Bug#989508: xscreensaver: Disconnecting a video output can cause XScreenSaver to crash and unlock

Though on checking the code it was not immediately clear (to me) what makes earlier version not affected. Thus the general rule for us is, to err on the wrong side and have something marked as affected which is not, rather the other way around. SuSE seem to have similar issue, cf. https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1186918#c1 Do you have any more insights here? Regards, Salvatore

Bug#989852: xorg-server-source: Cannot build X from provided source tarball
Package: src:xorg-server Version: 2:1.20.4-1+deb10u3 Severity: serious Control: tags -1 patch Hi, the source tarball of xorg-server shipped via bin:pkg xorg-server-source in Debian buster is in some broken state. The reason for this is that quilt patches don't get applied before the tarball gets created during package build. Additionally, the xorg-server src:pkg is in some weird patch management state (which probably is not fixable for buster): it applies some changes to the upstream code via a .diff.gz file (source format 1.0) and other patches via quilt. Even more broken the source tarball becomes because of some changes being applied to xkb/xkb.c via the diff.gz file, some others via debian/patches/09_Correct-bounds-checking-in-XkbSetNames.patch. So, at the moment my 3rd party project depending on the availability of the xorg-server-source package is not buildable. As a work around, I provided a fixed 2:1.20.4-1+deb10u3.1 version in a 3rd party repo outside of Debian. See the attached .debdiff that fixes the FTBFS issue, but that also excludes the tarball from itself (#930405) and also applies some reproducibility fixes. Please get this change into buster. If help is required, I am happy to do the upload. Thanks. The attached fix probably also needs forward porting for the quilt push/pop -a part. In my changelog (in the .debdiff), I don't close #930405, so that should be added when uploading. Thanks! Bug#989843: thunderbird: Problem loading page: NS_ERROR_NET_INADEQUATE_SECURITY
Package: thunderbird Version: 1:78.11.0-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Dear Maintainer, Since the update to 78.11.0 Thunderbird cannot load various webpages. To reproduce the error, try to do a search in the Add-ons Manager (type something in the search box and press Enter). The error message is "The website tried to negotiate an inadequate level of security. ... Error code: NS_ERROR_NET_INADEQUATE_SECURITY" There is perhaps a more useful error message in the error console: addons.thunderbird.net : server does not support RFC 5746, see CVE-2009-3555 The problem also appears when trying to load other pages or using certain add-ons (for example, calendar-google-provider). The problem goes away if one sets network.http.spdy.enforce-tls-profile to false in the preferences. This makes me think that there is an issue with the TLS library. Its package.json depends on proper-lockfile ^2.0.0, which had the calling convention lockfile.lock( file, options, callback ) In proper-lockfile 3.0.0 they removed that calling convention in favor of use of promises (much like what happened with mkdirp in bug #972952). There were some new symbols ... but they appeared independently of my changes (I built in bullseye, not sid, in case it does matter). Tests have not shown any problems. And in combination with patched gdal and friends we have achieved co-installability ;-) This is good news. Thanks for this work. Thanks Andreas! Once that tests are done and the packages was uploaded, please let me know so that I can add the appropriate hints on the release team side. FWIW, the symbol is a template instantiation of a function from the standard library and should be marked as optional. Attached is a new version of the patch. Some wording was tweaked and 'optional' added. The new packages are still available as cruft in sid, so we should be able to avoid NEW. Gilles, do you want to do the upload or shall I NMU it? I'll try to upload this evening. I'll now reupload libaec with the recently added Breaks dropped, since they are no longer needed ;-) Thanks again! _g.

