An optimal solution would consist in only one of the packages installing that file, and renaming or removing the file in the other package. Depending on the circumstances you might also consider Replace relations or file diversions. If the conflicting situation cannot be resolved then, as a last resort, the two packages have to declare a mutual Conflict. Please take into account that Replaces, Conflicts and diversions should only be used when packages provide different implementations for the same functionality. Here is a list of files that are known to be shared by both packages (according to the Contents file for sid/amd64, which may be slightly out of sync): /usr/include/FlexLexer.h This bug has been filed against both packages. If you, the maintainers of the two packages in question, have agreed on which of the packages will resolve the problem please reassign the bug to that package. You may then also register in the BTS that the other package is affected by the bug. -Ralf. Bug#744814: Changed plugin path breaks NM integration

I've updated network-manager-pptp in the mean time. You should probably poke the pppdcapiplugin/isdnutils maintainer. I'm not sure if filing a bug will be sufficient, since the package looks pretty much unmaintained, so you might have to NMU isdnutils. Unfortunately, since network-manager only has a recommends on ppp, it can't ensure such a strict versioned dependency. Please consider adding a Breaks: network-manager ( 0.9.8.8-7). I'll update NM accordingly. I've uploaded an updated network-manager 0.9.8.8-7 to DELAYED/4 as I want to let -6 migrate to testing first. Thanks for the report. I should have been more aware that bumping the version would cause this breakage. I'm marking this bug as serious to prevent migration of ppp to testing for the time being. I will of course add a Breaks to my next upload as you suggest. This will likely be later today. This is expected. If you don't have a consumer on /dev/xconsole (which I assume you don't have), the pipe will run full eventually and rsyslog will suspend trying to write to the pipe. It does retry after a while though. What was fixed was the incorrect way to detect failures when writing to the pipe. So rsyslog continuously retried without actually suspending properly. Bug#742113: rsyslog: still seeing some odd action 17 suspend/resume messages
On Tue, 15 Apr 2014, Michael Biebl wrote: Actually, yes. This is expected. If you don't have a consumer on /dev/xconsole (which I assume you don't have), the pipe will run full eventually and rsyslog will suspend trying to write to the pipe. It does retry after a while though. Alright. Got it. What was fixed was the incorrect way to detect failures when writing to the pipe. So rsyslog continuously retried without actually suspending properly. I see. If you want to suppress those log messages completely, you can set action.reportSuspension [0] to off. Either globally or per output. Does that sufficiently answer your question? Yes. Thanks. This kind of overwriting another package's files cannot be detected by dpkg. This was observed on the following upgrade paths: wheezy - jessie For /usr/share/doc/PACKAGE this may not be problematic as long as both packages are installed, ship byte-for-byte identical files and are upgraded in lockstep. But once one of the involved packages gets removed, the other one will lose its documentation files, too, including the copyright file, which is a violation of Policy 12.5: http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-docs.html#s-copyrightfile For other overwritten locations anything interesting may happen. Note that dpkg intentionally does not replace directories with symlinks and vice versa, you need the maintainer scripts to do this. See in particular the end of point 4 in http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-maintainerscripts.html#s-unpackphase It is recommended to use the dpkg-maintscript-helper commands 'dir_to_symlink' and 'symlink_to_dir' (available since dpkg 1.17.2) to perform the conversion, ideally using d/$PACKAGE.mainstscript. See dpkg-maintscript-helper(1) and dh_installdeb(1) for details. From the attached log (usually somewhere in the middle...): 0m54.5s ERROR: FAIL: silently overwrites files via directory symlinks: /usr/share/doc/llvm-dev/changelog.Debian.gz (llvm-dev) != /usr/share/doc/llvm-runtime/changelog.Debian.gz (llvm-runtime) /usr/share/doc/llvm-dev/copyright (llvm-dev) != /usr/share/doc/llvm-runtime/copyright (llvm-runtime) cheers, Andreas llvm-dev_1:3.3-21.log.gz Description: GNU Zip compressed data ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: llvm-defaults Source-Version: 0.21+nmu1 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of llvm-defaults, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive. Bug#742016: user-mode-linux: build-depends on linux-source-3.12 which is no longer in the archive
Control: tags -1 + patch * Mattia Dongili malat...@linux.it, 2014-04-15, 07:19: Updating the user-mode-linux package is just a matter of setting the correct version in debian/{rules,control}, updating the kernel configuration (there are debian/rules targets to help with that - oldconfig{32,64} - policy is M for everything) and building the package. If there are no major issues, this is it. I've attached what I have so far. I answered no for a couple of Y/N questions; hope this is okay. I also had to disable CONFIG_PHY_EXYNOS_MIPI_VIDEO, because otherwise the build fails with: MODPOST 744 modules ERROR: devm_ioremap_resource [drivers/phy/phy-exynos-mipi-video.ko] undefined! Bug#744877: passwd: master fails to build
Package: passwd Version: 1:4.2-1 Severity: grave Hi, Recently, subuid/subgid support was added to passwd through a serie of patches. In commit, 68fb7a, those patches were later merged to form the userns patch present in HEAD. However, the package cannot be built due to an incorrect patch to src/useradd.c -- an #endif is removed. Attached is a patch to correct the patch :) Also, on my quest to acquire the updated package, I noticed a couple of issues with the project's FusionForge page: - SCM points to an empty repository (pkg-shadow.git, cloneable); - The actual repo is shadow.git (not mentionned, not cloneable); I had to download a tarball of master to play with the package. Bug#744751: perl -i ignores errors (!)
