Bug#538357: Debian boot hangs after kernel upgrade

2009-07-25 Thread Rod
Package: kernel
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

After upgrading to kernel 2.6.26-2-amd64, boot hangs with a corruptd display
(random coloured splotches across the top, and the initial BIOS options
about 2/3 of the way down the screen, in a small font - the Del for setup, F12
for boot options etc.). Keyboard is unresponsive, even Ctl-Alt-Del
has no effect. Hard reset is needed to restart system.

Thankfuklly, unlike some distros, the previous kernel is still operational, so
I'm able to contimue using the machine.

When the external interface is not up yet (like in wireless connections)
 dante does not start.
It says can't find interface and terminates.

Thanks for your bug report! Yes, I understand how this could be
a problem for you.

Unfortunately, I don't think this is exactly a bug : It is more or
less the way that dante has been designed to work. As part of its
startup routine, the dante server tries to figure out some information
about the system's network configuration so that it can bind properly to
the addresses it wants, thus speeding up the actual forming of
connections later on when the clients request it. In this process, the
server tries to figure out the IP addresses of the interfaces it should
send out data on, and fails if it can't.

I realize that this is a bit inconvenient when interfaces come and go,
but changing it might require major changes in dante's mode of
operation. What you describe is not exactly a crash - it's more like
the server detects what it thinks is *incorrect* configuration, and it
refuses to start up with it : Yes, I know that it is not incorrect
in your point of view - and you're sort of right, it's just that dante
doesn't work this way :)

Could you try to set things up so that the dante server starts when the
interface comes up, and stops when the interface comes down? Something
like up invoke-rc.d --force dante-server start and
down invoke-rc.d --force dante-server stop in /etc/network/interfaces,
and disabling the dante-server automatic start-up at runlevels 3, 4, 5?

G'luck,
Peter

groff uses -dSAFER elsewhere (pre-html.cpp); is there any reason not to
do so here?

Thanks,

Package: groff
Version: 1.20.1-4
Severity: grave
File: /usr/bin/pdfroff
Tags: security

pdfroff invokes gs without -dSAFER, leading to the ability to write,
rename, and delete arbitrary files:

  lakeview ok % cat attack.roff
I am an evil attacking document. Boo!
  \X'ps: exec (/tmp/remove-me) deletefile'
  lakeview ok % touch /tmp/remove-me pdfroff attack.roff /dev/null [ !
-f /tmp/remove-me ] echo removed
GPL Ghostscript SVN PRE-RELEASE 8.64: Unrecoverable error, exit code 1
  removed

Using ps2pdf may be a better solution, since it uses -dSAFER
automatically.

Obviously, this is a fairly straightforward example, but in a document
the size of groff's -me manual, this could easily be hidden. Disguising
it is easy, such as in:

  lakeview ok % cat attack.roff
I am an evil attacking document. Boo!
  .ds df deletefile
  .ds fn /tmp/remove-me
  \X'ps: exec (\*(fn) \*(df'

Processing or viewing a document from an unknown source shouldn't by
default cause code from that document to be executed, in general.

See attached report; this is indeed a standard anti-pattern resulting in
security vulnerabilities. In Debian I'd be rather tempted to use 'mktemp
-d' to fix this. What do you think?

According to pdfroff(1) (and my inspection of the source code), pdfroff
uses $$ (the current pid) to create temporary files. This is extremely
easy to predict, and thus, insecure.

Please fix both the code and the documentation so that they securely
generate (or reference) temporary files.

Package: macopix
Version: 1.7.4-1
Severity: serious
Tags: patch
Usertags: implicit-pointer-conversion

Our automated buildd log filter[1] detected a problem that is likely to
cause your package to segfault on architectures where the size of a
pointer is greater than the size of an integer, such as ia64 and amd64.

  Function `gdk_x11_screen_get_window_manager_name' implicitly converted to
pointer at utils.c:386

This is often due to a missing function prototype definition.
For more information, see [2].

Though it is guaranteed that this codepath will cause a segfault on certain
architectures, it is not guaranteed that this codepath would ever be executed
(e.g., if the returned pointer is never dereferenced). However, this bug
does prevent the ia64 buildd from successfully building this package, resulting
in a practical FTBFS issue and warranting the serious severity.

Package: libmysqlclient-dev
Version: 5.1.30-2
Tags: patch
Severity: serious
Justification: Violation of MUST in Debian Policy section 10.2

Hello,

This bug is related to #457915.

