Bug#394392: Alternative msync() fix for 2.6.18?
Hi Hugh and Peter, We in Debian have applied your "mm: msync() cleanup" patch (plus the other mm changes needed for this one) to our 2.6.18 kernel because it's needed for LSB 3.1 compliance. Given that apparently no fix for the induced filesystem corruption is coming forth and we're trying to get a release of Debian out, I was wondering if it would be possible to create an alternative msync() fix that doesn't really on those mm changes. Since 2.6.17 and 2.6.18 are currently not LSB 3.1 compliant, I think this might also be something for the -stable branch. Do you think this is possible and do you have any interest in creating such a patch? This would really help us a lot. -- Martin Michlmayr http://www.cyrius.com/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have not, however, built a 2.6.18 kernel with > this patch and tested it, though it's the only patch in the Fedora > kernel which touches the msync() code. So it seems that the patches needed for msync() conformance we applied from 2.6.19 to our 2.6.18 cause filesystem corruption, see the current discussion on this on lkml. From what I understand it, plain 2.6.18 is not LSB 3.1 conform and you need some fixes which are associated with filesystem corruption. While Andrew, Linus and co are currently trying to come up with a patch, I think it might be better for us to simply back out these patches. What doe it take to get an exception for this LSB test? Surely the reasons cited above (fails with 2.6.18, a fairly current kernel and the patches to fix it are associated with fs corruption) are pretty good arguments for an exception... -- Martin Michlmayr http://www.cyrius.com/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#393831: FTBFS on ia64: fails with ld assertion failure
Package: ghdl Version: 0.25+gcc4.1.1-1 Severity: serious ghdl no longer builds on IA64. The assertion failure in ld should be fixed (and I reported a bug upstream already), but apparently this is still a bug in the package. http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3351#c11 might give some clue as to where to start looking. It might be worth trying to compile the package with gcc-4.1_4.1.1-7 (the compiler used for the last successful upload), but otherwise it must be a change between ghdl 0.24 and 0.25. > Automatic build of ghdl_0.25+gcc4.1.1-1 on coconut0 by sbuild/ia64 0.49 ... > gnatlink > /build/tbm/ghdl-0.25+gcc4.1.1/gcc-4.1.1/build/gcc/vhdl/ortho_gcc-main.ali -o > ghdl1 ortho-lang.o gcc-version.o ../gcc/toplev.o ../gcc/libbackend.a > ../libcpp/libcpp.a ../libiberty/libiberty.a ../libcpp/libcpp.a > ../libiberty/libiberty.a > /usr/bin/ld: BFD 2.17 Debian GNU/Linux assertion fail ../../bfd/elflink.c:6261 > /usr/bin/ld: BFD 2.17 Debian GNU/Linux internal error, aborting at > ../../bfd/elflink.c line 6349 in elf_link_check_versioned_symbol > > /usr/bin/ld: Please report this bug. -- Martin Michlmayr http://www.cyrius.com/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I didn't realize how many packages exhibited this problem until I filed a bunch of bugs. Maybe this is a linux-kernel-headers issue after all. Can someone please investigate. Hmm, yeah, it compiles fine on amd64 so I assume it's a header problem on i386. Bug#392170: ia64
Sometimes you see a segfault also on other arches, e.g. aleph, proxy-suite and sdcc fail on amd64 and ia64 but not on i386. snort and transfig also fail on ia64 and amd, not sure about i386. Yeah, they are the same. Maybe a 64 bit issue? -- Martin Michlmayr http://www.cyrius.com/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble?
