Bug#727758: Bug #727758: cups segfaults in libdbus - Fixed in 1.6.4-2 ?
Hi all, sorry for my delay in answering this bug… I have cherry-picked a set of patches from Fedora into cups 1.6.4-2 including two dbus related ones: - Avoid stale lockfile in dbus notifier - Stop accessing avahi through D-Bus using two threads It would be nice if you could attempt reproducing this bug with 1.6.4-2 and report back to the bugreport. Thanks in advance, cheers, OdyX signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

reassign 727758 cups affects 727758 + libdbus-1-3 thanks On Sat, 26 Oct 2013 at 11:37:44 +0200, Michael Meskes wrote: Most of the times cups comes up I get this: Oct 25 20:27:57 aragorn kernel: [ 389.581166] cupsd[2937]: segfault at 8 ip 7faeb7c98cd0 sp 7fff18af7148 error 4 in libdbus-1.so.3.7.5[7faeb7c72000+45000] Having thought about this some more, I'm going to reassign this to cups. I'm quite prepared for it to be reassigned back if it turns out to be a dbus bug, but we can't know that - or how to fix it - without more information, and the cups maintainers are likely to know much more about how to get that information than I do. Please reply to this bug with the result of reportbug --template cups so the cups package's full dependencies, and any other useful info from reportbug scripts, are visible. If an executable is crashing in a way that might implicate a library, it's likely to be best to report it initially as a bug in the executable (ideally with a cc to the library's @packages.debian.org address), unless you have a minimal test-case demonstrating that it is in fact a bug in the library. That way, the bug report already contains the executable's full dependencies and other relevant information from its bug scripts, and it'll be triaged by someone who knows how to get debug information from that particular executable. The proposed HOWTO_BUGREPORT documents in http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=717596 might explain how you can provide enough information for this crash to be diagnosed and fixed. From a quick look at the cups bug list, your crash might be related to one of these, for instance: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=682206 (crash in libdbus possibly caused by cups passing a dangling string pointer to libdbus functions, which also has some notes about how to get a backtrace or core dump) http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=634937 (segfault in libavahi-common (which uses libdbus), closed because unreproducible) Regards, S -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-rc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#727758: cups segfaults in libdbus
Package: libdbus-1-3 Version: 1.6.16-1 Severity: grave Most of the times cups comes up I get this: Oct 25 20:27:57 aragorn kernel: [ 389.581166] cupsd[2937]: segfault at 8 ip 7faeb7c98cd0 sp 7fff18af7148 error 4 in libdbus-1.so.3.7.5[7faeb7c72000+45000] Sometimes actually this only happens when the printer is switched on or a job is send to cups. Today for the first time I got this instead: Oct 26 11:26:22 aragorn kernel: [ 53.133630] traps: cupsd[2992] general protection ip:7f4c61ba5c7e sp:7fff4b69f108 error:0 in libdbus-1.so.3.7.5[7f4c61b88000+45000] I'm not sure who's the culprit, libdbus or cups, so feel free to reassign. However, the effect is that my cups server simply disappears. Interestingly enough more often than not it works after a restart. Any idea? Sorry, I don't know anything specific about cupsd or how to debug it, apart from nothing related to printing ever works first time, including cupsd :-) Cc'ing cups maintainers in case they have useful advice on getting a backtrace or core dump from it. There are basically two possibilities for a segfault inside libdbus: either libdbus has a bug, or another module used by cupsd (either the daemon itself or some other library or plugin) is using libdbus incorrectly (e.g. getting the refcounting of an object wrong, or using it in threads without thread initialization). Without a backtrace, we can't say which. Why is this RC severity? If cupsd links libdbus, then almost by definition it isn't breaks unrelated software...