Currently Debian Policy section 10.2 states:

As to the static libraries, the common case is not to have relocatable code,
since there is no benefit, unless in specific cases; therefore the static
version must not be compiled with the -fPIC flag. Any exception to this rule
should be discussed on the mailing list debian-de...@lists.debian.org, and the
reasons for compiling with the -fPIC flag must be recorded in the file
README.Debian

libmysqld.a is a static library and it is built with -fPIC only on amd64, but
that is not described in README.Debian. Also please do not treat a single arch
specially since that makes absolutely no sense. You either build with -fPIC on
all arches or none or build both PIC and nonPIC versions on all arches (which
I'm suggesting).

Therefore this bug is also a request to provide both -fPIC and non-fPIC
versions of libmysqld.a. I have even written a patch for this (debdiff
attached). I need libmysqld to be linked into dynamic library [1][2], but I
can't use it until it is built without -fPIC on other arches.

The changes make mysql build twice without and with -fPIC respectively in
separate build directories (the 2nd time only libmysqld and its dependencies
are built). Then both libmysqld.a (nonPIC version) and libmysqld_pic.a (PIC
version) are installed to libmysqlclient-dev. As a side effect of using out-
of-source-tree builds, hack in clean target is no longer needed. Patch 02
fixes FTBFS of libmysqld examples due to undefined symbol.

The only remaining part for you is to create a README.Debian. Justification is
of -fPIC version is simple: libmysqld_pic.a is needed to be able to include it
into shared libraries, which is a perfectly valid use case for libmysqld.
Since you still provide nonPIC libmysqld.a, Debian Policy is not violated.

P.S. libmysqld_pic.a and libmysqld.a are around 16MB each and they increase
package size by 4MBs each. So it makes sense to split them both into their own
package (libmysqld).

ok. I will upload this package in several days. Also I could help to
maintain the stardict package if you do not have enough time. Thanks for
 your asking.

I uploaded stardict 3.0.1-6(added a pseudo binary package named stardic
to help users transition), but stardict package doesn't content any
dictionary data.

So now this bug is pending for your stardict-dictionary package upload.
Let me know if you need help.

We believe that the bug you reported is now fixed; the following
package(s) have been removed from unstable:

  wink | 1.5.1060-8 | source, i386

Note that the package(s) have simply been removed from the tag
database and may (or may not) still be in the pool; this is not a bug.
The package(s) will be physically removed automatically when no suite
references them (and in the case of source, when no binary references
it). Please also remember that the changes have been done on the
master archive (ftp-master.debian.org) and will not propagate to any
mirrors (ftp.debian.org included) until the next cron.daily run at the
earliest.

Packages are never removed from testing by hand. Testing tracks
unstable and will automatically remove packages which were removed
from unstable when removing them from testing causes no dependency
problems.

Bugs which have been reported against this package are not automatically
removed from the Bug Tracking System. Please check all open bugs and
close them or re-assign them to another package if the removed package
was superseded by another one.

Bug#538382: ekiga: uninstallable on i386, MU appears to have been built against unofficial ptlib packages

2009-07-25 Thread Simon McVittie
Package: ekiga
Version: 3.2.5-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package uninstallable

The maintainer (i386) upload of Ekiga depends on libpt2.6.4, but the first
official i386 binaries for libpt2.6.4 have not yet left the buildd that
produced them (which is bug #537320).

I can only conclude that the maintainer of Ekiga compiled the uploaded i386
binaries against packages other than those shipped by Debian. That does not
seem like a good thing for the stability of the distribution, to say the least
(and seems like a Policy §2.2.1 violation).

Please do not upload packages built against packages not supported by Debian,
unless you're going to upload the dependency packages yourself, before the
dependent package (i.e. making them official, by uploading them and taking
responsibility for that upload).

In the short term, this also makes ekiga uninstallable on i386.

I will now try to use this patch on 2.6.28.

I also see this. Disabling the Max CPUID Value Limit in the BIOS
CPU configuration allows the kernel to boot.

However, applying the patch in the link above did not allow the
kernel to boot without this option being disabled. I applied
directly to the current linux-2.6 source package, then built and
installed it. I'll try again tomorrow with both patch1 and patch2
(this was just patch1), and see if that makes a difference.

