Bug#728562: libgpars-groovy-java, groovy: error when trying to install together: overwriting /usr/share/groovy/lib/gpars.jar
Andreas, On Sun, 2013-11-03 at 02:34 +0100, Andreas Beckmann wrote: Package: libgpars-groovy-java,groovy Version: 2.1.6+dfsg-1 Severity: serious User: trei...@debian.org Usertags: edos-file-overwrite Architecture: amd64 Distribution: sid + experimental Hi, automatic installation tests of packages that share a file and at the same time do not conflict by their package dependency relationships has detected the following problem: Preparing to replace groovy 1.8.6-1 (using .../groovy_2.1.6+dfsg-1_all.deb) ... Unpacking replacement groovy ... dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/groovy_2.1.6+dfsg-1_all.deb (--unpack): trying to overwrite '/usr/share/groovy/lib/gpars.jar', which is also in package libgpars-groovy-java 0.10-1 This is a serious bug as it makes installation fail, and violates sections 7.6.1 and 10.1 of the policy. An optimal solution would consist in only one of the packages installing that file, and renaming or removing the file in the other package. Depending on the circumstances you might also consider Replace relations or file diversions. If the conflicting situation cannot be resolved then, as a last resort, the two packages have to declare a mutual Conflict. Please take into account that Replaces, Conflicts and diversions should only be used when packages provide different implementations for the same functionality. Whilst this may a priori be a failure of the Debian packaging rules, the situation stems from the fact that GPars used to be a totally separate thing from Groovy, but now the Groovy distribution includes and relies on GPars even though it is has a separate development line. I argue that the Debian package strategy may well be the underlying problem here because it does not allow multiple versions of artefacts as is standard practice in the JVM-verse. Whilst libgpars-groovy-java used to be a good idea, the gpars artefact should be an integral part of the groovy package from Groovy 2.0 onwards. Also worth noting that GPars 0.10 is ancient, we are now at 1.1 and wondering when to release 1.2. Here is a list of files that are known to be shared by both packages (according to the Contents file for sid/amd64, which may be slightly out of sync): /usr/share/groovy/lib/gpars.jar This raises the issue of why Debian has a single unnumbered artefact when the Java universe works with numbered artefacts so that different versions can be used in the same system. In particular, in order to have Gradle 1.x installed, Groovy 1.8.x must be installed, which means Groovy 2.1.x cannot be installed unless Gradle is removed. There is a viscous circle here leading to Debian being unable to support the Groovy infrastructure. Debian really needs to change it's Java and Groovy policies to enable multiple versions of artefacts. To be honest the current situation means most people ignore the Debian packaging system for Java and Groovy (and indeed Scala, Ceylon, Kotlin, Clojure, etc.) and use the language specific installations. For Groovy this means using GVM, which is a Bash based package installer which just requires some Java install at JAVA_HOME. Most people use the Oracle distribution, particularly those of us using Java 8 – which cannot be packaged by Debian for Unstable for sensible reasons. This bug is assigned to both packages. If you, the maintainers of the two packages in question, have agreed on which of the packages will resolve the problem please reassign the bug to that package. You may also register in the BTS that the other package is affected by the bug. Trivial patch is attached. Let me add that the hook then auto-generates a $RESUME device using the device UUID, which broke resume on my machine, where swap is in LVM. I am not sure, but this breakage and the similar reports #576490 and #568877 suggest that this is actually another, far more serious bug. Bug#683331: Missing dependency on net-tools
Hi, On Sun, Nov 03, 2013 at 05:57:07PM +, Daira Hopwood wrote: Hmm, apparently tahoe-lafs has been removed from testing due to this bug (see https://release.debian.org/britney/hints/auto-removals). Some warning would have been nice. There has been some on the debian-devel-announce list and such channels from the release team. The fix of adding the net-tools dependency is trivial, so I don't know how this slipped through the cracks. This bug has been fixed in the upcoming package update. It should be uploaded in the coming days. Sadly it has been a matter of days. But it wouldn't have avoided this removal, since it will bring a new bug regarding FHS support, which in Debian is a RC class one. I'll report it on the upstream bugtracker. I plan to get the package quickly updated to close this one, then tahoe-lafs should flaw into Jessie again. bert. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#728444: libfontconfig1: xpdf is broken by fontconfig version 2.11.0-1

Users should be aware that remaining with libfontconfig1 2.10.2-2 may block some security fixes, since many new packages are built with libfontconfig1 2.11.x thus depends on this version at least. Bug#728562: libgpars-groovy-java, groovy: error when trying to install together: overwriting /usr/share/groovy/lib/gpars.jar
Hi Russel, Thank you for your help in sorting this out. As I understand that means Debian has to package Groovy 1.x and 2.x separately. For the clarification, Debian can ship several versions of the same library. It's just avoided until it's absolutely necessary (junit 3 and 4, asm, servlet-api are some examples). jars in /usr/share/java are simply renamed to avoid collisions. Regarding Java 8, you may be interested to learn that it's now possible to build a Debian package of the official Java 8 preview release using java-package 0.53. I hope the groovy package in Debian will become a first class citizen in the Groovy ecosystem, we aren't there yet but if you know of people in the Groovy community interested in helping they are welcome! The rebuild has happened in the middle of a transition of some of the packages the lcgdm package build requires. lcgdm build requires gsoap. Gsoap has recently been updated from version 2.8.12 to version 2.8.16, which has caused a transition form libgsoap3 to libgsoap4. lcgdm also build requires cgsi-gsoap-dev, which in turn depends on gsoap. cgsi-gsoap has not yet been binnmued due to the gsoap transition. The lcgdm rebuild drags in both libgsoap4 (from the gsoap build requirement) and the old libgsoap3 (from the cgsi-gsoap-dev requirement) and then tries to link the cgsi-gsoap (built for libgsoap3) and libgsoap4 together and fails - which is the correct thing to do. Please retry again once the cgsi-gsoap binnmu due to the gsoap transition has been competed. Setting blocked-by the transition bug. Please update your dependencies to either use default-jdk or openjdk-7-jdk instead. On a related note, the following two dependencies look a bit odd: Depends: openjdk-6-jre | cacao-oj6-jre | java6-runtime, ..., openjdk-6-jdk Based on that, the first clause looks pretty redundant as openjdk-6-jdk implies openjdk-6-jre. ~Niels ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: jalview Source-Version: 2.7.dfsg-3 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of jalview, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive. Bug#728706: Debian-installer crashes on IA64 in HPVM (Integrity Virtual Machines)

Booting debian 7.x installer isos in an Integrity VM (virtualization on top of HP-UX/IA64) causes a guest crash after loading the initrd (the menu does work, and the crash happens regardless of selecting 'Install' or 'Expert'): So the kernel crashes somewhere. There is no real development for ia64 in Debian, so I'm not sure who can help. There is a 3911856 byte vm.core file which I presume is the dump mentioned in the console. Can you try if the crash util is able to read this? The following files are shipped by the syslog-ng-core package in sid: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 37 Oct 3 15:49 /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/syslog-ng.service - /lib/systemd/system/syslog-ng.service lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 37 Oct 3 15:49 /etc/systemd/system/syslog.service - /lib/systemd/system/syslog-ng.service -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 251 Oct 3 15:49 /lib/systemd/system/syslog-ng.service The symlinks in /etc/ are conffiles.
