Bug#542140: fglrx-driver: fglrx driver doesn't work with linux-image-2.6.30 (AMD64)

2009-08-28 Thread Mauro Michelotti
I have had the same problem with a bigmem 2.6.30 kernel on Debian Squeeze
I solved installing the backport made by Bertrand
and with the downgrade of libdrm2 from 2.4.12-1 to 2.3.1-2

Bug#542140: fglrx-driver: fglrx driver doesn't work with linux-image-2.6.30 (AMD64)

2009-08-26 Thread Bertrand Marc
Hi,

I don't know if you still have no hardware acceleration, but it seems that
downgrading libdrm to 2.3.1 (in Lenny, see
http://packages.debian.org/lenny/libdrm2) could give you hardware
acceleration with Xserver 1.4 and Linux 2.6.30.

Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a try later this evening. I've got a
RAID array re-syncing right now and I don't want to interrupt it.

Further to my earlier report, Bertrand Marc tracked the problem down to

2009-08-23 Thread Bertrand Marc

Gary Dale a écrit :
I tried it with both the source and compiled modules with the same
results. They installed without problems. However, apart from the
higher refresh rate I'm getting with the fglrx driver, there's not a
lot of difference between this and the vesa driver. The vesa driver
still gives a faster display but with some flickering. This is the
same result I got with manually installing the ATI drivers from the
AMD web site.

Prior to upgrading to the 2.6.30 kernel, I was getting great results
from the fglrx driver. Windows would drag smoothly and become
semi-transparent. I could use the X video extensions for video output
from Kaffeine, vlc mplayer (but the GL video didn't work). And I
was getting a lot of desktop effects, such as virtual desktops sliding
from one to another.

Any ideas on why the current driver's performance is so pitiful?

So we are getting closer ! Did you build the module with
module-assistant ? And could you attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?

Thanks
Bertrand

Yes. I followed Patrick's recipe:

See attached log:
Here are the interesting lines of your Xorg.0.log. It means you don't
have hardware acceleration :

(II) fglrx(0): driver needs X.org 7.1.x.y with x.y = 0.0
(WW) fglrx(0): could not detect X server version (query_status=-1)
(EE) fglrx(0): atiddxDriScreenInit failed, GPS not been initialized.

Right, I didn't notice that. It's probably the issue, but still I can't
figure out where it comes from.

Also noticed that I've somehow lost ACPI support. I know I used to
have it and I don't recall removing it, so I reinstalled it. That
should at least allow my screen to power down again.

If you installed fglrx with apt-get, you didn't installed 'Recommands',
so you probably should install fglrx-atieventsd to get ACPI support.

No, it was likely just the lack of the ACPID that caused the problem.
The fglrx-atieventsd was one of the .debs that installed OK earlier.
Aptitude seems to think I've got the latest version.

It should be part of any recent Linux install. I don't know how it got

my screen not shutting off - something that has never been a problem
before (other than the ongoing problem with mplayer/avidemux/etc.

After doing a dist-upgrade a couple of days ago in which
linux-image-2.6.30 was installed, the fglrx driver stopped working. I
could no longer get into X. Removing and reinstalling the driver
under the kernel didn't help.

Because the open source ATI drivers don't work, I'm left with the
vesa driver as the only method for running X.

I've also tried the installation method at
http://www.debianadmin.com/how-to-install-ati-fglrx-driver-in-debian.html/comment-page-1#comment-3543

but it fails during the driver install while trying to overwrite
libglx.so - and no amount of trying has let me get around the error.
Even if libglx.so is removed, I still can't overwrite it!

??

We are _not_ supporting the debs resulted by the ati installer!

On Debian just do (but be sure to remove everything from your old
installation):

# apt-get install fglrx-driver fglrx-glx fglrx-source module-assisstant
# m-a a-i fglrx

And that was it.

You misunderstood. It was the Debian packages I was having the problem
with. If you re-read my e-mail, I only tried the ATI installer because
the Debian packages didn't work.

The process you list fails, It gives the following log:

After doing a dist-upgrade a couple of days ago in which

could no longer get into X. Removing and reinstalling the driver
 under the kernel didn't help.

Because the open source ATI drivers don't work, I'm left with the
vesa driver as the only method for running X.

I've also tried the installation method at
 http://www.debianadmin.com/how-to-install-ati-fglrx-driver-in-debian.html/comment-page-1#comment-3543

but it fails during the driver install while trying to overwrite
libglx.so - and no amount of trying has let me get around the error.
Even if libglx.so is removed, I still can't overwrite it!

Hi,

I just made a backport for Xorg 7.3. Could you test it ?

I'd try but I need amd64 packages. Any chance of you posting them?

No sorry, I only have 32bits. But you can easily build amd64 backports
with the following :

#install the build dependancies
sudo aptitude build-dep fglrx-driver

#download the source of the backport
wget http://beberking.free.fr/fglrx/fglrx-driver_9-8-1+bpo1.diff.gz
wget http://beberking.free.fr/fglrx/fglrx-driver_9-8-1+bpo1.dsc
wget
http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/non-free/f/fglrx-driver/fglrx-driver_9-8.orig.tar.gz

#Extract and build the package
dpkg-source -x fglrx-driver_9-8-1+bpo1.dsc
cd fglrx-driver-9-8/
dpkg-buildpackage -b

That should do the trick!

Bug#542140: fglrx-driver: fglrx driver doesn't work with linux-image-2.6.30 (AMD64)

2009-08-17 Thread Gary Dale

Package: fglrx-driver
Version: 1:9-2-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

After doing a dist-upgrade a couple of days ago in which
linux-image-2.6.30 was installed, the fglrx driver stopped working. I
could no longer get into X. Removing and reinstalling the driver under
the kernel didn't help.

Because the open source ATI drivers don't work, I'm left with the vesa
driver as the only method for running X.

I've also tried the installation method at
http://www.debianadmin.com/how-to-install-ati-fglrx-driver-in-debian.html/comment-page-1#comment-3543
but it fails during the driver install while trying to overwrite
libglx.so - and no amount of trying has let me get around the error.
Even if libglx.so is removed, I still can't overwrite it!

??

We are _not_ supporting the debs resulted by the ati installer!

On Debian just do (but be sure to remove everything from your old
installation):

# apt-get install fglrx-driver fglrx-glx fglrx-source module-assisstant
# m-a a-i fglrx

And that was it.