Did appyling these patches fix the issue for you? Alternatively
you could just test 2.6.30 from unstable.

Cheers,

Since Farsight 1 is obsolete, I think the best way to deal with this bug is
to remove the following source packages from Debian. I believe nothing else
depends on Farsight 1 any more.

* farsight (obsoleted by farsight2)
* telepathy-stream-engine (obsoleted by telepathy-farsight library)
* sugar-presence-service (v0.82, obsoleted by sugar-presence-service-0.84)
* sugar (v0.82, obsoleted by sugar-0.84)

All of the replacement packages are in testing already, so this wouldn't remove
anything important.

Jonas and other Sugar packagers: since sugar 0.82 and s-p-s 0.82 are your
packages, I'd like to check with you before I proceed. May I remove them?

Simon

Bug#538394: manpages installed into a wrong location

2009-07-25 Thread Jindřich Makovička
Package: djvulibre
Version: 3.5.22-2

Hi,

current djvulibre packages have manual pages located right in the root
directory under /man1 instead of /usr/share/man/man1 , violating the
FHS.

Bug#538396: libsqlite3-0: Sqlite triggers bus error in apr-util test suite on sparc causing FTBFS

2009-07-25 Thread Stefan Fritsch
Package: libsqlite3-0
Version: 3.6.14.2-1
Severity: serious

Hi,

apr-util FTBFSs because the test suite fails with a SIGBUS in libsqlite3-0 on
sparc. This even happens to apr-util 1.3.4+dfsg-2, which is now in testing (and
built fine in May [1]). Since the build in May was with 3.6.13-1, I assume this
has been broken in a later sqlite version, but it could also be a compiler
issue. The problem appears both with 3.6.14.2-1 and 3.6.16-1.

Maybe this is the same as #524140, but I am not sure.

Here is a stacktrace (actually two, one before the SIGBUS and one after):

Bug#520095: removes the toplevel mountpoint directories and fails to start the next time

2009-07-25 Thread Jan Christoph Nordholz
Hi Michael,

(the following holds for both autofs v4 and v5)

usually the daemon creates these directories on startup and removes
them on exit. If you do not want that to happen, it suffices to
mark the directory as u-w:

] r...@apocatequil:/etc# grep ^/misc /etc/auto.master
] /misc /etc/auto.misc
] r...@apocatequil:/etc# ls -ld /misc
] ls: cannot access /misc: No such file or directory
] r...@apocatequil:/etc# /etc/init.d/autofs start
] Starting automount: done.
] r...@apocatequil:/etc# ls -ld /misc
] drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 2009-07-25 16:08 /misc
] r...@apocatequil:/etc# /etc/init.d/autofs stop
] Stopping automount: done.
] r...@apocatequil:/etc# ls -ld /misc
] ls: cannot access /misc: No such file or directory
] r...@apocatequil:/etc# mkdir /misc; chmod 0555 /misc
] r...@apocatequil:/etc# ls -ld /misc
] dr-xr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2009-07-25 16:08 /misc
] r...@apocatequil:/etc# /etc/init.d/autofs start
] Starting automount: done.
] r...@apocatequil:/etc# ls -ld /misc
] drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 2009-07-25 16:08 /misc
] r...@apocatequil:/etc# /etc/init.d/autofs stop
] Stopping automount: done.
] r...@apocatequil:/etc# ls -ld /misc
] dr-xr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2009-07-25 16:08 /misc
] r...@apocatequil:/etc#

So I presume the real problem here is that autofs cannot create
the /net mountpoint upon startup. This is not a very usual case,
because the only possibility I can think of is a NFS root with
root squashing enabled (but how can it remove that directory then
when it's going down?)... I'm not sure if this justifies grave.
But I admit that it's not in the documentation (at least nowhere
I know of) and that the initscript startup exit code is not
helpful.

Jan

Hi,

ah, autofs4 indeed removes the directory even without write permission
(v5 doesn't), I thought I'd checked that, too. But this behaviour has
been around for ages, and I still don't understand why it fails for
you (i.e. why is root unable to create /net, but perfectly able to
remove it later?). Could you please explain what's going on there?

removing the top-level dir is to chattr+i it.

ah, autofs4 indeed removes the directory even without write permission
(v5 doesn't), I thought I'd checked that, too. But this behaviour has
been around for ages, and I still don't understand why it fails for
you (i.e. why is root unable to create /net, but perfectly able to
remove it later?). Could you please explain what's going on there?

