No, I did not try that. I will try to do so, thanks for the pointer!

I did

lightdm/lightdm.conf: Try `Xorg` to not need `xserver-xorg` [1]

and logging out or restarting the system started LightDM up as expected.
So I think it is safe to implement that change.

Ok, thanks for the test. I confirmed with gdm3 maintainers that they use
Xorg command, not X, so I guess it makes sense to use the same thing.
Not sure if it deserves a freeze exception though, will ask separately.

Ok, X is run by lightdm itself, not the greeter, which has nothing to do
with this. Recommends: is enough to cover the most common setups and
still allow for more uncommon ones, so closing.

thank you for verifying this. I wonder though why LightDM cannot
use /usr/bin/Xorg while GDM is able to.

Thanks,

Paul

Package: lightdm
Version: 1.2.2-3
Severity: serious
Justification: Renders package unusable

Dear Debian folks,

installing `lightdm` it runs, but the greeter does not show up. :/ Only
a blinking cursor in the top left corner on VT 7.

Somehow the X server is just closed

and LightDM does not find a X server.

$ sudo service lightdm start

There was only that `lightdm.log` in there, from which I pasted the

Sure. I will configure LightDM again, since unfortunately I did not save
it, and will send it again. :/

Alright, reading the error message again, `/usr/bin/X` is not installed
as it is in `xserver-xorg` `lightdm` only recommends.

1. Is that due to that LightDM can also be used from remote?
2. Since GDM can start fine without `/usr/bin/X`, LightDM should also be
able to?

Please proceed as you want with this report. I am sorry for the noise.

At least users will find something on the WWW when searching for the
error message. ;-)

Thanks,

Paul
