HW detection is a matter of taste, LVM is a comparable new feature in d-i and it would not be that complicated to add it to bfs. Same for wireless support. I found BF's monolithic structure difficult to grok, and time-consuming to manipulate; I believe in the end it was not worth the time for me to follow through on the project, instead muddling along with the stock installer and manipulating the kernel on each server post-install. In contrast, d-i's structure made it very easy to start hacking on, to the point that at the end of last year I had put together an XFS-capable install CD using a separate kernel in the space of a few weeks, and then (as someone who had never been part of a porter team) went on to write about 90% of the alpha-specific code for sarge d-i. I couldn't imagine myself doing the same for BF; and if I did, I'm afraid I have to say I think I would have enjoyed it much less. However good the code might have been in BF, the positive knowledge transfer and shallow learning curve that come from using a package-based design like d-i do have an effect on its accessibility to outside contributions; and when the primary blocker for BF was that people weren't helping, well... Well, the outcome of d-i development is good, but not that impressive (no GUI, no jumping penguins, confusing partitioner tool). Sometimes they have made the same errors we did with BFs, sometimes new things have been invented. I have read on a Debian web-site (or posting?) about using UTF-8 on every new (or updated) template, but sorry, I have no URL or official statement for you. Generally it's a good idea to do i18n with UTF-8. Do not make confusion between templates and the PO files which generate them. There is no requirement at all for PO files to be UTF-8. It's up to each translation team to decide the encoding they think is most suited for their needs. There is *no* requirement for all PO files in a given package to use the same encoding. Indeed, using UTF-8 everywhere may make the life of translation team more complicate as this nearly forces all team member to use a UTF-8 environment. More generally speaking, the package maintainers should *not* mess up with PO files encoding unless they deeply know what they're doing.

I'm really disappointed by seeing most contributors just not realize why this package, as proposed, is likely to hurt the feelings of several women (probably not all, I don't know) as well as, indirectly or not, some men. I believe this is really a problem, but it is a solvable problem. The package is sexist the way it is, as it does not consider the women involved with Debian in its default configuration. What I think should be done is pictures of a man should be added to the package *or*, as someone else suggested, add the picture of a flower blooming or something instead and point the 'themes' site in the readme. Now, the package is not sexist in that it will not allow that to happen, so anyone interested in giving women a choice should simply draw the pictures and provide a patch. I even think that it would be cool that women themselves would do that, because they'll probably have more taste than I do for that (even though I do admire the human body, be it masculine or feminine -- I've decided my own taste is quite distant from the average woman-taste for this). Packages can hurts feelings? It's your big conclusion about it? Don't matters for you the obvious detail about gender equality? requiring gender equality is obviosly pretty damn sexist. I can't see why. The whole free software concept brings an idea of giving equal oportunities to everyone. Fortunately, as I said, the code is available, and the equal oportunity for adding pictures that taste good for each one actually do exist. Legal budget and Director-and-officer insurance related to packages with adult themes
There are a few people who are most likely to be prosecuted over legal issues in Debian packages that have adult themes. They are the SPI directors, and those affiliated with any registration or incorporation of SPI or Debian in countries other than the U.S. There is the potential for us to suffer various sorts of legal peril. This is not trivial: for me prosecution could have a significant effect on how my son is brought up and what education we can afford for him. Board members and officers may choose to sustain that risk, but we should do it with our eyes open. Here's how you can help us do so. First, we should be asking more questions of our legal counsel so that we have a better idea of what the potential problems are and how to prepare for them. Some of these questions will be answered for free, some will cost money. I feel it's appropriate for Debian to allocate a legal budget specifically for issues related to packages with adult themes. Pending the outcome of questions to counsel, it may be advisable for SPI and Debian to purchase director and officer insurance coverage, to protect the people who stick their necks out on your behalf from the financial effects of a potential prosecution. This could easily cost thousands per year. Perhaps it would be appropriate to establish a donation fund specifically for packages with adult themes, so that those of us who have an interest in them can support their financial overhead without placing a burden on the rest of the Debian project. Until such a thing happens, I am assuming that the load of this shall be upon Debian's general fund. Thanks Bruce smime.p7s Description: S/MIME Cryptographic Signature

