 Hi,

during a test with piuparts I noticed your package failed to purge.

From the attached log (scroll to the bottom...):

   Removing fontconfig-config (2.11.0-3) ...
   Purging configuration files for fontconfig-config (2.11.0-3) ...
rmdir: failed to remove '/etc/fonts/conf.d': No such file or directory
dpkg: error processing package fontconfig-config (--purge):

Thanks. I'm trying to upload a new version which fixes this and another
FTBFS bug but I'm having adventures with the ftp masters today.

Bug#739743: FTBFS: circular dependency

2014-02-23 Thread Keith Packard
peter green plugw...@p10link.net writes:

I've resolved this by including pre-built documentation and not
regenerating that at package build time. This fix requires a new
.orig.tar.gz file, and that needs help from ftp-masters to replace the
 existing file.

I've just confirmed with the FTP team that replacing the existing file
 is not an option.

This makes no sense to me; the current .orig.tar.gz file is not useful
for anything; the only version it could build cannot actually be built
because of the circular dependency. Moreover, the new .orig.tar.gz file
is what the upstream project released...

If you want to add the pre-built documentation you will need to either
change the upstream version (e.g. 2.11.0+doc or so) or place the
 documentation in the Debian tarball.

I'll see if I can't get the ftp masters to help out a bit and make this
work in some sensible fashion.

Bug#739743: FTBFS: circular dependency

2014-02-23 Thread Rebecca N. Palmer
If only the documentation requires this dependency, a better solution
would be to put it in an arch:all package (fontconfig-config or a new
(beware queue delay) fontconfig-doc) and use build-depends-indep
(https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-relationships.html#s-sourcebinarydeps).

However, if you can't do that quickly, I'd go with the previous solution
as a temporary measure, as this bug makes ~all GUI packages
BD-Uninstallable on non-amd64.

Bug#708880: Manual pages have GFDL problem (no invariant)

Your package include gfdl with invariant section see gengetopt.info and:
doc/gengetopt.html
doc/gengetopt.texinfo

Actually the latter file contains both GPL and GFDL declarations.
 I asked upstream for clarification:
 https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/help-gengetopt/2013-01/msg0.html
 There was no reply, yay...

GPL and GFDL are not compatible, so it might be that the result is not
distributable. If this is the case, then maybe the wheezy-ignore tag should
not have been added.

OK time to ask relicense to gnu fundation directly maybe

Bug#739604: sysvinit: The new skeleton does not work on kFreeBSD

2014-02-23 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
[Roger Leigh]
An alternative solution here would be to have a tiny executable which
runs the shell, i.e. similar to openrc's runscript. It might be worth
 looking at the runscript sources.

Yes, but I like the fact that the solution do not need to be compiled,
and should work on any platform.

The alternative approach with sourcing seem to work fine.

Bug#737013: MATE packaging is currently work in progress

2014-02-23 Thread John Paul Adrian Glaubitz
On 02/23/2014 07:16 AM, Vagrant Cascadian wrote:
If jessie were released today, would this package really be useful?

No, it wouldn't, you're right. But MATE consists of more than just
one package. Granted, we should have probably uploaded to experimental
first, but we have opted for unstable now and have to live with that.

Blocking just one package with an RC bug isn't really helpful either,
we'd have to block all MATE-related packages if we really want to
be sure that nothing breaks, wouldn't we?

If it's not ready for release, it shouldn't land in testing... and an RC bug
would be an appropriate way to keep it out until it's actually ready...

True. But since we know Jessie isn't going to be frozen until November
5th [1], I don't see any reason to kick off any discussions about the
current usability of any packages in testing or unstable yet.

We're right in the middle of the development process of the upcoming
Debian Jessie release and things are expected to break. And bug reports
like these just distract the maintainers from doing their job. If you
want something stable, use Debian stable. I know that Debian testing
comes with a certain level of QA, but it's still not guaranteed to be
as stable as the real Debian stable.

The MATE packaging efforts have gained lots of momentum recently and
many others have joined the team to help us with great results. MATE
in Debian has made great progress due to these people investing lots
of their free time into it and I am very happy to have these guys!

So, instead of complaining in bug reports, I'd rather see people
joining and helping us to mitigate these issues as quickly as
possible.

Adrian

  *greatly* appreciated.

