2010-09-18 Thread Alberto Quattrini Li
Hi!

even to me happened this issue, but I solved it with the fix reported
by Andreas (i.e. aticonfig, etc.)
I have debian testing with fglrx-10.7 and iceweasel-3.5.12 (kernel
2.6.32-5-amd64).

Bug#595200: Parts of the firefox/iceweasel window are completely black

2010-09-17 Thread Tomasz Kaźmierczak
Just looking for another bug in Iceweasel I've found this one...
I can confirm that this is an issue with fglrx-10.6 and above,
as after downgrading fglrx to 10.5 the bug went away. Also,
I've read today that this bug should be fixed in fglrx-10.9

Bug#595200: Parts of the firefox/iceweasel window are completely black

2010-09-15 Thread Hartmut Wernisch

Hello!

I had the same problem too, but not only with iceweasel.
With iceweasel 3.5.8 the boxes where black, with version
3.5.12 I had grey boxes, then also galeon and revelation
were showing grey boxes.

After some investigations I found that it must have
something to do with the fglrx drivers.
X-org without using them does not have this problem!
(only commented the drive in xorg.conf for my ATI 5770)

I am using Debian unstable 64-bit (last update 09/15/2010):

The fglrx drivers are buggy. There is a workaround for this
issue in cairo.

If dpkg -l libcairo2 says you're using 1.8.10-4, upgrade now!

1.8.10-5 introduces this workround, 1.8.10-6 disables the
woraround by default since it adds a penalty for everybody
and fglrx is apparently the only buggy driver.

Read /usr/share/doc/libcairo2/changelog.Debian.gz for how to enable it!

cairo (1.8.10-6) unstable; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/02_iceweasel-buggy-repeat.patch:
+ Revert logic of the patch for the infamous iceweasel rendering
problems. The only broken X11 driver that is left seems to be
fglrx and always enabling the workaround code in cairo causes
severe performance degradations for everybody (Closes: #594245).
Thanks for Josselin Mouette for the patch.
Everybody using the fglrx driver should set the MOZ_CAIRO_BUGGY_REPEAT
environment variable, everybody else should get a correctly working
  and fast cairo again.

Now please go bug AMD to fix the drivers if you think this bug is annoying!

Ok, I was apparently to fast to judge. I'm sorry, maybe there are
multiple issues to work around and the cairo workaround only partially
fixes stuff. Still this issue doesn't seem to be affecting anyone
not using fglrx... I can't help myself questioning the values
of locating workarounds for buggy proprietary drivers and it that's

Thanks for your awesome work.

 Hi,

 I full-upgraded my system yesterday

Here I guess you mean you upgraded from stable to testing, or from a
very old testing (before end of april) to current testing.

 and everything is working fine
apart from firefox (iceweasel). When I open the later, part of the
windows are covered in black. If I can scroll down and back a page, a
part which was previously black may now become visible, but if I can't
scroll the page, there is very little which can be done (resizing the
 window sometime helps).

Here is a typical example of the problem :

 http://www2.ph.ed.ac.uk/~jtailleu/BlackScreenFirefox.png

(I don't know how to attach a file with reportbug...).

I though it may be an x-related problem but firefox is the only
application with which I'm having trouble (emacs is fine, openoffice
 is fine, gimp, mplayer, etc...).

Please try upgrading libcairo2 to version 1.8.10-5 from unstable.

It would be helpful if you could narrow down what packages you have

see what fixes it ? I'd suggest you first downgrade iceweasel and

anything, the problem is elsewhere. Most likely cairo and/or an X video

Unfortunately it was my first full-upgrade for ages, so that many packages

I'm happy to try but I never did that before :-) Do you know where I can

I tried to install upstream firefox. To do so, I picked the ubuntu deb

and, surprizingly, the installation was successful :-)

However I still have the same pb:

I'm not sure Ubuntu uses the bundled cairo library, it would be safer to

Bug#595200: Parts of the firefox/iceweasel window are completely black

2010-09-02 Thread Julien Tailleur

Hi,

First, installing firefox 3.5.11 from Mozilla website solves the problem:
no more black parts.

Now, I've dowgraded quite a few packages: I've looked for the upgrades of
xulrunner, iceweasel and anything with cairo in it:

***

Cairo:

jul...@rotule:~$ cat /var/log/dpkg.log.1 | grep cairo | grep upgrade | awk
'{print $3,$4,$5,$6}'

upgrade libmono-cairo2.0-cil 2.4.4~svn151842-1 2.4.4~svn151842-3
upgrade libcairo-perl 1.061-1 1.070-1
upgrade libcairomm-1.0-1 1.8.0-1 1.8.4-3

I've downgraded the last two (could not find the first one on debian
snapshot ?!)

 dpkg -l | grep cairo | awk '{print $1,$2,$3}'
ii libcairo-perl 1.061-1
ii libcairo2 1.8.10-5
ii libcairomm-1.0-1 1.8.0-1
ii libmono-cairo2.0-cil 2.4.4~svn151842-3
ii libpixman-1-0 0.16.4-1
ii python-cairo 1.8.8-1+b1

*

xulrunner:

 cat /var/log/dpkg.log.1 | grep xulrunner | grep upgrade | awk '{print
$3,$4,$5,$6}'

upgrade xulrunner-1.9.1 1.9.1.9-6 1.9.1.11-1

dpkg -l | grep xulrunner | awk '{print $1,$2,$3}'
ii xulrunner-1.9.1 1.9.1.9-6

*

iceweasel:

jul...@rotule:~$ cat /var/log/dpkg.log.1 | grep iceweasel | grep upgrade |
awk '{print $3,$4,$5,$6}'

upgrade iceweasel 3.5.9-2 3.5.11-1
upgrade iceweasel-l10n-fr 1:3.5.9+debian-1 1:3.5.11+debian-1
jul...@rotule:~$ dpkg -l | grep iceweasel | awk '{print $1,$2,$3}'
ii iceweasel 3.5.9-2
ii iceweasel-l10n-fr 1:3.5.11+debian-1

I also tried to reboot with my previous kernel 2.6.32-3 rather than
2.6.32-5, and with the previous version of fglrx without much success.

Any suggestion apart from reverting one by one all the upgrades I've made? :-)

best wishes,

Julien

Are you sure there's not a libcairo2 upgrade somewhere ? (like maybe

There is this one:

jul...@rotule:~$ cat /var/log/dpkg.log | grep libcairo2 | grep upgrade
2010-09-02 12:07:37 upgrade libcairo2 1.8.10-4 1.8.10-5

but that's the one you made me do this morning. Would the installation of
the unstable version of libcairo2 this morning have erased a previous
upgrade in /var/log/dpkg.log.1 ? Because around the date of my
full-upgrade (the one that caused the problem), I don't see anything:

jul...@rotule:~$ cat /var/log/dpkg.log.1 | grep libcairo2 | grep upgrade
- nothing

start with xserver-xorg-video*

Argh... But if firefox upstream works and not iceweasel, you still think a
third-party program is responsible ? I'm not too familiar of the
differences, apart from tradenames having being removed.

I'll try dowgrading my xserver (sounds scary though...).

cheers

Julien

Bug#595200: Parts of the firefox/iceweasel window are completely black

2010-09-01 Thread Julien Tailleur
Package: iceweasel
Version: 3.5.11-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hi,

I full-upgraded my system yesterday and everything is working fine
apart from firefox (iceweasel).