It installed fine in 'buster', then the upgrade to 'bullseye' fails. The upgrade involves switching from the real package node-acorn to the (versioned) virtual package node-acorn, something that is usually difficult for apt and in this case apt fails to find a working upgrade path. Introducing a (real) transitional package node-acorn makes the whole process smooth. >From the attached log (scroll to the bottom...): Starting 2 pkgProblemResolver with broken count: 2 Investigating (0) libnode72:amd64 < none -> 12.21.0~dfsg-1 @un uN Ib > Broken libnode72:amd64 Breaks on libnode64:amd64 < 10.24.0~dfsg-1~deb10u1 @ii mK > Considering libnode64:amd64 -3 as a solution to libnode72:amd64 27 Added libnode64:amd64 to the remove list Fixing libnode72:amd64 via remove of libnode64:amd64 Investigating (0) node-debbundle-acorn:amd64 < none -> 8.0.5+ds+~cs19.19.27-1 @un uN Ib > Broken node-debbundle-acorn:amd64 Breaks on node-acorn:amd64 < 5.5.3+ds3-3 @ii mK > (< 6.0.2+20181021git007b08d01eff070+ds+~0.3.1+~4.0.0+~0.3.0+~5.0.0+ds+~1.6.1+ds-2~) Considering node-acorn:amd64 0 as a solution to node-debbundle-acorn:amd64 -1 Holding Back node-debbundle-acorn:amd64 rather than change node-acorn:amd64 Investigating (1) node-buble:amd64 < 0.19.4-3 -> 0.20.0+~0.19.2-3 @ii umU Ib > Broken node-buble:amd64 Depends on node-acorn:amd64 < 5.5.3+ds3-3 @ii mK > (>= 6.0~) Considering node-debbundle-acorn:amd64 -1 as a solution to node-buble:amd64 0 Holding Back node-buble:amd64 rather than change node-acorn:amd64 Investigating (2) node-magic-string:amd64 < 0.25.2-1 -> 0.25.7-4 @ii umU Ib > Broken node-magic-string:amd64 Breaks on node-buble:amd64 < 0.19.4-3 | 0.20.0+~0.19.2-3 @ii umH > (< 0.19.8-7~) Considering node-buble:amd64 0 as a solution to node-magic-string:amd64 1 Upgrading node-buble:amd64 due to Breaks field in node-magic-string:amd64 Investigating (2) node-buble:amd64 < 0.19.4-3 -> 0.20.0+~0.19.2-3 @ii umU Ib > Broken node-buble:amd64 Depends on node-acorn:amd64 < 5.5.3+ds3-3 @ii mK > (>= 6.0~) Considering node-debbundle-acorn:amd64 -1 as a solution to node-buble:amd64 0 Holding Back node-buble:amd64 rather than change node-acorn:amd64 Investigating (3) node-magic-string:amd64 < 0.25.2-1 -> 0.25.7-4 @ii umU Ib > Broken node-magic-string:amd64 Breaks on node-buble:amd64 < 0.19.4-3 | 0.20.0+~0.19.2-3 @ii umH > (< 0.19.8-7~) Considering node-buble:amd64 0 as a solution to node-magic-string:amd64 1 Upgrading node-buble:amd64 due to Breaks field in node-magic-string:amd64 Investigating (3) node-buble:amd64 < 0.19.4-3 -> 0.20.0+~0.19.2-3 @ii umU Ib > Broken node-buble:amd64 Depends on node-acorn:amd64 < 5.5.3+ds3-3 @ii mK > (>= 6.0~) Considering node-debbundle-acorn:amd64 -1 as a solution to node-buble:amd64 0 Holding Back node-buble:amd64 rather than change node-acorn:amd64 Investigating (4) node-magic-string:amd64 < 0.25.2-1 -> 0.25.7-4 @ii umU Ib > Broken node-magic-string:amd64 Breaks on node-buble:amd64 < 0.19.4-3 | 0.20.0+~0.19.2-3 @ii umH > (< 0.19.8-7~) Considering node-buble:amd64 0 as a solution to node-magic-string:amd64 1 Upgrading node-buble:amd64 due to Breaks field in node-magic-string:amd64 Investigating (4) node-buble:amd64 < 0.19.4-3 -> 0.20.0+~0.19.2-3 @ii umU Ib > Broken node-buble:amd64 Depends on node-acorn:amd64 < 5.5.3+ds3-3 @ii mK > (>= 6.0~) Considering node-debbundle-acorn:amd64 -1 as a solution to node-buble:amd64 0 Holding Back node-buble:amd64 rather than change node-acorn:amd64 Investigating (5) node-magic-string:amd64 < 0.25.2-1 -> 0.25.7-4 @ii umU Ib > Broken node-magic-string:amd64 Breaks on node-buble:amd64 < 0.19.4-3 | 0.20.0+~0.19.2-3 @ii umH > (< 0.19.8-7~) Considering node-buble:amd64 0 as a solution to node-magic-string:amd64 1 Upgrading node-buble:amd64 due to Breaks field in