Your analysis doesn't make much sense to me. If libz.so.1 is on the
default search path (and it is, unless you've moved it), you don't
need ld.so.cache to exist to resolve it. For things on the search
path, the cache only speeds up the lookup, it doesn't facilitate it.

Ok. My knowledge about libc and library-loading isn't great.

If this weren't true, literally *nothing* would run, because most of
the world depends on finding libc.so.6 on path.

So, I'd recommend sorting out where your libz.so.1 has gone to, and
that should get you going again.

I've prepared a copy of the system for testing via chroot. chroot'ed to

Time to dust off that installation DVD or make a new one if you have access

I agree that this is an insidious bug for inexperienced users to diagnose
 because
the system becomes unusable and unbootable.

Indeed. We haven't thought that libc6-amd64 can be installed on an amd64
system (it doesn't bring anything as for gdb64), but the multiarch
specification doesn't provide a way to prevent such a package to be
installed.

We are therefore currently working on a solution that allow
libc6-amd64:i386 to be installed without breaking the system.

For already broken systems like yours, here is a procedure to fix it. On
a rescue system, change to the root directory of the system to be fixed.

- make sure ldconfig won't be run anymore:
ln -sf /bin/true lib/ldconfig
- point the symlink to the correct libc version:
ln -sf /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libdl-2.13.so lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2
note that the version 2.13 might have to be adjusted depending on the
libc currently installed on your system

Then reboot on the system and run the following commands:
- remove libc6-amd64:
apt-get remove libc6-amd64
- reinstall and/or upgrade at least libc6 and libc-bin:
apt-get --reinstall libc6 libc-bin

The system does not start again.

The problem likely happens because you have libc6-amd64:i386 installed
on your amd64 system, in addition to the system one libc6:amd64 one. This
doesn't bring anything to your system (except bugs like this), but the
multiarch specification doesn't provide a way to prevent such a package to
be installed.

In your case, the problem is that ldconfig changes the
/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 to point to the libc6-amd64:i386 version,
so the wrong libc is used on your system. When you upgrade, you start
to have a mix of both libc, hence the issue. We are currently working on
a solution that allow libc6-amd64:i386 to be installed without breaking
the system.

For already broken systems like yours, here is a procedure to fix it. On
a rescue system, change to the root directory of the system to be fixed.
- make sure ldconfig won't be run anymore:
ln -sf /bin/true lib/ldconfig
- point the symlink to the correct libc version:
ln -sf /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libdl-2.18.so lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2
note that the version 2.18 might have to be adjusted depending on the
libc currently installed on your system

Then reboot on the system and run the following commands:
- remove libc6-amd64:
apt-get remove libc6-amd64
- reinstall and/or upgrade at least libc6 and libc-bin:
apt-get --reinstall libc6 libc-bin

  Dear Maintainer,

tilt 2.0 broke compatibility in various ways.
This causes sinatra to FTBFS, and the same goes for other rdepends.

Unsure what upstream's plan is with regard to migration.

This also broke rails in a very nasty way.

I think we should probably revert this new upstream version, and
reapproach the new upstream version in a different way by first making
 sure reverse dependencies still work.

Youhei, can you please look at this?

Now I check current package and upstream repository. It's difficult for
me to introduce backward compatibility layer. So I agree revert. But I
don't know procedure. How do I revert? with epoch? or create new package
like ruby-tilt-1.4?

We have to check reverse dependencies before uploading new upstream
 versions!

I agree deeply. sorry again.

Best Wishes,
Youhei

Hi,

On my amd64 system I installed libc6-amd64:i386, to see how that
behaves.

libc6:amd64 has a:
Replaces: libc6-amd64

The file they have in common is the dynamic linker:
/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2

It's the only file they have in common, and they really need
to have that in common. But obviously we want to get rid of
libc6-amd64 so it makes sense for libc6:amd64 to replace it.

In both packages it's a symlink, but to a different file:
libc6:amd64 has: /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 - /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ld-2.13.so
libc6-amd64:i386 has: /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 - ld-2.13.so

Both point to a file in their own package.
There is no /lib64/ld-2.13.so in libc6:amd64, only in
libc6-amd64:i386.

