Bug#541179: dpkg installs/removes packages although database is locked
Package: dpkg Version: 1.15.3.1 Severity: serious Hi, today I noticed something that I consider really serious: I've started an aptitude purge gimp, without noticing that I had an aptitude dist-upgrade (waiting for input, because of apt-listchanges) running in another terminal, which I forgot to finish the day before. Now would I have expected would be to stop and warn me about the locked dpkg database. But in reality aptitude proceeded (with displaying an error!) and dpkg also proceeded and removed the package. While still having the dist-upgrade open I can reproduce this: % sudo dpkg -P python3.1 (Reading database ... 260455 files and directories currently installed.) Removing python3.1 ... Purging configuration files for python3.1 ... Processing triggers for man-db ... Processing triggers for menu ... Processing triggers for desktop-file-utils ... However I guess that the dpkg status database is locked and if I remove packages it should therefore not update the database. But it does: % dpkg -l python3.1 Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold | Status=Not/Inst/Cfg-files/Unpacked/Failed-cfg/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend |/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad) ||/ Name Version Description +++--- pn python3.1none (no description available) Given that I have a dist-upgrade running I fear that my dpkg database will be inconsistent when this is finished, so this problem is quiet serious. Function `ldap_get_values' implicitly converted to pointer at ldap2zone.c:308 This is often due to a missing function prototype definition. For more information, see [2]. Though it is guaranteed that this codepath will cause a segfault on certain architectures, it is not guaranteed that this codepath would ever be executed (e.g., if the returned pointer is never dereferenced). However, this bug does prevent the ia64 buildd from successfully building this package, resulting in a practical FTBFS issue and warranting the serious severity. The libldap API has been updated and many functions used by the ldap plugin are now deprecated. This package should either update to the new API or define LDAP_DEPRECATED to continue using the deprecated interfaces. This patch implements the lazy solution. Bug#541188: no login possible after some time (using ldap, krb5, ssh, login)
Package: libpam-runtime Version: 1.0.1-5+lenny1 Severity: serious After some time we get this message when trying to login to a debian node: r...@debian-host: ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host We have some clusters with debian running and about 30 nodes have this problem. It makes no difference, if I try as root (= without ldap) or as a real user, if I use password or public key auth. If I go to the local console (i.e. tty1) and login as a NORMAL user, the whole authentication works again. Though, locally I CANNOT login as root, until I login as a normal user before. After I logged into as a normal user, I can also ssh into the machine again. It seems that pam has a bug that is triggered after some time, that forgets about the users: --- Aug 8 21:55:01 ikr3 /USR/SBIN/CRON[19476]: (root) CMD ([ -x /usr/lib/sysstat/sa1 ] { [ -r $DEFAULT ] . $DEFAULT ; [ $ENABLED = true ] exec /usr/lib/sysstat/sa1 $SA1_OPTIONS 1 1 ; }) Aug 8 21:55:01 ikr3 CRON[19474]: (pam_krb5): none: pam_sm_setcred: entry (0x8004) Aug 8 21:55:01 ikr3 CRON[19474]: (pam_krb5): none: pam_sm_setcred: exit (success) Aug 8 22:00:01 ikr3 CRON[19489]: (pam_krb5): none: pam_sm_setcred: entry (0x8002) Aug 8 22:00:01 ikr3 CRON[19489]: (pam_krb5): none: no context found, creating one Aug 8 22:00:01 ikr3 CRON[19489]: (pam_krb5): none: ignoring low-UID user (0 1001) Aug 8 22:00:01 ikr3 CRON[19489]: (pam_krb5): none: pam_sm_setcred: exit (failure) Aug 8 22:00:01 ikr3 /USR/SBIN/CRON[19491]: (root) CMD (/usr/sbin/ntpdate time.ethz.ch /dev/null) Aug 8 22:00:01 ikr3 CRON[19489]: (pam_krb5): none: pam_sm_setcred: entry (0x8004) Aug 8 22:00:01 ikr3 CRON[19489]: (pam_krb5): none: pam_sm_setcred: exit (success) Aug 8 22:00:33 ikr3 smartd[2728]: Device: /dev/hda, SMART Usage Attribute: 194 Temperature_Celsius changed from 196 to 203 Aug 8 22:05:01 ikr3 CRON[19505]: (pam_krb5): none: pam_sm_setcred: entry (0x8002) Aug 8 22:05:01 ikr3 CRON[19505]: (pam_krb5): none: no context found, creating one Aug 8 22:05:01 ikr3 CRON[19505]: (pam_krb5): none: ignoring low-UID user (0 1001) Aug 8 22:05:01 ikr3 CRON[19505]: (pam_krb5): none: