Ah, I didn't know that. More work for texdoc.tlu - while I hate being
shown the Catalogue page if the package documenation has a generic name
like manual.pdf, I think it *is* useful when there's nothing
available.

The problem is that the gencat.py script in src is actually GPL, but the
 used tcutils.py only contains
   # (C) COPYRIGHT
   # Togaware 2004 All rights are reserved.
   #
   # Authors: Graham Williams
 which is not really optimal.
[...]
Should we ask Graham to fix that and give us a statement, or just remove
 the Catalogue???

Well, I'm always for ask first, drop later. But if there was some
upstream discussion which lead to its removal, I don't think we should
keep it (since it would mean we have to take care for new upstream
versions etc.).

Bug#487149: texlive-doc-en: Source missing for some documentation files

2008-06-24 Thread Manuel Pégourié-Gonnard
Frank Küster scripsit (24.06.2008 22:07)

Same here. And the catalogue page is sometimes a good way to find the actual
doc, using the (non-working) documentation link to find the right name.

Anyway, Karl wants to remove the catalogue, for the two following reasons
(unless I misunderstood him) : (a) it gets outdated very fast and makes a few
Mb, which slows down the updates (b) we have a lot of information from the
Catalogue in texlive.tlpdb.

When I asked him about that, he suggested that when no documentation is found,
texdoc prints a message with a link to the package's page on ctan (or the
search page in case no package is found on ctan). That's what texdoc does
now, but I don't know if Karl already arranged the redirection. Any comments
or ideas welcome.

Anyway, since we have the project to enable using texlive.tlpdb from texdoc,
this problem should not last very long. (There will be other problems, like
what do we do with packages from the catalogue with no corresponding TL
package, for example when they are parts of bundles...)

Manuel.

Bug#487149: texlive-doc-en: Source missing for some documentation files

2008-06-23 Thread Norbert Preining
Hi all,

On Do, 19 Jun 2008, Frank K?ster wrote:
 - TeX Catalogue, source at

 cvs -d :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/texcatalogue export -r HEAD
 texcatalogue

Bit of digging showed:
texlive-svn revision 3843 from 2007-02-01 00:27:31 +0100,
Karl updated the catalogue in the texlive repository

So that gives a tex catalogue revision of around 7900
r7901 | robin | 2007-02-01 13:43:16 +0100
r7900 | schoepf | 2007-02-01 10:01:50 +0100
Upload
r7899 | robin | 2007-02-01 01:03:34 +0100
r7898 | robin | 2007-01-31 23:38:14 +0100

The 7900 is tagged with Upload, so I would take that revision as the
source.

Ok, I have checked out the revision. There is only a small problem here
that leads me to believe removing the catalogue might be the better
option (it is anyway removed upstream from texlive AFAIR)

The problem is that the gencat.py script in src is actually GPL, but the
used tcutils.py only contains
# (C) COPYRIGHT
# Togaware 2004 All rights are reserved.
#
# Authors: Graham Williams
which is not really optimal.

There are more scripts like that, but they are not needed, and gencat.py
contains a GPL statement.

Should we ask Graham to fix that and give us a statement, or just remove
the Catalogue???

Best wishes

Norbert

PS: Adding the stuff to the .dfsg .orig.tar.gz would be quite easy by
dropping it into
trunk/orig.tar.gz-addons/texlive-doc/WHEREEVER
(since the file is not used at all, WHEREEVER can be everywhere).

Bug#487149: texlive-doc-en: Source missing for some documentation files

2008-06-22 Thread Manuel Pegourie-Gonnard
Hi,

I'm a bit surprised by two of the problems. Indeed, on my Lenny box, I can
see the following files:

Frank Küster a écrit :
 - tds.pdf, source at

/usr/share/doc/texlive-doc-en/english/tds/tds.tex.gz

 - The UK TUG faq, source at

/usr/share/doc/texlive-doc-en/english/FAQ-en/faqbody.tex.gz

Those files look like the sources, don't they? Did I miss something?

 - TeX Catalogue, source at
 cvs -d :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/texcatalogue export -r HEAD
 texcatalogue

This one is not up to date. I never used cvs so I don't know how to look at
the log, but as a random test you can see that lots of recent entries
(say, xetex{-def,fontconfig,-greek,-pstricks}) are missing.

Manuel.

Bug#487149: texlive-doc-en: Source missing for some documentation files

2008-06-19 Thread Frank Küster
Package: texlive-doc-en
Version: 2007-4
Severity: serious

This has already been reported in #345604, but not yet addressed for
TeXLive.

I promised not to create more accumulative bugs, but this is a bit
different: This bug is going to collect all issues from #345604 which

- are still open in TeXLive

- where the only problem is that the source is missing

- but the source is available elsewhere.

I suggest that it should be fixed

a) upstream by generating a tarball for these files, which is not going
to be included in the TeXLive iso, unless Upstream wants it, too

b) generating a new Debian source package from this tarball.

Since the new upstream version is just about to be released and is not
going to be included in lenny, we have to decide whether we want to fix
it by creating our own source tarball for lenny, or instead consider an
lenny-ignore tag.

Regards, Frank
