Package: apache2.2-common
Version: 2.2.9-10+lenny2
Severity: grave
Justification: causes data loss

I've got a bunch of calendar clients configured to download and upload
icalendar files to a web location backed by mod_dav.

Occasionally there will be an error when one client is uploading the calendar
file, which cases the file to be deleted:

 10.0.0.1 alice [22/Apr/2009:13:42:12 +0100] GET /cal/bob HTTP/1.1 200 20480
text/calendar - Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.8.1.21)
Gecko/20090302 Lightning/0.9 Thunderbird/2.0.0.21
 10.0.0.1 alice [22/Apr/2009:13:39:51 +0100] PUT /cal/bob HTTP/1.1 500 390
text/html - Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.8.1.21)
Gecko/20090302 Lightning/0.9 Thunderbird/2.0.0.21
 10.0.0.1 bob [22/Apr/2009:13:44:54 +0100] GET /cal/bob HTTP/1.1 404 289
text/html - Evolution/2.24.5

Unfortunately, the only message that appears in the error log file is the
mysterious message:

[Wed Apr 22 13:44:53 2009] [error] [client 10.0.0.1] Could not get next bucket
brigade [500, #0]

IMO, mod_dav should replace files not by truncating them, but by writing out a
temporary file and then renaming it over the original file. That way, files
can be replaced atomically, and so the failure to write the file does not
result in the loss of the data.

Unfortunately I have no way to reproduce this problem on demand. From my
recollection, it seems to happen about once every two months. I am erring
on the side of cauting WRT the bug severity, please feel free to downgrade
if you disagree.

Package: amarok
Version: 2.2.1-1
Severity: normal

After todays upgrade amarok started to play songs in playlist order.
Earlier it was possible to play them in random order. I tried to choose
randomization by composition, album or off. Nothing works.

Package: evolution-exchange
Version: 2.26.3-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

evolution-exchange depends on evolution ( 2.27.0). However evolution
2.28.0-2 has just been uploaded to unstable. Hence evolution-exchange
now conflicts with evolution.

There is collatoral damage. The gnome metapackage Depends on
evolution-exchange. Therefore evolution-exchange cannot simply be
removed to resolve the conflict with evolution, without breaking the
entire Debian-default gnome installation.

Consequently evolution is currently largely unusable.

4.4.2-1 with latest eglibc to see if it is the culprit
or rebuild against eglibc-2.9. could you do this as a test?
 yes, build started

the gcc 4.4.2-2 built with eglibc 2.9-25 has not the problem and current
gcc 4.4.2-1 is built with eglibc 2.9-26 [0]. should i try building
4.4.2-1 with eglibc 2.10.1-5 or are we convinced it is NPTL?

At least we are convinced it's eglibc 2.10.1, not 100% sure it is due to
 NPTL.

I have done some more tests, showing it's a bit more complicated than
 that. apt-get from stable/testing/unstable:
 - works with libstdc++6 built against eglibc 2.9
 - segfaults with libstdc++6 built against eglibc 2.10.1

Then I tried to rebuild apt against the broken libstdc++6.
 Surprisingly this new apt-get:
 - works with libstdc++6 built against eglibc 2.10.1
 - segfaults with libstdc++6 built against eglibc 2.9

So in short, it seems that using eglibc 2.10.1 to build libstdc++6
triggers an ABI change on this library. I haven't investigated more for
now, I am not sure when I'll have time to do it.

This is not surprising, Dave has already pointed out that the debian
libstdc++6 testsuite run clearly has an ABI failure e.g.
 ~~~
 FAIL: abi_check
 ~~~

I don't have a build around, but isn't this due to the one symbol
accidentally exported in an earlier libstdc++ version?

   * Address PR libstdc++/39491, removing __signbitl from the libstdc++6
 symbols file on hppa.

I confirm, it's what I see in the testsuite log:

| 77
| __signbitl
| version status: incompatible
| GLIBCXX_3.4
| type: function
| status: added

Package: libgimp2.0-dev
Version: 2.6.7-1
Severity: serious
Justification: The listed file appears to be linked against the C library,
User: lintian-ma...@debian.org
Usertags: missing-dependency-on-libc

All shared libraries and compiled binaries must be run through dpkg-shlibdeps to
find out any libraries they are linked against (often via the dh_shlibdeps
debhelper command). The package containing these files must then depend on
${shlibs:Depends} in debian/control to get the proper package dependencies for
those libraries.

Refer to Debian Policy Manual section 8.6 (Dependencies between the library and
other packages - the shlibs system) for details.

