Hi,

it would be nice if postinst would automatically setup the widescreen
variants for displays with an aspcet ratio of 16:9 or 16:10.

I found the xresprobe package, which seems to work fine here. Maybe our
X gurus have a better way to determine the display resolution.

Cheers,
Michael

I hope this is the right package…

The wallpapers are actually pretty nice, but the color transition of
the backgrounds sadly isn’t, because I can see steps of color,
instead of a smooth gradient. Could you therefore please raise the
color depth?

Package: desktop-base
Version: 12.0.5
Severity: important

The latest plymouth theme for Debian 12 doesn't show any
messages/prompts/fields.

The consequences of this is that when you boot up, you don't see the prompt to
decrypt your disk, so it appears that the boot process has frozen (until you
press escape and see the console luks prompt).

On live systems, when you reboot/shutdown, the user is prompted to remove the
live media and press enter, but since this message is now not visibile, it
appears that the system has frozen (until the user pressess enter).

Marking as important, since this is quite a big regression.

Package: desktop-base
Version: 12.0.2
Severity: wishlist

Updating some systems to Bookworm to try things out, I noticed the new
desktop theme is blurry on many systems compared to Bullseye, becaues the
Bullseye default "Homeworld" theme came with images (esp. SVGs) targeting
several resolutions above 1080p-ish, while Emerald tops out at
1920x1080/1200.

It feels especially sad to have _vector_ images do blurry pixel-oriented
upscaling -- GNOME at least seems to render the SVG at its target resolution
and then do a raster scaling to the screen resolution. That's not this
package's fault, but it can certainly provide copies of the SVGs that target
the higher res with very minimal editing.

For example, this tiny edit is enough to make the 1920x1080 render crisply
at 3840x2160, when combined with corresponding changes to the metadata
file(s):

Package: desktop-base
Version: 10.0.3
Severity: important

When KDE plasma desktop is installed on Debian testing (currently
plasma 5.17.5)
the wallpaper you get is not the one set by desktop-base but KDE's
default. So,

it seems like the integration provided by the script
/usr/share/plasma/shells/org.kde.plasma.desktop/contents/updates/desktop-base.js
is not properly working and would need an update for the newer
plasma-desktop

versions.

$ cat
/usr/share/plasma/shells/org.kde.plasma.desktop/contents/updates/desktop-base.js

...
// This script is provided by desktop-base
// It is run by Plasma 5 on upgrade.
// Plasma checks that the script is only run once for each version.
d = desktops()

for (i in d) {
   // Only set up the wallpaper if the plugin is the default.
   // Otherwise it means the user chose another plugin and we don’t
want to override that.

   if (d[i].wallpaperPlugin == 'org.kde.image') {
   d[i].currentConfigGroup = Array('Wallpaper', 'org.kde.image',
'General')

   if (!d[i].readConfig('Image')) {
   // Only set up the wallpaper if the wallpaper image is
empty (=default).
   // Otherwise it means the user selected a picture and we
don’t want to override that.

   d[i].writeConfig('Image', 'DebianTheme');
   }
   }
}

Apparently the condition inside `if (!d[i].readConfig('Image')) {` is
always false.

Removing that if solves the issue.

Dear maintainers,

via /etc/alternatives,
/usr/share/images/desktop-base/login-background.svg links to
/usr/share/desktop-base/active-theme/login/background.svg and
/usr/share/images/desktop-base/desktop-grub.png links to
/usr/share/desktop-base/active-theme/grub/grub-4x3.png by default.

Now if I would switch desktop-theme to joy-inksplat-theme, both links
are no longer valid because of these two missing links:

/usr/share/desktop-base/joy-inksplat-theme/grub -> ../joy-theme/grub
/usr/share/desktop-base/joy-inksplat-theme/login -> ../joy-theme/login

Could you please add these links (similar to
/usr/share/desktop-base/joy-inksplat-theme/lockscreen) so that
joy-inksplat-theme could be used like all the other themes without
separately setting /etc/alternatives/desktop-login-background and
/etc/alternatives/desktop-grub as well.

Thank you in advance!

Best regards,

Thomas Uhle

Dear Maintainer,

While the GRUB2 menu is being displayed, there's a "Debian 12" logo
on the splashscreen in the lower lefthand corner. GRUB2 however
displays text there (including the countdown timer message) and
it is very hard to read because of the logo. This may depend
on the user's screen resolution. I'm using 1440p and the
the positioning conflict is maximally bad there.

The logo would be much better positioned if it were on the
lower LEFT-hand side.