pam_sm_setcred: exit (failure) Aug 8 22:05:01 ikr3 /USR/SBIN/CRON[19507]: (root) CMD ([ -x /usr/lib/sysstat/sa1 ] { [ -r $DEFAULT ] . $DEFAULT ; [ $ENABLED = true ] exec /usr/lib/sysstat/sa1 $SA1_OPTIONS 1 1 ; }) Aug 8 22:05:01 ikr3 CRON[19505]: (pam_krb5): none: pam_sm_setcred: entry (0x8004) Aug 8 22:05:01 ikr3 CRON[19505]: (pam_krb5): none: pam_sm_setcred: exit (success) Aug 8 22:15:01 ikr3 CRON[19532]: (pam_krb5): none: pam_sm_setcred: entry (0x8002) Aug 8 22:15:01 ikr3 CRON[19532]: (pam_krb5): none: no context found, creating one Aug 8 22:15:01 ikr3 CRON[19532]: (pam_krb5): none: ignoring low-UID user (0 1001) Aug 8 22:15:01 ikr3 CRON[19532]: (pam_krb5): none: pam_sm_setcred: exit (failure) Aug 8 22:15:01 ikr3 /USR/SBIN/CRON[19534]: (root) CMD ([ -x /usr/lib/sysstat/sa1 ] { [ -r $DEFAULT ] . $DEFAULT ; [ $ENABLED = true ] exec /usr/lib/sysstat/sa1 $SA1_OPTIONS 1 1 ; }) Aug 8 22:15:01 ikr3 CRON[19532]: (pam_krb5): none: pam_sm_setcred: entry (0x8004) Aug 8 22:15:01 ikr3 CRON[19532]: (pam_krb5): none: pam_sm_setcred: exit (success) Aug 8 22:17:01 ikr3 CRON[19538]: User not known to the underlying authentication module Aug 8 22:25:01 ikr3 CRON[19561]: User not known to the underlying authentication module Aug 8 22:30:34 ikr3 smartd[2728]: Device: /dev/hda, SMART Usage Attribute: 194 Temperature_Celsius changed from 203 to 196 Aug 8 22:35:01 ikr3 CRON[19588]: User not known to the underlying authentication module Aug 8 22:39:40 ikr3 postfix/pickup[19602]: fatal: file /etc/postfix/main.cf: parameter default_privs: unknown user name value: nobody Aug 8 22:39:41 ikr3 postfix/master[2714]: warning: process /usr/lib/postfix/pickup pid 19602 exit status 1 Aug 8 22:39:41 ikr3 postfix/master[2714]: warning: /usr/lib/postfix/pickup: bad command startup -- throttling Aug 8 22:40:41 ikr3 postfix/pickup[19604]: fatal: file /etc/postfix/main.cf: parameter default_privs: unknown user name value: nobody Aug 8 22:40:42 ikr3 postfix/master[2714]: warning: process /usr/lib/postfix/pickup pid 19604 exit status 1 Aug 8 22:40:42 ikr3 postfix/master[2714]: warning: /usr/lib/postfix/pickup: bad command startup -- throttling Aug 8 22:41:42 ikr3 postfix/pickup[19609]: fatal: file /etc/postfix/main.cf: parameter default_privs: unknown user name value: nobody Aug 8 22:41:43 ikr3 postfix/master[2714]: warning: process /usr/lib/postfix/pickup pid 19609 exit status 1 Aug 8 22:41:43 ikr3 postfix/master[2714]: warning: /usr/lib/postfix/pickup: bad command startup -- throttling Aug 8 22:42:43 ikr3 postfix/pickup[19614]: fatal: file /etc/postfix/main.cf: parameter default_privs: unknown user name value: nobody Aug 8 22:42:44 ikr3 postfix/master[2714]: warning: process /usr/lib/postfix/pickup pid 19614 exit status 1

Pardon me for not testing aptitude dist-upgrade, that would have been somewhat inconvenient. But AFAICS in your example dpkg had not even a chance to run during the aptitude dist-upgrade, so it cannot be blamed for not acquiring a lock. Now would I have expected would be to stop and warn me about the locked dpkg database. If it did not do that, then the database was almost surely not locked in the first place. Aug 11:17 /var/lib/dpkg/lock (there was also an aptitude lock file, but this is of little relevance for this). The files are always present, that does not imply the db is currently locked. Notable is that dpkg was not doing much, except waiting for apt-parsechanges to finish. So probably the lock handling is somewhat borked with respect to Dpkg::Pre-Install-Pkgs commands. | % LANG=C sudo dpkg -P ed | dpkg: status database area is locked by another process ` Yeah, but this is somewhat the wrong testcase. dpkg should not have even run when the Dpkg::Pre-Install-Pkgs commands are run (refer to man apt.conf). Bug#536384: perl-modules must depend on perl-base (= 5.10.0-24) or ship the changelog.Debian.gz

[...] I agree with you that this is a cure worse than the disease. Furthermore, as Adrian stated, it has problems with binNMUs. There are ways around that, have the perl package provide a name which maps to the debian version less NMUs (either by manually updating debian/control, or an automated process which removes bin NMUs from the version). Another alternative, certainly the simplest, would be to remove perl-modules entirely and have those arch-indep parts included in the perl package. perl could transitionally provide perl-modules. The packages versions of perl/perl-modules were never intended to be disjoint--the split was intended only to reduce redundancy in the archive. Bug#541077: [libc6]