When installing libc6-amd64:i386 I got:
Unpacking libc6-amd64 (from .../libc6-amd64_2.13-37_i386.deb) ...
Replaced by files in installed package libc6:amd64 ...
Setting up libc6-amd64 (2.13-37) ...

However trying to remove libc6-amd64:i386 again, I got:
Removing libc6-amd64 ...
dpkg (subprocess): unable to execute installed post-removal script
(/var/lib/dpkg/info/libc6-amd64.postrm): No such file or directory

The problem being that /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 was a dangling
symlink pointing to ld-2.13.so which was removed.

It looks to me like that Replace wasn't taking into account,
and the symlink was just overwritten.

I know that symlinks have always been special, and I wonder
if that's what causing the problems. I didn't expect the
symlink to be overwritten when there is a Replaces.

Package: eglibc
Version: 2.13-38
Severity: grave
Justification: leaves system unusable

[Sorry for not filing this bug with reportbug, but due to this bug that
doesn't work anymore. I am also unable to sign my mail at this moment,
due to this bug.]

For building an i386-only package I libc6-amd64 was installed on my
multiarch system. After removal of the package I got apt telling me:

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer
required:
  libc6-amd64:i386 libc6-dev:i386 linux-libc-dev:i386
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.

So, I followed up with
paul@wollumbin ~ $ sudo apt-get autoremove
Reading package lists... Done

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  libc6-amd64:i386 libc6-dev:i386 linux-libc-dev:i386

After this operation, 31.5 MB disk space will be freed.

Now, all my executables in /usr/bin and /bin are not usable:
paul@wollumbin ~ $ ll /usr/bin/
bash: /bin/ls: No such file or directory

I can still cd to /bin or /usr/bin, but the system complains that there
the files are not there. I hope I still can fix this... but at the
moment my possibilities are limited.

  sure reverse dependencies still work.

Youhei, can you please look at this?

Now I check current package and upstream repository. It's difficult for
me to introduce backward compatibility layer. So I agree revert. But I
don't know procedure. How do I revert? with epoch? or create new package
 like ruby-tilt-1.4?

I wouldn't like to *not* add yet another versioned package like this.
Assuming this revert is temporary until we figure out a way forward, the
best way is to make a new upload based on the previous version using a
version number like 2.0.0+really1.4.1-1.

I think it's easier for me to do it than to explain how, so I went ahead
and did it. Check the git repository! :-)

We have to check reverse dependencies before uploading new upstream
  versions!

 I agree deeply. sorry again.

One of the reasons I am working on debci/ci.debian.net is to have this
sort of thing tested automatically for us, so 1) this type of think will
not reach testing and 2) we could even upload to experimental and have
all reverse dependencies tested in the cases we know there might be
issues with reverse dependencies.

mmm this is something I don't understand,

with boinc-dev being a transitional package things need to be done the

 Running

does not respect dependency ordering. You need to use a local repository
and apt-get install for sane upgrade path tests.

Can you push the pending stuff (e.g. Replaces in addition to Breaks) to git?
So I can build the package from git and push it into my piuparts engine.

Hello,

upgrading libc to 2.18 broke boost, e.g. hugin now FTBFS:

 typedef atomicuintptr_t atomic_uintptr_t;
 ^
/usr/include/boost/atomic/atomic.hpp:202:43: error: invalid type in declaration

 typedef atomicuintptr_t atomic_uintptr_t;

This was fixed upstream by
https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/changeset/84950
(already included in 1.55).
Applying this patch to /usr/include/boost/cstdint.hpp let me make
hugin build successfully again.

Correct, sudo is to perform a command as another user (by default

Only those few commands (in different scripts) need to be performed as

As I tried to express this is *not* the correct conclusion in my

Yes, I understand what you are saying.

You should use su in your scripts.

OK, but why?
What I'm missing so far is an explanation on why we shouldn't use sudo for
this use-case.

 May be you are trying
to grep /var/lib/dpkg/info for the usage of su / sudo to get some
 picture what others are doing.

Following the Unix philosophy of using a collection of specialized small
tools that do one thing best, when performing an action as another user it
seems to be the correct thing to use a tool that execute a command as
another user rather than one whose primary goal is change user ID or
become superuser

I would be in complete agreement to not use that tool if it was either new
or obscure, but I don't think this can be said of sudo.

Should I ask the -devel mailing list to help us get out of our confusion?

