Bug#538357: Debian boot hangs after kernel upgrade
Package: kernel Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system After upgrading to kernel 2.6.26-2-amd64, boot hangs with a corruptd display (random coloured splotches across the top, and the initial BIOS options about 2/3 of the way down the screen, in a small font - the Del for setup, F12 for boot options etc.). Keyboard is unresponsive, even Ctl-Alt-Del has no effect. Hard reset is needed to restart system. Thankfuklly, unlike some distros, the previous kernel is still operational, so I'm able to contimue using the machine. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0.2 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash r...@a4200:~$ dpkg -s libc6 | grep ^Version Version: 2.7-18 r...@a4200:~$ ls -l /lib/libc.so.6 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 2009-03-31 10:44 /lib/libc.so.6 - libc-2.7.so r...@a4200:~$ Hardware A4200:~# discover -v Loading XML data... ata pci pcmcia scsi usb Done Scanning buses... ata pci pcmcia scsi usb Done unknown unknown unknown unknown Texas Instruments TSB43AB23 IEEE-1394a-2000 Controller (PHY/Link) Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture VIA Technologies, Inc. Bug#538008: dante-server: dante crashes if the external interface is not up.
package dante-server retitle 538008 dante-server: dante won't start if the external interface is not up. severity 538008 normal thanks On Wed, Jul 22, 2009 at 01:36:48PM +0100, Victor Pablos Ceruelo wrote: Package: dante-server Version: 1.1.19.dfsg-3 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable When the external interface is not up yet (like in wireless connections) dante does not start. It says can't find interface and terminates. Thanks for your bug report! Yes, I understand how this could be a problem for you. Unfortunately, I don't think this is exactly a bug : It is more or less the way that dante has been designed to work. As part of its startup routine, the dante server tries to figure out some information about the system's network configuration so that it can bind properly to the addresses it wants, thus speeding up the actual forming of connections later on when the clients request it. In this process, the server tries to figure out the IP addresses of the interfaces it should send out data on, and fails if it can't. I realize that this is a bit inconvenient when interfaces come and go, but changing it might require major changes in dante's mode of operation. What you describe is not exactly a crash - it's more like the server detects what it thinks is *incorrect* configuration, and it refuses to start up with it : Yes, I know that it is not incorrect in your point of view - and you're sort of right, it's just that dante doesn't work this way :) Could you try to set things up so that the dante server starts when the interface comes up, and stops when the interface comes down? Something like up invoke-rc.d --force dante-server start and down invoke-rc.d --force dante-server stop in /etc/network/interfaces, and disabling the dante-server automatic start-up at runlevels 3, 4, 5? Function `gdk_x11_screen_get_window_manager_name' implicitly converted to pointer at utils.c:386 This is often due to a missing function prototype definition. For more information, see [2]. Though it is guaranteed that this codepath will cause a segfault on certain architectures, it is not guaranteed that this codepath would ever be executed (e.g., if the returned pointer is never dereferenced). However, this bug does prevent the ia64 buildd from successfully building this package, resulting in a practical FTBFS issue and warranting the serious severity. Currently Debian Policy section 10.2 states: As to the static libraries, the common case is not to have relocatable code, since there is no benefit, unless in specific cases; therefore the static version must not be compiled with the -fPIC flag. Any exception to this rule should be discussed on the mailing list debian-de...@lists.debian.org, and the reasons for compiling with the -fPIC flag must be recorded in the file README.Debian libmysqld.a is a static library and it is built with -fPIC only on amd64, but that is not described in README.Debian. Also please do not treat a single arch specially since that makes absolutely no sense. You either build with -fPIC on all arches or none or build both PIC and nonPIC versions on all arches (which I'm suggesting). Therefore this bug is also a request to provide both -fPIC and non-fPIC versions of libmysqld.a. I have even written a patch for this (debdiff attached). I need libmysqld to be linked into dynamic library [1][2], but I can't use it until it is built without -fPIC on other arches. The changes make mysql build twice without and with -fPIC respectively in separate build directories (the 2nd time only libmysqld and its dependencies are built). Then both libmysqld.a (nonPIC version) and libmysqld_pic.a (PIC version) are installed to libmysqlclient-dev. As a side effect of using out- of-source-tree builds, hack in clean target is no longer needed. Patch 02 fixes FTBFS of libmysqld examples due to undefined symbol. The only remaining part for you is to create a README.Debian. Justification is of -fPIC version is simple: libmysqld_pic.a is needed to be able to include it into shared libraries, which is a perfectly valid use case for libmysqld. Since you still provide nonPIC libmysqld.a, Debian Policy is not violated. P.S. libmysqld_pic.a and libmysqld.a are around 16MB each and they increase package size by 4MBs each. So it makes sense to split them both into their own package (libmysqld). #457915: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=457915 1. