All is not well with 3.16.5 either: when I create a new account for my gmail mail, it is created and (after a long time) works as intended. However after quitting evo , that mail account is GONE. This has happened twice now. Reopening!

FYI: I did create a new account for the gmail address and checked if it was OK: It was :) Then I could happily remove the old account and rename the new to the old name. All is fine for now.

All is fine for now. If upstream could fix existing accounts that had already suffered from this bug, they would probably have done so in the version that fixed the bug; the fact that they didn't do this suggests that it may be impossible. My understanding is that 3.16.3 had a data-loss bug for GMail accounts, which led to internal data needed by the stored account being incomplete, hence the affected account was unusable even after upgrading. We don't have a time machine, so we can't retroactively fix 3.16.3. S

Bug#795287: evolution-data-server: Cannot connect to gmail account any longer
Package: evolution-data-server Version: 3.16.3-1.1 Severity: serious Tags: sid stretch Hi, With the latest debian packages, 3.16.3-1.1 evo cannot any longer connect to Contacts and the gmail account: Failed to connect to 'Contacts' Cannot find a corresponding account in the org.gnome.OnlineAccounts service from which to obtain a password for 'a...@gmail.com' Failed to connect account 'a...@gmail.com' The reported error was Source 'a...@gmail.com' doesn't support prompt for credentials. This problem has been found in archlinux already: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/45394 and reported to work OK with 3.16.4, so please package that version or the latest version 3.16.5 in sid. Communicating on the evolution ML gave the following answer (quoting Milan Crha): The only hit by googling is https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/45394 Aah, it references even the fix (kind of), and reports 3.16.4 has it fixed. They are right, the fix doesn't correct already broken account, it only avoids breakage of newly created accounts, thus the recreate of the account is needed. It also makes more sense to me now. I suppose you didn't use GOA at all, you entered your GMail account directly in the Evolution and ticked at the end of the New Account Wizard to create also the Contacts and possibly Calendars. Just go to Edit-Preferences-Mail Accounts and delete the GMail account there. Then create it again, but do not let it create the Contacts. The Contacts require OAuth2 authentication, which evolution currently supports only through GOA. I do not think the roundtrip of adding the new account will be of any help if you'll still use the 3.16.3 though, as that will break the newly created account again. and in a later mail: The actual bug was about adding GOA information into accounts which had nothing to do with GOA, then resulting into the issue with the password you face.