Regardless of the reason, if there were an insufficient number of people willing to work on b-f, the reality is that we *couldn't* have released that way. If you were unwilling or unable to do the work yourself, and no one was willing to give you the help you needed, then to say we could have released from your point of view misses the big picture. Oh, well. That is why I complained about irresponsibility in the last paragraph. I dislike this typical Debian mentality more and more. Beeing a volunteer seems to be a popular excuse nowadays. OTOH many new people jumped into the boat following the ideas of having a cool, fresh-fashioned installer. IMO (only IMO) most of them had bad memories about their first Debian install so they doomed BFs without any closer look at the source. Speaking for myself, I had looked at the boot floppies source not too long after woody's release, to try to include an updated kernel for my employer. I found BF's monolithic structure difficult to grok, and time-consuming to manipulate; I believe in the end it was not worth the time for me to follow through on the project, instead muddling along with the stock installer and manipulating the kernel on each server post-install. In contrast, d-i's structure made it very easy to start hacking on, to the A-Ha. Sorry, but you admit here that you did not give it a chance just because D-I seemed to give you more fun to hack on it. Sorry, my view on the Debian internals has been corrupted in the last months. IMO it has become an organisation of just-for-fun developers on the one side and power seeking maniacs on the other (not you, don't panic). Or maybe I just don't have any spare time and no motivation to deal with all that crap again and again. And yes, sorry for this kind of bitching. I expect some people to write ugly answers and more people calling me an ass on IRC (yes, I have read that). I just don't care. point that at the end of last year I had put together an XFS-capable install CD using a separate kernel in the space of a few weeks, and then (as someone I created the bf2.4-xfs flavor within few days, IIRC. But what is the point? I have not much to add to what I have written before. People that did not want to touch BFs for some psychological reasons jumped up and started to work on d-i. d-i has activated more manpower and I respect its developers. But I still don't think the manpower was used more efficiently. At the end of the calculation, d-i is an improvement but coming with a 2..3 years delay. Having 10% percent of the same manpower AND access to non-x86 architectures and experience on them would have been enough to create a security update or even update BFs for Sarge in 2003. And there is no reason to spew shit over BFs (as somebody in the thread did before). I can agree with you that d-i is not perfect, and yes, you've pointed out two of the sarge installer's most notable weaknesses (I don't know anything about jumping penguins, though :). OTOH, I've also seen comments like the sarge installer is the best Open Source installer ever and definitely easier to install than Windows XP, so clearly *some* users are impressed; and considering even the most fervent Debian advocates have always regarded the installer as a weakness, I think that's saying something... Sure, the outcome is impressive. Though, you know there are no absolute values. Re: Bug#283578: ITP: hot-babe -- erotic graphical system activity monitor
As already written in -women, this is the point which saddens me the most in this thread. I'm really disappointed by seeing most contributors just not realize why this package, as proposed, is likely to hurt the feelings of several women (probably not all, I don't know) as well as, indirectly or not, some men. (And quite stunningly failing to realise that objecting to this package in this manner is equally offensive in the other direction, and probably more so. I'm always entertained by the hypocrisy of these people). Packages can hurts feelings? It's your big conclusion about it? Don't matters for you the obvious detail about gender equality? requiring gender equality is obviosly pretty damn sexist. I can't see why. The whole free software concept brings an idea of giving equal oportunities to everyone. How is it equal opportunities to say: You can't do that unless you also find a woman who's willing to do it as well? Fortunately, as I said, the code is available, and the equal oportunity for adding pictures that taste good for each one actually do exist. That does not solve the problem, but makes it pretty easy to solve. The problem doesn't exist. There is no absence of opportunity here. There is only absence of action from some parties. Just because you elect not to engage in an action doesn't mean you can claim that nobody else should engage in that action. Not even under some misguided notion of equality. If somebody was saying We can have pictures of naked girls in the archive, but not naked men then you *might* have a valid point. (Closes: #205600) - debian/debhelper.in/libc.manpages: Remove glibcbug.1 from manpage. - debian/patches/glibcbug.dpatch: Add comment to be removed. . - debian/make-cvs-patch.sh: Change like make-cvs-locales-patch.sh. . - debian/patches/s390-pthread-fpic.dpatch: Add to fix lam build failure. It changes pthread_atfork in libpthread_nonshared.a is built with -fPIC, not -fpic, that is already applied in libc_nonshared.a. (Closes: #280445) . - debian/control.in/libc: Add gcc | c-compiler to Recommends of libc-dev. This change avoids that aptitude tries to install various compiler packages if only c-compiler is specified. (Closes: #283668) - debian/control.in/main: Add Build-Depends: gcc-3.3 (= 1:3.3.5-3) [ia64] | gcc-3.4 (= 3.4.3-2) [ia64] because ia64 should be built with gcc which supports libunwind. Requested by Matthias Klose [EMAIL PROTECTED]. - debian/control: Update. . - debian/patches/nptl-pthread-c++.dpatch: Add to disable using C99 designators for nptl pthread.h to fix C++ breakage.