,[ 8.6 Dependencies between the library and other packages - the shlibs
system ]
| If a package contains a binary or library which links to a shared library, we
| must ensure that when the package is installed on the system, all of the
| libraries needed are also installed. This requirement led to the creation of
the
| shlibs system, which is very simple in its design: any package which provides
a
| shared library also provides information on the package dependencies required
to
| ensure the presence of this library, and any package which uses a shared
library
| uses this information to determine the dependencies it requires. The files
which
| contain the mapping from shared libraries to the necessary dependency
| information are called shlibs files.
|
| Thus, when a package is built which contains any shared libraries, it must
| provide a shlibs file for other packages to use, and when a package is built
| which contains any shared libraries or compiled binaries, it must run
| dpkg-shlibdeps on these to determine the libraries used and hence the
| dependencies needed by this package.
`

,[ 8.6.2 How to use dpkg-shlibdeps and the shlibs files ]
| Put a call to dpkg-shlibdeps into your debian/rules file. If your package
| contains only compiled binaries and libraries (but no scripts), you can use a
| command such as:
|
| dpkg-shlibdeps debian/tmp/usr/bin/* debian/tmp/usr/sbin/* \
|debian/tmp/usr/lib/*
|
| Otherwise, you will need to explicitly list the compiled binaries and
| libraries.[53]
|
| This command puts the dependency information into the debian/substvars file,
| which is then used by dpkg-gencontrol. You will need to place a
| ${shlibs:Depends} variable in the Depends field in the control file for this
to
| work.

Hi,
the following CVE (Common Vulnerabilities Exposures) id was
published for gimp.

CVE-2009-3909[0]:
| Secunia Research has discovered a vulnerability in Gimp, which can be
| exploited by malicious people to potentially compromise a user's
| system.
|
| The vulnerability is caused by an integer overflow error within the
| read_channel_data() function in plug-ins/file-psd/psd-load.c. This
| can be exploited to cause a heap-based buffer overflow by e.g.
| tricking a user into opening a specially crafted PSD file.

If you fix the vulnerability please also make sure to include the
CVE id in your changelog entry.
Don't forget to also help prepare stable and oldstable uploads to address this
issue.

Hi,
the following CVE (Common Vulnerabilities Exposures) id was
published for gimp.

CVE-2009-1570[0]:
| Secunia Research has discovered a vulnerability in Gimp, which can be
| exploited by malicious people to potentially compromise a user's
| system.
|
| The vulnerability is caused by an integer overflow error within the
| ReadImage() function in plug-ins/file-bmp/bmp-read.c. This can be
| exploited to cause a heap-based buffer overflow by e.g. tricking a
| user into opening a specially crafted BMP file.

If you fix the vulnerability please also make sure to include the
CVE id in your changelog entry.

Patch:
http://git.gnome.org/cgit/gimp/commit/?id=e3afc99b2fa7aeddf0dba4778663160a5bc682d3

Hi,
OpenCV wrongly defines int64 type on 64 bit architectures, see upstream
bug #2823918 (with patch available):

Bug#557359: Can't detect multipath devices

2009-11-21 Thread Guido Günther
Package: grub-common
Version: 1.97+20091115-1
Severity: critical
File: /usr/sbin/grub-probe

Hi,
grub-probe is unable to handle multipath devices:

This breaks upgrades from Lenny to sid. The multipath map is:

The server seemed to have problems with connections being dropped before
data was transfered. This caused blank or incomplete pages for the clients.

Since this is a production system I back-rev'ed to a previous version.

It seems like it doesn't segfault anymore, no problems so far. Tested

Closing it now, thanks (forgot to close it together with 543525).

Looks like you forgot about 483971 and 442382.
and maybe even others. Haven't looked this multipath issue now all up.
But i remembered it was you who has interest in multipath support inside
debian-installer and so grub2 too.
I'm a bit unsure if I should just merge this with 483971 or reassign at
GRUB Legacy, where the dummy grub package still is, and add a debconf
note that gets shown when multipath is detected and tells people to keep
Legacy for now.

But it still looks like that you're the only one for whom multipath is
important. (Well and Frans who considers this as a blocker, but it
didn't block the switch to grub2 as default for d-i alpha1)

Bug#557380: f-spot: FTBFS due to latest libflickrnet changes

Hi,

quoting the changelog for libflickrnet (1:2.2.0-2):
| libflickrnet (1:2.2.0-2) unstable; urgency=low
|
|* debian/control,
| debian/rules,

|* debian/rules,
| debian/flickrnet.pc,
| debian/libflickrnet2.2-cil.installcligac:
| + CLI Policy 0.7 install location
|* debian/control:
| + Remove obsolete Replaces libflickrnet2.2-cil
|  -- Jo Shields direct...@apebox.org  Fri, 06 Nov 2009 09:16:42 +

AFAICT, it means you have to additionally Build-Depend on its new -dev
package (libflickrnet-cil-dev) but also to drop the “-2.2” version in
extensions/Exporters/FlickrExport/Makefile*

I've just tried that on my kfreebsd-i386 porter box and it went fine.