No idea. If I were knew, I'd attach a patch for this issue.
The code is quite.. funny and fragile, I tried to understand
it right before submitting a bugreport but that wasn't quite
successful.

I ran it under strace - pure automountd, without any startu
scripts but with the same args. It never ever tried to mkdir
or rename. It created two random dirs in /tmp, mounted a
tmpfs over one of them (running mount(8)), bind-mounted it
on second dir, next did stat(/misc) (which returned ENOENT)
and immediately gave up returning it can't mount /misc.

I just installed autofs5 (I didn't know it exist) - and that
one seems to be ok (it gives me another error in daemon.log,
like this:
 Jul 25 19:23:45 gandalf automount[15097]: \
syntax error in nsswitch config near [ syntax error ]
, but that's another matter).

I've one guess pending still: my /tmp is tmpfs, maybe it checks
for st_rdev somehow, and does not do anything useful if /tmp and
/ are on different filesystems? But I've to run now, can't
verify it today.. perhaps tomorrow.

Thanks!

/mjt

Since Farsight 1 is obsolete, I think the best way to deal with this bug is
to remove the following source packages from Debian. I believe nothing else
depends on Farsight 1 any more.

* farsight (obsoleted by farsight2)
* telepathy-stream-engine (obsoleted by telepathy-farsight library)
* sugar-presence-service (v0.82, obsoleted by sugar-presence-service-0.84)
* sugar (v0.82, obsoleted by sugar-0.84)

All of the replacement packages are in testing already, so this wouldn't remove
anything important.

Jonas and other Sugar packagers: since sugar 0.82 and s-p-s 0.82 are your
packages, I'd like to check with you before I proceed. May I remove them?

Yes, please go ahead and remove them!

Bug#538189: [dovecot-antispam] incompatibility with dbox mail storage backend

2009-07-25 Thread Ron
severity 538189 important
tags 538189 + help
thanks

Hi Eugene,

Since we haven't heard from Johannes on this yet, I'm downgrading the
severity of this one slightly. It is an important issue, and I agree
it definitely shouldn't crash dovecot under any circumstance, but I
also think in this case it doesn't warrant a severity that would
prevent this package from migrating to testing when dovecot 1.2 does.

If we do that, it will instantly be broken for _everyone_, and I don't
really see a justification for also breaking the systems that it does
currently work with.

I presume Johannes doesn't currently have a system using dbox, and I
don't have one either. He was however extraordinarily prompt at
applying the patches I sent for #537765, so I suspect if someone can
provide a clean and tested patch to fix this then it will be dealt
with in much the same way.

Cheers,
Ron

On second thought, I think this is the way to go. The test wanted to
test if the core module detection in dh-make-perl works. Thta
detection heavily relies to Module::CoreList, so a simple test would
work fine. Perhaps adding a negative test about 'Foo::Bar' being core
would suffice to guarantee that there is no a 'return 1' type of
'detection'.

Package: phpicalendar

Justification: user security hole

Hi,
the following CVE (Common Vulnerabilities Exposures) ids were
published for phpicalendar.

CVE-2008-5840[0]:
| PHP iCalendar 2.24 and earlier allows remote attackers to bypass
| authentication by setting the phpicalendar and phpicalendar_login
| cookies to 1.

CVE-2008-5967[1]:
| admin/index.php in PHP iCalendar 2.3.4, 2.24, and earlier does not
| require administrative authentication for an addupdate action, which
| allows remote attackers to upload a calendar (aka .ics) file with
| arbitrary content to the calendars/ directory outside the web root.

CVE-2008-5968[2]:
| Directory traversal vulnerability in print.php in PHP iCalendar 2.24
| and earlier allows remote attackers to include and execute arbitrary
| local files via a .. (dot dot) in the cookie_language parameter in a
| phpicalendar_* cookie, a different vector than CVE-2006-1292.

These issues read like common issues in php apps and I am wondering,
whether phpicalendar is ready for a stable debian release. I think it
should receive an audit first.

If you fix the vulnerabilities please also make sure to include the
CVE ids in your changelog entry.

Cheers
Steffen

Package: gob
Version: 1.0.12-4
Severity: important

Hi,

Now that Gtk1.2 is removed we are also looking to remove glib1.2 from
the archive. Gob currently fails to build with glib2.0 as it uses
AM_PATH_GLIB. Here is a patch that makes it build, though it probably
needs more testing. (And obviously an autoreconf -fvi).