On Tue, 11 Aug 2009, Peter Fritzsche wrote: What removes it? I suspect it's not dpkg... (or we would have noticed it already) Hm, only started dpkg. So I suspected it. Did your machine crash/lose power during an upgrade? work. The only thing I did in between was to reboot. Maybe it is/was a filesystem bug... which would be cruel. I will mark this bug as unreproducible for now. Maybe the bug is a missing fsync() in dpkg in some cases... but currently it looks like a filesystem problem yes. Bug#541203: [Pkg-haskell-maintainers] Bug#541203: haskell-edison-api: Fails to install due to broken dependencies
Hi Iain, Am Mittwoch, den 12.08.2009, 14:01 +0100 schrieb Iain Lane: I don't quite know what's wrong with this package, hence filing a bug instead of just fixing it myself... I've rebuilt it on Karmic and noticed that the dependencies aren't autogenerated correctly for -dev; namely there should be a dep on libghc6-mtl-dev that isn't there. libghc6-edison-api-dev Depends: ghc6 Depends: ghc6 Depends: libc6 Depends: libffi5 Depends: libgmp3c2 Suggests: libghc6-edison-api-doc Suggests: libghc6-edison-api-prof Recommends: libghc6-edison-core-dev This means that the package fails to install at the postinst (ghc-pkg register) stage. I've hardcoded the dependency in Ubuntu for now, but obviously the correct solution should be found of possible. I can not reproduce it on Debian unstable: haskell-edison-api-1.2.1 $ debc|grep libghc6-mtl-dev Depends: ghc6 (= 6.10.4-1), ghc6 ( 6.10.4+), libghc6-mtl-dev (= 1.1.0.2-7+b1), libghc6-mtl-dev ( 1.1.0.2+), libc6 (= 2.3.3), libffi5 (= 3.0.4), libgmp3c2 It rather looks like something goes wrong in dh_haskell_depends on Ubuntu, and you’ll need to have a closer look at that. Maybe add some debugging output to functions like providing_package_for_ghc6() in /usr/share/haskell-devscripts/Dh_Haskell.sh and see if it works as expected. Bug#527523: Test bulids fine
Cyril Brulebois k...@debian.org (22/07/2009): I'm planning to look at it, probably after I arrived at DebConf. Don't hesitate to get back to me in a few days if you see no comments coming from me. Unfortunately, I haven't had much time until now. A few comments: - your changelog entry doesn't close the bug we're interested in (#527523) - you don't mention you bumped Standards-Version, and that you added ${misc:Depends} - using .install files would make it trivial to install files were they belong, instead of find … -exec …. - it looks like with the new upstream release, files are no more ancient that they used to me (2007 → 2006). Could you please ask upstream to update its build environment? In the meanwhile, you could automatically copy config.guess and config.sub from the autotools-dev package before configuring, and remove them in clean, to keep the diff out of the Debian diff. (Note that this is based on the source debdiff only, I didn't do any build test.) Mraw, KiBi. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#541286: Update-grub guesses wrong root
Package: grub-pc Version: 1.96+20090725-1 Severity: critical Justification: system unbootable after update Hi, after updating grub-pc, the system was unbootable. The problem is, that update-grub is run in postinst and it guesses the wrong boot partition. I have a mixed IDE/SATA system and the disks are ordered differently by the BIOS and Linux. For this reason I have set the label SYSBOOT on the boot partition and added set root=SYSBOOT to /boot/grub/grub.cfg. This works like a charm, however: - update-grub is called in postinst and overwrites grub.cfg (naughty!) - I haven't found a way to configure the boot partition for update-grub to use. I think the only real solution is for update-grub to stop thinking it'd be smarter than it actually is. A lot of automagic is done which broke my boot a view times already. There is no straightforward way to tell grub to do as I say and make it obey its master's wishes. This `smart' system made me do too much working around and circumventing, already. Combined with the fact that it is also very inflexible (e.g. only one kernel cmdline for all entries), it is my opinion that it should be replaced by something very different, which does less guessing and gives more power to the user. If you don't agree, at least make it configurable so I can prevent update-grub from ever running. Please let me configure my system as I like. Cheers, harry signature.asc Description: PGP signature
Bug#541291: console-setup: No special characters after update