Cheers,
Jason

PS I used yesterday's daily Bookworm net installer so the
issue is as current as it could be.

PPS I noticed below in the auto generated message from
reportbug that desktop-base is suggesting xfce 4.16.
That should also be changed because we recently updated
testing to 4.18.

Hi,

during a test with piuparts I noticed your package left unowned files on
the system after purge, which is a violation of policy 6.8:

https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-maintainerscripts.html#details-of-removal-and-or-configuration-purging

The leftover files are actually alternatives that were installed by the
package but have not been properly removed.

While there is ongoing discussion how to remove alternatives correctly
(see https://bugs.debian.org/71621 for details) the following strategy
should work for regular cases:
* 'postinst configure' always installs the alternative
* 'prerm remove' removes the alternative
* 'postrm remove' and 'postrm disappear' remove the alternative
In all other cases a maintainer script is invoked (e.g. upgrade,
deconfigure) the alternatives are not modified to preserve user
configuration.
Removing the alternative in 'prerm remove' avoids having a dangling link
once the actual file gets removed, but 'prerm remove' is not called in
all cases (e.g. unpacked but not configured packages or disappearing
packages) so the postrm must remove the alternative again
(update-alternatives gracefully handles removal of non-existing
alternatives).

Note that the arguments for adding and removing alternatives differ, for
removal it's 'update-alternatives --remove  '.

Filing this as important as having a piuparts clean archive is a release
goal since lenny.

Dear Maintainer,

the new default homeworld theme wallpaper bears a white debian 11 logo in the
lower left corner which makes the last grub text line (also in white color)
partly unreadable in that area (1280x1014 screen here).

I suggest to remove the logo or change the color to a dark gray tone.

Closes: 983884 985267
Changes:
 desktop-base (11.0.3) unstable; urgency=medium
 .
   * Make Debian logo and text darker on GRUB backgrounds to avoid grub’s own
 text being unreadable on top of these. (Closes: #983884)
   * Also remove futurePrototype alternative for desktop-theme in prerm
 maintainer script. (Closes: #985267)
   * Fix Name metadata for homeworld theme’s wallpaper.
   * Also fix plymouth text display in multi-screen configurations for previous
 themes: futureprototype, joy, lines, moonlight, softwaves (fixes more
 cases of #956426).

Package: plymouth
Version: 0.9.4-2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Default plymouth theme with name "futureprototype" is used.
I am using 2 different monitors with size 1280 x 1024 and 1280 x 800.
Message like "resuming from hibernation" is written in the middle of the
text

"Debian" with the same color (white)
and therefore the message is unreadable. Same problem with
progress-percentage

during a software-upgrade.

Problem is at
/usr/share/plymouth/themes/futureprototype/futureprototype.script

at routine TextYOffset.
This routine checks if the message, including some reserved lines, fits
at the

screen.
If not, then the message is shifted upwards until it fits.
Coding:
    if (y + text_height > min_height)
    y = min_height - text_height;

This is wrong, because y is the vertical offset of the message at the
largest

screen
 and min_height is the height of the smallest screen.
This causes a shift of the text, although it fits at the smallest screen.
Also the shift is not correct, because it computes the vertical offset y
from the top of the smallest screen in stead of the largest screen.
Corrected code:
    if (y - Window.GetY() + text_height > min_height)
    # shift to top of smallest window
    y = Window.GetY() + 1;

The message is shifted now to the first line that is visble on both screens,
to avoid overlapping the "Debian"-text.

With the corrected test the message is not shifted anymore at the used
monitors.

This wrong code is also present at some other older plymouth scripts and
also

at ubuntu,
but does not harm there.

Hi there!

While working on BabelBox [1], I discovered that desktop-base Depends:
on librsvg2-common:

--8<---cut here---start->8---
 desktop-base (4.0.0.1) experimental; urgency=high
[...]
   [ Loic Minier ]
   * Depend on librsvg2-common for SVG support.

However, so far I have failed to understand what "SVG support" means,
given that it does not seems to be needed at all and actually it brings
a lot of (useless) dependencies:

Package: lxde
Version: 2
Severity: normal

Dear Debian folks,

I am sorry for reporting this issue probably to the wrong package. It
would be awesome if you could fix that up.

Trying LXDE from Debian Wheezy/testing on a 4:3 monitor the background
image seems distorted, meaning the Debian logo is squeezed horizontally.

It works under GNOME, so I guess there is some background image
available for a 4:3 monitor.