Thank you,

Package: upgrade-reports
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Hi,

when I upgraded one of my Etch machines to Lenny, the new Perl 5.10 could not
be installed because it conflicted with libarchive-tar-perl (version
1.38-3~etch1) which I had installed. As a consequence, all sorts of package
managing scripts (debsums etc.pp.) broke, and nothing moved. I was able to
manuall delete the offending package using dpkg, and get things going again,
but I don't know if that's within reach of the end user because, at that point,
the system was mostly non-functional because about half of all my packages were
not correctly installed.

I pretty much adhered to the release notes about upgrading from Etch to
Lenny, and used Lenny's aptitude to do most of the job. I also recorded
the upgrade process using 'script'. Here's an excerpt from that
recording:

Unpacking replacement perl ...
dpkg: error processing /srv/apt/archives/perl_5.10.0-19_amd64.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/ptardiff', which is also in package
libarchive-tar-perl
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)

After I figured out that simply overwriting the file using --force
didn't seem to do the trick, I removed the package manually:

# dpkg --purge --force-depends libarchive-tar-perl
dpkg: libarchive-tar-perl: dependency problems, but removing anyway as you
request:
 spamassassin depends on libarchive-tar-perl; however:
Package libarchive-tar-perl is to be removed.
Package perl-modules which provides libarchive-tar-perl is not configured yet.
(Reading database ... 238308 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing libarchive-tar-perl ...

After that, things were back in working order, as far as Perl was concerned.

Kind regards,
--Toni++

Yes, that's possible via a bugreport against ftp.debian.org. It would
not be possible to upload a lower version though.

Hi,

libarchive-tar-perl / 1.38-3~etch1 has been removed from oldstable-p-u

Hi,

An exploit[0] has been published for verlihub:

Verlihub does not sanitize user input passed to the shell via its
 trigger
mechanism. Furthermore, the Verlihub daemon can optionally be
   configured to
run as root. This allows for the arbitrary execution of commands
   by users
connected to the hub and, in the case of the daemon running
   as root,
   complete commandeering of the machine.

Also:

src/ctrigger.cpp line 108:
filename.append(/tmp/trigger.tmp);

Malicious user could prepare a /tmp/trigger.tmp file to cause serious
data loss or compromise a system.

Author provides a fix.

If you fix the vulnerability please also make sure to include the CVE id
(if available) in the changelog entry.

This is a serious bug as it makes installation fail. Possible
solutions are to have the two packages conflict, to rename the common
file in one of the two packages, or to remove the file from one
package and have this package depend on the other package. File
diversions or a Replace relation are another possibility.

Here is a list of files that are known to be shared by both packages
(according to the Contents file for sid/amd64, which may be
slightly out of sync):

This bug is assigned to both packages. If you, the maintainers of
the two packages in question, have agreed on which of the packages will
resolve the problem please reassign the bug to that package.

Bug#538233: gscan2pdf exports blank PDF files - debug output

2009-07-25 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
2009/7/25 Robert Kawecki thewande...@gim11.pl:
 gscan2pdf was run as: gscan2pdf --debug debug.log 21
What I did was importing a JPEG file (tried many times with arbitrary scanned
and on-disk images, the problem persists), choosing Save and saving it on disk
as PDF, 300 dpi, 95 embedded JPEG quality.
I'm attaching the debug log to this message.

Is the jpg imported correctly, i.e. can you see it in the image window?

Argument \x{30}\x{2c}... isn't numeric in numeric eq (==) at
/usr/bin/gscan2pdf line 1769.

is a very strange error message for that line number. Would you mind
posting that line of the code to make sure that it is the same line
that I am looking at.

Can you post your jpg so that I can test it?

Hi,

I upgraded to iceweasel_3.0.6-1 and xulrunner-1.9_1.9.0.12-0lenny1,
however it still crashes. Attached is the backtrace.

Best regards

MySQL 5.1 has just been uploaded and will replace the existing MySQL 5.0.
Once you see libmysqlclient-dev (5.1.36-3) in unstable, please replace
the build dependencies to libmysqlclient15-dev to libmysqlclient-dev and
upload a rebuilded version of your package.

thanks,

-christian-