The sid version on 4.9.3-4 doesn't have those > conflicting files. That is on purpose. manpages-l10n has various flavours, one is tracking unstable, another one is tracking Buster (currently). Additionally, when translations are moving upstream, they get (manually, if needed be) removed from the version for unstable. So two cases may occur: 1. The translation status is different for unstable and buster. Then the localized man page may appear only in either unstable or buster. 2. Due to the moving of translations to upstream package, the translation may be contained in buster (where upstream did not contain the translation) and not in unstable (where upstream contains the translation and so its no longer present in manpages-l10n). I can see that this is annoying, but I don't think it's release-critical. Many users of gnome-control-center use it sucessfully without ever having carried out colour calibration. normal severity, or maybe important, seems more proportionate. There is already an upstream issue report at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/issues/1194 saying that the check for argyll should happen before the slow process of colour testing. If you want to contribute an implementation of that, I'm sure the upstream developers would appreciate the help. > > Installing the argyll package solves the issue. > > It seems that we can pull it via Recommends is enough as below. Recommends is for "packages that would be found together with this one in all but unusual installations". Does that really apply here, or would a Suggests be more appropriate? argyll has an installed size of around 100M, which is a significant fraction of the size of the GNOME desktop environment, so I don't think we necessarily want to be pulling it in by default. > But its git repo is a bit confusing, should I patch it to 3.38.4-1 > in unstable or more updated version 3.38.6-1 in repo? If you are making changes targeted at GNOME 40 (currently in experimental due to the freeze, but will go to unstable after Debian 11 is released) then the debian/master branch is correct. If this is release-critical for Debian 11 (which I don't think it is, but perhaps other GNOME team members disagree), then the debian/unstable branch (which I've just updated) is the correct starting point for preparing an update for testing/unstable. Thanks, smcv

The sid version on 4.9.3-4 doesn't have those > conflicting files. This actually makes sense, because the backports version is targetted for buster with psmisc/procps package versions which don't/still have them. So the exclude/include list the buster-backports package is more similar to the buster package than the bullseye package — just the contents of the manpages is as up to date as the bullseye package. >From that point of view, this is _not_ a bug in the manpages-de package in buster-backports. (But it still might be the best option to fix it in there.) Then again, dist-upgrades from buster with to bullseye should work smoothly like without backports and it seems to be that the main burden to make this sure lays in the backports-packages. I though still think that this is a serious (sic!) issue and it should be fixed. Here's my analysis of the potential solutions I see: 1) If that Breaks/Replaces headers in psmisc (and probably procps) would be bumped to "<< 4.9.3-4" it would also match the manpages-de backports package, but then again, this would also match other non-backports manpages-de package versions inbetween which don't have these files. And I fear this would have any unwanted (and potentially also RC-level) side effects. :-/ 2) So I wonder if the buster-backports package of manpages-de could conflict with the psmisc and procps package in bullseye(*)? This should probably take care that it is upgraded before procps and psmisc are upgraded and hopefully solves the issue without too many side-effects. (I'm not sure if Breaks/Replaces with ">>" or ">=" really work as expected. I've never seen that in use anywhere before. Taking Guillem into Cc so maybe he can tell something about if Conflicts or Breaks/Replaces are the better choice here.) I only see these hopefully only minor disadvantages of that latter solution: * Users need to have uptodate buster-backports package, i.e. 4.9.3-4~bpo10+2. If they don't upgrade to 4.9.3-4~bpo10+2 before dist-upgrading and then upgrade with 4.9.3-4~bpo10+1 still being installed, they will run into this issue again. Might be something for the Release Notes. * I'm not sure if apt gets confused while trying to find a good order for dist-upgrading if the Conflicts/Breaks/Replaces is in the old package and not the to-be-upgraded-to one. I hopefully think that this is no issue, but I'm Cc'ing the APT team for input on that to be on the safe side. 3) Only ship manpages in manpages-de in buster-backports which are in psmisc/procps neither in buster nor in bullseye. I assume this is the solution, Craig had in mind when reassigning the bug report. IMHO this is also a viable solution if variant 2) has too many side effects as it IMHO only has a minor impact on the usability of the manpages-de package in buster-backports. Footnotes: (*) buster-backports neither seems to have psmisc nor procps which surely makes this issue less complicated than it could be. :-) Regards, Axel -- ,''`. | Axel Beckert , https://people.debian.org/~abe/ : :' : | Debian Developer, ftp.ch.debian.org Admin `. `' | 4096R: 2517 B724 C5F6 CA99 5329 6E61 2FF9 CD59 6126 16B5 `-| 1024D: F067 EA27 26B9 C3FC 1486 202E C09E 1D89 9593 0EDE