Thanks,

Paul

Package: plymouth
Version: 0.8.3-18+b1
Severity: important

Hello:

  I've found that desktop-base package install a plymouth theme that requires
  script module. See /usr/share/plymouth/themes/spacefun/spacefun.plymouth

  $ grep Module /usr/share/plymouth/themes/spacefun/spacefun.plymouth
  ModuleName=script

  This results in a failing initramfs rebuild when desktop-base and plymouth
  packages are installed, but plymouth-themes-script is not.

  The actual error comes from /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/plymouth
  line 43, where I can read:

  MODULE="${PLUGIN_PATH}/$(sed -n 's/^ModuleName=\(.*\)/\1/p' ${THEME}).so"

  # copy plugin and images for current theme
  copy_exec "${MODULE}"

  MODULE is evaluated as script.so but the file doesn't exist in PLUGIN_PATH
  because plymouth-themes-script is not installed.

  If I install plymouth-themes-script this problem doesn't happen.

  Regards, HTH

Package: sddm-theme-debian-maui
Version: 0.18.0-1
Severity: minor

Dear Maintainer,

After a recent system update My SDDM screen lost its image and became all gray.
I checked:
/usr/share/sddm/themes/debian-maui/theme.conf

It listed the background file:
background=/usr/share/desktop-base/active-theme/login/background-nologo.svg

I followed this file path and found that the file no longer existed. The only
files in the login folder are:
background-withlogo.svg
background.svg

I changed the line in the theme.conf to match:
background=/usr/share/desktop-base/active-theme/login/background.svg

and sddm started displaying an image again.

I believe the package that was recently moved from unstable into testing
updated these file: desktop-base 10.0.0

Package: plymouth
Version: 0.9.4-1.1

When using the new futureprototype plymouth theme, there is no feedback
to the user of any offline updates being applied.

With other plymouth themes (eg spinner) when offline systemd updates
occur text appears in the top left corner with "Installing updates...
NN%" etc. This is useful to the user as they are then informed that the
system is doing something and has not blocked.

Please use the Debian alternatives system to offer a new
'emblem-vendor' alternative (provided by emblem-debian in
desktop-base).

I am not familiar with setting up alternatives, but based on a quick
look at the manpage, I think you'll need to have "slave" alternatives
for the symlinks you'll need for all the different icon sizes.

I also suggest adding a 'emblem-vendor-symbolic' alternative (for
emblem-debian-white). That would more closely match the way GNOME
names its icons because of the convenient way that icon names are
resolved in GTK+.

The use case for this feature is to make it easier for Debian
derivatives to change the system branding in one place. This
particular idea was suggested by Raphaël Hertzog at
https://salsa.debian.org/gnome-team/gnome-control-center/merge_requests/1

Thanks,
Jeremy Bicha

Dear Maintainer,

I sinsirely apoligise if I'm reporting the wrong module, but although the
problem seem related to the kernel, I've chacked some older kernel wich worked
corectly before, those were not modified by recent upgrades and still do not
restore system after suspend-ro-ram is executted.

   * What led up to the situation?

system update, which I've done on May 28th. Previous update I've done on May
8th didn't have this unfortunate outcome.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)?

I've tried to use kerenl vmlinuz-4.9.0-5-amd64, which on my system dates back
to January 4th, and its initrd to January 15th. This does not help. My system
after May 28th does not resume from suspend to RAM.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

none.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

should the problem related to kernel, an old kernel should correctly suspend-
restore the system (as it did so at the time it was current).

Package: desktop-base
Version: 9.0.0
Severity: serious
Justification: Package fails to install because of this

Hi!

People who want to have the GRUB binaries installed (for example to
create VM images with GRUB), but don't want to use GRUB as their
bootloader will (in the case of classic PCs) have the grub-pc-bin [0]
and grub2-common [1] packages installed, but not the grub-pc [2]
package as this contains the scripts for the automatic installation.

This works fine, but unfortunately, desktop-base's postinst contains
the following code:

   202 # Apply GRUB background update into /boot
   203  if which update-grub > /dev/null ; then
   204 # Ensure the background image file has actually been written to
disc
   205  # before updating.
   206  sync
   207  update-grub
   208  fi

Since update-grub is shipped by the grub2-common package (see [3]),
this test is wrong. The fact that update-grub is available does not
imply that the system uses GRUB to boot. Since update-grub will
obviously fail to run if GRUB is not installed to /boot, this bug
causes desktop-base's postinst to fail, making the package
uninstallable on such systems.