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=501495 2. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=508399 -- Modestas Vainius modes...@vainius.eu diff -u mysql-dfsg-5.1-5.1.30/debian/control mysql-dfsg-5.1-5.1.30/debian/control --- mysql-dfsg-5.1-5.1.30/debian/control +++ mysql-dfsg-5.1-5.1.30/debian/control @@ -74,7 +74,7 @@ innotop and mysqlreport. Bug#538382: ekiga: uninstallable on i386, MU appears to have been built against unofficial ptlib packages
Package: ekiga Version: 3.2.5-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package uninstallable The maintainer (i386) upload of Ekiga depends on libpt2.6.4, but the first official i386 binaries for libpt2.6.4 have not yet left the buildd that produced them (which is bug #537320). I can only conclude that the maintainer of Ekiga compiled the uploaded i386 binaries against packages other than those shipped by Debian. I can confirm having hit http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12520 Changing the Max CPUID Value Limit to disabled fixed this booting problem. There is a already a patch in mainline (kernel) See this thread http://groups.google.com/group/linux.kernel/browse_thread/thread/2f27b0fe76919496/3638e04e45c3824b?lnk=raot Post from Ingo Molnar on 22.Jan I will now try to use this patch on 2.6.28. I also see this. Disabling the Max CPUID Value Limit in the BIOS CPU configuration allows the kernel to boot. However, applying the patch in the link above did not allow the kernel to boot without this option being disabled. I applied directly to the current linux-2.6 source package, then built and installed it. Bug#538396: libsqlite3-0: Sqlite triggers bus error in apr-util test suite on sparc causing FTBFS
Package: libsqlite3-0 Version: 3.6.14.2-1 Severity: serious Hi, apr-util FTBFSs because the test suite fails with a SIGBUS in libsqlite3-0 on sparc. This even happens to apr-util 1.3.4+dfsg-2, which is now in testing (and built fine in May [1]). Since the build in May was with 3.6.13-1, I assume this has been broken in a later sqlite version, but it could also be a compiler issue. The problem appears both with 3.6.14.2-1 and 3.6.16-1. I'll try again tomorrow with both patch1 and patch2 (this was just patch1), and see if that makes a difference. Did appyling these patches fix the issue for you? Alternatively you could just test 2.6.30 from unstable. Sorry, I can't remember if the patch worked, but I think it did. However, 2.6.30 is working just fine (which I'm using now). Thanks, closing the bug, then. Cheers, Moritz ---End Message---

Bug#520095: removes the toplevel mountpoint directories and fails to start the next time
Hi Michael, (the following holds for both autofs v4 and v5) usually the daemon creates these directories on startup and removes them on exit. If you do not want that to happen, it suffices to mark the directory as u-w: ] r...@apocatequil:/etc# grep ^/misc /etc/auto.master ] /misc /etc/auto.misc ] r...@apocatequil:/etc# ls -ld /misc ] ls: cannot access /misc: No such file or directory ] r...@apocatequil:/etc# /etc/init.d/autofs start ] Starting automount: done. ] r...@apocatequil:/etc# ls -ld /misc ] drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 2009-07-25 16:08 /misc ] r...@apocatequil:/etc# /etc/init.d/autofs stop ] Stopping automount: done. ] r...@apocatequil:/etc# ls -ld /misc ] ls: cannot access /misc: No such file or directory ] r...@apocatequil:/etc# mkdir /misc; chmod 0555 /misc ] r...@apocatequil:/etc# ls -ld /misc ] dr-xr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2009-07-25 16:08 /misc ] r...@apocatequil:/etc# /etc/init.d/autofs start ] Starting automount: done. ] r...@apocatequil:/etc# ls -ld /misc ] drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 2009-07-25 16:08 /misc ] r...@apocatequil:/etc# /etc/init.d/autofs stop ] Stopping automount: done. ] r...@apocatequil:/etc# ls -ld /misc ] dr-xr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2009-07-25 16:08 /misc ] r...@apocatequil:/etc# So I presume the real problem here is that autofs cannot create the /net mountpoint upon startup. This is not a very usual case, because the only possibility I can think of is a NFS root with root squashing enabled (but how can it remove that directory then when it's going down?)... I'm not sure if this justifies grave. But I admit that it's not in the documentation (at least nowhere I know of) and that the initscript startup exit code is not helpful. Bug#520095: removes the toplevel mountpoint directories and fails to start the next time
