work, though: this is well before anybody even attempts to log in, i.e. before gdm displays the login box. I don't know if I made that clear before... OK, that didn't help at all I'm afraid. Bug#526398: me too
This is especially bad if one is using an ext2 filesystem with a SSD drive. One of the failure modes that does not involve data loss is that the kernel sees the filesystem is unclean and refuses to mount it read-write, leaving the system fairly inexplicably broken for normal users (ie, gdm can't log the user in). I observed that happening today. This bug has been sitting idle for 2 months. I hope that you're not waiting for someone to completly hose their system before fixing it. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#531595: [tex-live] Supporting old releases: Using LaTeX after more than 5 years
Hi Karl, hi all, together with Frank we have developped a patch for fmtutil that deals with the following problem: On So, 07 Jun 2009, Frank Küster wrote: Now if we look more closely, it turns out that LaTeX issues only a *warning* if you read the text. However, the lines are prepended with ! , and therefore are treated as errors by fmtutil. In other words, the LaTeX format can be built fine even after 5 years have passed. But fmtutil won't accept it as cleanly built. The idea is that *if* a fmt file was generated and the string '! ' (without ') are found at the beginning of a line then this was only a *warning* and no error. Currently fmtutil does in this case: log_failure pdftex -ini ... possibly failed. and log_failure triggers and return value of 0, which turns out as error. We have changed fmtutil by adding a new logging facility log_warning (all paralleling log_failure) that is used instead. Messages generated from this will not change the exit value, but will be reported at the end. I attach the patch against current TeX Live's fmtutil in Build/source/texk/tetex/fmtutil. Please comment, esp. if you (I am having my Debian hat on) will accept that patch into the upstream source. Bug#531569: Fixing LaTeX in oldstable
Dear release managers, I am right now uploading an again-installable tetex-bin to oldstable-proposed-updates (I hope that's correct?), and texlive-bin will follow soon. Both uploads have been built in etch pbuilder chroots, and have been tested to fix the problem. The changes are small, essentially only one patch file is added, and except for the changelog one file in debian/ is changed, namely the quilt series file (for tetex-bin) or the dpatch 00list file. The patch is attached. Do we need to do anything else (besides fixing stable and sid, but that isn't urgent since the bug won't show up soon)? Bug#532736: CVE-2009-1391: Buffer overflow in Compress::Raw::Zlib
On Thu, Jun 11, 2009 at 12:42:12PM +0300, Niko Tyni wrote: On Thu, Jun 11, 2009 at 10:00:08AM +0200, Stefan Fritsch wrote: Package: perl Version: 5.10.0-19 Severity: grave Tags: security Justification: user security hole Compress::Raw::Zlib versions before 2.017 contain a buffer overflow in inflate(). A badly formed zlib-stream can trigger this buffer overflow and cause the perl process at least to hang or to crash. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=CVE-2009-1391 My preliminary understanding is that the minimal fix could be just this hunk: -Sv_Grow(output, SvLEN(output) + bufinc) ; +Sv_Grow(output, SvLEN(output) + bufinc +1) ; but I'm not quite sure if we also need the Only setup the stream output pointers if there is spare capacity in the outout SV part in http://search.cpan.org/diff?from=Compress-Raw-Zlib-2.015to=Compress-Raw-Zlib-2.017#Zlib.xs It now seems to me that the latter part is only relevant with the LIMIT_OUTPUT functionality first introduced in 2.015. So it shouldn't be needed for the Lenny security updates. (I've found no way to pass the function an output buffer for appending that's already full to the last byte on the C side. So there should always be enough room in the buffer at the initialization phase.) I've verified that the minimal off-by-one fix above (attached for convenience) removes the valgrind error in the original proof of concept (available at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=346729). The attached version of the patch applies against libcompress-raw-zlib-perl/2.012-1 as is, and against ext/Compress/Raw/Zlib/Zlib.xs in perl/5.10.0-19 with minimal fuzz. The issue doesn't affect Etch AFAICS, as Compress-Raw-Zlib was only introduced in the Perl core in the 5.9 development line, and the separate libcompress-raw-zlib-perl package wasn't present in Etch. Security team, I'd love to have some confirmation on all this. I'll make my best to get the fix