My other concern > is that I don't want to force dependent packages to declare 20 dependencies. If you leave the -dev package as a single monolithic binary package, then maintainers of dependent packages shouldn't need to change anything: they still declare Build-Depends: libogre-1.12-dev, and then their ${shlibs:Depends} expands to something like "libogremain1.12.12 (>= x), libogreoverlay1.12.12 (>= y)" depending which ones they are linked to. For example, Pango now works like this: we still only have one -dev package to Build-Depend on, libpango1.0-dev. Depending on which parts you actually use, you might get runtime dependencies on libpango-1.0-0, libpangocairo-1.0-0, libpangoft2-1.0-0 and/or libpangoxft-1.0-0. Qt is another good example of this approach: qtbase5-dev is the -dev package for libqt5core5a, libqt5gui5 and various others. Having one -dev package per shared library is not required, although some maintainers prefer to do it anyway for consistency (for example libpolkit-agent-1-dev and libpolkit-gobject-1-dev are separate, but arguably they could equally well have been combined). The time it becomes important to split -dev packages is when they have relatively "heavy" dependencies, for example in the poppler source package, which has separate -dev packages for the core library, the generic C++ binding, the GLib binding and the Qt binding. If I'm packaging a multi-library package from scratch, and the upstream project is already neatly split up by shared library with separate header directories and pkg-config .pc modules (like Pango is, and like Ogre seems to be), then I would personally split the -dev package - but that's personal opinion and not a Policy requirement. If I'm updating an existing package, I won't usually split a monolithic -dev package unless there's a specific reason to need to do it, which is why I didn't split libpango1.0-dev. > Organizing the package contents to not waste > archive space is definitely a good thing to add to the list of things to > address next. This isn't actually about (not) wasting archive space, it's about whether two different SONAMEs of the same library can be installed in parallel (like the way you could install both libssl1.0.2 and libssl1.1 on Debian 9 systems, and in practice often had to do so during upgrades). Not wasting archive space by introducing an Architecture: all package for data is just a nice side-effect. smcv

Some wording was tweaked and 'optional' added. The new packages are still available as cruft in sid, so we should be able to avoid NEW. Gilles, do you want to do the upload or shall I NMU it? I'll now reupload libaec with the recently added Breaks dropped, since they are no longer needed ;-) Andreas diff -Nru hdf5-1.10.6+repack/debian/changelog hdf5-1.10.6+repack/debian/changelog --- hdf5-1.10.6+repack/debian/changelog 2020-04-24 20:00:42.0 +0200 +++ hdf5-1.10.6+repack/debian/changelog 2021-06-08 08:57:04.0 +0200 @@ -1,3 +1,17 @@ +hdf5 (1.10.6+repack-3) UNRELEASED; urgency=medium + + * Reintroduce libhdf5-103, libhdf5-cpp-103, libhdf5-openmpi-103, +libhdf5-mpich-103 as transitional packages depending on the individual +library packages that were bundled under these names in buster. Actually in that case, I have no idea how the Breaks/Replaces headers and the maintainer scripts need to look like.