Hi, As I mentioned before, the ONLY way to stop it from removing the top-level dir is to chattr+i it. ah, autofs4 indeed removes the directory even without write permission (v5 doesn't), I thought I'd checked that, too. But this behaviour has been around for ages, and I still don't understand why it fails for you (i.e. why is root unable to create /net, but perfectly able to remove it later?). Could you please explain what's going on there? Regards, Jan signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Could you please explain what's going on there? No idea. If I were knew, I'd attach a patch for this issue. The code is quite.. funny and fragile, I tried to understand it right before submitting a bugreport but that wasn't quite successful. I ran it under strace - pure automountd, without any startu scripts but with the same args. It never ever tried to mkdir or rename. It created two random dirs in /tmp, mounted a tmpfs over one of them (running mount(8)), bind-mounted it on second dir, next did stat(/misc) (which returned ENOENT) and immediately gave up returning it can't mount /misc. I just installed autofs5 (I didn't know it exist) - and that one seems to be ok (it gives me another error in daemon.log, like this: Jul 25 19:23:45 gandalf automount[15097]: \ syntax error in nsswitch config near [ syntax error ] , but that's another matter). I've one guess pending still: my /tmp is tmpfs, maybe it checks for st_rdev somehow, and does not do anything useful if /tmp and / are on different filesystems? But I've to run now, can't verify it today.. perhaps tomorrow. Thanks! /mjt -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#538189: [dovecot-antispam] incompatibility with dbox mail storage backend
severity 538189 important tags 538189 + help thanks Hi Eugene, Since we haven't heard from Johannes on this yet, I'm downgrading the severity of this one slightly. It is an important issue, and I agree it definitely shouldn't crash dovecot under any circumstance, but I also think in this case it doesn't warrant a severity that would prevent this package from migrating to testing when dovecot 1.2 does. If we do that, it will instantly be broken for _everyone_, and I don't really see a justification for also breaking the systems that it does currently work with. I presume Johannes doesn't currently have a system using dbox, and I don't have one either. He was however extraordinarily prompt at applying the patches I sent for #537765, so I suspect if someone can provide a clean and tested patch to fix this then it will be dealt with in much the same way. On second thought, I think this is the way to go. The test wanted to test if the core module detection in dh-make-perl works. Thta detection heavily relies to Module::CoreList, so a simple test would work fine. Perhaps adding a negative test about 'Foo::Bar' being core would suffice to guarantee that there is no a 'return 1' type of 'detection'. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. As a consequence, all sorts of package managing scripts (debsums etc.pp.) broke, and nothing moved. I was able to manuall delete the offending package using dpkg, and get things going again, but I don't know if that's within reach of the end user because, at that point, the system was mostly non-functional because about half of all my packages were not correctly installed. I pretty much adhered to the release notes about upgrading from Etch to Lenny, and used Lenny's aptitude to do most of the job. I also recorded the upgrade process using 'script'. Here's an excerpt from that recording: Unpacking replacement perl ... dpkg: error processing /srv/apt/archives/perl_5.10.0-19_amd64.deb (--unpack): trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/ptardiff', which is also in package libarchive-tar-perl dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe) After I figured out that simply overwriting the file using --force didn't seem to do the trick, I removed the package manually: # dpkg --purge --force-depends libarchive-tar-perl dpkg: libarchive-tar-perl: dependency problems, but removing anyway as you request: spamassassin depends on libarchive-tar-perl; however: Package libarchive-tar-perl is to be removed. Package perl-modules which provides libarchive-tar-perl is not configured yet. (Reading database ... 238308 files and directories currently installed.) Removing libarchive-tar-perl ... Bug#538233: gscan2pdf exports blank PDF files - debug output
2009/7/25 Robert Kawecki thewande...@gim11.pl: gscan2pdf was run as: gscan2pdf --debug debug.log 21 What I did was importing a JPEG file (tried many times with arbitrary scanned and on-disk images, the problem persists), choosing Save and saving it on disk as PDF, 300 dpi, 95 embedded JPEG quality. I'm attaching the debug log to this message. Is the jpg imported correctly, i.e. can you see it in the image window? Argument \x{30}\x{2c}... isn't numeric in numeric eq (==) at /usr/bin/gscan2pdf line 1769. is a very strange error message for that line number. Would you mind posting that line of the code to make sure that it is the same line that I am looking at.
