sane-utils 1.0.19-9 fails to configure, this time without the deluser
error message of -8:

$ sudo dpkg --install sane-utils_1.0.19-9_i386.deb

 Are you actually using xinetd?

I have xinetd installed (to have the docs available on the notebook),
but it is not actually running.

 It'd help if you could pinpoint the exact issue; looks like it could
 be update-inetd failing here.

What exactly do you want me to do?

Running the postinst set -x should be enough to know what's failing.