Package: console-setup Version: 1.44 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable After an upgrade of console-setup, most special characters don't work anymore (öäüß°). Most of them just produce a beep. `ä' doesn't beep but also doesn't output anything. 'ß' behaves like the up-key (previous entry in history). Before I had version 1.36 which didn't have these problems. Maybe the bug is a missing fsync() in dpkg in some cases... but currently it looks like a filesystem problem yes. dpkg does not directly extract the control files, it uses dpkg-deb and that ones uses tar to extract those files. So either filesystem or tar related, but very improvable to be dpkg itself. regards, guillem -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#541286: Update-grub guesses wrong root
Am Donnerstag, den 13.08.2009, 02:57 +0200 schrieb Harald Braumann: Hi, after updating grub-pc, the system was unbootable. The problem is, that update-grub is run in postinst and it guesses the wrong boot partition. I have a mixed IDE/SATA system and the disks are ordered differently by the BIOS and Linux. That's why you sometimes have to fix /boot/grub/device.map yourself. It gets only recreated if you run grub-install with --recheck or directly grub-mkdevicemap. But anyway we use UUIDs in the default grub.cfg so it shouldn't matter how your disks are ordered in device.map The search --set --fs-uuid line sets the root variable to the device with that UUID. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#541296: migrationtools: migrate_services.pl generates invalid entry for tcp/udp echo
Package: migrationtools Version: 47-6 Severity: grave Justification: causes non-serious data loss The fix for bug#307618 actually introduced another issue. Any system that used migrationtools to load services will be unable to upgrade to slapd 2.4.17-1 (actually, anything newer than 2.4.15). Reference bug#541292 for details. But essentially, `cn=echo+ipServiceProtocol=tcp+ipServiceProtocol=udp' is an illegal value. At first glance, it seems that replacing the + with _ allows the file to load, but I'm not sure if that's sufficient for everything to work properly. I don't know if this dn: is used or just needs to be unique. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-2-686 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages migrationtools depends on: hi ldap-utils [openldap-utils] 2.4.11-1 OpenLDAP utilities ii perl 5.10.0-24 Larry Wall's Practical Extraction migrationtools recommends no packages. Bug#541297: could not open failure message template ${prefix}/share/masqmail/tpl/failmsg.tpl
Package: masqmail Version: 0.2.21-7 Severity: grave Justification: causes non-serious data loss The error message could not open failure message template ${prefix}/share/masqmail/tpl/failmsg.tpl appears in masqmail.log when message delivery fails. It seems it tries to open the error template with the string ${prefix} contained literally in the file name... Probably it's not properly expanded in the configure machinery. I have a vague recollection of someone else talking about a similar problem with another program -- unfortunately I don't remember the conclusion. I have seen these errors now and then for some time; but I didn't pay attention to them... Only now I realized that this actually means the mail could not be delivered, and I won't get a failure notice -- I wonder how many mails I lost because of that :-( I consider this a kind of data loss -- thus the severity. (BTW, it would be nice if the actual message IDs were printed in the logs, not only the internal ID -- this would make it much easier to find the referenced mails...) Actually the cause of delivery failure was temporary in this case, so the messages simply could have been left in the queue, instead of generating a failure notice -- but I guess that depends on how the external mail server handles it, not on masqmail's own policy?... -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.29 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=de_DE (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages masqmail depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.27 Debian configuration management sy ii libc6 2.9-23 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libglib2.0-0 2.20.1-2 The GLib library of C routines ii libident 0.22-3 simple RFC1413 client library - ru ii liblockfile1 1.08-3 NFS-safe locking library, includes ii netbase 4.37 Basic TCP/IP networking system ii update-inetd 4.31 inetd configuration file updater masqmail recommends no packages.