Have a great start of your week.

[ Re-sent to BTS by request of the security team, also updated ]

a bug in the handling of indirect magic rules of libmagic leads to
an infinite recursion when trying to determine the file type of
certain files. The has been assigned CVE-2014-1943. Additionally,
other well-crafted files might result in long computation times (five
seconds for a single file while using 100% CPU) and overlong results
(~400k line), something some applications that operate on the file
result might not handle in a sane way.

The issue has been made public by Bernd Melchers who initially found
this bug: http://mx.gw.com/pipermail/file/2014/001327.html

Impact is two-layered. The bug itself has been introduced years ago
(pre oldstable). From jessie on, the default magic file as shipped in
the package contains a file magic rule that is exploitable for a
segmentation fault.

In other words:

jessie: Always affected and in full scale.

squeeze/wheezy: Segmentation fault when using non-standard magic
files that use indirect in a certain way. Still vulnerable for the
computation time and overlong issues mentioned above.

Upstream released 5.17 last night, fixing the bug for all
reproducers I have in my collection. Backporting the patch is not
trivial but hopefully feasible. I'll give that a try later the day.

During the Debian packaging of RT 4.0.19 I discovered some unrelated
breakage. The behaviour of GnuPG 1.4.16 has changed with respect to
trustdb creation. From the changelog:

Noteworthy changes in version 1.4.16 (2013-12-18)
-

...

 * Do not create a trustdb file if --trust-model=always is used.

This appears to break the RT tests, which use this parameter:

Bug#739697: src:dolfin: FTBFS on armhf and mips: virtual memory exhausted: Cannot allocate memory

2014-02-23 Thread peter green

peter green wrote:
I've been doing some tests on this interestingly it failed for me much
earlier than on the buildd, maybe different systems give slightly
different ammounts of usable address space or something. Anyway
reducing optimisation levels etc doesn't seem to help, switching to
4.7 is looking more promising.

4.7 also ran into memory exhaustion problems (though later in the build
than 4.8 did), 4.6 was able to build it successfully on armhf. Still
need to test it on mips.

I also ran into an issue with boost which I had to add a workarround for.

Package: fontconfig-config
Version: 2.11.0-3
Severity: serious
User: debian...@lists.debian.org

Hi,

during a test with piuparts I noticed your package failed to purge.

From the attached log (scroll to the bottom...):

  Removing fontconfig-config (2.11.0-3) ...
  Purging configuration files for fontconfig-config (2.11.0-3) ...
rmdir: failed to remove '/etc/fonts/conf.d': No such file or directory
dpkg: error processing package fontconfig-config (--purge):
subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 1
  Errors were encountered while processing:
   fontconfig-config

Since /etc/fonts/conf.d is shipped by the package (and some others as
well) it should not be managed by maintainer scripts, but by dpkg only.
So remove the rmdir call.
There is currently a bug in dpkg that causes some directories to be left
behind (#316521) - this is going to be fixed in dpkg, no need to work
around this in packages. For piuparts this will be worked around by
adding such directories to an internal ignore list until dpkg gets fixed.

cheers,

Andreas

Sunpinyin upstream says sunpinyin-data (20130220) breaks current
 libsunpinyin.
 https://github.com/sunpinyin/sunpinyin/issues/42#issuecomment-35795012

How it breaks is shown above.

As I tested rebuilding sunpinyin-data with updated dict.utf8 and
lm_sc.t3g.arpa from open-gram upstream would resolve this.

Bug#739743: FTBFS: circular dependency

2014-02-23 Thread Keith Packard
Rebecca N. Palmer r.pal...@bham.ac.uk writes:

Sorry...it looks like this is being fixed by forcing builds against
 2.11.0-2 (https://buildd.debian.org/status/package.php?p=fontconfig), so
fixing this bug is no longer so urgent.

I've uploaded 2.11.0-5 which just provides the pre-built documentation
as a debian patch for now.

I think I'll probably eliminate the fontconfig-config package and just
merge the contents of that into the libfontconfig1 package; the benefit
of the separate fontconfig-config in disk space savings isn't great
enough to justify needing a separate package, I think.

While trying to build a new version of nbdkit, I fonud that a freshly

To me, this looks like a missing newline at the end of AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE

the problem for me.
