Let's keep in touch and I wish you also a good vacation Sorry again for the late response. I have made the package explicitly reference the 3.01 version of the PHP License. (It was referring to PHP License before, so that should have been enough to imply the latest version, but now the reference is explicit.) It seems some people still have a problem with this clause: 6. Redistributions of any form whatsoever must retain the following acknowledgment: This product includes PHP software, freely available from http://www.php.net/software/. At this point, I'm not interested in relicensing the package under anything but the PHP License because it means tracking down four years worth of contributors. If you guys have a problem with the 3.01 license, you'll have to conveince the PHP Group to release one that is more to your liking as opposed to bugging PEAR developers who might be in a position similar to mine (lots of contributors). Joerg Jaspert [EMAIL PROTECTED] reported a bug: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=331418 which stops my Intention to upgrade the package for Debian, since there is a License problem. Can you please explain if it is a real problem, or if your intention to maintain/use this license is compatible with the package? An updated PHP license[1] has just become available which should address Debian's concerns. I'll try to put together an updated package some time over the long weekend (it's a holiday here in the US). Sorry for taking so long to get back to you on this. These kinds of requests honestly aren't too high on my global priority list, and the fact that most PEAR developers have recently been hit by a wave of similar requests by Debian people has caused many of us to just ignore the issue. I don't run Debian (or Linux, for that matter), and the fact that it's the only distribution that has a problem with the current licensing hasn't done much for my motivation to change things. Bug#331418: php4-pear-log: ELICENSE - licensed under non-free The PHP License, version 2.02
Package: php4-pear-log Severity: serious Sorry, but the license doesnt really fit the package. You have a php addon thing, using PHP license 2.02, but unfortunately for you this license cant really be used with anything else than PHP itself. It always only talks about the product PHP, not about software. And php-whatever isnt really PHP from the PHP group. Point 5 in the older version 2) is also an advertisement clause. Bad thing which is usually discouraged. And, at the end there is the following text: --- This software consists of voluntary contributions made by many individuals on behalf of the PHP Group. The PHP Group can be contacted via Email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] For more information on the PHP Group and the PHP project, please see http://www.php.net. This product includes the Zend Engine, freely available at http://www.zend.com. --- I doubt that your package is made on behalf of the PHP group. Or that it includes the Zend Engine. As a good solution for this I suggest to talk to your upstream. Looking at the license they choosed they do want to make it available for everyone, so I suggest to use either the original BSD license or the LGPL. The other solution is to reassign this bug to ftp.debian.org requesting the removal of this package. -- bye Joerg towo Das Internet, jetzt auf 47 DVDs - oder auf 2 CDs in der jugenfreien Fassung? pgpxdeM20uqqF.pgp Description: PGP signature