On Mon, Apr 14, 2014 at 12:02:51PM +0100, Ian Jackson wrote: Package: perl Version: 5.14.2-21+deb7u1 Severity: grave mariner:~/junk perl -i.bak -pe '' nonexistent Can't open nonexistent: No such file or directory. mariner:~/junk echo $? 0 mariner:~/junk I appreciate that fixing this is likely to break things which were relying on the fault-oblivious[1] approach but overall I think it's necessary. It's not -i that's ignoring errors here, it's -p. The behaviour triggered by -i isn't reached at all in your example. A few reduced versions that behave the same way would be perl -pe 1 nonexistent perl -ne 1 nonexistent perl -e '' nonexistent The first two cases are documented in perlrun(1) for -p and -n: If a file named by an argument cannot be opened for some reason, Perl warns you about it, and moves on to the next file. Here's a case where perl -i is really 'ignoring' errors: % perl -pi.bak -e1 /etc/passwd Can't rename /etc/passwd to /etc/passwd.bak: Permission denied, skipping file. % echo $? 0 or, omitting the -p option as above, % perl -i.bak -e '' /etc/passwd Can't rename /etc/passwd to /etc/passwd.bak: Permission denied, skipping file at -e line 1. % echo $ 0 The relevant passage in perlrun(1) for -i: If, for a given file, Perl is unable to create the backup file as specified in the extension then it will skip that file and continue on with the next one (if it exists). I note that these documentation parts don't cover the exit code, although the 'warns you' wording for -p and -n IMO implies no change to the exit code. I can see that it would be useful if an exit code would be propagated on errors, somewhat like for instance find(1) does. I suppose it should replace the implicit exit(0) at the end of the program so that explicit exit() or die() calls and the like in the program would take precedence. This seems like it might be a feasible change for the future, but it needs to be discussed and implemented upstream. Backward compatibility is a high priority for perl, so it might well get rejected too. Anyway, I think this is an enhancement request of the 'wishlist' category, not a grave bug. It all seems to be working as designed. This usually means an old version of the package shipped a symlink but that was later replaced by a real (and non-empty) directory. From the attached log (usually somewhere in the middle...): 2m46.2s ERROR: FAIL: silently overwrites files via directory symlinks: /usr/share/doc/libnetfilter-queue-dev/changelog.Debian.gz (libnetfilter-queue-dev) != /usr/share/doc/libnetfilter-queue1/changelog.Debian.gz (libnetfilter-queue1) /usr/share/doc/libnetfilter-queue-dev/copyright (libnetfilter-queue-dev) != /usr/share/doc/libnetfilter-queue1/copyright (libnetfilter-queue1) 2m34.5s ERROR: FAIL: silently overwrites files via directory symlinks: /usr/share/doc/libnetfilter-queue1-dbg/changelog.Debian.gz (libnetfilter-queue1-dbg) != /usr/share/doc/libnetfilter-queue1/changelog.Debian.gz (libnetfilter-queue1) /usr/share/doc/libnetfilter-queue1-dbg/copyright (libnetfilter-queue1-dbg) != /usr/share/doc/libnetfilter-queue1/copyright (libnetfilter-queue1) cheers, Andreas libnetfilter-queue-dev_1.0.2-1.log.gz Description: GNU Zip compressed data ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: libnetfilter-queue Source-Version: 1.0.2-2 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of libnetfilter-queue, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive. This happens when in earlier versions (2.x, 3.x), you had not mentioned any guid for xml directories records. Then calendarserver used to auto-generate the guid. But starting with version 5.x, calendarserver stopped auto-generating guid and the guid has to be manually entered in accounts.xml file. So, if you enter a guid, which is different than the earlier auto-generated guid, then calendarserver won't be able to map to the migrated user data. A fix for this will be rolled out pretty soon. --- System information. --- Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux 3.13-1-686-pae Debian Release: jessie/sid 500 unstable ftp.debian.org 500 testing www.deb-multimedia.org 