into sid in the weekend, hopefully Friday night. @pkg-perl: if somebody wants to handle the separate package, be my guest. I'll prioritize the perl package and will look at the other one afterwards if necessary. Can you run Octave under gdb and find where it hangs, either by running log2 (complex (0, inf)) and interrupting it when the hang happens and getting a stack trace, or by stepping through the log2 function (and the functions it calls) to find where it hangs? When I run it through ./run-octave -g, the command above does not hang, but gives immediately this, even when I set a breakpoint at log2: octave:1 log2 (complex (0, inf)) Program received signal SIGBUS, Bus error. Bug#530000: [Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#530000: upgrading dbus and hal at the same time can break hal's init script
severity 53 important thanks Michael Biebl wrote: Hi Rob, you you get me a sh -x output of the hal init script? If hal has already been started (by dbus), it shouldn't fail if it's started a second time (by the hal postinst script). So I can't reproduce your problem. About restarting only those services that are actually running: For that to work, all init script (which depend on dbus) would need to support the status action. I doubt this is the case bug will have to verify that. As I can't reproduce the problem myself and the hal init script should already handle being started multiple times and Rob didn't provide any further info, I'm downgrading to severity important. It could be a problem in how the libidn package depends on gcj, though, and suggestions on that is welcome. /Simon ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: gcc-defaults Source-Version: 1.87 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of gcc-defaults, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: cpp_4.3.3-9_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/cpp_4.3.3-9_i386.deb g++-multilib_4.3.3-9_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/g++-multilib_4.3.3-9_i386.deb g++_4.3.3-9_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/g++_4.3.3-9_i386.deb gcc-defaults_1.87.dsc to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/gcc-defaults_1.87.dsc gcc-defaults_1.87.tar.gz to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/gcc-defaults_1.87.tar.gz gcc-multilib_4.3.3-9_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/gcc-multilib_4.3.3-9_i386.deb gcc_4.3.3-9_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/gcc_4.3.3-9_i386.deb gcj-jdk_4.3.3-9_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/gcj-jdk_4.3.3-9_i386.deb gcj-jre-headless_4.3.3-9_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/gcj-jre-headless_4.3.3-9_i386.deb gcj-jre_4.3.3-9_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/gcj-jre_4.3.3-9_i386.deb gcj_4.3.3-9_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/gcj_4.3.3-9_i386.deb gdc_4.1.2-37_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/gdc_4.1.2-37_i386.deb gfortran-multilib_4.3.3-9_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/gfortran-multilib_4.3.3-9_i386.deb gfortran_4.3.3-9_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/gfortran_4.3.3-9_i386.deb gij_4.3.3-9_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/gij_4.3.3-9_i386.deb gnat_4.3.3-9_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/gnat_4.3.3-9_i386.deb gobjc++-multilib_4.3.3-9_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/gobjc++-multilib_4.3.3-9_i386.deb gobjc++_4.3.3-9_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/gobjc++_4.3.3-9_i386.deb gobjc-multilib_4.3.3-9_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/gobjc-multilib_4.3.3-9_i386.deb gobjc_4.3.3-9_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/gobjc_4.3.3-9_i386.deb gpc-doc_2.1-4.1.2-37_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/gpc-doc_2.1-4.1.2-37_i386.deb gpc_2.1-4.1.2-37_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/gpc_2.1-4.1.2-37_i386.deb libgcj-bc_4.3.3-9_i386.deb to pool/main/g/gcc-defaults/libgcj-bc_4.3.3-9_i386.deb libgcj-common_4.4.0-7_all.deb to

Architecture: mipsel (mips64) I can confirm this problem on mips(el). It seems to be a toolchain issue on this architectures: 1.) The 1.2.12-1 package from the archive works fine. If I recompile it with a current toolchain on sid, I the get same behaviour. 2.) Compiling 1.2.14-2 with the lenny toolchain produces working binaries. The last upload of binutils was before dbus 1.2.12-1, and this binary was still working. On an up-to-date sid system and binutils from lenny, the resulting binary works correctly. Thus it seems to be a regression in binutils, so reassigning.