Example of FTBFS, same arch:

Yeah, this has been fixed in git. Apparently we won't upload it straight

Nope, I didn't. This one is different as it breaks upgrades from

Don't think so. Multipath is run in enterprise environments where
people are much more conservative regarding upgrades. I'm starting to
get reports from etch-lenny upgrades so don't expect many others to

It is not different. The older ones were reassigned to grub-common and
you filed this against grub-common (actually even grub-probe).
If it's more important then wishlist then the severity of that bug needs
to be changed and not a new one filed which exactly says the same: to
implement multipath support inside grub-probe.

Seems like I have to take it literarily that you get the reports.
The debian-testing mailing list were all upgrade-reports end doestn't
say anything about multipath back to 2008/12.

Bug#530626: Why not rerelease the already packaged 0.5.3 for Sid?

2009-11-21 Thread Jonas Smedegaard

Hi,

I notice that the more than a year newer 0.5.3 have been packaged for
experimental.

Why not release that (or the even newer 0.5.4) for Sid? Is the 0.5
series perhaps considered unstable? If so, do you happen to know when a
0.6 release is expected to be released?

Kind regards,

 - Jonas

Package: perl-suid
Version: 5.10.1-7
Severity: serious

Although 5.10.1-7 fixed the missing libc6 dependency (#553259),
I still managed to miss this:

dpkg-shlibdeps: error: couldn't find library libperl.so.5.10 needed by
debian/build/perl-suid/usr/bin/sperl5.10.1 (ELF format: 'elf32-i386'; RPATH:
'').
Note: libraries are not searched in other binary packages that do not have any
shlibs or symbols file.
To help dpkg-shlibdeps find private libraries, you might need to set
LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

so perl-suid is missing a dependency on libperl5.10 on *i386.
The other architectures have libperl5.10 in perl-base, so they are OK.

I believe the problem is that I'm using

 dpkg-shlibdeps -S$(srcdir)/$(build)/libperl$(version)/usr/lib

when it should be just

 dpkg-shlibdeps -S$(srcdir)/$(build)/libperl$(version)

(and similarly for perl-base, but that doesn't actually break anything.)

Package: usemod-wiki

Severity: serious

Usertags: dir-or-file-in-var-www

Debian packages should not install files under /var/www. This is not
one of the /var directories in the File Hierarchy Standard and is
under the control of the local administrator. Packages should not
assume that it is the document root for a web server; it is very
common for users to change the default document root and packages
should not assume that users will keep any particular setting.

Packages that want to make files available via an installed web server
should instead put instructions for the local administrator in a
README.Debian file and ideally include configuration fragments for
common web servers such as Apache.

As an exception, packages are permitted to create the /var/www
directory due to its past history as the default document root, but
should at most copy over a default file in postinst for a new install.

Refer to Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (The /var Hierarchy) for
details.

One solution that works is to put configuration files into
/etc/package_name, put static content, if any, into
/usr/{share,lib}/package_name, then create /var/lib/package name
as home for the package, and symlink the files from /etc and /usr/
into the /var/lib/package_name. Then create a simple set of
configuration snippets for popular web servers (for example, files one
may link into /etc/apache2/conf.d) and put them into
/etc/package_name. This way user modifiable files stil live in /etc,
and a simple operation can make the package go live.

Filed as serious, since this is a violation of the FHS (which is part
of policy), and also since a package with these files will currently
get this package rejected. See
  http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2009/10/msg4.html
for details. This means the package has been deemed too buggy to be in
Debian.

Bug#557425: lenny-squeeze upgrade - system no longer bootable

2009-11-21 Thread Josip Rodin
Package: grub-pc
Severity: grave

I'm typing this from Windows because the squeeze upgrade a few minutes ago
rendered all my Linux GRUB menu entries useless - they all report command
not found either for linux or for initrd.

During the upgrade, I saw three debconf prompts, and just pressed enter on
all of them. I did not want to change the kernel parameters because there
was seemingly no need to do so, and I did not want to reinstall grub into
/dev/sda because I was hoping to avoid rendering my system unbootable
because of a new version of the bootloader. A quick google search indicates
this might be just like #497791, so it seems that the lack of reinstalling
was exactly what caused the problem. Well, that's just inane.

I'll go reboot and try to insert 'insmod linux' in those Linux menu entries
that no longer work.

Yep, that worked, together with the removal of the 'search' line which
complained about the no-floppy parameter. I logged in, ran
dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc, explicitly selected /dev/sda to install onto,
and after that rebooted, and all is well again.

So, please detect the situation where leaving the system in its current
state would render GRUB useless, and adjust the default accordingly.

The default setting should be to NOT screw the user. :)

yeah, shame on me. 006-2 is queued since last night already.