Best regards

Alexander Kurtz

Dear Maintainer,

Updating desktop-base complains that this file
/usr/share/desktop-base/active-theme/wallpaper/contents/images/1920x1080.svg
does not exist.
I did not find it with apt-file so I just edited
/var/lib/dpkg/info/gconf2.postinst line 41 and changed svg into png.

I tried to run `nautilus-desktop` in LXDE after killing pcmanfm, then tried to
change the desktop background:

hedges@hazelnut:~$ nautilus-desktop
/usr/share/gnome-background-properties/debian-joy-inksplat.xml:14: parser error
: expected '>'

   ^
/usr/share/gnome-background-properties/debian-joy-inksplat.xml:15: parser error

   ^
/usr/share/gnome-background-properties/debian-joy.xml:15: parser error :

Removing the extraneous "" opening tag in the files fixed the
warning, although it still didn't let me change the background.

Package: desktop-base
Version: 9.0.2
Severity: normal
User: de...@kali.org
Usertags: origin-kali

I'm updating the Kali package based on 9.0.2 and I am thus reviewing the
changes. I found some problems:

* In debian/postrm:
- there are many "$priority" variables used that should be dropped as the
  update-alternatives --remove call does not need a priority
- there's a "read theme priority" that should be changed into "read theme"
- you are removing the "desktop-grub.sh" alternative but it's a slave
  alternative... aren't those automatically removed?
  And in fact, you are removing them twice... in two consecutive loops.

* In debian/preinst:
  You have code like this:
  if $2 <= 9.0.0~exp1; then
...
if $2 >= 9.0.0~exp1; then
  echo "ge 9.0.0~exp1"
  ...
fi
  fi
  if $2 < 9.0.0~; then
...
  fi

  First there's debugging code (the "echo" line) and what's the point of
  the embedded check >= 9.0.0~exp1 ? The only way to trigger it is when $2 =
9.0.0~exp1
  since it must meet >= 9.0.0~exp1 and <= 9.0.0~exp1 at the same time.

  The ordering does not seem very logic. You usally deal with upgrade
  problems of older versions first. So it seems to me that you should
  do something like this:
  if $2 < 9.0.0~; then
...
  fi
  if $2 = 9.0.0~exp1; then
...
  fi

  And AFAIK you don't need any other case since 9.0.0~exp1 followed
  immediately 8.0.2.

Cheers,

Package: desktop-base
Version: 8.0.2

The emblem-debian icon appears to be a duplicate of debian-swirl
provided by gnome-icon-theme (but I didn't examine the icons too
closely). That's fine because gnome-icon-theme is no longer maintained
upstream and was renamed to adwaita-icon-theme. The current
adwaita-icon-theme packaging in Debian does not provide the
debian-swirl logo.

gdm3 uses the Debian logo on the login screen. [1] If a computer
doesn't have gnome-icon-theme installed (the default in current
stretch I think), no logo is shown on the login screen.

I'd like to use emblem-debian instead but emblem-debian isn't provided
in a 48 pixel version in desktop-base. (I don't know if a 48-pixel
logo is necessary but I thought it would be easiest for now to just
keep doing what we've been doing.)

debian-swirl is provided in 16x16, 22x22, 24x24, 32x32, 48x48, 256x256
and scalable versions. [2]

emblem-debian is provided in 36x36, 64x64, 128x128 and scalable versions.

I don't know how important the different sizes are, but I'd at least
like 48x48 and probably 256x256 too.

Thanks,
Jeremy Bicha

Hi,

desktop-base don't install on live images, reason is that grub don't find a
canonical path.
I would call it a regression as desktop-base 8.0.2 works without problems.

The attached patch probably isn't a solution, more of a workaround.

Cheers Alf

Dear Maintainer,

'/usr/share/desktop-base/grub_background.sh' file is an easy way to set GRUB
backround picture and menu text / highlight colors, but it gets rewritten on
'desktop-base' package update;

on the other hand, GRUB background can be set in '/etc/default/grub', but not
the menu colors, forcing users to get deep into the GRUB configs:
http://wiki.debian.org/Grub2

Therefore, I suggest to treat '/usr/share/desktop-base/grub_background.sh' as a
config file (using UCF or whatever).

Hi,

looks like the plymouth theme is missing.
The only ones availabe are lines, joy and spacefun.

Regards,
Michael

Btw., I wonder if we should keep old themes from previous releases in
desktop-base for all eternity.
Maybe it would make sense to move them to into separate packages with
-$debian-release prefix.