500 squeeze-cdh3 archive.cloudera.com 500 precise ppa.launchpad.net 500 all liveusb.info 1000 testing security.debian.org 1000 testing ftp.debian.org --- Package information. --- Depends (Version) | Installed =-+- libc6 (= 2.4) | 2.18-4 python (= 2.7) | 2.7.5-5 python ( 2.8) | 2.7.5-5 memcached | 1.4.13-0.3 python-zope.interface (= 3.6.0) | 4.0.5-1+b2 python-openssl (= 0.9) | 0.13.1-2 python-kerberos | 1.1+svn10616-2 python-xattr (= 0.5) | 0.6.4-2 python-pygresql (= 4.0) | python-twisted-core (= 12.2) | 13.2.0-1 python-twisted-conch (= 12.2) | python-twisted-mail (= 12.2) | 13.2.0-1 python-twisted-web (= 12.2) | 13.2.0-1 python-twisted-words (= 12.2) | 13.2.0-1 python-dateutil | python-psutil (= 0.6.0) | python-ldap (= 2.3.13) | python-pycalendar | 2.0~svn11458-1 python-sqlparse (= 0.1.2) | 0.1.10-1 python-crypto (= 2.5) | 2.6.1-4 python-setproctitle (= 1.0) | ssl-cert | 1.0.33 adduser | 3.113+nmu3 lsb-base | 4.1+Debian12 Recommends (Version) | Installed =-+-=== python-pam | 0.4.2-13.1 Suggests (Version) | Installed ==-+-=== pyflakes (= 0.6.1) | python-tz | 2012c-1 python-pyasn1 (= 0.1.2) | 0.1.7-1 python-pydoctor | -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. A bit of Googling seems to indicate that this is due to building against Tcl 8.6: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=902561 As a short-term thing, you can probably get it working by either adding - -DUSE_INTERP_RESULT to the CPPFLAGS at build time, or patching some appropriate internal header to include the same define - or possibly by explicitly build-depending on tcl8.5-dev, though I don't know enough about Tcl or its packaging to speak to that approach. In the long term, as the link indicates, the correct fix would involve modifying the source to avoid using internal fields from Tcl_Interp. However, that seems like the sort of thing that would be best done by upstream. - -- The Wanderer Secrecy is the beginning of tyranny. This usually means an old version of the package shipped a symlink but that was later replaced by a real (and non-empty) directory. This kind of overwriting another package's files cannot be detected by dpkg. This was observed on the following upgrade paths: wheezy - sid For /usr/share/doc/PACKAGE this may not be problematic as long as both packages are installed, ship byte-for-byte identical files and are upgraded in lockstep. This is forbidden by the policy, see http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-files.html#s-config-files 10.7.3: [...] The easy way to achieve this behavior is to make the configuration file a conffile. [...] This implies that the default version will be part of the package distribution, and must not be modified by the maintainer scripts during installation (or at any other time). Note that once a package ships a modified version of that conffile, dpkg will prompt the user for an action how to handle the upgrade of this modified conffile (that was not modified by the user). Further in 10.7.3: [...] must not ask unnecessary questions (particularly during upgrades) [...] If a configuration file is customized by a maintainer script after having asked some debconf questions, it may not be marked as a conffile. Instead a template could be installed in /usr/share and used by the postinst script to fill in the custom values and create (or update) the configuration file (preserving any user modifications!). This file must be removed during postrm purge. ucf(1) may help with these tasks. Bug#738428: GenBind.evalConstCExpr: Casts are not implemented yet
The version of libncursesw5-dev packaged in Debian Unstable includes this macro: #define NCURSES_BITS(mask,shift) (NCURSES_CAST(chtype,(mask)) ((shift) + NCURSES_ATTR_SHIFT)) which differs from the version on my build machine: #define NCURSES_BITS(mask,shift) ((mask) ((shift) + NCURSES_ATTR_SHIFT)) The new NCURSES_CAST() is breaking c2hs, which added support for integer casts in version 0.16.6 (unstable has 0.16.5). My recommendation is to upgrade the c2hs package version to at least 0.16.6. I've verified that cabal install c2hs==0.16.6 lets ncurses build on unstable.
