Bug#421219: Why in testing only

2007-05-04 Thread Grzegorz Szyszlo

This package is included both in testing stable release.
But this is not reported as stable, only reported as testing bug.
Why?

Bug#416210: linux-image-2.6.18-4-686: Hangs at initrd boot state [i386] dual PentiumIII chipset ServerWorks OSB4

2007-03-25 Thread Grzegorz Szyszlo
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-4-686
Version: 2.6.18.dfsg.1-11
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

System: fresh pure install, all tasks from tasksel. On install state
I hadn't any problems, but next boot cause any big problem for me:

Kernel 2.6.18-4-486 works ok, but it has only ONE processor support and
is slower.

Kernel 2.6.18-4-686 hangs at boot. I don't know how switch off SMP at
   boot for tests.
both install selections SMP nonSMP uses both installed processors.
I had this problem with -3- kernel version. Previous I don't remember,
because I had not much time for tests, and I reinstalled system many times
   to find stable system.
I didn't try remove one processor for test. I'll do it if it will be needed.

System hanging is very strange.
I can do ctrl+alt+del, I can scroll shift+pgup/pgdown. Maybe one
thread is hang, and don't allow second thread (second processor)
to continue boot process.
After about 45 minutes system boot, but hangs on another step.
Finally system start up, but is very unstable. A lot of processes
have zombie status. It is impossible to down system properly.
shutdown -h now didn't down the system for about 3 hours,
but started this process corectly - changed init state i succesfully
stopped some of daemons.
To install correctly fresh system, I must look out for selecting 486
kernel version, because 686 strange hang at initrd/boot state.

Bootloader is grub, booted as (hd0,1) or /dev/ida/c0d0p2,
because on p1 is configuration partition. Making boot sector on c0d0
cause config partition unusable. Really config partition is DOS partition,
accessed by BIOS. c0d0p2 has bootable flag. Booting cause no problems.
Kernel initrd file are loaded initialized correctly.

My needs:
1. I have two computers. Give me scheme for RS232 cable to save
all startup log, and command for kernel to switch output to RS232.
I can use minicom for getting messages.
2. I want temporarly switch off SMP on -686, try boot.
3. Maybe use 486 kernel version with SMP support

If it don't take any effect, please help me remove kernel module by
module, to find one that cause problem.

I think, it's possible 3 ways for resolving:
1. SMP cause problem
2. 686 cause problem
3. Problem is in any kernel module compiled as SMP or 680 or both.

Bug#406621: etch/install i386 hang after first reboot on Compaq ML370 with PIII proc

2007-01-12 Thread Grzegorz Szyszlo
Package: installation-reports
Severity: critical

Base System Installation Checklist:
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Initial boot worked:[O]
Configure network HW: [O]
Config network: [O]
Detect CD: [O]
Load installer modules: [E]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [O]
Create file systems:[O]
Mount partitions: [O]
Install base system:[O]
Install boot loader:[E]
Reboot: [E]

About Load installer modules, on floppy install is error when I select
PC keyboard. On CD install it's ok.

About install boot loader, select lilo generate error. Select grub works
ok.

About Reboot, only kernel is booting. It detect and load all needed
modules for network, hard disk controller (hardware array)
and IDE cdrom. Properly display maked partitions, and hang.
No shell is available. I can only alt+ctrl+del to repeat reboot.

About install. It's etch installer. I tryed floppy install and binary-1
bootable CD install.
Result is the same. I selected allways kernel i686 without SMP. Once I
selected i686-SMP, but result is the same.

Hardware config:

Server: Compaq ML370 without suffix G1,2,3 or 4

Memory: two modules 128MB/133MHz ECC. memtest86 does not report any
errors (tested for 4 days non-stop)

Processors: first PIII 966MHz/133MHz, second PIII 667MHz/133MHz (to
prevent problems, i decided to remove second processor)

Network: intel, supported by e100 kernel module. Works ok with DHCP and
Static sets, I can install floppy boot with net install.

Disc controller:
For CDROM, IDE ServerWorks with 2 channels paralell ata

For hard drives, Compaq Smart Array 3200 with 64MB RAM, useable for
cache 56MB RAM, connected 6 disks SCSI hot pluggable 9.1GB 10kRPM,
configured as one logical volume presented as physical device
/dev/ida/c0d0 by kernel module cpqarray .

I notice, bootable binary-1 debian/sarge works ok. network upgrade
from fresh sarge install to eth works ok. I'll try boot installer
with debug flag, and try lspci bot now I don't have this data.

Bug#390436: It's impossible to start all OpenOffice apps in Gnome

2006-10-01 Thread Grzegorz Szyszlo
Package: openoffice.org
Version: 2.0.3-6
Followup-For: Bug #390436

It's impossible to start all open office applications in Gnome
environment. Cause is, not installed package openoffice.org-gnome.
Gnome support is not installed, because is installation problem with
openoffice.org-gtk.
When I click any of openoffice application, this start is begin, and...
at short time application end without display any window or
alert/notice. end with nothing.

it works ok in KDE environment.

I tested it in fresh etch installation, started from first full
installation Debian Woody CD (because actual etch floppy
installer is failed, when access to hdd is done by cpqarray module, and
I have not cd writer at this time)
