Ok, thanks for the test. I confirmed with gdm3 maintainers that they use Xorg command, not X, so I guess it makes sense to use the same thing. Well, even though lightdm might not need a hard dependency on xserver-xorg, I think lightdm-gtk-greeter might need it, so I'm keeping it open for now. Ok, X is run by lightdm itself, not the greeter, which has nothing to do with this. Recommends: is enough to cover the most common setups and still allow for more uncommon ones, so closing. thank you for verifying this.
