I enabled notifications again and some extensions and everything looks fine by now. No crash till now. But as we know: this version now is as "buggy" (bug overlay...) as 1.50.2-2 so are there any efforts to debug the problem further (e. g. via #887082 or #881301) - then I would try to help in the next days. Bug#888199: gnome-shell crashes at different circumstances (not usable anymore)
Package: gnome-shell Version: 3.26.2-4 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Dear Maintainer, (it began with 3.26.2-3 with today's apt-upgrade before 3.26.2-4 but intel-microcode?? it crashes way more often) For me actual gnome shell crashes - seconds after establishing my network connection (which does not establish by itself anymore - bug with network-manager - time for another bug report) - after resuming suspend - and after one of the last circumstances it crashes directly after login Nevertheless if on Wayland or X. Because of these crashes gnome-shell gets unusable. Because of this I may have problems to send you useful mails (journalctl attachment available, I hope I can send it with reportbug, will try to send it via gnus with the next post then). I can reproduce this problem on two machines. -- System Information: Debian Release: buster/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 4.14.0-3-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=de_DE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /usr/bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) LSM: AppArmor: enabled Versions of packages gnome-shell depends on: ii caribou 0.4.21-4 ii dconf-gsettings-backend [gsettings-backend] 0.26.1-2 ii evolution-data-server3.26.3-4 ii gir1.2-accountsservice-1.0 0.6.45-1 ii gir1.2-atspi-2.0 2.26.2-2 ii gir1.2-caribou-1.0 0.4.21-4 ii gir1.2-freedesktop 1.54.1-4 ii gir1.2-gcr-3 3.20.0-6 ii gir1.2-gdesktopenums-3.0 3.24.1-2 ii gir1.2-gdm-1.0 3.26.2.1-3 ii gir1.2-geoclue-2.0 2.4.7-1 ii gir1.2-glib-2.0 1.54.1-4 ii gir1.2-gnomebluetooth-1.03.26.1-2 ii gir1.2-gnomedesktop-3.0 3.26.2-4 ii gir1.2-gtk-3.0 3.22.26-2 ii gir1.2-gweather-3.0 3.26.1-2 ii gir1.2-ibus-1.0 1.5.17-3 ii gir1.2-mutter-1 3.26.2-1 ii gir1.2-nm-1.01.10.2-3 ii gir1.2-nma-1.0 1.8.10-2 ii gir1.2-pango-1.0 1.40.14-1 ii gir1.2-polkit-1.00.105-18 ii gir1.2-rsvg-2.0 2.40.20-2 ii gir1.2-soup-2.4 2.60.2-2 ii gir1.2-upowerglib-1.00.99.7-1 ii gjs 1.50.2-3 ii gnome-backgrounds3.26.2-2 ii gnome-settings-daemon3.26.2-1 ii gnome-shell-common 3.26.2-4 ii gsettings-desktop-schemas3.24.1-2 ii libasound2 1.1.3-5 ii libatk-bridge2.0-0 2.26.1-1 ii libatk1.0-0 2.26.1-2 ii libc62.26-4 ii libcairo21.15.8-3 ii libcanberra-gtk3-0 0.30-6 ii libcanberra0 0.30-6 ii libcroco30.6.12-2 ii libecal-1.2-19 3.26.3-4 ii libedataserver-1.2-223.26.3-4 ii libgcr-base-3-1 3.20.0-6 ii libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 2.36.11-1 ii libgirepository-1.0-11.54.1-4 ii libgjs0g [libgjs0-libmozjs-52-0] 1.50.3-1 ii libglib2.0-0 2.54.3-1 ii libglib2.0-bin 2.54.3-1 ii libgstreamer1.0-01.12.4-1 ii libgtk-3-0 3.22.26-2 ii libical3 3.0.1-5 ii libjson-glib-1.0-0 1.4.2-3 ii libmutter-1-03.26.2-1 ii libnm0 1.10.2-1 ii libpango-1.0-0 1.40.14-1 ii libpangocairo-1.0-0 1.40.14-1 ii libpolkit-agent-1-0 0.105-18 ii libpolkit-gobject-1-00.105-18 ii libpulse-mainloop-glib0 11.1-4 ii libpulse011.1-4 ii libsecret-1-00.18.5-5 ii libstartup-notification0 0.12-5 ii libsystemd0 236-3 ii libx11-6 2:1.6.4-3 ii libxfixes3 1:5.0.3-1 ii

Bug#666468: xorg-server: major text display problems in several apps

Looks like a splashy related problem Thomas, do you also have splashy installed, ie. do you have a file /etc/lsb-base-logging.sh ? I have :-( So, then I tried your trick with renaming lsb-base-loging.sh and then the update works with no problem. Looks like uninstalling splashy for now... (do you still need the sh -x output?)
